Baltimore Student Who Failed All But Three Classes In Four Years Was Ranked In Top Half Of His Class

Authored by Jonathan Turley,

As teacher unions fight to keep schools closed, the true cost is being felt by students who are racking up failing gradesdropping out of virtual classesincreasing drug use, and, in rising numbers, committing suicide In response, some union officials like the President of the Los Angeles Teacher’s Union has labelled calls to return to class examples of white privilege despite overwhelming science supporting resumption of classes. However, for minority students, this shutdown has taken a dire situation and turned into a freefall disaster. The pandemic led to the closure of an already failing public school system, as evident in a shocking story out of Baltimore. As recently reported, a high school student almost graduated near the top half of his class after failing every class but three in four years. He has a 0.13 GPAHis mother finally went public in exasperation with the failures in the public schools.

Tiffany France is understandably upset. She is a mother of three who works three jobs to support her family. She was never told that her son failed 22 classes and was late or absent 272 days over his first three years of high school. She was called for only one teacher-student meeting and that meeting never occurred at Augusta Fells Savage Institute of Visual Arts.

France ultimately had to pull her son out of the school and enrolled him in an accelerated program to allow him to graduate in 2023.

For decades, we have spent huge amounts of money in school districts like Washington, D.C. and Baltimore as these cities and their leaders have failed to address these failures. We have had a lost generation of kids who have neither the education nor the trained skills to succeed in society. Yet, there is no accountability for the political and educational leaders in these cities.

In the meantime, school officials seem intent on driving top performing students from their systems in Boston, New York and other cities where advanced programs are being shutdown or suspended. Mayor Bill deBlasio proclaimed that public schools are a means to redistribute wealth as students continue to fail on every level in the system.  Other education officials have denounced “meritocracy” as racist.  These officials, including a recent congressman, attack standardized tests as racist rather than make real progress to improve performance on such tests for these children.

The top spending public school districts are also some of the worst performing school districts.  New York topped the per capita spending at $24,040 per kid. Washington, D.C. is close at $22,759.  Baltimore is often ranked in the top three per capita spending districts.

According to a 2019 study, over half of the New York City public schoolkids cannot handle basic math or English.  On tests, Asian kids shows a  74.4 percent proficiency in math with a 66.6 proficiency for whites, a 33.2 percent proficiency for Hispanics, and a 28.2 percent proficiency for African Americans.  Thus, more than two third of African American kids were not able to handle basic math in a school system with one of the highest per capita expenditures for students in country. Thus, public schools may be a vehicle for deBlasio to “redistribute wealth” but he is not distributing education or learning to those who need it the most.

In Washington, with the highest per capita spending on students, education officials “celebrated” a small improvement of scores in 2019. However, the scores would make most people cringe.  Only 21.1 percent of black students were proficient in math (as opposed to 78.8 percent for white students).

In Wisconsin, the 2019 scores (for students in grades 3 to 8 and grade 11) showed only 39.3% of students tested proficient or better in English/language and only 40.1% demonstrated a proficient or better understanding of math. Both showed drops. However, the racial disparity was particularly shocking. Ironically, the gap slightly narrowed due to white students declining in scores. However, in the eighth grade, only 12.1 percent of black students were proficient or advanced in English. There was still as 30 point gap for black students.

In the meantime, the pandemic has led to delays, reductions, or outright cancellations of standardized testing in many districts. So now students will not be going full-time to school and also not be tested on their proficiency in subjects in some districts. It is as if they did not exist, which is precisely the problem. Politically, they do not seem to register in terms of importance or influence. They are useful objects for politicians who use them for campaigns for more money or power. Yet, they seem utterly detached from any actual benefits as these leaders allow public schools to continue on the same course of proven failure.

Watching this happen to the public schools has been particularly hard for many of us who are ardent supporters of public education. Growing up in Chicago during the massive flight of white families from the public school system, I remained in public schools for much of my early education. My parents organized a group to convince affluent families remain in the system. They feared that, once such families left, the public schools would not only loose diversity but political clout and support. They also wanted their kids to benefit from such diversity. My wife and I also believe in that cause and we have kept our four kids in public schools through to college.  We believe public education plays a key role in our national identity and civics. They shape our next generation of citizens.  My children have benefitted greatly from public schools and the many caring and gifted teachers who have taught them through the years.

Reading accounts like that of Tiffany France is a disgrace. She is working three jobs and counting on the school system to give her three children and education . . . and a chance.  Yet, Baltimore and other cities have failed such children for decades. There is no accountability in the system.  These leaders are failing whole generations and leaving them to an endless cycle of poverty and crime. Yet, they are reelected or reappointed every year. Educational leaders demand more money but show little progress or success. The money evaporates and nothing seems to change for Tiffany France or her children.

The problem is not standardized testing. It is the lack of education where a student with below a 1.0 GPA could qualify for cum laude recognition in Baltimore. Decades and billions of dollars have been exhausted without significant improvement. However, the real cost of our failure is born by these students who find little solace in knowing that their per capita expenditures continue to rise as their scores continue to fall. If we ran our highway system like this, we would have billion-dollar gravel roads for highways. In our education system, we are spending billions but kids like Tiffany’s son are going nowhere fast.

Trump-Hating Backstabber Paul Ryan Will Hold Fundraiser for Never-Trumper Liz Cheney

For years Paul Ryan lied to President Trump and his voters.
Paul Ryan lied about funding a wall. He continued to fight hard for the globalist agenda even after President Trump shocked the elites with his huge election win in 2016.

Even after he left office Paul Ryan continues to attack President Trump.

Skunk Paul Ryan Is “Embarrassed” by Trump, Pushes FOX News to Break from President

And news broke today that Paul Ryan will hold a fundraiser for Liz Cheney next month.

Liz Cheney is an obsessed Trump-hater who voted to impeach President Trump in January and continues to attack him at every opportunity.

Now she has Paul Ryan in her corner.

Via Conservative Treehouse:

According to information obtained by Breitbart News, former House Speaker Paul Ryan is coming to the defense of Liz Cheney and will host a fundraiser on her behalf next month.

Not surprisingly, this will provide an opportunity for the K-Street lobbying multinationals to provide revenue for Ms. Cheney to defend her tenuous House seat from primary challengers who are lined up to take her out.

BREITBART – Former House Speaker Paul Ryan will hold a fundraiser for embattled House GOP Conference chairwoman Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) at the end of March, an invitation obtained by Breitbart News shows.

The fundraiser, a “virtual event,” is slated for Thursday, March 25 at 11 a.m. eastern. The invitation asks donors to give “suggested contributions” of $2,900 to “attend,” or $5,800 to be a “co-host” of the Ryan-Cheney event.

[…] Cheney, the daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, is now facing challenges from state Sen. Anthony Bouchard and a newly announced candidate state Rep. Chuck Gray. Polling in the race shows Cheney in serious trouble, and likely headed for an eventual loss. Republicans across the party have repeatedly attacked her by name, and ripped her aggressively in interviews and speeches at CPAC. Her standing in the party is diminishing quickly, much like Ryan’s did after a year plus as Speaker during Trump’s presidency. (more)

Liberals melt down on Twitter over video of Sen. Sinema’s thumbs-down vote against the minimum wage hike

Liberals who were hoping that Democrat Sen. Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona might vote in support of a minimum wage hike were disappointed and many angrily turned to social media to register their outrage.

The openly bisexual senator is also a moderate Democrat on many issues owing to the demographics of the state she represents. On Friday she voted alongside 7 other Democrats to kill the proposal from Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) to include the wage hike in the latest coronavirus relief package.

Sinema’s critics were especially outraged because of the way she entered her vote.

Did Sinema really have vote against a $15 minimum wage for 24 million people like this? https://t.co/Jv0UXLKLHI

— Sawyer Hackett (@Sawyer Hackett) 1614971844.0

"Kyrsten Sinema is the most vapid Democratic politician to come along in quite a while. Her shtick of funky hair and bright clothing as a mask for her apparent sociopathy is downright horrifying," tweeted Emma Vigeland, a progressive commentator.

"Sinema just jauntily gave the middle finger to tens of millions of low wage workers," tweeted another critic.

"Kyrsten Sinema giving the $15 minimum wage a ‘Gladiator’ style thumbs down would’ve been a left twitter joke a week ago," tweeted Ken Klippenstein, a reporter at The Intercept.

"No matter what you think of @kyrstensinema’s vote, these optics are horrible," tweeted journalist Yashar Ali. "You may think people don’t deserve to be paid more, but you don’t need to make a show of it."

Others were incensed that Sinema had brought a large chocolate cake into the Senate and compared her to Marie Antoinette, the historical figure known for a similar act.

"Incredible. On the day that she votes to block a raise in the minimum wage for 32 million working class Americans, @kyrstensinema not only walks into the Senate with a big chocolate cake but posts on FB about a future getaway to Bora Bora. ‘Let them eat cake,’ indeed," tweeted progressive activist Kai Newkirk.

"Kyrsten Sinema is an out-bi Senator but a closeted Conservative and wannabe Marie Antoinette," tweeted another critic.

"She’s decided she’s going to be a media darling as Marie Antoinette of the establishment. Dress in a super fun way, do performatively hip thumbs downs as she votes to kill higher wages & now rub it in with symbolic cake we can all eat instead of higher salaries," tweeted failed congressional candidate Cenk Uygur.

It turned out that Sinema had brought the cake for Senate staff who had to work through the night over a request by a Republican senator.

Sinema explained in a statement after the vote that she would support a raise in the minimum wage but not the inclusion of it in the coronavirus relief bill.

Cancel Culture Comes for Classic Cinema: TCM Wants ‘Problematic’ Films ‘Reframed’

Problematic pile ons have become such a popular pastime that Turner Classic Movies (TCM) is joining the fray by highlighting offensive content in its own movies.
As The Wrap reported on Wednesday, TCM “aims to shed modern light on the history and shortcomings of 14 different classic Hollywood films” in vignettes airing on Thursday nights in March that “re-introduce these problematic films.”
The project is called “Reframed: Classic Films In The Rearview Mirror” and each film is sandwiched between a prologue and epilogue of TCM hosts pontificating on how it doesn’t conform to today’s super woke standards. The hosts include Jacqueline Stewart who filmed HBO Max’s new introduction to “Gone With the Wind” and Ben Mankiewicz who is affiliated with far-left media outlet The Young Turks.
It’s not just obvious offensive racial portrayals like in “Gone With the Wind” or the use of blackface in “The Jazz Singer” that are discussed. They also make leaps by deconstructing gender roles, sexism and feminism through today’s liberal lens.
As The Wrap notes:
Some films on the list you may not have thought about as problematic. Katharine Hepburn’s "Woman of the Year" is an early example of a strong feminist character — but one who gives up her career to become a housewife struggling to make toast for her husband. "Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner" was seen as progressive in 1967 but raises eyebrows for Sidney Poitier’s character today. And there’s 1954’s "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers," which [TCM host Alicia] Malone called a "delightful musical but it involves a lot of kidnapping of women."
Surprise, surprise – we are also called to grapple with trans issues:
And Malone also pushed to include Alfred Hitchcock’s "Psycho" in the lineup, which has recently been reassessed for how it portrays a cross-dressing character as different, monstrous, evil and suffering from a mental illness. "What does it mean if you have a character who is dressing up in a film and is the scary monster of the movie? How does that make audiences then think about transgender people when they meet them in real life? What does it say about womanhood in general?" Malone said. "That’s one I’ve started to think about differently in the past couple of years. It doesn’t mean I don’t still love it for all of the reasons why it should be enjoyed, but it’s just given me another layer on top of it."
With cancel culture leading to books being banned, I suppose we should be grateful that these films aren’t simply being memory holed. For now, the price of classic movies being left uncensored is to sit through a lecture. But, with the speed in which even recent norms are being denounced as problematic, watching 5 minutes of woke virtue signaling before every movie doesn’t seem too far off. Somehow that doesn’t seem like a good thing for the future of cinema.
Here is the full "Reframed" movie schedule:
March 4: “Gone With the Wind” (1939), “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers” (1954), “Rope” (1948), “The Four Feathers’ (1939)
March 11: “Woman of the Year” (1942), “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner” (1967), “Gunga Din” (1939), “Sinbad, the Sailor” (1947), “The Jazz Singer” (1927)
March 18: “The Searchers” (1956), “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” (1961), “Swing Time” (1936), “Stagecoach” (1939), “Tarzan, the Ape Man” (1959)
March 25: “My Fair Lady” (1964), “The Children’s Hour” (1961), “Psycho” (1960), “Dragon Seed” (1944)

Cancel Hitchcock: ‘Psycho,’ ‘Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner,’ Among the Iconic Films Turner Classic Movies Deems Problematic

Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho and Rope are among the films that Turner Classic Movies has deemed “troubling and problematic,” joining the ranks of Gone with the Wind in a new series called “Reframed: Classic Films in the Rearview Mirror,” which seeks to scrutinize old movies through the lens of today’s identity politics.

The new TCM series, which launched on Thursday, also seeks to pick apart such innocuous movies as Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner? and My Fair Lady.

“Many of the beloved classics that we enjoy on TCM have stood the test of time in several ways, nevertheless when viewed by contemporary standards, certain aspects of these films can be troubling and problematic,” the cable network said.

Watch below:

The series will explore how these movies “can be reframed so that future generations will keep their legacy alive.”

Watch below:

TCM hosts will put Psycho under the microscope for its alleged portrayal of gender identity and the way it supposedly equates transgenderism with mental illness and violence. The Hitchcock classic, which was first released in 1960, stars Anthony Perkins as a motel manager whose split personality involves dressing up as his deceased mother to carry out a murder.

Rope (1948), inspired by the Leopold and Loeb homicides, tells the story of two roommates who dare to hide the body of their victim in their New York apartment just as they are about to host a dinner party. TCM is expected to explore the  movie’s take on the protagonists’ gay relationship.

TCM will dissect Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961) for actor Jerry Lewis’ performance as a Japanese man, and will scrutinize the musical My Fair Lady (1964) for any hints of misogyny in Professor Henry Higgins’ (Rex Harrison) tutelage of Eliza Doolittle (Audrey Hepburn).

Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner? (1967) will be examined for the now-problematic Sidney Poitier. The Oscar-winning Poitier was a huge Hollywood star at the time, but today he is no longer so beloved because his fanbase was mostly white audiences, according to TCM.

“That opens up all kinds of complications for black viewers who felt that he wasn’t a representative of the race as a whole,” TCM host Jacqueline Stewart told the Associated Press.

The Stanley Kramer movie was one of the first major Hollywood releases to portray an interracial romance in a positive way and was considered progressive for its time.

John Ford’s The Searchers (1956), starring John Wayne, will also receive a racial analysis. The seminal Western film follows the Wayne character’s attempt to rescue his niece (Natalie Wood), who was kidnapped by Comanches. The movie is considered one of the greatest films of all time and has influenced many other movies, including Taxi Driver and American Sniper.

“The Wayne character is overtly racist, and many argue that the label also applies to the film itself, as the characterization of Indigenous people is both stereotypical and underdeveloped,” said TCM.

Gone with the Wind will also feature in the new series. The 1939 classic was already blacklisted by TCM’s corporate sibling HBO Max, which temporarily pulled the movie following accusations that the story glorifies the antebellum South.

Other movies in the TCM series include The Jazz Singer, Stagecoach, Tarzan, the Ape Man, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, Sinbad, the Sailor, and The Children’s Hour.

Exclusive – Ted Cruz Amendment Would Block Stimulus Checks for Illegal Aliens in Coronavirus Package

An amendment by Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) to the proposed coronavirus relief package passed out of the House last week would ensure that stimulus checks are not awarded to illegal aliens living in the United States, Breitbart News has exclusively learned.

Senate Democrats opened debate on the $1.9 trillion relief package without any GOP support, and it will need to go back to the House for approval if the Senate passes the legislation.

Included in the package are $1,400 stimulus checks that currently could go to illegal aliens if not explicitly blocked. Cruz, in an amendment announced on Friday, is seeking to prevent illegal aliens from getting stimulus checks, which his office said would save American taxpayers nearly $8 billion.

“Not only does this COVID bill fail to address the real needs of the American people who are suffering, but it hands out billions in taxpayer dollars to illegal immigrants,” Cruz said in an exclusive statement to Breitbart News.

“Congress should come together to pass my amendment to stop this,” Cruz said. “We need to stand for the American people, get our kids back to school, and reopen our small businesses.”

In the package’s current form, illegal aliens could secure subsidies for COBRA healthcare premiums.

Last month, Sens. Tom Cotton (R-AR) and Todd Young (R-IN) helped pass a budget amendment — with support from eight swing state Democrats — to make it more difficult for stimulus checks for illegal aliens to be included in the relief package.

Arizona State Dean: Grading Writing Based On Quality Is ‘Racist,’ Promotes ‘White Language Supremacy’
