Facebook is beginning to roll out a new “upvote” and “downvote” comment voting system in New Zealand and Australia, according to the Guardian. The new voting system will display a vote count beside user comments — exactly as popular website Reddit does — which will indicate how many upvotes and downvotes a comment has received. A spokesman told the Guardian: “Facebook is a place for free expression, but we also recognise that there should be a way for people tell us and each other which comments are most thoughtful and useful. To that end, we’re running a test that introduces an upvote and downvote action for comments on large public page posts.”
When a user with access to the trial places their mouse cursor over a public comment on Facebook, a small box appears which reads “support better comments,” and provides a tutorial on how to give a comment an “upvote.” The box states “Press the comment up if you think the comment is helpful or insightful.” Another box titled “stop bad comments” explains how users should deal with comments they dislike. “Press the down button if a comment has bad intentions or is disrespectful. It’s still ok to disagree in a respectful way,” the instructions read.
A screenshot of the rating system can be seen below:
It would seem that this is an effort by Facebook to further expand the moderation of content on their platform by having users bring attention to content they don’t like. Facebook was criticised by the Myanmar civil society organizations last month for failure to police “hate speech” on their platform, Facebook commented on the issue saying: “We should have been faster and are working hard to improve our technology and tools to detect and prevent abusive, hateful or false content.”

There have been numerous questions about why Franklin Delano Roosevelt didn’t do more to help the endangered Jews of Europe escape the inferno of the Nazi Holocaust and help them flee to the United States, but now evidence has arisen with one salient answer: Roosevelt wanted the Jews to go anywhere but the United States.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Tuesday that the administration makes a habit of not being concerned about anything the top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee does or says.
Asked about special counsel Robert Mueller’s questions for President Donald Trump that leaked Tuesday, Sanders said she was not able to comment on the matter. Daily Mail reporter Francesca Chambers specifically asked about a charge that the White House was behind the leak, and Sanders referred her to Trump’s outside counsel for anything involving the investigation.
"I can’t comment on anything regarding those questions, and I would refer you to the president’s outside counsel," Sanders said.
Chambers specified she was asking about the possibility of White House involvement, but Sanders said the matter was specific to the president and again referred her to the president’s counsel. Chambers then asked whether the White House was concerned about Rep. Adam Schiff’s (D., Calif.) opinion that Mueller’s leaked questions indicate a focus on obstruction of justice.
"Is the White House concerned, as Congressman Adam Schiff has said, that so many of the questions point to obstruction of justice?" Chambers asked.
"We here at the White House try never to be concerned with anything dealing with Adam Schiff," Sanders replied, moving on to another reporter’s question.
Schiff has for months alleged there is "damning" evidence of Trump campaign collusion with Russia and obstruction of justice, despite the lack of proof. He claims Republicans are preventing the matter from being investigated fully.

A California judge sentenced a former school teacher on Monday to 30 days in county jail for using his cellphone to take inappropriate photos of a student and an adult co-worker for sexual purposes, KOVR-TV reported.
Police arrested Scott MacMillan, who taught K-6 science and engineering, following an investigation into the allegations made against him in 2016.
In October, the 44-year-old MacMillan pleaded no contest to charges that included attempted possession of child porn, attempted use of a concealed camera to take photos a child for sexual purposes and attempted use of a concealed camera to take photos of an adult victim for sexual purposes.
In addition to jail time, MacMillan will also serve three years’ probation and must register as a sex offender.
Students at Heron School in Sacramento captured video of the teacher using his cellphone to take pictures of a 12-year-old student under her desk, The Sacramento Bee reported.
A staff member at the kindergarten through eighth-grade school also reported that MacMillan tried to take a photo under her skirt.
School officials contacted Sacramento Police Department, which launched an investigation.
Investigators found multiple images of girls’ chest and genital areas on his cellphone that were taken without their knowledge.
Some parents said they were disappointed in the sentence.
“I think it’s horrible. I think it’s ridiculous and I think you should do a lot more time for that,” one parent with two students in the district told KOVR.
A law professor at McGeorge School of Law said MacMillan’s sentence might sound light but there’s more to it than meets the eye.
“Spending 30 days in jail is not inconsequential. It’s not 30 years, which if I was a parent I might think was appropriate, but the judge made a judgment call,” John Myers told the outlet. “His career is over, he’s registered as a sex offender for the rest of his life, he’ll never teach again and he has to go to jail for 30 days.”
The Natomas Unified School District said in a statement that it placed MacMillan on leave during the initial investigation. He resigned when termination proceedings began.
“The sentencing of Scott MacMillan supports the actions we took when allegations were raised. Safety of our students and staff is our top priority, so we initially placed Mr. MacMillan on leave while we and law enforcement investigated,” the statement said.
MacMillan, who taught school for 18 years, was a finalist for California’s Presidential Award of Excellence in 2016. The award is the nation’s highest honor for science teachers.

The liberals on The View geared up to defend Michelle Wolf’s comedy routine for a second day, and Meghan McCain returned to underline how badly conservatives distrust the media elites. Whoopi Goldberg claimed “journalists are an endangered species.” But Joy Behar really took the cake by insisting that no panelist on The View ever attacked Trump voters, just Trump. That’s a Pants-on-Fire lie.
Here’s how it went down: Behar claimed that distrust in the media somehow started with the Trump presidential campaign and his “fake news” attacks, and that Kellyanne Conway coined the term “alternative facts.”
MEGHAN McCAIN, feeling embattled: Trust me, I understand what you’re saying and I’m trying to, like, again, just have my perspective. I don’t mean to disrespect any of you but I also think that I know Trump supporters. I know how they look at the media. There’s a reason why — by the way, I was against it when it happened when they would scream “look at the crooked media” and they would be yelling and screaming at them at rallies. There’s a palpable distrust and anger toward the media, and I think the dinner made it worse.
JOY BEHAR: On this panel no one – far as I could tell – has ever said anything negative about Trump voters. Our animosity is towards Trump himself.
McCAIN: Sixty-six percent of Democrats feel that way, too, my producer just told me. [In the Monmouth poll she cites, 66 percent of independents, and 61 percent of Democrats agreed the media sometimes spread misinformation.]
BEHAR: We do go after Trump, I admit it. I’m one of his worst critics on television. But I do not attack the Trump voters. I don’t think you’ve ever heard me say that.
McCAIN: That’s not you.
BEHAR: You’re talking about the vibe here. And the vibe is not against Trump voters.
Behar apparently believes that a few months ago she was only mocking Vice President Mike Pence, and not traditional Christians in general, when she cracked “It’s one thing to talk to Jesus. It’s another thing when Jesus talks to you. That’s called mental illness, if I’m not correct. Hearing voices.”
We might spend several days making a long list underlining how preposterous these Behar statements are. Let’s just throw a few examples at the wall:
Co-host Joy Behar: “How is [removing birth control employer mandate from ObamaCare] it different from the Taliban I’d like to know?”…
Co-host Whoopi Goldberg: “I said this before. I’m going to say it again. With all these rollbacks and all the things we hear, what’s the difference between us and the people we’re fighting?”
Behar: “Nothing.”
Goldberg: “What’s the difference?”
Behar: “That’s what I’m saying. It’s to keep women down also. Let’s not forget they are trying to keep women in their place. Barefoot and pregnant.”
— ABC’s The View, June 1, 2017.
“What cost her the election is FBI Director Comey, what cost her the election, in my humble opinion is Russia’s hacking and what cost her the election is if you look at the stats, people – this was – I agree with Van Jones in a sense, this was a ‘white-lash.’ There’ve been studies. Twenty percent of people voted because of racism, and I think after eight years of a black president there was no way that this woman was going to win. There was no way….She was the most qualified candidate for president that we have ever had!”
— Co-host Sunny Hostin on ABC’s The View, May 3, 2017.
“Can I have a second? I just want to say, there is a certain segment of the society that’s resentful of any poor child getting anything for free. Those people need to look in the mirror. There are certain people in this country they know who they are, a lot of them voted for Trump and there’s a resentment involved here.” – Joy Behar on The View, May 15, 2017.
Behar doesn’t just spew on The View. Promoting her book The Great Gasbag on MSNBC’s Morning Joe on November 24, 2017, she said she can’t handle Trump voters at dinner parties. “Because if you are a Trump supporter, there’s something going on with you that I can’t abide….That means that you don’t care about the environment. It means that you don’t care about women’s issues. It means you don’t care about the fact that he provokes that nutcase in North Korea. I’m worried about the country.”
Promoting that book on October 27, 2017 on HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher, Behar mocked Van Jones. “He wants the Kumbaya. F— the Kumbaya! These people on that side are crazy! Don’t you understand they’re crazy? You don’t deal with white supremacists.” (She also said people should lay off the comedians, because “We are the philosophers right now.”)
PS: Joy has uncorked a variant of this “nobody mocks Trump supporters” argument before with Meghan McCain.
