Poll: Coronavirus Concerns Drop Among Voters in Battleground States

Concerns surrounding the novel coronavirus are dropping among voters in battleground states, a CNBC/Change Research survey released Wednesday revealed.

The survey, taken among 3,544 likely voters in Arizona, Florida, Michigan, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin between May 1 and May 3, found that 68 percent remain seriously concerned about the coronavirus. While that remains a majority, it signals concerns are gradually lessening, falling from 76 percent April 18 and the high of 87 percent April 3.

The change appears to reflect a partisan shift, as 39 percent of Republicans indicated that they are “seriously” concerned now, “down from 55% two weeks ago,” according to Change Research. Meanwhile, 97 percent of Democrats remained seriously concerned, and 66 percent of independents indicated the same:

A large majority of Democrats (97%) and independents (66%) remain seriously concerned, but only 39% of Republicans are seriously concerned today (down from 55% two weeks ago). Voters remain more concerned about the impact on their health and safety (65%) than the impact on their family’s financial situation (35%). Over 1 million Americans had been diagnosed with COVID by the end of last week, and 47% of battleground voters reported personally knowing someone with the disease.

The survey also found that “overwhelming majorities” are continuing to take precautions in their everyday lives. Ninety percent are washing their hands, 82 percent are avoiding crowds, 67 are wearing masks in public, and 66 percent are still sheltering at home.

“Democrats, however, are far more likely than Republicans to say they are participating in these activities,” the survey showed.

“Republicans are less likely by 45 points to wear a face mask in public, less likely by 44 points to be sheltering at home, and less likely by 33 points to be avoiding crowds,” the survey found, coinciding with the overall drop in virus concerns among Republicans.

The margin of error is +/- 1.7 percent.

Democrat Jennifer Wexton Calls for Sexual Assault Investigation of Joe Biden

Rep. Jennifer Wexton (D-VA) said on Wednesday that the sexual assault allegation against former Vice President Joe Biden should be investigated, which raises questions over if other Democrats, such as Rep. Elaine Luria (D-VA), will also call for an investigation.

Wexton, who endorsed the former vice president in March, said “women deserve to be heard and taken seriously” about sexual assault accusations.

“The standard by which we address any allegations should never be dependent on who is involved or their political affiliation,” Wexton said in a statement provided to the Loudon Times-Mirror.

“These claims should be investigated and thoroughly reviewed, especially when a candidate for elected office is involved,” she added.

The freshman Democrat contended that “Biden has continued to respond appropriately.”

“I remain a strong supporter of Vice President Biden’s candidacy and believe he will offer the kind of leadership that this nation sorely needs,” Wexton said.

Wexton’s call for transparency about the Biden accusation raises questions over if other Virginia Democrats will also call for an investigation into the allegation.

Rep. Elaine (D-VA), who ousted former Rep. Scott Taylor (R-VA) during the 2018 midterm elections, called for an investigation into Christine Blasey Ford’s allegation against Judge Brett Kavanaugh.

Luria also endorsed Biden in February.

“Victims of sexual assault should be protected and supported, not vilified,” Luria wrote in September 2018. “Dr. Christine Blasey Ford deserves our support, and until we, as a country, stand by women, sexual assault will continue to be unacceptably prevalent in our society.”

Congressional Leadership Fund (CLF) spokesman Will Reinert said in a statement on Wednesday that Luria is ignoring Biden’s accusation to further the Democrats’ interests.

“Now that the shoe is on the other foot, apparently Congresswoman Luria no longer thinks we need to ‘believe survivors,’” said Reinert. “Party politics comes first for Luria, so she’ll happily ignore even credible claims of sexual assaults, as long as it helps her party in 2020.”

Rand Paul Calls to Reopen Economy — ‘The Only Thing that Recovers Our Economy Is Reopening the Economy’

Wednesday, Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) discussed the possibility of a fourth stimulus relief package amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Instead of another stimulus package, Paul told Ed Henry of Fox News Channel’s “America’s Newsroom” that the only way to recover the U.S. economy “is opening the economy” and allowing people to get back to work or else there will “continue to be economic calamity.

“To people [who] ask me I remind them that we have no money,” Paul emphasized. “We have no rainy day account. We have no savings account. The $3 trillion that we’ve already passed out is imaginary money. It’s being borrowed basically from China. So, the irony is we got the virus from China, and now we are going to be more dependent by borrowing more money from China. The only thing that recovers our economy is opening the economy.”

He continued, “It’s not a lack of money, it’s a lack of commerce. If you let people have commerce, if you let them trade, if you take them out from forcible home arrest, our economy will recover. But if you keep everybody under home arrest and say you cannot practice your business, you cannot sell your goods, there will continue to be economic calamity. … We don’t have any money.”

Donald Trump Honors Nurses at the White House

President Donald Trump honored a group of nurses at the White House on Wednesday, thanking them for their efforts to fight the coronavirus.

“America’s nurses are waging a war against the invisible enemy,” he said.”They’re fighting on the frontlines of the battle risking their health to save lives of fellow citizens.”

The president signed a proclamation in honor of National Nurses Day and met with six nurses and the presidents of the American Nurses Association and the American Association of Nurse Practitioners.

One reporter questioned whether the president was sending the wrong message to Americans for meeting a group of nurses who were not socially distancing in the Oval Office and were not wearing masks.

“I’m trying to be nice, I’m signing a bill and you criticize us,” Trump replied.

The president turned and looked straight into the camera and said, “Look, here’s a story. There’s not a single thing I can do to satisfy the media, the Democrats, and the fake news.”

Sophia Thomas, the president of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners, defended their actions in the Oval Office, noting that they had all been tested negative for the coronavirus.

“We’re all COVID-19 free, we were all tested, we’re not socially distancing if we’re all negative, and we wouldn’t do anything to harm our president, obviously,” she said.

The president asked the nurses whether they had enough personal protection equipment after reports of shortages in some areas.

Thomas said that she had reused her N95 mask for weeks in New Orleans and that PPE was “sporadic” for a while at her location but was “manageable.”

“Sporadic for you, but not sporadic for a lot of other people,” Trump replied.

“I agree Mr. President, absolutely,” Thomas replied.

Many of the other nurses said they had sufficient supplies. One nurse from New Jersey said she hated news reports of medical shortages because they alarmed medical staff.

“It makes it so much worse for us nurses to work,” she said. “We’re seeing the reality of it, but to hear it on constantly … in reality, I’m not seeing it. I’m in a hot zone right now.”

“You know why? Because they’re fake news, that’s why,” the president replied.

Trump also praised Luke Adams, a nurse who volunteered to work in New York City.

“He lives in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania — good place. When he heard the call of volunteers in New York Luke drove to the epicenter of the outbreak and slept in his car for nine days so he could help care for the sick,” he said.

Adams said that many nurses had to isolate themselves from loved ones as they cared for the people hospitalized by the coronavirus.

“A lot of us have been forced away from our partners, turned away from our children. We’ve slept on concrete floors or in cars. And we did these things not for our own benefit or safety.”

First Lady Melania Trump also thanked nurses in a video released on social media.

Police Are Complicit In Politicians’ Disregard For The Rule Of Law

Police Are Complicit In Politicians’ Disregard For The Rule Of Law

Authored by Ryan McMaken via The Mises Institute,

People of a certain age might remember the old John Birch Society slogan "Support your local police!" The idea here is that your local policeman is a liberty-loving buddy of yours who would only ever support just laws and constitutional mandates. Only those bad guys in the FBI or BATF would ever consider violating your rights.

Now, obviously that has always been a rather naïve fantasy, but the notion certainly has a long history of support among American conservatives. The idea that unionized, well-paid government employees sympathize with the common man instead of with the government that signs the cops’ checks apparently has long made sense (for some reason) to conservatives and many others.

But thanks to the ongoing "state of emergency" and the fact that state governors, mayors, and health officials now rule by decree, we’re witnessing more and more how local law enforcement officers have no particular interest in the rule of law, the Bill of Rights, or basic human rights of any sort. Police have been at the forefront of arresting business owners for the "crime" of using their own private property, using city parks, and engaging in other peaceful activities.

As Judge Napolitano has noted, these "stay-at-home orders" – and the penalties that accompany them – aren’t even real laws since they were never passed by a legislature or brought into being by any process other than on the authority of a single person who is usually a state governor or municipal official. By no definition of "rule of law" do these measures meet basic moral requirements for their imposition on peaceful citizens.

But the police are enthusiastically enforcing these edicts nonetheless, and using them as an excuse to harass the taxpayers.

Here are just a few examples from around the United States.

Keep in mind that no one is required to go near these places or interact with anyone involved. Those who wish to isolate themselves from these businesses and their clientele may freely do so. Yet these are just a handful of the many cases of police harassment involving citations, arrests, and other forms of coercion and intimidation brought against people who are just trying to live their lives. Nor should we assume that this is "as bad as it gets." Since there is no longer any due process or public legislative process subject to checks and balances, governors and mayors can unilaterally decide at any time to ramp up social distancing requirements and business closures. If the public appears uncooperative, public officials can simply order police to being making mass arrests. We have no reason to think the police would not comply with this order.

After all, police personnel, who do not have a particularly impressive record when it comes to stopping or investigating real crime, have plenty of resources to crack down on nonviolent "perpetrators."

The cases of New York and Odessa are instructive. Odessa law enforcement officers apparently have the extra time and resources to assemble a SWAT team in response to protests, but does this mean there is no real crime that needs investigating in Odessa? Of course not. According to the FBI’s 2018 crime survey, Odessa had 1,049 violent crimes in 2018, including 118 rapes and 819 aggravated assaults. If late 2019 and early 2020 were at all similar, then we’re talking about hundreds of violent crimes that Odessa-area police officials are ignoring in order to harass people for entering a tavern.

Indeed, if Odessa law enforcement agencies are anything like countless police agencies in other areas, only about half of violent crimes are "resolved" at all. That is,

only 45 percent of violent crime lead to arrest and prosecution. That is, less than half of violent crimes result in what is known as a "clearance" of the crime. Property crime clearances are much worse. Only 17 percent of burglaries, arsons, and car thefts are "cleared."

Among violent crimes, homicides experience the highest clearance rate by far, at 61 percent. Aggravated assault comes in at 53 percent, and rape at 34 percent.

But these are just cases where arrests are made and prosecutions are initiated. A smaller number of cases actually lead to convictions. A crime may be cleared even when the suspect is later exonerated.

New York is not exempt from these trends, yet the New York mayor recently dispatched one thousand cops to break up Jewish funerals and ensure that people don’t have barbecues on warm spring days.

By the way, there were more than forty-six thousand violent crimes in New York in 2018. But don’t fear, the police have extra personnel to come and break up your small backyard gathering.

There’s nothing surprising here, however. Police have long shown a lack of enthusiasm for addressing real crime, knowing that business owners, small-time drug users, and loiterers won’t fight back, and thus make for much better targets.

This is why police are often found to run and hide from truly violent criminals while the victims must fend for themselves, as in the case of the Parkland shooting or the case of the stabbing of Joseph Lozito.

Police are always careful to use the legal defense that they are not obligated to actually protect anyone from anything. The courts agree with this defense, and it is now well established legally that although you have an obligation to pay the police to "protect and serve," the police have no obligation to actually provide protection.

But police officers and their bosses have convinced themselves that the really important policing right now involves hauling dog groomers off to jail and collecting revenue from parkgoers who are only standing five feet from the next person.

But if you have a problem with real crime? You’re likely out of luck.

Socialism Has Always Worked

Socialism Has Always WorkedSince the fall of the Soviet system in Russia, countless individuals on America’s political Right have stated and restated the claim that “Socialism has never worked wherever it has been tried” and used that as an argument against that form of government. We hear that same claim being made today as a counter to those in the Democrat party, including a recent Presidential candidate, that are now openly advocating Socialism for America.

WATCH: MSNBC Commentator Anand Giridharadas Gets Triggered at ‘Freedom-Obsessed’ Americans

MSNBC commentator Anand Giridharadas attacked Americans’ obsession with freedom on Wednesday’s edition of Morning Joe, suggesting it blinded them to issues like the virus and “climate change.”After spending time bashing President Donald Trump’s senior adviser and son-in-law Jared Kushner, co-anchor Willie Geist pivoted to ask Giridharadas about the pandemic: “What do we learn from this?” Giridharadas began with raising a question of his own: “What’s going to be our relationship to government, the idea of government, after this?” Then…

Hundreds of Criminals Could Soon Be Free in California Thanks to Soros-Backed Org

The American Civil Liberties Union is taking legal action to attempt to free 500 inmates from jail in California.

The ACLU — which was awarded $50 million from leftist billionaire George Soros’ Open Society Institute in 2014 to “end mass incarceration” — filed a lawsuit Thursday in U.S. District Court against Orange County Sheriff Don Barnes demanding the release of hundreds of criminals.

The organization listed more than 500 inmates who it says must be freed because they are “medically vulnerable” to the coronavirus.

“The Orange County Sheriff’s Department has repeatedly failed its obligation to protect the safety of people in its custody,” Jacob Reisberg, an advocate with the ACLU focusing on jail conditions, told the Los Angeles Times. “Under normal circumstances, this lack of care is shameful, but during COVID-19 it is catastrophic.”

In response, Barnes said he has taken measures to protect inmates and jail staff but doesn’t want to put the public at risk by releasing more criminals.

“I will continue to take measures needed to ensure the capacity is available to maintain safe operations and preserve our ability to house criminal offenders,” the sheriff said in a statement to the Orange County Register. “In preserving the safety of our custody operations, I must also ensure the safety of the law-abiding public. I am not supportive of extensive preemptive releases that go beyond what is necessary to keep the jail and community safe.”

Other top officials across the state, including Gov. Gavin Newsom, have been evacuating prisons in defense that they are trying to prevent overcrowding. Last month, Newsom ended the sentences for 14 convicted killers, the Times reported.

One of the commuted sentences was given to a 50-year-old felon who was convicted of stabbing his pregnant wife to death. Clemency was also given to a woman convicted of fatally assaulting a baby in her care while she was a home daycare provider.

The jails in Orange County are far from overcrowded. In fact, the inmate population has been reduced by nearly 45 percent in the past two months during the coronavirus, Barnes told the county’s Board of Supervisors.

Just last month, Court Commissioner Joseph Dane signed off on the release of seven “high risk” sex offenders. These individuals’ crimes included child molestation, sexual battery of a child and indecent exposure to a child.

Orange County District Attorney Toff Spitzer released a statement on the release, saying, “These kinds of high-risk sex offenders are the most dangerous kind of criminal and the most likely to re-offend. They are doing everything they can to avoid detection by the parole officers assigned to monitor them so they can potentially commit additional sex offenses. These are not the kind of people who should be getting a break.”

When mothers are taken to jail because they let their kids play at the playground but pedophiles are released onto the streets, it is clear that this is not actually about safety.

When pastors are imprisoned because they open their pews but hardened criminals are freed from jail, there is a strong argument that it is no longer about being compassionate.

The establishment media’s and the majority of liberal governors’ narratives during the coronavirus crisis has been that a strict lockdown is necessary for controlling COVID-19. In that same token, wouldn’t prisons be considered an ideal example of this lockdown implementation?

Well, when it comes to everyday Americans, lockdown is precisely what is being pushed. Hefty fines and jail time are consequences of disobeying lockdown orders.

However, when illegal immigrants want to storm into our country by the millions, the ACLU and Soros not only look the other way but passionately fight for their “rights.”

Conservative author Michelle Malkin delved deep into Soros’ and the ACLU’s combined efforts to fuel the open borders movement in her book “Open Borders, Inc: Who’s Funding America’s Destruction?”

Malkin thoroughly outlined the ways in which this chaos-causing team uses its propagandist power and money to stunt for open borders.

Their work has been quite successful in crumbling the United States’ sovereignty and stymying the Trump administration’s efforts at reducing illegal or mass immigration.

So restricting law-abiding citizens’ freedom is essential for combating the coronavirus, but releasing dangerous criminals into the streets is part of the solution?

And Americans need to unequivocally respect liberal governors’ orders to stay home in the name of not spreading the virus around, all while unvetted migrants are welcome to flood through our country?

According to Soros and the ACLU, the answer is yes.

BREAKING: Texas Governor Abbott Calls For Immediate Release From Jail Of Salon Owner Who Opened Shop

On Wednesday, Texas Governor Greg Abbott joined Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton to call for the immediate release from jail of salon owner Shelley Luther, who had been sentenced to a week in jail on Tuesday for opening her salon against state guidelines. Abbott issued a statement that read:

I join the Attorney General in disagreeing with the excessive action by the Dallas Judge, putting Shelley Luther in jail for seven days. As I have made clear through prior pronouncements, jailing Texans for non-compliance with executive orders should always be the last available option. Compliance with executive orders during this pandemic is important to ensure public safety; however, surely there are less restrictive means to achieving that goal than jailing a Texas mother.

Paxton wrote:

I find it outrageous and out of touch that during this national pandemic, a judge, in a county that actually released hardened criminals for fear of contracting COVID-19, would jail a mother for operating her hair salon in an attempt to put food on her family’s table. The trial judge did not need to lock up Shelley Luther. His order is a shameful abuse of judicial discretion, which seems like another political stunt in Dallas. He should release Ms. Luther immediately.

On Tuesday, Luther, the owner of Salon À la Mode, was sentenced to a week in jail and a $7,000 fine for opening her salon in defiance of state orders. She delivered a poignant answer when the judge said he’d rescind the jail sentence if she admitted she was wrong.

After Dallas Judge Eric Moye told Luther that she had the option of acknowledging she was wrong and had been selfish, and should apologize to elected officials for violating their orders, Luther responded, “Judge, I would like to say that I have much respect for this court and laws and that I have never been in this position before and it’s not someplace that I want to be. But I have to disagree with you, sir, when you say that I’m selfish because feeding my kids — is not selfish. I have hair stylists that are going hungry because they’d rather feed their kids. So, sir, if you think the law is more important than kids getting fed, then please go ahead with your decision but I am not going to shut the salon.”

Court documents stated, “On April 8, 2020, this Court entered a Temporary Restraining Order. Defendants were served with said Order that same day. The Order specified that the Defendants were ordered to case operation of their business ‘Salon a La Mode.’ The Order further enjoined and restrained the Defendants from continuing the operation of their business the salon.”

Last Wednesday, Luther stated, “Apparently there’s a very good chance that I’m getting arrested today and I will do everything I can to keep the shop open because I’m not closing the store. If they arrest me I have someone that will keep the store open because it’s our right to keep the store open. It’s our right for those women to earn income for their families.”
