The Blue State Blockade

It took just three years for President Donald Trump to lead America from the perpetually stagnant New Normal of the Clinton/Bush/Obama Trifecta of Failure back to the Morning in America of the Reagan era.  This was nothing short of an economic miracle that began the day after America’s blue-collar billionaire won the biggest upset in our political history when the stock market took off like a rocket.

NBC’s Melvin Nastily Asks Tim Scott: Is GOP ‘Using You’ as a ‘Token’?

During a contentious interview with Republican South Carolina Senator Tim Scott on Thursday, NBC’s 3rd Hour Today show co-host Craig Melvin wondered if the only black GOP member of the U.S. Senate was being “used” by his party as a “token” to lead policing reform efforts in the wake of George Floyd’s death. Scott promptly rejected the insulting suggestion.
After allowing the Senator to briefly outline the Republican proposal for police reform, Melvin launched his nasty attack: “Senator, you have faced a fair amount of criticism, especially over the past few days, because you are the only black Republican senator, some have said that your party is using you, they’ve even thrown around the word ‘token,’ as well. Your response to that criticism?”

Scott pushed back hard at the dismissive insinuation:
Well, I am also the only person in my conference who has been racially profiled, driving while black. I’m the only one in my conference that’s been stopped seven times in one year as an elected official, perhaps the only one in my conference wearing this senate pin that was stopped from coming into the building. So if there’s someone in the conference who understands discrimination and profiling, it’s me. It’s the reason why I asked to lead this charge, because it is a personal issue, it is the right issue. And frankly, I think it helps to have someone who has been a victim of this situation and who still has a tremendous respect for where our country can go together. So I shrug those comments and criticisms off. But you’ve got to know, when you’re a black Republican, you’re like a unicorn. People are going to criticize you when you wake up, when you go to sleep. If you say you like apple pie and football, there’s a lot of critics for that, too. So God bless their souls.
It’s interesting that during a softball interview with Democratic New Jersey Senator Cory Booker on Wednesday, about him leading his party’s push for police reform, Melvin never asked if Booker’s white liberal colleagues in the Senate were using him as “token.”
After Scott’s response on Thursday, fellow co-host Al Roker jumped in and tried to push the Republican to denounce President Trump:
Well, Senator, let me ask you this, the President just announcing that he’s gonna host a rally next week, Tulsa, Oklahoma, where hundreds of African-Americans were killed during racial unrest in 1921, and on Juneteenth, the day that folks mark the end of slavery in this country. Also rejecting the idea of removing confederate statues – or names, I should say – from military bases. You’re from a state where a lot of the statues are common, a lot of statues coming down. Do you think the President is listening to the conversation, and how do you feel about confederate statues being removed?
Scott replied in part: “I’d like to spend as much energy about monuments – that is an important conversation – I’d love to spend an equal amount of energy talking about school choice and public and charter schools. I’d love to spend more time talking about issues that make a better future, as much as we are looking in the past.”
As the segment wrapped up, Melvin cast doubt on the ability of the Senate to get anything done, remarking: “Alright, we didn’t get a chance to talk about the anti-lynching component, but we’ll bring you back….you guys couldn’t get that passed last week. We can’t even get U.S. Senators to agree on what constitutes lynching.” Scott immediately corrected him:
Well, actually, that’s not accurate. We have already passed this legislation twice in the Senate….There is a debate on the floor, but that is an inconsistent and inaccurate statement. We passed it in the Senate, I hope that the House would just take up our bill and pass it. In the House bill, they actually have the exact legislation that we passed in the Senate. I think we’ll get it done if we can come to the same table….that bill has already been passed. So I think we should focus on getting this done, because it is so important to our country, after 200 failures on anti-lynching, we’re right at the goal line. I hope we get it across the line.
Melvin concluded: “Alright, I didn’t mean to get in the weeds there with you, Senator….For a second there, it was starting to feel like MSNBC, instead of NBC.”
The amount of liberal rhetoric from Melvin and Roker in the exchange certainly sounded like MSNBC. There doesn’t appear to be a line between the left-wing cable channel and the broadcast network anymore.
Here is a full transcript of the June 11 interview:
9:05 AM ET
CRAIG MELVIN: With the issue of police reform now a top priority in Washington, Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina is taking the lead for Republicans in the Senate. He joins us now from Washington. Senator Scott, good morning to you, sir
SEN. TIM SCOTT [R-SC]: Good morning, thanks for having me.
MELVIN: It’s called the Justice Act package, as I understand it. I know that you’ve been in talks with the White House, specifically Jared Kushner, the President’s son-in-law and senior adviser, the acting chief of staff Mark Meadows, as well. What is that package going to look like? When might we see it?
SCOTT: Well, we’ve been talking to Democrats and the White House because this is an issue whose time has come. Bottom line, within the package, we work on body cameras, more notification, grants on de-escalating the aggression that we see caught on videos, we look at the use of force. We have a commission to study some of the issues. We also talk about the duty to intervene. The three officers that were standing there as the one officer was on Mr. Floyd’s neck, we think that there should be a duty to intervene. So we’re trying to provide the resources necessary to retrain these local departments, as well as provide more incentives for policies to change. If we do that part, we will make a difference.
I’ve been working on this since Walter Scott was shot in the back five times, and the police report said something exactly the opposite. So if we’re going to make progress, let’s not lose this moment I’ve been waiting for this for a long time. I’m sad that it takes another death to get here. But if we’re doing our jobs and we’re doing it right, and it’s not the Republicans and Democrats, it’s Americans working together to solve a serious issue that has been running rampant throughout communities of color for far too long.
MELVIN: Walter Scott, of course, the man who was running away from the North Charleston police officer when he was shot in the back.
Senator, you have faced a fair amount of criticism, especially over the past few days, because you are the only black Republican senator, some have said that your party is using you, they’ve even thrown around the word “token,” as well. Your response to that criticism?
SCOTT: Well, I am also the only person in my conference who has been racially profiled, driving while black.
AL ROKER: Well, Senator, let me ask you this, the President just announcing that he’s gonna host a rally next week, Tulsa, Oklahoma, where hundreds of African-Americans were killed during racial unrest in 1921, and on Juneteenth, the day that folks mark the end of slavery in this country. Also rejecting the idea of removing confederate statues – or names, I should say – from military bases. You’re from a state where a lot of the statues are common, a lot of statues coming down. Do you think the President is listening to the conversation, and how do you feel about confederate statues being removed?
SCOTT: Well, I certainly think the states have an opportunity to look at where the statues are. And if they’re on public property, they should have a serious conversation about that. As you’ll remember, in 2015, we were able to remove the confederate flag from the top of the state dome, that was the right decision. I’ll give that to the states and let them move that forward. And if we do it right, we can bring this country together and unify it. If we do it wrong, then we’ll be talking about the past. I’d like to spend as much energy about monuments — that is an important conversation — I’d love to spend an equal amount of energy talking about school choice and public and charter schools. I’d love to spend more time talking about issues that make a better future, as much as we are looking in the past.
MELVIN: But, Senator, you do recognize –
ROKER: But what about the President? What about the President’s Juneteenth rally, and his choice of these things?
SCOTT: Well, Al, that’s a good question. I would certainly say that the more diverse our staffs, the more we avoid these public issues that come about. So I don’t have a good answer for that because I’m not on his staff and I don’t know what his plan is.
MELVIN: Are you going to be in Dallas today for the speech, Senator?
SCOTT: I am not. I’m working here in Washington on the Justice Act, I’m trying to get Republicans and Democrats to come together, our bill has some of the Democrat priorities in the bill. And so, I’m hopeful that we’ll be able to make a push next week on this package.
MELVIN: No-knock warrants, choke-holds, are they part of your package, as well?
SCOTT: Yeah, we do address no-knock warrants by bringing in more information around those. One of the things we’ve created is the Breonna Taylor Reporting Act, that requires all the agencies to provide us with more information. There is a suggestion that they’re not used very often. I think that suggestion will be proven false if we can get the information. It’s the exact same concern I had around the Walter Scott shooting, when you see the police report, it is so inconsistent with what happened, that when we’re talking about making decisions, we have really incomplete information. And we need that information. But, yes, we will start addressing some of these issues. We’ll provide more grants, more resources for those departments that want to train, and I think we should reduce the grants for those departments that do not want to train. And the last thing is that there are people within the conference who are working heavily on when we see the no-knock warrants and/or the choke-holds as a part of the legislation, different factions on the Democrat side and Republican side, trying to find the common ground to move it forward.
MELVIN: Senator, really quickly here, as you know, there’s also this – there’s this movement afoot in a lot of cities and states, as well, to reallocate money for police departments, taking some of the tens of millions, in some cases, hundreds of millions of dollars, from law enforcement and redirecting that money to social programs, community programs, education programs, that you just mentioned. What do you say to folks who are spearheading that effort?
SCOTT: Well, I’d say, I’d tap the brakes. You can do two things at one time. One, you have to continue to provide necessary resources to our police departments, but we may need to take a look at what should be included in that funding. As an example, my conversations with legislators on both sides of the aisle, mental health is a major component that can’t be really addressed by a law enforcement officer. That needs to be addressed by a social worker or a mental health expert. Perhaps there’s an opportunity for us to include, in police departments, more mental health experts. I would increase funding for that, not decrease funding for that. It’s one of the ways that we could solve some of the problems, and giving those resources so that we can have more experts coming to the door when necessary, especially when it’s an a habitual home that’s calling over and over again. Local law enforcement know the folks in the communities, that would give us a chance for both folks, the suspect and the officer, to go home and be so in a healthy way.
MELVIN: Alright, we didn’t get a chance to talk about the anti-lynching component, but we’ll bring you back –
SCOTT: Yes, that’s in the bill, too.
MELVIN: I know, I know.
SCOTT: It’s got to be there.
MELVIN: But you guys couldn’t get that passed last week.
SCOTT: Absolutely.
MELVIN: We can’t even get U.S. Senators to agree on what constitutes lynching.
SCOTT: Well, actually, that’s not accurate. We have already passed this legislation twice in the Senate.
MELVIN: Well, the amendment, though –
SCOTT: There is a debate on the floor, but that is an inconsistent and inaccurate statement. We passed it in the Senate, I hope that the House would just take up our bill and pass it. In the house bill, they actually have the exact legislation that we passed in the Senate. I think we’ll get it done if we can come to the same table.
MELVIN: You are correct, it has passed in the Senate.
SCOTT: Yes, sir.
MELVIN: But I think we’re talking about the amendment that was put up by the Senator from Kentucky.
SCOTT: Listen, I think he should withdraw the amendment, but that bill has already been passed. So I think we should focus on getting this done, because it is so important to our country, after 200 failures on anti-lynching, we’re right at the goal line. I hope we get it across the line.
MELVIN: Alright, I didn’t mean to get in the weeds there with you, Senator.
SCOTT: No, no, it’s all good, it’s all good.
MELVIN: For a second there, it was starting to feel like MSNBC, instead of NBC. Senator Tim Scott. Senator, thank you, always good to see you, sir.
SCOTT: Let’s do this again
MELVIN: Let’s do it.

Molotov Cocktail and Burning Police Car Items Sold on Google, Amazon, Etsy

The movement that spurns capitalism seems to embrace it if it serves its own purposes.
Amazon, Etsy, and Google all have sellers who are taking advantage of the current political situation on their platforms. Some of this merchandise includes caps with images of burning police cars on the front, a T-shirt with a character from popular video game Animal Crossing walking away from a burning police car, a “Fuck Police” T-shirt with a skull shoving a gun into a pig dressed as a police officer, and a sweatshirt with the label “Eat Cops, Not Pigs.”
“Blue Lives Murder” is also a shirt sold on all three platforms. This sometimes includes an image of a police officer beating outstretched hands. Other forms of apparel include shirts that say, “The First Pride Was a Riot.” Perhaps one of the stranger items is a “burning pig car pentagram alter piece.” A police car is on a candle covered in what appear to be flames.
Another shirt with the label “I am the Intolerant Left,” circled around a burning Molotov cocktail, is being sold for just $19.99 on Etsy. A baby onesie version of this is sold on Google Shopping for just a penny more. For those concerned about catching COVID-19, a facemask with a person throwing a Molotov cocktail is sold on Etsy. A vinyl decal sticker of a Molotov cocktail with “ACAB” is another example.
The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) notes that ACAB, which stands for “All Cops Are Bastards,” is a slogan that originated with “skinheads,” or white supremacists.
On Amazon, the seller who markets the ACAB hat with the image of a burning police car on it seems to be a clothing vendor. It also sells NFL shirts, Golden State Warriors masks, and shirts with Disney’s Baby Yoda. It is unclear whether the seller is licensed to use these images or not.
Another product found on Amazon Music is the song, “Kill A Pig.” The cover for the album is the artist holding up the bloody severed head of Derek Chauvin, the police officer charged in the death of George Floyd.
Amazon’s CEO Jeff Bezos recently released a statement that he was “happy to lose” customers over his support of the Black Lives Matter movement.

Pelosi’s DREAMERs Arrested at Arizona Riots Helping Criminal Mob – Riding in Vehicle “Loaded with Incendiary Devices”

Several DREAMERs were arrested this past week at the protest-riots in Arizona.

Maxima Guerrero

Illegal immigrant activist and DREAMER Maxima Guerrero was arrested at the riots last week.
She is an illegal alien community activist.
And Maxima Guerrero is violent.

The vehicle occupied by the illegal alien Dreamers, was “loaded with incendiary devices,” according to a high-level Phoenix Police source, who confirmed to Judicial Watch that Maxima Guerrero was among them.

Does anyone believe Maxima will make a law-abiding US citizen?

Judicial Watch reported:

Illegal immigrants protected by an Obama-era amnesty for adults who came to the U.S. as children are among the rioters arrested and charged with crimes in Arizona. One of them, 30-year-old Mexican illegal alien Maxima Guerrero, is a community organizer with a Phoenix-based grassroots migrant justice organization called Puente Movement. She has been shielded from deportation under Obama’s controversial program known as Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) since 2013. The former president issued the DACA executive order after Congress repeatedly rejected legislation offering illegal immigrants similar protections. The failed measure was called Development Relief and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM Act) and DACA recipients are often called “Dreamers.”

More than 100,000 DACA applicants have criminal histories, according to figures released late last year by the U.S. government. Many have been arrested for serious crimes such as murder, rape and driving under the influence. The government can deport those charged with crimes, immediately stripping them of the Obama protections but that rarely occurs. The recent Phoenix arrestees were apprehended in the course of criminal behavior, according to a local news report and information obtained by Judicial Watch from police sources on the ground. Guerrero and two other Dreamers were out rioting and looting in a “Justice for George Floyd” protest in downtown Phoenix, city police sources tell Judicial Watch. Phoenix Police Chief Jeri Williams said this in the media about the vehicles occupied by the arrested Dreamers: “Those cars were used to fortify and give rocks and water bottles, food to those individuals who were there to commit crime and damage, to do dangerous things to our community.”…

…The illegal immigrant Dreamers recently arrested by her officers are Mexican citizens who came to the U.S. illegally as youngsters and enjoy perks and protections that many other undocumented aliens do not. Part of the deal is that they respect law and order to avoid being deported. Instead, they were out at 3 a.m., well past a statewide curfew, and up to no good. A vehicle occupied by the illegal alien Dreamers, was “loaded with incendiary devices,” according to a high-level Phoenix Police source, who confirmed to Judicial Watch that Guerrero was among them. The Center for Immigration Studies (CIS) obtained a list from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) of those arrested that night. Besides Guerrero they include 26-year-old Jesus Manuel Orona, 21-year-old Roberto Carlos Cortes Mondragon and 22-year-old Johan Montes Cuevas. CIS reported last week that all of the illegal aliens were briefly detained, released on supervision and face deportation in addition to serious criminal charges.

CNN’s Sciutto Ignores Network’s Reporters, Cries Racism on Georgia Voting Lines

CNN Newsroom host Jim Sciutto is not one to miss an opportunity to engage in conspiracy mongering about voter suppression. On Wednesday’s show, Sciutto was so invested in the voter suppression narrative in the aftermath of the Georgia Primary that he ignored not one, but two of CNN’s own reporters telling him that the pandemic, not voter suppression, was a more innocent explanation of long lines.
Reporting from Atlanta, Dianne Gallagher told Sciutto and fellow host Poppy Harlow that many veteran poll workers were absent because they are disproportionately elderly and thus at risk to catching the virus, "I mean, look, this is the second time that primary had been postponed due to the pandemic and anything that could have gone wrong at least here in Fulton County did. We were talking about the shortage of poll workers and part of that was because so many of the people who work the polls in this country are older Americans, they’re vulnerable to COVID-19.

Gallagher also explained that this means the poll workers were inexperienced which added to the "brand new system," consolidated polling places, and social distancing measures led the secretary of state to warn that there would be long wait times.
Less than five minutes later, however, Sciutto was again pursuing the racism angle with Abby Phillip, "let’s be frank. Consolidation of polling places has been used to deliberately limit voter access. We shouldn’t mince words here."
Phillip did not deny the historic nature of Sciutto’s assertion, but again referenced the pandemic:
But one of the things that’s happening with the coronavirus is that in Georgia, in Fulton County we were told that some of the polling locations, maybe they were schools or churches, those facilities actually did not want to host polling sites base they feared contaminating their facilities with the coronavirus and then on top of that, if they had polling workers who pulled out at the last minute because they got sick or elderly or afraid of getting sick with the coronavirus, that exasperated an already existing problem.
Stubbornly, Sciutto told viewers, "folks we have to keep an eye on this as November approaches."
But, Sciutto was not done ignoring his own colleague’s reporting. In an interview with Martin Luther King III, Sciutto wondered if King saw something sinister in Georgia:
You saw just the horrendous voting lines in Georgia yesterday. There had been issues there about reducing the number of polling places and whether that disproportionately affects black neighborhoods and you have other states around the country pursuing voter ID laws which also disproportionately affects African-American voters. Are you concerned that today, in the year 2020, there are efforts in this country to suppress the votes of black Americans?
Maybe if Sciutto had watched his own network, he would be aware that in Georgia, polling place decisions are done at the county level, which in this instance is run by Democrats.
Here is a transcript of the June 10 show:
CNN
CNN Newsroom with Poppy Harlow and Jim Sciutto
9:17 AM ET
DIANNE GALLAGHER: Yeah, Jim, I mean, look, this is the second time that primary had been postponed due to the pandemic and anything that could have gone wrong at least here in Fulton County did. We were talking about the shortage of poll workers and part of that was because so many of the people who work the polls in this country are older Americans, they’re vulnerable to COVID-19. So in some counties, like Fulton and nearby DeKalb county they were still recruiting people the day before hand. Some inexperienced poll workers who were trying to operate a brand-new system that requires a lot of poll worker participation. So when you add in that inexperience complete with the social distancing measures which reduce the number of machines and made people stand further apart, it also consolidated the number of poll that’s been a problem in Georgia for a while. Reducing those number of polling places that people have to go to. That always extends the line. Now, the secretary of state warned because of the pandemic protocols that people would have to wait in line, that the wait times would likely be very long. But Jim, we talked to people who waited five, six hours yesterday to vote in a primary election. Now, Georgia did do robust vote by mail program beforehand. They sent out absentee request forms to everybody, but a lot of people in this particular county never got the absentee ballots they requested. So they weren’t planning on vote agent the primary but they H to show up anyway and we saw people waiting hours just to exercise their right.

9:21
JIM SCIUTTO: Abby Phillip, let’s be frank. Consolidation of polling places has been used to deliberately limit voter access. We shouldn’t mince words here.
ABBY PHILLIP: Yeah
SCIUTTO: Is there evidence, in the state of Georgia, that was deliberate?
PHILLIP: You know, we are still looking into that, but Jim, you’re absolutely right. That there have been historically efforts to consolidate polling places. So one of the things that lot of activists are looking out for are attempts by election officials to do those kinds of consolidation because they know that it has a disproportionate effect on minority communities.
SCIUTTO: No question. Hey, listen, it’s not just a question in Georgia and other states where there are voter I.D. laws, et cetera, and folks we have to keep an eye on this as November approaches. Abby Phillip, thanks very much.

9:32
SCIUTTO:  I want to ask you about voting.

Country Group Lady Antebellum Changes Name To ‘Lady A’ Over Racism Concerns

In a series of Tweets issued Thursday, the Grammy-winning country music group, Lady Antebellum, announced that they are changing their name to “Lady A,” in light of recent protests over the death of George Floyd during an arrest by Minneapolis police officers, and concerns their name brought to mind racist imagery.

The group — made up of musician trio Hillary Scott, Dave Haywood, and Charles Kelley — has used the name, “Lady Antebellum” since 2006, according to CNN. The name, the band said, originally referenced the typical southern-style “Antebellum” home, which to them, “reminded us of all the music born in the south that influenced us…southern rock, blues, R&B, gospel and of course country.”

They say they did not realize the association the name had with slavery.

“Antebellum” means “pre-war” in Latin, but is often used to refer to pre-Civil War southern culture.

In their statement, the band says they now regret the decision to adopt the “Lady Antebellum” name.

“We are regretful and embarrassed to say that we did not take into account the associations that weigh down this word referring to the period of history before the civil war, which includes slavery,” the social media post read.

“We’ve watched and listened more than ever these last few weeks, and our hearts have been stirred with conviction, our eyes opened wide to the injustices, inequality, and biases Black women and men have always faced and continue to face every day. Now, blindspots we didn’t even know existed have been revealed,” the group wrote on Instagram.

‘After much personal reflection, band discussion, prayer, and many honest conversations with some of our closest Black friends and colleagues, we have decided to drop the word “antebellum” from our name and move forward as Lady A, the nickname our fans gave us almost from the start,” they added.

In addition, the trio says, they will make up for their lack of sensitivity by sending funds from their aid organization to charities associated with the group Black Lives Matter.

“We feel like we have been Awakened, but this is just one step,” they said. “There are countless more that need to be taken. We want to do better. We are committed to examining our individual and collective impact and making the necessary changes to practice antiracism. We will continue to educate ourselves, have hard conversations, and search the parts of our hearts that need pruning—to grow into better humans, better neighbors. Our next outward step will be a donation to the Equal Justice Initiative through LadyAID.”

Lady Antebellum’s name change is just the latest in a string of moves related to the ongoing protests over racism and police brutality. On Wednesday, HBO Max announced that it would remove the classic film “Gone With the Wind” from its library until it could bookend the movie with an appropriate discussion on the story’s context, and could provide an appropriate disclaimer about the film’s depictions of race and slavery.

On Wednesday night, after pressure to cancel police-oriented television programs, Paramount network announced that it would drop the reality show “Cops” from its lineup, and A&E Network announced it would cancel the wildly popular “Live PD.” The New York Times suggested, also Wednesday, that networks should consider dropping the children’s cartoon, “Paw Patrol,” over its favorable depictions of law enforcement and first responders.
