Horowitz: If money from the feds is free, why not give everyone $100,000?

Most politicians in both parties adamantly disagree with President Trump on the need to achieve proper balance between quarantine and our livelihoods. They want an economic and liberty nuclear winter, and they want it indefinitely – without investigating any of the science and data behind it. At the same time, they want to spend trillions upon trillions of dollars “stimulating” a dead body with nothing to stimulate and don’t appear to see any downside to accruing all this debt and risking market distortions. So if that’s the case, why not just give every American a year’s worth of income?

Like all Kabuki theater in Washington, where Republicans agree with Democrats on 99 percent of an issue but fight truculently over the last 1 percent, both parties shook hands (I mean elbow-bumped!) on a $2 trillion stimulus today plus $4 trillion in Federal Reserve shenanigans.

The bill indiscriminately throws too much money in a black hole without better defining and studying the scope of the problem to come up with a better solution. It solves nothing, bankrupts our nation forever, and still brilliantly manages to leave many people behind at the same time!

“In effect, this is a wartime level of investment into our nation. The men and women of the greatest country on Earth are going to defeat this coronavirus and reclaim our future,” said Majority Leader Mitch McConnell when announcing the deal this morning. “The Senate’s going to make sure that they have the ammunition they need to do it.”

The problem is that this is not an investment at all. There is nothing to invest in or stimulate, with both parties pushing an indefinite lockdown. Yes, there were some good and necessary provisions enounced in the bill, such as unemployment benefits for those forced out of work by government (12% of the bill) and more funding for critical health care supplies (5% of the bill). But the rest of the bill is throwing money in a black hole when everyone knows they will pass numerous other bills that will need to double down on more payouts if they don’t address the root of the problem.

We should have a united agenda to get healthy people back to work with a mix of better-targeted geographic and demographic quarantines, supply Americans with masks and gloves to go outside like the Asian countries did, and get a more accurate projection of this virus than the flawed study that has been relied on. Without that, no amount of money in the world will help.

This bill sends a $1,200 check to every adult and an extra $500 for each additional child. The checks are phased out in a graduated scale for individuals earning over $75,000 and families earning more than $150,000 until they are completely eliminated at $99,000 for individuals and $198,000 for couples. It also funds loans and subsidies for corporations and large industries ($500 billion), such as the airline industry. Boeing got a $17 billion carve-out. There is no provision ensuring that those who get funding don’t take the money to China. The cost of the small business loans is $367 billion, along with $150 billion for state governments and $130 billion for hospitals.

Obviously, we all agree that with people forced by government to shut down, they need to be compensated; however, this bill achieves the worst of all worlds. The cost is crushing, but it fails to come anywhere near reimbursing businesses and many individuals for the losses. It indiscriminately mails out checks as high as $3,000-$4,000 for families under the $150,000 income level threshold who have not lost a penny and are still working. On the other hand, those earning over the threshold but who are still not wealthy, especially in high-cost areas, are left with no compensation, even if they are 100% out of work.

Furthermore, this bill calculates income pursuant to last year’s tax filing. That means if you were a small business that earned $200,000 last year but then were completely shut down this year, you are out of luck. Means-testing the rebates rather than situationally testing them as compensation only for those out of work makes no sense.

It’s true that lawmakers expanded and expedited unemployment benefits to cover those people, adding $600 of additional weekly benefits at a cost of $250 billion. But once they have that provision, which will bring weekly unemployment benefits up to $1,000 for most people and as much as $1,200-$1,400 in some states, why did they need the rebates too? Moreover, as Sens. Sasse and Scott are pointing out, it will further incentivize beleaguered employers to lay off more workers. Let’s wait to get the economy moving again, and the income will come back.

This legislation also doubles down on the first rescue bill’s mandated 12 weeks of paid leave and ensures that the cash is advanced to the businesses to cover the mandate.

“Well, government shut these people down, so they deserved to be paid,” some might suggest.

In that case, $1,200 won’t cut it for a once-successful small businesses. So why bankrupt the nation for a half-baked measure that literally cannot stimulate anything at this point, when they will have to spend another $2 trillion in two weeks?

And if our policymakers clearly see no downside to this because they seem to believe the feds can print an unlimited amount of money with limited consequences, then why not give every individual $50,000 and every family $100,000 to make them feel comfortable and quell the anxiety? I’m dead serious. What is the limit, and why is this so arbitrary? At what point do we become like Venezuela? If lawmakers believe there is no risk of that happening, why not fully compensate people for the long-term shutdown these same politicians are pushing?

Given that once the parties agree on something, they pass the bills with lightning speed anyway, why not just separate out the different components and hold individual votes? We need a rule of one issue at a time per bill.

In reality, this is not a WWII-style investment. Here’s what a WWII-style investment would look like:

  • Congress would immediately convene to debate and study the critical questions that they are taking for granted about the virus itself : When did it begin, how many have already had it, what is the best evidence to properly balance quarantine with work? And then make decisions that flow from that reality.
  • Congress should push a massive surge in deregulation that is commensurate with the spending surge so that entrepreneurs can know with certitude that they will operate under a pro-business climate in the long run. This will help us decrease our dependency on China, because businesses would be able to operate here without draconian and costly rules.
  • If we are going to bankrupt ourselves, why not actually invest the money in the form of slashing taxes across the board for several years so we can rebuild by incentivizing employment, not unemployment?
  • Abolish all foreign worker visas to make sure no American worker is left behind. We need a national plan to rebuild our economy with American labor on American soil and permanently socially distance ourselves from China.
  • Spawn a revolution in health care competition and freedom by removing all the barriers to starting new hospitals that are now controlled by the incumbent powers.
  • No member of Congress or high-ranking executive official should be paid until the economy meets a certain benchmark.

That is what a real investment looks like. What Republicans are achieving now is the worst of all policy outcomes and the worst of all political liabilities. Thus, if they are going to accept the premise of the Left that we need an indefinite shutdown and indefinite spending and focus on no other area of how we got to this point and how to get out of it, then why not just mail everyone a $100,000 check? It’s free anyway!

DOJ Memo Warns: People Intentionally Spreading Coronavirus Could Face Terror Charges

Individuals who purposely transmit the Chinese coronavirus to others could be charged as terrorists, warns a Department of Justice memo obtained Tuesday by Politico.

Deputy Attorney General Jeffrey Rosen wrote to U.S. Attorneys and law enforcement agency heads nationwide that they may find cases where there is “purposeful exposure and infection of others with COVID-19.”

“Because Coronavirus appears to meet the statutory definition of a ‘biological agent’… such acts potentially could implicate the Nation’s terrorism-related statutes,” wrote the DOJ’s second-highest ranking official.  “Threats or attempts to use COVID-19 as a weapon against Americans will not be tolerated.”

Rosen did not reference a particular case in which terror charges are being weighed.

The Justice Department recently launched a task force to combat hoarding and price gouging of consumers as the scramble to purchase essentials to sustain themselves during the coronavirus outbreak.

On Monday, Attorney General William Barr warned hoarders of medical equipment that the federal government has the authority to seize their products due to an executive order signed by President Donald Trump.

“If you have a big supply of toilet paper in your house, this is not something that you have to worry about, but if you are sitting on a warehouse with surgical masks, you will be hearing a knock on your door,” Barr told reporters during his remarks at the White House press briefing.

Pizzeria Recognized for Kindness After Offering Free Pizza and Delivery to People 70+

COVID-19 has changed the way we live our daily lives on a fundamental level. While it certainly affects people who now have to work from home, there are some jobs that simply can’t be performed at a residence, forcing business owners to make tough calls.

That’s especially true of restaurants. Many have had to choose between temporarily shuttering their locations or adapting to curbside pick-ups or delivery.

While that may be an issue for some food joints, fast food restaurants and pizza places were made for this. Drive-thru and delivery are their thing.

For one pizzeria, adjusting to the times is about more than keeping customers coming — it’s about taking care of their own.

Tony & Alba’s Pizza and Pasta in San Jose, California, is a local spot known for its casual atmosphere and sense of community.

TRENDING: Lifelong Democrat Voter Says ‘That Streak Will End in Nov.’ After Pelosi Stunt on COVID Relief Bill

“An Italian family restaurant that will meet your expectations,” their “About” section on Facebook reads. “We live by our motto, GREAT FOOD, GREAT FRIENDS, GREAT TIMES. When you come through our doors we treat you as one of family!”

In light of COVID-19, they’ve had to pivot and change up their services. They have started offering pick-up options and “activity kits” for kids, where parents can pick up pizza-making kits and they can make pizzas at home.

But it’s their senior program that’s gotten the most notice — and for good reason. They posted on Facebook with the program details.

“[W]e thought about all the elderly people living alone with no family nearby,” pizzeria owner Diana Vallorz told People.

“If you know of a person that is 70 and older and is quarantined, call us,” the pizzeria shared on March 14. “We will deliver a FREE PIZZA to them. They need to be in our delivery area. Just give us a call. You have been supporting us, we are giving back.”

“Driver will put it on a table or porch, knock and leave,” the caption added. “No interaction. We can also call to confirm.”

While the generous offer has been shared far and wide across the internet, it is important to note that the offer only extends to people within their delivery parameters.

Still, the local act of kindness has people buzzing — so much so that some have made donations to help fund the endeavor.

“I am happy to announce that the 70+ program received a donation of $1000 as a ‘Pay it Forward,’” the pizza place shared on March 15. “We are going to add a salad to the meal which is big enough to feed 2. If you know a person that could use a free meal contact us. Unfortunately we have a define delivery area but I might try to expand it.”

The response they got was overwhelming and prompted a follow-up post clearly defining their delivery boundaries.

“It is a medium pepperoni or cheese TAKE N BAKE,” the post clarified. “We can deliver it when we can which might be the next day. The pizza can be cooked by you when you want it. It can last in the fridge for 3 days.”

If you know someone in the area who could benefit from this, make sure to check out Tony & Alba’s Pizza and Pasta and spread the word!

WALSH: Governor Cuomo Says Dramatic Measures Are Worth It To Save ‘Just One Life.’ Then Why Did He Legalize Late-Term Abortion?

Governor Andrew Cuomo of New York has said, and repeatedly returned to the theme, that all of the lock downs and quarantines in his state will be worth it even if it saves “just one life.” Other Democratic governors and mayors have made similar statements. Last night Joe Biden tweeted, in an apparent response to Trump’s desire to re-open the economy sooner rather than later, that “no one is expendable” and “no life is worth losing to add one more point to the Dow.”

The first problem with these comments is that they are manifestly absurd. Obviously it would not be worth it to collapse the economy and consign millions to destitution just to save one life. And while it’s true that no one is expendable as an individual, it is not true that “no life is worth losing” in order to salvage the economy. Biden is trying to turn the economic concerns of those who want to end the shut downs into a quibble over points on the stock market index, but he knows better. What’s at stake here is not merely the stock market but the livelihoods of countless Americans. What he has really argued, then, is that it cannot be worth it for any individual life to be lost in order to preserve the livelihoods of many millions. That is simply ridiculous. As I wrote yesterday, we all believe that 35,000 dead on our roadways every year is a price worth paying so that we can drive around and get from Point A to Point B quicker. The idea that even one dead person is not worth it to preserve the entire economy is, therefore, nonsensical.

Now, it may be possible to take these statements from Cuomo, Biden, et al, in a more generous light. Perhaps they aren’t speaking literally and what they really mean is simply that life is enormously precious and great sacrifice is sometimes necessary to preserve it. Well, I’d suggest that now is not the time for vague hyperbole from our leaders, and if they mean “life is enormously precious and great sacrifice is sometimes necessary to preserve it” they should simply say so. More to the point, however, we already know that these people do not actually view human life this way. They do not think human life is, in and of itself, precious.

Governor Cuomo just last year signed a bill into law that legalizes abortion through every stage of pregnancy. Cuomo believes in, and has helped to facilitate, the murder of fully-developed and viable infants in the womb. This is Biden’s view, too, though only recently adopted. It is clear that they do not think life is precious, they do not believe that Heaven and Earth should be moved to save one life or even a million lives (the number killed by abortion every year), and they do in fact believe that some life is expendable. To these Democrats, human life prior to birth has less than no value. It has, indeed, negative value. According to their ideology, the destruction of innocent life can sometimes be a positive good and cause for celebration.

I don’t suggest that Cuomo, Biden, or any of the rest of them are insincere in their concern for the mostly elderly people being killed by the coronavirus. I’m sure they do find the death toll quite troubling, just as any rational person would. But they are plainly insincere in their concern for human life generally. So, we cannot take their “destroy the economy to save one life” arguments literally because the literal interpretation is insane. And we cannot take the arguments broadly and non-literally because the broad and non-literal interpretation conflicts with their platforms and policies. We are left, then, with no way to take them at all. Except as lies, plain and simple.

Seattle National Public Radio Station Refuses To Cover White House Briefings On Coronavirus

On Tuesday, a Seattle radio station tweeted that it would not air White House briefings dealing with the coronavirus because they exhibited a “pattern of false or misleading information.”

KUOW, which is a part of National Public Radio, tweeted, “KUOW is monitoring White House briefings for the latest news on the coronavirus — and we will continue to share all news relevant to Washington State with our listeners. However, we will not be airing the briefings live due to a pattern of false or misleading information provided that cannot be fact checked in real time.”

Judd Deere, a White House spokesperson, told The Hill,  “It’s not surprising, but also a failure of their duty to the American people, that some media outlets would choose to block their audiences from receiving accurate, up-to-date information on President Trump’s  whole-of-government approach to slowing the spread of COVID-19 … no other Administration has been as transparent and as accessible as this one, and we will continue to make sure this nation hears from its leaders and top health experts during this global pandemic.”

On Monday, KOUW tweeted its belief that it represented access to the truth, writing, “With the coronavirus outbreak in Washington, access to trusted, vetted information is crucially important. If your regular listening habits have been interrupted this week, try streaming KUOW online at KUOW.org or by telling your smart speaker to ‘Play KUOW.’”

Last week, another tweet boasted, “With the coronavirus outbreak in Washington, access to trusted, vetted information is crucially important. You can catch up on recent KUOW broadcast stories in the KUOW Newsroom podcast feed. Just search ‘KUOW Newsroom’ wherever you get your podcasts.”

The same day, KUOW seemingly bemoaned the spike in local gun sales at the beginning of March , tweeting, “If there was a point in time when people around #Seattle began to get really nervous about the local COVID-19 outbreak, it could have been the start of March. That’s when folks went for the guns.”

Last December, KUOW, which has stated of itself that its mission is “to create and serve an informed public, one challenged and invigorated by an understanding and appreciation of events, ideas, and cultures,” ran a headline trumpeting, “Get an extra! Seattleites beeline to newsstands for impeachment history.”

Deadline reported, “The news networks have been covering the briefings live, but CNN and MSNBC cut away from them on Monday, as the event stretched beyond an hour.”

Deputy White House Press Secretary Judd Deere tweeted, “Pretty disgraceful that @CNN and @MSNBC have both cut away from this @White House briefing with @realDonaldTrump and @Mike Pence during a global pandemic. Thank you to @FoxNews for keeping Americans informed.”

Deadline added, “… an MSNBC spokesperson said that ‘after airing the press conference for over an hour we cut away because the information no longer appeared to be valuable to the important ongoing discussion around public health.’ A spokeswoman for CNN said, ‘If the White House wants to ask for time on the network, they should make an official request. Otherwise we will make our own editorial decisions.’”

Stores Vandalized In Portland As Businesses Ordered To Close, Inmates Released, Police Ordered To Cite In Lieu Of Arrest

What happens when a governor orders businesses to close, jails release dozens of inmates, and police announce they will only respond to life threatening calls and issue citations instead of arresting people? Anyone with three functioning brain cells can see where this toxic combination is heading.

Sure enough, just one day into Oregon Governor Kate Brown’s order that all businesses deemed “non essential” are to close, vandals smashed out windows of seven businesses in Portland’s fancy pants Pearl District.

This has led to several businesses in the area to board up their windows.

KPTV reports:

“Yeah, I’m very worried about looting. I’m worried about a lot of things. Looting is definitely in the front of my mind right now,” said Ramzy Hattar, owner of River Pig Saloon. ” Especially cause it happened next door. And we’re two to three days into this closure, I can only image what’s going to happen in a month or two months into it.”

Just this past weekend, police did get reports of vandals throwing rocks and hitting seven different businesses near Northwest 10th and Lovejoy.

Michael Chown works in the Pearl District and was upset to see the glass windows covered by plywood.

“It’s scary honestly. Just driving down the street, no one is walking around, no one’s working, no one’s outside,” Chown said.

WATCH: Ryan Reynolds Releases Hilarious Video Mocking Celebrities’ Responses To Virus

Actor Ryan Reynolds is a funny guy — in the movies, and in real life.

He posted a hilarious video on Twitter this week in which he mocked celebrities for their grandiosity.

“We need to work to flatten the curve and fight off COVID-19. I think in times of crisis, I think we all know that it’s the celebrities we count on most,” Reynolds said. “They’re the ones that are going to get us through this.

“Right after healthcare workers, of course,” he said. “First responders. People who work in essential services. Ping pong players. Mannequins, they’re great. Childhood imaginary friends, sure. Like 400 other types of people.”

Then he offered some good advice.

“Look, stay at home, practice social-distancing, wash your hands. We are gonna get through this thing. We’re gonna get through this thing together,” he concluded.

Reynolds also challenged actor Seth Rogan to post his own video.

Others have used comedy to lighten the mood, as writer Joseph Curl of The Washington Times pointed out in a piece.

Take comedian Patton Oswalt. He can’t exactly tour the clubs anymore (since gatherings of more than 1.7 people are banned), so in a recent post on Twitter, he just stood on his house’s porch and delivered some old-school stand up — to two passersby on a sidewalk.

“All right, folks, thanks for staying in tonight. Uh, hope you guys are, uh, isolating and, uh, securing in place. Huh huh huh, this COVID-19, I tell ya’. You know, I don’t know the — I didn’t see COVIDS one through 18, so I don’t really know, uh, what this is all about. But you know, hey, great time to catch up on your, uh, streaming and, uh….”

“Oh, hey!” Oswalt says as the camera pans down to a young girl on the sidewalk. “How you doing there? How you doing today?”

She promptly says, “You suck,” and walks off. Hecklers, amirite?

Then was Neil Diamond performing his own coronavirus edition of his 1969 classic “Sweet Caroline.” At the chorus, instead of singing “hands, touching hands, reaching out, touching me, touching you,” he offers a new coronavirus version: “hands, washing hands, reaching out, don’t touch me, I won’t touch you.”

Churches Nationwide Find New Ways To Keep Congregations Connected During Coronavirus

Churches — just like so many other institutions and businesses — are grappling with how to best serve their communities during the age of social distancing.

Despite the challenges, multiple Christian leaders with whom The Western Journal spoke see the coronavirus outbreak as the faith community’s time to shine the light of Jesus.

William Vanderbloemen, CEO of a Houston-based consulting firm that serves some of the nation’s most renowned churches, said he has been fielding many calls from congregations around the country since the crisis broke.

COVID-19 has forced people, and thereby churches, to act in very unnatural ways, he explained.

Vanderbloemen pointed to the creation account in the Bible’s book of Genesis, where God created the land, sea, animals, plants, heavens and finally humans in His own image, saying after each it is “good.”

TRENDING: Lifelong Democrat Voter Says ‘That Streak Will End in Nov.’ After Pelosi Stunt on COVID Relief Bill

“The first thing God says is not good, He said it’s not good for people to be left alone,” Vanderbloemen said. “We are hardwired to be in in-person relationship with one another.”

The former pastor recalled how the church he led was filled to overflowing after the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

The same was true in 2003 following the shuttle Columbia disaster, which particularly hit home in Houston, the location of the Johnson Space Center.

“People want to be together and they want to hear a message of hope,” Vanderbloemen said. “I think there is this incredibly innate longing for people to be together right now, and we can’t.”

So they’ve done the next best thing, which is to connect online and through phone calls and texts.

John Leach — executive senior pastor of Life Center in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania — said his church, like many larger congregations, has broadcast services online for years.

To that, it has added daily online devotionals and prayer focuses during the time of enforced physical separation.

“We’re using this as a chance to expand, not pull back,” Leach said.

The church’s leadership has set four goals for the congregation, which is a few thousand strong: Stay in faith, stay compassionate, look for opportunities to serve and remain a community.

RELATED: NCAA Waives Rule After Crackdown on Trevor Lawrence’s Coronavirus Fundraising Ignites Outrage

To the objective of remaining a community, Leach said church leaders have reached out to over 1,000 members so far just to check in and see how they’re doing.

Brian Bowman, the lead pastor of Valley Life Church in Phoenix, said his church has done the same.

“We just took our staff and sort of had to reassign everyone to, basically, communications to stay in touch with our membership and the people who regularly attend,” he said.

The church is also seeking to network with not only with its congregants but also other churches across the Phoenix metro area and beyond to set aside the beginning of the 19th hour of the day as a time of prayer focus against the pandemic.

“The idea is that at the 19th hour of the day, which is 7 p.m., we’re just asking everyone to pray to end the COVID-19 virus,” Bowman said.

Among other projects, Valley Life is establishing a website to connect people with needs and those willing to help, such as elderly members looking for someone to go shopping for them or others who might need financial assistance.

Bowman contended the church’s job is to be a beacon of hope during these challenging times, particularly when media outlets such as CNN and others in society tend to highlight the bad news.

“The church is the only institution there that really can provide hope to be a part of the solution, as well as hope beyond this life,” he said. “We really think we are the only hope of this type that is out there.”

Fritz Hager, who serves as executive pastor of Bethel Bible Church in Tyler, Texas, agrees.

“I don’t know how people who don’t have faith stay sane in times like this,” he said. “There is a peace and a calm that people of faith should have.”

Hager is a veteran of the Persian Gulf war who later became a chaplain with the Texas State Guard, deploying during Hurricane Harvey in 2017.

When leaders in his church — including both staff and elders — call around to members of their congregation, “We just encourage people to place their hope in Jesus, who is unchanging and who is good and whose purposes and plans are better,” he said.

Hager related that he has been dialed into the coronavirus outbreak for the last month because he has a sister living in northern Italy, which has been hit hard by the pandemic.

Michael Maiden, the lead pastor of Church for the Nations in Phoenix, focused his Sunday message on providing, titling it, “Everything Is Going To Be Alright.”

“God’s promise to us is true: He’s a very present help in time of trouble,” the pastor told his online audience, quoting from Psalm 46.

“In the day of difficulty, the day of calamity, God says, ‘Trust me, I’m going to make this good,’” Maiden added, a reference to Romans 8:28.

He told The Western Journal, “This is a time for believers to grow closer to God, to feed themselves, to turn away from overflooding their senses, overflooding their minds with negative news reports.

“It’s OK to know the facts. It’s not OK to feed your fears to the point you’re submerged by discouragement.”

Maiden also encouraged Christians to actively look for ways to help others, especially those who suffer from anxiety and depression.

“We should be pretty aggressive in this season, not just hunkering down for ourselves, but to make sure we’re caring about people,” he said.

“When someone’s name or face pops up in our mind, often that’s the Holy Spirit telling us to pray for them or to reach out to them,” Maiden said. “It’s a great time for that.”

All the faith leaders expressed optimism that their churches and many others around the world will come out of the COVID-19 crisis stronger.

Maiden sees it as a time for believers to exercise their spiritual muscles.

“We’ll be stronger in the important stuff,” he said, which is loving God and loving people.

Leach views what happening in the world right now as the opportunity for a “reset.”

“We’re hoping there’s kind of a reset even when everybody goes back, maybe we go back with different values,” he said

The pastor argued it is not limited to the church community, but people in and outside the church are having a chance to rethink their priorities.

“We kind of live in a more reclusive neighborhood, and we’ve been finding that everyone’s been out, everyone’s been talking way more than they have been in the three, four years we’ve been here. It’s so nice,” Leach said.

Vanderbloemen’s company has put together a website of resources for churches to learn how to go online and other best practices during the coronavirus outbreak.

The consultant anticipates church attendance will spike when congregations are able to meet in person again.

“I think there is a pent-up hunger and whenever this thing passes and people are actually able to get out and get together, I think you’re going to see a storm surge of church attendance,” Vanderbloemen said.

He encouraged people to pray for their pastors and continue to financially support their churches, as they are able.

Bowman said if churches handle the crisis well, it could be among their finest hours.

“I could not be prouder of not just ours, but other churches all around, and not just in Phoenix, either, but I have friends all over the country and worldwide that are saying, ‘Yeah, we’re leaning in to this trouble rather than retreating or blaming or worrying,’” the pastor said.

“My church is mobilized like I’ve never seen before,” Bowman said.

‘Get Back to Normal’: Brazil’s Bolsonaro Urges End to Coronavirus ‘Hysteria’

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro once again blasted the global “hysteria” over the Chinese coronavirus in a public address Tuesday, urging his people to get back to normal life and work as soon as they possibly can.

In an address to the nation, Bolsonaro called on local authorities such as mayors and state governors to start rolling back lockdown measures that have shut down schools and brought many of the country’s big cities to complete standstill.

“Our lives have to go on. Jobs must be kept … we must, yes, get back to normal,” Bolsonaro said. “A small number of state and municipal authorities must abandon their scorched-earth ideas: the banning of public transport, the closing of commerce, and mass confinement.”

“What is happening around the world has shown that the at-risk group are those aged 60 or over. So why close schools?” he continued. “90 percent of us will show no symptoms if we are infected.”

Unable to take to the streets due to lockdown, opponents of Bolsonaro vented their fury at what they claimed was a cavalier attitude towards the virus by banging pots and pans from their balconies.

Citing his history as an athlete, the former army captain also insisted that he would “feel nothing” if he were infected with the coronavirus.

“In my particular case, with my history as an athlete, if I were infected with the virus, I would have no reason to worry, I would feel nothing, or it would be at most just a small flu,” he said.

In a video-conference held on Wednesday morning between the president and state officials, Bolsonaro clashed with São Paulo governor João Doria, who has enforced a 15-day quarantine period affecting about 46 million in the country’s most populous and important financial state.

In the exchange, Doria pledged to pursue “legal action” if necessary.

“We have 40 deaths in our state,” he said. “These aren’t fake deaths, Mr. President. This is not just a ‘little flu.’”

According to the latest figures, Brazil has so far recorded 2,201 cases of the coronavirus and 46 deaths, most of which are in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. Despite its population of around 200 million, the figures place Brazil relatively ahead of most Latin American countries.

Bolsonaro, who recently tested negative for the coronavirus following false reports that he had tested positive, is now proposing a “vertical” approach to isolation, that will require the elderly and those with prior health conditions to self-quarantine. Reports in Brazilian media suggest that his Health Minister Dr. Luiz Henrique Mandetta may resign in protest.

Bolsonaro insisted last week that his country was “winning” the fight against the coronavirus thanks to his leadership.

“The team is doing well and we are winning by a landslide [goleada, a term meaning many soccer goals],” he told an O Globo journalist when asked whether he regretted his initial response. “But it is also thanks to its coach. So, we are going to do justice and praise the coach named Jair Bolsonaro.”
