The Western Journal is presenting this memorandum, written by two prominent conservative legal scholars, essentially verbatim, with only enough editing to format it for the Op-Ed section of our website. Bacon (Oh, And Toilet Paper) Shortages Erupt As Americans ‘Panic Hoard’ Ahead Of COVID Winter
Tyler Durden
Sun, 11/22/2020 – 19:30
America is transforming into a nation of preppers as COVID winter sets in. We outlined weeks ago (see: here & here), round two of panic hoarding was well underway if that was for toilet paper, non-perishable food, and or ammunition.
Bloomberg is only now reporting, "households across the US are once again filling grocery carts brimful in the second round of panic buying as the virus surges and states clamp down on economic activity. Defensive purchasing is affecting everything from paper towels to bacon. Even the world’s biggest retailer is reporting shortages of high-demand items, including cleaning supplies, breakfast foods — and the most important commodity in any bathroom."
Several executives from major corporations are warning about supply chain stress as consumers gobble up high-demand items as the second virus wave spirals out of control.
"It really does have everything to do with what’s happening with Covid cases in any particular community," Walmart’s chief executive officer, Doug McMillon, said on an earnings call last week.
"We’re going to be able to respond in this instance better than we did in the first half of the year, although we’re still — as a total supply chain — stressed in some places," McMillon said.
According to Centricity Inc., a firm that tracks online search activity, demand for non-perishable items has skyrocketed 60-70% in the last several weeks.
Mike Brackett, Centricity’s chief executive officer, said the recent surge in panic hoarding trends is on top of the "meteoric" year-over-year increases for pantry staples.
Jim Dudlicek, a spokesman for the National Grocers Association, said consumers would start to see purchase limits again as the COVID winter has led to another surge in high-demand items at supermarkets nationwide.
Kraft Heinz Co. chief executive officer Miguel Patricio said investing in product lines comes as high-demand items fly off the shelves.
"New machinery, or even bringing back to lifelines that we considered in the past as obsolete," Patricio said, adding that the company is "increasing capacity of products like Philadelphia Cream Cheese or macaroni and cheese."
Mark Schiller, chief executive officer of Hain Celestial Group Inc., said his company has been ready for the next round of buying panic – during the pandemic, he said his Terra vegetable chips and plant-based Dream milk were hot items among consumers.
"We are far better prepared," Schiller said. "We have about 50 million more dollars of inventory on hand, of all the things that have the longest supply chain and the least amount of backups."
And now for the toilet paper shortage, we alerted readers as supermarkets were placing limits on rolls, outlining weeks ago how internet searches for "where can I buy toilet paper online" and "toilet paper shortage" were beginning to rise.
Kimberly-Clark Corp., Scott and Cottonelle toilet paper makers, told Bloomberg that production has been "accelerated" since March.
Procter & Gamble Co. spokeswoman Jennifer Corso said the maker of Charmin continues "to work around the clock to produce the product as quickly as possible."
"Paper towel consumption is related to increased cleaning situations, as consumers are cleaning more frequently," Corso said. "Toilet paper consumption is tied to the increased amount of time consumers are spending at home. For both, people are consuming more and stocking their pantries at a higher level than before the pandemic."
We also pointed out the toilet paper shortage, and resulting purchase limits at supermarkets have led to the increased search activity of "best bidet."
Panic hoarding 2.0 comes as searches across the country for "panic attacks" and "night terror" have soared, coinciding with the rise of virus cases across the US.
A nation of panic hoarders is indicative of an uncertain future as cases, hospitalizations, and deaths are climbing into the holiday season as the economy risks a double-dip recession. Somehow the stock market, at all-time highs, misses the fact the nation is still in an economic and health crisis.

President Donald Trump is doing exactly what he promised his supporters he would do by fighting for every possible legal way to win the election.
His opponents — the media, Democrats, Never Trump — say that Trump is living down to their worst expectations of him, that by refusing to accept defeat he is vindicating their hatred of him.
They are right about only one thing: this is the same Donald Trump we knew all along, and his tenacity is how he became an extraordinary president.
No other president would have stared down the opposition and appointed three conservative Supreme Court justices. No other president would done Operation Warp Speed when “fact checkers” said it would take a miracle. No other president would have built the wall anyway. No other president would have looked at the Middle East and thought: “I can solve that.” No other president would have torn up NAFTA, pushed back against China, and told NATO it was time to put up or shut up.
Throughout his career and his presidency, Trump has set goals and done everything he could, within the law, to achieve them. He accepts defeat, but never gives up.
For months, he has been telling anyone who will listen — and his opponents clearly do not — that he will leave office if he loses. Just last week, he said he’d “do the right thing” if he lost. He simply refuses to accept he has lost until all the legal votes are counted and the last gavel has come down in the last court of appeal.
Peggy Noonan says Trump is damaging the country by continuing to fight. Did she tell Democrats they were damaging America by filing hundreds of lawsuits to change voting procedures in the middle of an election, taking advantage of a pandemic to force vote-by-mail in places it had never been used before?
Did she understand, as California Republicans did, what winning on Election Day and then losing when the late ballots come in would do to public confidence in our elections?
The worst damage is being done by our pundit class, who keep telling the public that the president is attempting a coup by going through the legal process.
It is they who promoted “Russia collusion,” the Mueller investigation, and the impeachment scam, while the FBI destroyed civil liberties and the Deep State undermined the Trump administration for the better part of four years. It is Trump who is standing for the rule of law, and his opponents who once again stand for exactly the opposite.
Was it not Hillary Clinton who told Joe Biden not to concede the election “under any circumstances”?
If “projection” is a tactic, Democrats are its masters.
Adam Schiff, who lied to the country for years about Russia collusion, then lied about his contact with the “whistleblower” who triggered impeachment, now complains that Trump is undermining the “peaceful transition of power.” CNN, who gave James Clapper and Andrew McCabe contributorships after their role in the Russia hoax, now protests that Trump is “sabotaging” the new administration by digging in his policies and personnel.
When Democrats and the media tell us that Trump is undermining democracy by fighting for every vote, they are also attacking Trump supporters. Indeed, the attacks have become more explicit on social media: Hollywood celebrities who worshiped at Barack Obama’s feet tweet about Trump’s “deathkkkult.”
Conservatives, who adore the Constitution first and foremost, will be the first to abandon Trump if he goes beyond the legal process. And they haven’t, because he hasn’t.
The idea that any of Trump’s critics would have applauded him for delivering a nice concession speech on Election Night is delusional. Joe Biden, calling for “unity,” can’t even bring himself to denounce recent violence against Trump supporters and threats against Trump’s lawyers. House Democrats and New York prosecutors keep vowing to continue politically-motivated investigations against the president, regardless. It is banana republic behavior — and enthusiastically endorsed by the media.
If Trump had given up without a fight, the media would be plastering the Internet stories from disillusioned Trump voters, telling us that they had been abandoned, that a con man had taken them for a ride and then disappeared when the going got tough.
Instead he is doing — as always — exactly what he promised to do, which is also the minimum Democrats demand of their candidates.
Nearly half of Americans — including a third of Democrats! — believe the election was stolen. We have a legal, judicial, and constitutional process, and Trump intends to use it until he can’t anymore.
That is who we elected in 2016 — the man who, after losing the Iowa caucuses, congratulated his opponent graciously, then spent months calling him “Lyin’ Ted” until new battles, and common enemies, brought them together.
This is still Trump, and this is still America, and we still don’t quit.

Business owners in Buffalo-area took a defiant stand against Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s coronavirus-related restrictions on Friday, telling a local health inspector and sheriffs deputies, who showed up to enforce Cuomo’s arbitrary restrictions, to immediately leave their property because they did not have a warrant to be there.
Robby Dinero, owner of Athletes Unleashed in Orchard Park, gathered dozens of area business owners at his gym on Friday night to discuss Cuomo’s latest business-killing restrictions, according to WGRZ-TV. Their goal was to plan how to survive the newest restrictions.
But, about 20 minutes into the meeting, members from the Erie County Department of Health and deputies from the Erie County Sheriff’s Department barged into the meeting, telling those gathered that they were violating Cuomo’s restrictions that prohibit gatherings of more than 10 people.
What happened next was caught on video and is going viral.
One of the people at the gatherings told the health department official to have compassion on area businesses and went she said that she does, another business owner told the official, "OK, well you need to go have compassion out in the parking lot."
"This is private property. This is private property. This is private property," the man told the health department official. The man then told the sheriff deputies to "do your jobs."
"Your job is to remove people who are not wanted here," the man said. One of the deputies responded by lecturing the business owners for not wearing face masks.
Another man then said, "You guys need to leave because right now, you’re trespassing without a warrant. You need to leave." Others repeated, "Go get a warrant."
After more back-and-forth, the business owners continued to tell the health department official and sheriff deputies that they needed to leave because they were trespassing on private property.
"You don’t get to violate the Constitution," one of the business owners said. "You don’t circumvent or subvert the Constitution."
The video ends as the business owners shout in unison, "Get out!" The deputies and health department worker are then driven out of the gym.

In an interview with the Buffalo News, Tim Walton, who attended Friday night’s event, said the business owners are not doubting the existence of COVID-19, but rather the arbitrary nature of Cuomo’s restrictions.
Meanwhile, Health Department spokeswoman Kara Kane told the Buffalo News, "We are gathering information and will have more to share in our press conference on Monday."
