Players for the Portland Thorns and the North Carolina Courage knelt during the national anthem Saturday when the National Women’s Soccer League opened the Challenge Cup tournament in Utah.
The players and coaches wore Black Lives Matter T-shirts in warmups before the game, which was nationally televised on CBS. The players also knelt during a moment of silence before kickoff.
“We took a knee today to protest racial injustice, police brutality and systemic racism against Black people and people of color in America. We love our country and we have taken this opportunity to hold it to a higher standard. It is our duty to demand that the liberties and freedoms this nation was founded upon are extended to everyone,” the Thorns and Courage said in a joint statement released before the game.
The league confirmed the day before that it would play the national anthem before the Challenge Cup games and that it would support the players in whatever they chose to do.
During the late match between the Red Stars and the Washington Spirit a few players remained standing. There was a touching moment when Chicago’s Julie Ertz consoled teammate Casey Short, who was overcome by emotion.
The NWSL is the first professional team sport in the United States to return amid the coronavirus outbreak. The monthlong Challenge Cup is being played without fans at Zions Bank Stadium in Herriman, Utah.
“Today, hopefully, it was a powerful statement,” Courage midfielder Sam Mewis said after her team defeated the Thorns 2-1. “It was an emotional time and I hope that both teams’ message comes through clearly.”
Thorns defender Becky Sauerbrunn said: “The (players’ association) has been about collaborating with teams on what we can do to maintain and sustain the conversation around racial injustice in this country.
“We made a strong statement and we wanted to kind of maintain that momentum that has been happening and to show official commitment to the cause,” she added.
Megan Rapinoe, who plays for OL Reign but opted out of the Challenge Cup, was criticized when she knelt at an NWSL game and a pair of U.S. national team games in 2016. She said she wanted to express solidarity with former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who took a knee during the anthem to bring attention to racial inequality.
In response, U.S. Soccer adopted a rule that required players to stand. But that rule was repealed earlier this month amid nationwide protests over the death of George Floyd and racial inequity.
Rapinoe voiced her support for the NWSL players Saturday on social media: “You love to see these women using their voice, demanding better for America, and for black people and people of color.”
Spirit Coach Richie Burke joined his players in kneeling before the late game.
“I’m grateful for everything this country has given me, but I feel the need to support the Black Lives Matter movement because I know this privilege isn’t the same for everyone. This is just the start. There is much more work to be done,” Burke said.
Mewis said the teams will continue to call attention to racial injustice throughout the Challenge Cup.
“I think we want to keep this momentum and keep the attention on the Black Lives Matter movement throughout this tournament,” she said.
The City of Minneapolis has spent $63,000 on private security details for three city council members who claim they have been subjected to threats in recent weeks.
Three members of the council, which pledged to seek a replacement for the city’s police department and on Friday “advanced a proposed ballot measure asking voters to create a new Department of Community Safety and Violence Prevention,” are receiving city-funded private security detail after claiming to have received threats in recent weeks. The security detail, provided by firms Aegis and BelCom, is costing the city roughly $4,500 per day.
As Fox 9 reported, the three council members who have the security detail are “Andrea Jenkins (Ward 8), and Phillipe Cunningham (Ward 4), and Alondra Cano (Ward 9)” all of whom have been “outspoken proponents of defunding the Minneapolis Police Department.”
Cano did not comment on the matter, while Cunningham told the outlet that the private security was temporary. He ultimately said he was not comfortable “publicly discussing the death threats against me or the level of security I currently have protecting me from those threats.”
However, Councilwoman Jenkins said she has been requesting security since being sworn into her position and told the outlet that she is concerned by “the large number of white nationalist(s) in our city and other threatening communications I’ve been receiving.”
Jenkins, who said she has received threats attacking her gender identity and ethnicity, specifically, admitted she has not reported the threats to Minneapolis Police — which the council has moved to abolish — suggesting she has been too consumed by the “global pandemic and global uprising” dominating the national narrative.
“A spokesperson for Minneapolis Police told FOX 9 the department does not have any recent police reports of threats against city council members. It is possible a report could have been filed confidentially,” the outlet reported.
A city spokesperson told Fox 9 that the private security detail, which has an hourly cost “similar” to that of a police officer, is expected to be temporary and explained that they opted for a private security detail to preserve Minneapolis Police Department resources for the community.
Minneapolis City Council President Lisa Bender has promised that the council would “dismantle the Minneapolis Police Department and replace it with a transformative new model of public safety.”
The city council took another step in that direction on Friday, advancing a ballot measure “that would ask Minneapolis voters to amend the City Charter to create a new Department of Community Safety and Violence Prevention and remove the Police Department as a charter department.” The department would be responsible for “public safety services prioritizing a holistic, public health-oriented approach” in lieu of police.
Madison Cawthorn, the Republican nominee for North Carolina’s 11th Congressional District, told Breitbart News on Wednesday that he promised President Donald Trump to win millennial voters’ support for the president’s reelection bid.
The 24-year-old Cawthorndefeated Lynda Bennett, 62, in the district’s Republican primary on Tuesday to fill a seat vacated by Mark Meadows. He won 65.9 percent of GOP primary voters against Bennett’s 34.1 percent.
Bennett received endorsements from Trump, Meadows, Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH), the House Freedom Fund, the Senate Conservative Fund, American Conservative Union, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), and Citizens United.
Trump called Cawthorn on Tuesday, congratulating the latter on his victory.
“I had a great conversation with President Trump last night,” Cawthorn recalled on Wednesday’s edition of SiriusXM’s Breitbart News Tonight with host Rebecca Mansour and special guest host Dylan Gwinn. “I’ll tell you that was probably one of the coolest phone calls I’ve ever gotten. It was from a switchboard director on Air Force One who then connected me [to] the President of the United States. When I was getting to talk to him, I vowed to him that I would secure the millennial vote for him.”
Cawthorn went on, “My plan for that is really not changing the conservative message, because our conservative values are time-tested. They have proven true, and it’s our American values that have made our country the greatest.”
“Our country is in perilous times,” said Cawthorn of his decision to enter politics. “I just got engaged, and my fiancée and I are planning on having a family. We’re talking about what that’s going to look like. [After] talking about that one night, I was outside alone. I was just thinking [to] myself, ‘Is this is really the culture I want to raise a child in?’ It was the first time I’d really thought about the reality, and the answer was, frankly, ‘No. I did not.’”
Cawthorn continued, “I’m not pleased with the way our country’s going. … We’ve seen what kind of generation that’s raised up. We see all these riots going on all over the country. We see just the [immorality]. … It’s a it’s a really dire time.”

“Globalist trade policies” have driven a loss of manufacturing jobs in America, said Cawthorn, highlighting NAFTA as an example.
“Currently, there are over one million square feet of factory space that is laying completely dormant here in western North Carolina,” Cawthorn stated. “It’s specifically damaging our counties on the far western reaches of our district.”
Americans should not compete with “slave labor” in China, Cawthorn held.
“Free trade sounds good when you just say it,” Cawthorn remarked. “Of course everyone wants to practice free trade. We have free market capitalism in America. Why can’t it work on a global perspective? But the real problem we’re facing is that people are not playing on a fair playing field. We are at a disadvantaged state here in the United States … especially when you look at other countries like China who practically practice a slave labor, and because of that, they’re able to just really price gouge.”
Cawthorn linked economic hardship to the creation of “fatherless homes.”
Mansour asked how Cawthorn would respond to pressure from interest groups in Washington, D.C., advocating for the expansion of H-1B visas and both legal and illegal immigration.
“So many [politicians] are indebted to — and almost chained and shackled to — super PACs, special interest groups, [and] big-name endorsements that come from outside of [their districts],” replied Cawthorn. “We have been very careful to not tie ourselves to any other ship other than a ship that is representing the people of Western North Carolina.”
Cawthorn continued, “We really do ourselves a great disservice by limiting the amount of influence that the people [of our] constituencies that make up these congressional districts all across our country have. … There’s millions and millions of dollars thrown in waves in front of these candidates, and you know that they’ll just jump through whatever hoop they want. Thankfully, our message resonated enough that we haven’t had to go out and seek super PACs or big-name endorsements.”
“My plan going to Washington, D.C., is that I’m going to do that exact same thing,” added Cawthorn. “I want to be a statesman, not a politician. I don’t want to be somebody who is speaking out of both sides of his mouth at all times [and] only shake the voter’s hand just when it’s for a good photo op.”
Cawthorn concluded, “Eventually that piper is going to come knocking, and you’re going to owe him, and at that point you’re no longer representing your constituency, but you’re representing a special interest group.”

A group of fathers in Churchill, Pennsylvania, are making sure their kids stay busy and smiling during the coronavirus pandemic.
When former semi-pro tight end David Anderson and his son launched a sports camp for their community recently, they had no idea it would grow to be so popular with families in the area, according to KMBC.
They dubbed the camp “Barbecue Chicken University” and help participants learn teamwork, responsibility, competition, and respect.
“I’m just a goofy guy. I just said, ‘Hey, this is Barbecue Chicken University, where we’re teaching you how to be a playmaker,’” Anderson recalled.
Every night, two hours of activities begin with warmups and stretches in the Anderson’s backyard. In the street, the kids perform speed and agility drills.
“I love this program. My kids love it. The kids are responding really well to it, so being as a parent and seeing the positivity that’s going on through the neighborhood and all the people that are coming out and supporting us is a great thing,” said participant Justin Newman.
A few weeks ago, a neighbor complained that the group was disturbing the peace and called the police. However, Officer Chris Shell later returned to the camp and said he wanted to spend time with the families.
Later, he answered the kids’ questions about the recent protests and other issues and Anderson said he was more than welcome to join them again in the future.
“It allows the kids to familiarize with law enforcement, let them know that not all cops are bad cops and, you know, be comfortable with them, talk to them, have a conversation,” Anderson commented.
He added that he would continue offering the program because kids needed positive influences in their lives.
“We get a pretty good outcome, you know, the kids are loving it,” he explained, adding, “They come back every day with smiles, they compete with smiles. What more can you ask for?”
Earlier this week the Gateway Pundit announced a prayer rally on Saturday at the iconic St. Louis Statue on Art Hill in Forest Park.
We planned the rally because there is currently a petition by local leftist and radical Umar Lee to remove this beautiful landmark in St. Louis City.
There is also a movement to rename the city because St. Louis was “Islamophobic.”
And like clockwork local Islamist Umar Lee and the left smeared TGP and Christians who planned on attending the prayer rally as “white nationalists.”
On Friday, in the most egregious attack on this rally yet, St. Louis City Treasurer Tishaura Jones posted several tweets attacking Mayor Krewson and labeling local Christians “KKK” for holding a prayer rally to save the St. Louis statue in Forest Park.
Of course, hundreds of Black Lives Matter and antifa activists turned out today to counter a Christian prayer rally.
Several of Christians turned out and at least three priests were in the crowd.
At one point Rev. Stephen Shumacher, a priest with the St. Louis Archdiocese took a microphone and started to tell the crowd about the life of St.Louis. Of course, none of the protest mob had any idea why they were there or who they were protesting.
As Father Shumacher tried to tell the mob about St. Louis the mob shouted him down, screamed at him and hurled insults.

Here is a message which should send a shudder down the spine of anyone who believes in the concept of equality before the law: a British police department openly admitting that it intends to give special, favourable treatment to Black Lives Matter.
Note the use of that weasel word ‘vigil.’ Presumably this comes from the same dictionary of politically correct excuse-making that led the BBC describe Black Lives Matter’s violent demos in London – in which 27 police officers were injured – as ‘largely peaceful.’
It’s a lie and an insulting lie at that. Vigils are what angels keep. Vigils are what servicemen keep over the bodies of their fallen comrades. Vigils are honourable, solemn, ancient – and have nothing whatsoever to do with a bunch of mostly white middle class, ‘uni’ graduates and Marxist agitators causing mayhem on the public streets under the pretence that they fighting against ‘structural racism.’
Note also that Northumbria Police are effectively declaring a two-tier policing system. Protest gatherings – even ones pretending to be ‘vigils’ – are illegal under the draconian legislation which was rushed through by the UK parliament in response to coronavirus. Yet here is Northumbria Police explicitly – and unilaterally – announcing to the world that they consider Black Lives Matter are exempt.
Why?
How can it possibly be justifiable – let alone fair – for any police department in the UK to turn a blind eye to (or indeed, as here, actively encourage) the hard left while simultaneously warning that anyone who wants to protest against this injustice will be liable for arrest?
Also, what the hell are the police doing giving special privileges to a Marxist organisation which not only wants them to be banned but thinks that All Cops Are Bastards?
I doubt – or at least hope – that no rank and file police in Northumbria (one of the more down-to-earth regions of Britain) support this lunacy. But then I suppose I wouldn’t be altogether surprised if some did because policing in Britain these days seems to be so heavily in thrall to the Social Justice Warrior values of Common Purpose and the radical left generally that they may well believe their job is to promote ‘anti-racism’ more than it is to uphold the law and keep the peace.
Some of us could see this coming a mile off. Police cars redecorated in the colours of unicorn vomit (in solidarity with LGBTQetc), policemen being encouraged to wear high heels and paint their finger nails in solidarity with something or other, policemen obsessed with hurty tweets but not with preventing knife crime or burglary or underage white girls being groomed and raped by gangs of Muslim brutes, policewomen getting half the top jobs more as a reward for being lesbian, etc than for showing any obvious talent. We saw all this happening and asked ourselves: but will this cucked, emasculated police be capable of responding if it all kicks off and some actual, old-fashioned law enforcement is required?
Well over the last few weeks we’ve had our answer: police in Bristol looking on (approvingly) as statues are dragged by mobs and dumped in the sea; police in London running away from the mob and being beaten up by more uncontrolled mobs.
Home Secretary Priti Patel has been talking some tough talk, saying she’s going to haul the head of the Metropolitan Police Cressida Dick over the coals for failing to keep order. But will she really have the appetite for the root and branch reform that’s needed? And where, among all the milquetoast, right-on, sociology graduates that now form the upper echelons of the police is she going to find officers with the mettle and backbone to restore the police to their original purpose?
I would suggest that maybe it’s time to put the Army in charge of law and order – except they’re now commanded by politically correct bedwetters too.
Britain, I fear, is toast. But then I look across at what’s happening in the U.S. and I see the same problem there too.
And to think that, up until quite recently, right-wingers like myself who pointed out that we were losing the culture wars to the radical left and that all our institutions had fallen to Social Justice Warriors were treated like tin-foil-hatted loons.
Such was the fate of Cassandra. Nothing changes. All I know that if Boris Johnson’s administration doesn’t get its act together soon on the law and order front, then we ain’t seen nothing yet. Come October, when the economic consequences of the government’s pointless coronavirus lockdown make themselves felt and unemployment starts to bite, that is when the shit is really going to hit the fan.
