(Sarah Silbiger / Getty Images)

The other day, I heard some lefty on one of the lefty cable channels say the president has no authority to tell governors that they must allow churches to have services.

Ummmm … wrong.

Way back in 2000, Congress passed by unanimous consent a law called the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act of 2000.

And for those of you who think this is political, it was signed by Slick Willy Clinton.

The law “prohibits zoning and landmarking laws that substantially burden the religious exercise of churches or other religious assemblies or institutions absent the least restrictive means of furthering a compelling governmental interest.”

TRENDING: COVID Survivor Was Banned from Flying Trump Flag To Thank POTUS, New Tribute Is Much Better

The act says among other things that zoning and land use laws cannot be used to:

“(1) treat churches or other religious assemblies or institutions on less than equal terms with nonreligious assemblies or institutions;

(2) discriminate against any assemblies or institutions on the basis of religion or religious denomination;

(3) totally exclude religious assemblies from a jurisdiction; or

Do you think CNN’s reporting on President Trump has been ignorant?

0% (0 Votes)

0% (0 Votes)

(4) unreasonably limit religious assemblies, institutions, or structures within a jurisdiction.”

Now you might say that a gubernatorial edict isn’t the same thing. I’m willing to bet an oral hearing at the Supreme Court that you are wrong.

The president is in charge of the Department of Justice. Those points came from the DOJ’s official advice. My guess is that Attorney General William Barr wasn’t kidding when he said, “even in times of emergency, when reasonable and temporary restrictions are placed on rights, the First Amendment and federal statutory law prohibit discrimination against religious institutions and religious believers. Thus, government may not impose special restrictions on religious activity that do not also apply to similar nonreligious activity.”

“For example, if a government allows movie theaters, restaurants, concert halls, and other comparable places of assembly to remain open and unrestricted, it may not order houses of worship to close, limit their congregation size, or otherwise impede religious gatherings. Religious institutions must not be singled out for special burdens.”

That sounds amazingly similar to the Department of Justice guidance issued on RLUIPA.

In short, the president can override the governors on this issue since it is addressed not only in the First Amendment to the Constitution but also in the Federal Code.

And yet, CNN reported that “Trump threatened to ‘override’ governors if their states did not follow the new federal recommendations, but it was unclear what authority the President was referring to.”

As if both the First Amendment and a 20-year-old law passed by unanimous consent in Congress need “clarification.”

In CNN’s case, the word ignorance comes to mind. They were ignorant of the fact that their patron saint, Slick Willy, actually signed that act into law.

AT&T, which owns CNN, should hang its corporate head in shame.

If you are going to pretend to be a news outlet, you should try a little harder.

You know when this will change?

When the Trump base catches on to the AT&T-CNN connection and starts buying their cellphone service elsewhere.

When AT&T starts losing serious money that can be attributed to mad Trump supporters with pitchforks.

Money talks.

Report: Democrats Concerned Economy Will Recover

Top Democrats are starting to get concerned. Their hysterical assertions that Republican governors who gradually reopened their economies would have "blood on their hands" proved to be hysterical assertions. And now Democrats worry about the prospect of a strong economic recovery.

Politico reports that Barack Obama’s former economic adviser, Jason Furman, has been terrifying Democratic colleagues with predictions that the next few months could bring "the best economic data we’ve seen in the history of this country." The downside of millions of Americans rejoining the workforce, Democrats fear, is that President Donald Trump could take credit in the final weeks of his reelection campaign.

Furman has been making his case to Democratic policymakers who served in the Clinton and Obama administrations, as well as senior members of Joe Biden’s presidential campaign. Many are understandably panicking at the thought of the American economy starting to rebound.

"This is my big worry," a former Obama White House official told Politico, adding that positive economic data heading into November was a "high, high, high, high," concern among Democratic Party leaders. The official said a growing economy was the biggest challenge for the Biden campaign and said, "If they can’t figure this out they should all just go home."

Biden’s campaign is reportedly "very much aware" of the devastating impact a booming economy could have on Democratic politicians. Recent polling suggests that, even amidst the economic turmoil caused by the pandemic, Trump is still viewed as the better candidate when it comes to handling the economy.

Still, some Democrats are choosing to look on the bright side. "In absolute terms, the economy will look historically terrible come November," said Democratic strategist Kenneth Baer. Sen. Chris Coons (Del.) was also optimistic. "It seems pretty unlikely to me that we’re going to have a really robust recovery in the next few months," he said. "Of course, we all hope there will be."

Perhaps that’s true. It just doesn’t jibe with much of the political commentary and media coverage these days, which seems to root for bad news and get perplexed by good news. MSNBC’s Nicolle Wallace reflected the sentiment of many by celebrating the "silver lining" of the deadly pandemic: It makes Trump look bad.

Twitter Apologizes for Trump Mocking Morning Joe, Does Not Specify Punishment

Twitter issued a statement apologizing for tweets from President Donald Trump linking MSNBC host Joe Scarborough to the death of Lori Klausutis, a staffer who worked for Scarborough while he was a Republican congressman.

The apology comes after Scarborough’s wife and MSNBC co-host, Mike Brzezinski, went on a rant against the President last week, demanding that Twitter remove Trump’s tweets. It also followed a letter from Klausitis’ husband, who also demanded that Twitter remove the tweets.

Klausutis was found dead inside Scarborough’s Florida office in 2001, with a fatal head injury. The official autopsy stated that she had an undiagnosed heart condition, causing her to fall and fatally hit her head on an office desk.

Reached for comment by the Washington Examiner, an establishment conservative magazine, Twitter apologized for the President’s tweets this morning.

“We are deeply sorry about the pain these statements, and the attention they are drawing, are causing the family,” said a Twitter representative. “We’ve been working to expand existing product features and policies so we can more effectively address things like this going forward, and we hope to have those changes in place shortly.”

It is unclear how Twitter plans to “address” the President’s tweets. The platform’s current policy states that it will not interfere with statements made by world leaders, except in a limited number of cases such as when those leaders promote terrorism or post the private information of another user.

However, s pressure on Twitter to censor the President has mounted, the company appears to have stepped further and further away from this policy.

The platform has censored tweets from Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro showing him talking to Brazilian citizens on the streets about the need to balance the need for economic growth with the need to contain the Chinese coronavirus.

In April, Twitter also targeted the President’s tweets, removing a meme posted by Trump over a copyright complaint, even though copyright complaints are not included on Twitter’s list of reasons for censoring world leaders.

Paris Dennard: All Joe Biden Has Done for Blacks Is ‘Lock Us Up’

Former Vice President Joe Biden has done nothing as a politician to help the black community, said Paris Dennard, senior communications advisor for black media affairs with the Republican Party, offering his remarks on Tuesday’s edition of SiriusXM’s Breitbart News Daily with host Alex Marlow.

Biden’s declared on Friday that if a black American is unsure of supporting him over President Donald Trump in the 2020 election “then you ain’t black.”

Dennard warned against characterizing Biden’s statement as a “gaffe.” Biden’s comment, he maintained, reflected the politician’s condescension towards blacks. “It’s paternalistic, and it’s bigoted,” he said.

“We’ve got to stop calling these gaffes,” urged Dennard. “We need to stop calling these ‘insensitive statements.’ No, They’re bigoted. They’re racist, and it’s exposing Joe Biden’s long history. Stop giving him cover for being a bigot.

Dennard noted the refusal of numerous Democrats to condemn Biden’s framing of black identity as contingent on partisan political support for the Democrat Party.

“I have been waiting to hear Amb. Susan Rice, Sen. Kamala Harris, Speaker Nancy Pelosi, [and] Stacey Abrams stand up and say something about this, but they’re not because it’s not about the people [or] the black community,” Dennard stated. “It’s about the black vote. That’s all they’re concerned about. It’s all politics.”

LISTEN:

“The RNC and the Trump campaign are going to be very aggressively going after Joe Biden. The impact of his statement not only was offensive to black Republicans or conservatives — or just free-thinking black Americans like myself who are supporting President Trump — but it’s also offensive to any black person who decides to just be a free thinker. … He’s essentially saying, ‘If you are not on my team — Joe Biden’s team — you’re not black,’” said Dennard.

“You have Joe Biden trying to put people in a box and think, ‘You’ve got to think the way I want you to think. If you don’t think that way. I’m going to pull away your identity. I’m going to pull away your cultural connection. I’m going to say that you are not a part of the community.’ That is an offensive thing to say, because this is exactly what they did during slavery, they wanted slaves to not be able to read and to write and to remain dumb and illiterate so that we wouldn’t be able to be educated and learned and advance and grow and prosper,” Dennard added.

“It is a way to suppress the vote,” Dennard stated. “It is a way to discourage people from daring to be able to do like Kanye West did and do like Vernon Jones did down in Georgia. … When you talk about voter suppression, this is a tactic from the left that we’re seeing play out by their nominee.”

Dennard assessed Biden’s political record.

“Let’s start with the Clinton crime bill, which [Joe Biden] wrote,” Dennard recalled. “You want to have a conversation about anybody’s statements to or for the black community? Let’s talk about how he talked about Barack Obama. Let’s talk about how he talked about Indian-Americans. Let’s talk about how he talked about black kids rubbing their their hands on [his] leg because they had never seen curly hair, and ‘Corn Pop,’ and little roaches, and people getting locked up for crossing the street.”

“You’ve been a vice president, but you haven’t done anything to directly impact the black community in a positive way besides lock us up,” concluded Dennard.

The High Cost Of Locking-Down America: “We’ve Seen A Year’s Worth Of Suicide Attempts In The Last Four Weeks”

The High Cost Of Locking-Down America: "We’ve Seen A Year’s Worth Of Suicide Attempts In The Last Four Weeks"

Tyler Durden

Tue, 05/26/2020 – 15:50

Authored by Michael Snyder via The End of The American Dream blog,

Locking down much of the country may have helped to “flatten the curve” a bit, but it has also had some very serious consequences that public health officials did not anticipate.  Humans were created to be social creatures, and forcing us to isolate ourselves from one another for weeks on end has turned out to be quite problematic.  This has especially been true for those that live alone.  Today, the U.S. has a higher percentage of one person households than ever before, and keeping those individuals totally isolated in their own homes is not that different from putting prison inmates in solitary confinement for an extended period of time.  In both cases, it can be just a matter of time before people mentally break.

Even before this pandemic came along, the suicide rate in the United States was already soaring, and now the number of suicides is spiking like we have never seen before.  Just consider what Dr. Mike deBoisblanc of John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek, California says is happening in his area

“We’ve never seen numbers like this, in such a short period of time,” he said. “I mean we’ve seen a year’s worth of suicide attempts in the last four weeks.”

And suicide helplines all over America are seeing an enormous increase in the number of people calling in…

Many crisis centers are reporting 30% to 40% increases in the number of people seeking help. The helpline at Provident is experiencing a tenfold increase compared with this time last year, when no national disaster was occurring.

In addition to being isolated in their own homes, Americans have also been bombarded by endless coverage of this pandemic by the mainstream media, and this has definitely helped to fuel a lot of anxiety

In all, 66% are watching and consuming more news than ever before, which is particularly puzzling considering that 68% also admitted that COVID-19 coverage gives them considerable anxiety. It’s not just anxiety either; 65% said they feel overwhelmed by coronavirus news, 56% just get plain angry, 67% feel burnt out, 59% experience fearfulness, and 50% can’t help but feel hopeless after hearing the nightly news.

And of course Americans are not just watching more news than ever before.  According to Comcast, the average U.S. household has actually been watching 66 hours of TV a week during this pandemic…

New research from telecomms firm Comcast has revealed viewing time has soared as a result, with households watching an extra eight-plus hours of TV each week – equivalent to the time spent on a full days’ work shift.

This means the average household now watches 66 hours of TV a week, up from 57 hours a week in early March.

Watching endless hours of television is one of the worst possible things that you can do for your mental health.

If you put garbage into your mind, you are going to get garbage out.

And allowing the corporate media elite to endlessly feed hour after hour of “programming” directly into your mind is incredibly self-destructive.

In addition to binge-watching television, many Americans have also been dealing with this crisis by turning to drugs and alcohol

Findings by The Recovery Village, a Florida-based network of addiction treatment facilities, reflect an “expected” increase in substance use during the pandemic, with Americans reporting a 55% rise in alcohol consumption in the last month. When it came to illicit drugs, 36% of Americans reported increased use of marijuana and prescription opioids, among others.

Needless to say, this is more self-destructive behavior that is just going to fuel even more anxiety, depression and despair.

Yes, this pandemic has been bad.  There have been more than 1.7 million confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the United States so far, and about 100,000 Americans have died.

But this isn’t the worst thing that we are going to face.  In fact, it isn’t even close.

So if we can’t handle what is happening right now, how in the world are we going to be able to handle what is coming?

The good news is that this pandemic is causing a lot of people to wake up and reflect on what really matters.

Prior to COVID-19, a lot of Americans were living for their careers.  But this crisis has demonstrated how rapidly those jobs can disappear.  There is absolutely no loyalty in the corporate world today, and most corporations will not hesitate to lay off workers once they start bleeding money.  At this point, more than 38 million Americans have already lost their jobs, and more job losses are coming in the weeks and months ahead.

Other Americans were living for the pleasures of this life before this pandemic came along.  But now bars, clubs and movie theaters all over the country have been shut down, professional sports leagues have been paralyzed, and this virus has even transformed dating into a hazard that many people simply don’t want to deal with.

So many of the things that we once valued so highly have been taken away, and maybe that is precisely what we needed.  Wrestling legend Hulk Hogan created quite an uproar when he made this point very strongly on Instagram…

“Word up, can you handle the truth my brother only love HH,” wrote Hogan, who has 1.5 million followers on Instagram. “In three short months, just like He did with the plagues of Egypt, God has taken away everything we worship.

“God said, ‘you want to worship athletes, I will shut down the stadiums. You want to worship musicians, I will shut down Civic Centers. You want to worship actors, I will shut down theaters. You want to worship money, I will shut down the economy and collapse the stock market. You don’t want to go to church and worship Me, I will make it where you can’t go to church.

“‘If my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.”

I couldn’t have said it better myself.  I wrote an entire book urging people to start focusing on what really matters, because true hope will not be found in the temporal things that the world is constantly chasing.

And it has definitely been encouraging to hear that many young people have taken this crisis as an opportunity to start thinking about spiritual issues more

A majority of teens and young adults say they are praying more or thinking about spiritual issues more than they were prior to the coronavirus pandemic, according to a new survey.

The poll of 800 high school students and 800 post-secondary students found that 67 percent said they’re either praying more often or thinking about spiritual issues more compared to the time before the virus.

There is hope, but it won’t be found on a television screen, at the bottom of a bottle or at the end of a needle.

So please don’t give up.  Despite all of the craziness in our world today, the best chapters of your life can still be ahead of you.

But if you keep feeding your mind endless hours of media “programming” and you keep chasing the things that they tell you to chase, all that is ahead of you is more pain, more anxiety, more depression and more despair.

BREAKING: DNI Ric Grenell Declassifies Slew of Russia Probe Documents on Way Out the Door Including Michael Flynn Transcripts

DNI Richard Grenell declassified a slew of Russia probe documents on his way out the door on Tuesday.

Former Rep. John Ratcliffe will take over as DNI today after his swearing in ceremony on Tuesday morning.

FOX News reported:

The documents include transcripts of phone calls that then-incoming National Security Adviser Michael Flynn and then-Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak had in December 2016, during the presidential transition period. Grenell said publicly last week that he was in the process of declassifying those files, after House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff, D-Calif., asked that he do so.

Fox News has learned that the declassification review of those transcripts is now complete, and it will be left up to Ratcliffe on whether to release them publicly.

Fox News has learned that Grenell also completed the declassification review of other documents related to the origins of the Russia probe — including one that a senior intelligence official told Fox News was “very significant in understanding how intelligence was manipulated to support launching the Russia investigation.”

John Solomon says that the declassifications will continue under Ratcliffe.
