The Los Angeles Unified School Board unanimously approved a plan on Tuesday to cut one-third of its school police force and divert millions in funding towards the hire of social workers, restorative justice advisors, and "climate coaches."
The move will result in 133 positions being removed from the Los Angeles School Police Department — including 70 sworn officers, 62 non-sworn officers, and one support staff member, leaving the department with a total of 211 officers, the Los Angeles Times reported.
The "climate coaches" set to replace police officers in secondary schools will be members from the community who, according to the Times, "will work to promote positive school culture and address implicit bias."
According to the LAist, police will no longer patrol school campuses, but will only be called to respond during emergencies.
The union representing school police blasted the move in a statement Wednesday, warning the board’s decision "will place our children and staff in harm’s way."

The decision followed months of protesting by community activists who called on the board to completely defund the school’s police force. Critics claimed that the police presence had a disproportionately negative effect on the district’s black and latino students.
During the protests, the student advocacy group, "Students Deserve," proposed the idea of a climate coach position as a way to prevent violence on the campuses without the use of force.
The group’s director, Joseph Williams, told the LAist: "We don’t need police and handcuffs. I speak from personal experience as somebody who was criminalized at 13 years old and spent time in a juvenile detention center and was charged with assault and battery for getting in a fight with another kid."
According to Williams, the coaches will prevent fights on campus by forging friendships with students and understanding the social environment.
"Student safety is everyone’s responsibility and starts with creating a school environment that is centered in students’ social-emotional wellbeing," LAUSD Board President Kelly Gonez said in a press release announcing the plan’s approval. "The Board’s investment in the Black Student Achievement Plan ensures we are actively working to promote equity across the District."
"I believe that today we are taking an important step in the right direction to provide Black students with vital investments in their success — with millions of dollars going toward academic support, social-emotional resources, and a new approach to school climate and safety," added board member, Nick Melvoin. "This student and community driven action was long overdue, and we will continue working toward our District’s goal of providing every child with the opportunity to succeed and meeting the unique needs of our local school communities."

Researchers at Harvard Medical School say they’ve found the key to reducing coronavirus infections in the black community: trillions of dollars’ worth of reparations.
A study published last week in the Social Science & Medicine journal found that paying $250,000 in reparations to individual descendants of slaves, or $800,000 per family, could have mitigated coronavirus transmission rates among black Americans. The Harvard study analyzes the effects of "pre-intervention" reparations—or payments if they had existed before the coronavirus pandemic—on COVID-19 contact rates and transmission of the virus.
Dr. Michelle Morse—one of the Harvard Medical School assistant professors who led the study—told the Harvard Crimson that reparations "could have been as effective" at combating the coronavirus in African-American communities as a vaccine. Duke University professor William Darity, an economist and reparations advocate who co-authored the Harvard study, recently estimated that such payments would cost up to $12 trillion.
The Harvard team’s research was conducted as part of the Lancet Commission on Reparations and Redistributive Justice, which is expected to release a full report on worldwide reparations this summer.
The study was published days before the House Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights, and Civil Liberties held a hearing on H.R. 40, a bill that would establish a reparations task force to study the lasting effects of slavery and segregation and "recommend appropriate remedies." More than 170 Democrats have cosponsored the bill, which has gained traction since Democrats took control of Congress in January.
The Harvard researchers picked Louisiana—which has one of the highest income distribution inequality rates in the country—to represent racial disparities across the United States. The scientists compared rates of coronavirus transmission in the Bayou State with those in South Korea and hypothesized that rates of coronavirus transmission among black Louisianans would have been lower if reparations had already been in place. The study also notes that "wealth redistribution would decrease the ability of affluent whites to cloister themselves in a setting of relative exclusivity."
Reparations would have reduced overcrowded housing within the black community and provided black Americans with more access to personal protective equipment. Payments would also have kept black Americans from being forced to take jobs as frontline workers, the study said.
The White House on Wednesday said President Joe Biden would support creating a commission to study reparations. Last fall, Biden tapped reparations advocate Mehrsa Baradaran to work on his Treasury Department transition team.
Some localities have already taken steps to institute reparations: Asheville, N.C., passed one form of reparations that would help boost home ownership and career opportunities for black citizens in July. And the California state legislature established a reparations task force to analyze the effects of slavery on black residents in September.

In a startling about-face this week, Facebook decided to reinstate a popular pro-second amendment group’s page, saying its permanent removal from the platform was the result of an "enforcement error."
The Virginia Citizens Defense League’s Facebook page was restored this Saturday after having been permanently removed by the tech giant in January, the Washington Free Beacon reported.
In a vague statement to the news outlet, a Facebook spokesperson said, "After further review, we concluded that this page was removed as an enforcement error and have since restored it." No further details were provided.
The social media company was similarly opaque in its explanation last month for the page’s initial removal. At the time, a Facebook representative confirmed to TheBlaze that the page had been removed and its administrators disabled after an investigation found some content on the page had violated the company’s Community Standards. A Facebook "group" operated by the gun group remained active on the platform.
A different representative informed the Free Beacon, "[The removal] was correctly actioned and we will not be republishing."
Only now the company has republished the page, yet again without explanation. One would think that such an aggressive back-and-forth would dictate some clarification, but apparently that’s not how Facebook sees it.
"It’s like the left hand doesn’t know what the right hand is doing," said Philip Van Cleave, president of the active gun-rights advocacy group, after the page had been restored. "Now we’re just waiting to see how long this lasts before we’re banned again."
VCDL reportedly had used its Facebook page, which boasts 67,000 followers, to organize events and inform concerned citizenry about anti-gun legislative initiatives, such as Democratic Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam’s controversial 2020 gun control agenda. But now Van Cleave says that Facebook’s dizzying and secretive actions may cause the group to look to other social media platforms to engage with followers.
"This has kind of forced us to speed up some of the expansions to other platforms," he reportedly said. "So that if we continue to be a bouncing ball, we can have stability somewhere else."
As of Thursday afternoon, the page was unavailable. But Facebook confirmed to TheBlaze that it had not taken any subsequent action towards the page since restoring it.

The Michigan secretary of state removed 177,000 inactive voters from the state’s voter rolls after settling a legal challenge.
The stateremoved the names from the voter rolls in late January because the voters no longer live in the state or did not respond to the state’s inquiries about their addresses, according to a Tuesday district court announcement. The state performed the post-election audit during a legal battle with the Honest Elections Project, an election watchdog.
Michigan certified the election results in November claiming Joe Biden won by 154,000 votes.

New weekly jobless claims unexpectedly rose by 13,000 to 861,000 in the week that ended February 13, the Department of Labor said Thursday.
Economists had expected claims to fall to 768,00 from the 793,000 initially reported for the prior week. The previous week’s figure was revised up by 55,000 to 848,000.
Jobless claims can be volatile week to week so economists like to look at the four-week average. This fell to 833,250, 3,500 below the prior week’s average.
Jobless claims—which are a proxy for layoffs—remain at extremely high levels. Prior to the pandemic, the highest level of claims was 695,000 hit in October of 1982. In March of 2009, at the depths of the financial crisis recession, jobless claims peaked at 665,000.
Even when the economy is creating a lot of demand for workers, many businesses will shed employees as they adjust to market conditions. But in a high-pressure labor market, those employees quickly find jobs and many never show up on the employment rolls. What appears to be happening now is that many workers who lose their jobs cannot quickly find replacement work and are forced to apply for benefits.
Claims hit a record 6.87 million for the week of March 27, more than ten times the previous record. Through spring and early summer, each subsequent week had seen claims decline. But in late July, the labor market appeared to stall and claims hovered around one million throughout August, a level so high it was never recorded before the pandemic struck. Claims moved down again in September and had made slow, if steady, progress until the election.
Continuing claims, which get reported with a week’s lag, fell by 64,000 to 4,494,000.
There are two new programs offering unemployment benefits to people previously ineligible, such as self-employed workers or small business owners. The total number of continued weeks claimed for benefits in all programs for the week ending January 30 was 18,340,161, a decrease of 1,325,567 from the previous week.

Project Veritas showed Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg worried about the “long-term side effects” of COVID-19 vaccinations. Those same comments wouldn’t be allowed on his own platform.
It’s even unclear whether Facebook will censor this story about his concerns.
Guerrilla journalism group Project Veritas shared leaked footage of Zuckerberg voicing skepticism about mRNA COVID-19 vaccinations during a July 2020 talk. Project Veritas summarized that “[Zuckerberg] was worried about the impact a COVID-19 vaccine would have on an individual’s DNA and RNA.” Zuckerberg’s precise statement expressed extreme caution about the developing treatment to solve the COVID-19 pandemic:
“But I do just want to make sure that I share some caution on this [mRNA vaccine] because we just don’t know the long-term side effects of basically modifying people’s DNA and RNA … basically the ability to produce those antibodies and whether that causes other mutations or other risks downstream.”
Project Veritas alluded to an announcement Facebook made earlier on Feb. 8 that the platform was “Expanding our efforts to remove false claims on Facebook and Instagram about COVID-19 and vaccines.” One key detail Project Veritas illuminated was that “In this new policy, Facebook specifically stated that any claims that the vaccine changes an individual’s DNA would be removed.”
Project Veritas also shared footage and a brief transcript of Zuckerberg speaking on a Nov. 30 livestream with National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) director Doctor Anthony Fauci. In the public discussion with Fauci, Zuckerberg made statements that were the complete opposite of what he was caught saying in private back in July:
“Mark Zuckerberg: ‘Just to clear up one point, my understanding is that these vaccines do not modify your DNA or RNA. So that’s just an important point to clarify, if I’m getting anything wrong here of course correct me, but just to make that clear…’”
