Black GOP Lawmakers Call On Museum To ‘Honor’ Justice Clarence Thomas

Freshman Republican Representative Byron Donalds of Florida is leading a group of black Republicans who are asking the National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) to ‘honor’ Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas and improve an exhibit that they allege “falls short” in appropriately representing his legacy. They call this upgrade “long overdue.”

As reported by Fox News on February 4, the group sent a letter to heads of the museum. It is reportedly signed by Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.), Rep. Burgess Owens (R-UT), Dr. Alveda King, Heritage Foundation President Kay Coles James, and GOP commentator Paris Dennard, among others.

Donalds commends the museum, writing: “This museum is a national treasure for our nation’s fabric – this is especially true for me as a Black American and Republican…Black History transcends political correctness and partisanship…Overall, the NMAAHC honors its mission, but it is unfortunate to see pitfalls likely driven by irresponsible bias.”

This is not the first time that the museum has been called out by Republicans for its portrayal of Justice Thomas. When it opened in 2016, Fox News reports that Thomas was “only mentioned in connection with Anita Hill — a former staffer of Thomas, who accused him in 1991 during his confirmation hearing, of making sexually explicit comments and unwanted advances toward her while she worked for him at the Education Department and Equal Employment Opportunity Commission in the 1980s.”

Thomas notably described the entire process as a “high-tech lynching,” denying the allegations.

In 2017, there was a new exhibit at the museum, which Thomas said was put in without him being told. The second exhibit displays information about Thurgood Marshall and Clarence Thomas, the Supreme Court’s two African American justices. The Washington Post reports that it includes “a photograph of Thomas at his Supreme Court investiture on Nov. 1, 1991, a picture of him as an undergraduate at the College of the Holy Cross and a copy of Jet magazine with his image on the cover.”

According to the Post:

The [exhibit’s] text also compares the two judges: “Where Marshall advocated judicial action, Thomas encouraged judicial restraint. Thomas has cited varied influences on his worldview over time, from his grandfather’s teaching to the speeches of Malcolm X and the writings of Thomas Sowell. On the Supreme Court, he self-identifies as an independent thinker who interprets the Constitution’s original intent.”

In his letter addressing the exhibits, Representative Donalds writes that “Black history cannot and should not be political…The American people deserve an unbiased assessment of the trailblazers in the Black community — it is time to honor Justice Thomas with this long-overdue documentation of his whole life and history and not the disingenuous effort displayed today.”

Representative Owens also called on the museum to update the exhibit, telling Fox News, “As one of the only two Black men to serve on our nation’s highest and most distinguished court, U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas deserves unbiased recognition from the National Museum of African American History and Culture…”

The museum’s director, Kevin Young, declined an interview with Artnet News. However, he provided a statement regarding the letter:

“While all our exhibitions are based on rigorous research, they are still open to interpretation,” it reads. “Through scholarship, publications, and education, the museum will continue to explore the rich contributions and complexity of African Americans.”

Rush Limbaugh defined conservatism for a generation. In his words, this is who conservatives are.

Conservatives are in mourning. Rush Limbaugh, the No. 1 conservative radio talk show host, whose voice reached tens of millions of Americans for more than 30 years, died at 70 Wednesday, succumbing to late-stage lung cancer.

After his passing, many prominent conservatives, in their tributes to America’s Anchorman, credited the late patriot with founding the conservative media industry. They remember him as a tireless advocate for beliefs shared by millions of Americans whose voices are to this day ignored by the mainstream, "drive-by media" Rush would so often vilify on his program.

Limbaugh’s critics have vilified him in turn, predictably and boringly recalling, in the words of NBC News for example, "his long history of sexist, homophobic and racist remarks" to commemorate his death. Such critics accuse Limbaugh of inflaming "the partisan divide that came to characterize political discourse in the United States." This is the way the mainstream media and the left would have most Americans remember Rush, if at all.

That is not who Rush Limbaugh was. That is not how he should be remembered. And he would tell you so himself.

"I’ve made mistakes and try to own up to them, but I just wish one out of a hundred of my critics had ever actually listened to an entire show of mine," Limbaugh once said.

Those that did listen to Rush know who he was. Rush Limbaugh was a conservative. To understand what that means, to genuinely understand Rush Limbaugh and who he thought he was, there’s perhaps no better place to begin than a speech he gave in 2009.

President Barrack Obama had just assumed office. Republicans and conservatives were swept out of power in the election, with the Democratic Party achieving full control of the federal government with a supermajority in the United States Senate. The conservative movement was arguably, in terms of holding federal elected office, at its weakest position since before Ronald Reagan was president.

Speaking at CPAC 2009, to a movement facing recent defeat, Rush gave what he called his "first ever address to the nation" broadcast on national TV, courtesy of Fox News. Speaking for nearly 90 minutes, encouraged on by the American Conservative Union leaders organizing the event, Limbaugh spoke directly to the American people about who conservatives are, what we believe in, and why we are eternally optimistic because our core principles are right and true.

Excerpts from that address, quoted below, should serve as the final word on who Rush Limbaugh was, what he believed in, and why millions of Americans love him and mourn him.

Now, seriously, for those of you watching on C-SPAN as well, and on Fox, I want to tell you who we all are in this room. I want to tell you who conservatives are. We conservatives have not done a good enough job of just laying out basically who we are because we make the mistake of assuming people know. What they know is largely incorrect based on the way we are portrayed in pop culture, in the Drive-By Media, by the Democrat Party.

Let me tell you who we conservatives are: We love people. When we look out over the United States of America, when we are anywhere, when we see a group of people, such as this or anywhere, we see Americans. We see human beings. We don’t see groups. We don’t see victims. We don’t see people we want to exploit. What we see — what we see is potential. We do not look out across the country and see the average American, the person that makes this country work. We do not see that person with contempt. We don’t think that person doesn’t have what it takes. We believe that person can be the best he or she wants to be if certain things are just removed from their path like onerous taxes, regulations and too much government.

We want every American to be the best he or she chooses to be. We recognize that we are all individuals. We love and revere our founding documents, the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence. We believe that the preamble to the Constitution contains an inarguable truth that we are all endowed by our creator with certain inalienable rights, among them life. Liberty, Freedom. And the pursuit of happiness. Those of you watching at home may wonder why this is being applauded. We conservatives think all three are under assault.

We don’t want to tell anybody how to live. That’s up to you. If you want to make the best of yourself, feel free. If you want to ruin your life, we’ll try to stop it, but it’s a waste. We look over the country as it is today, we see so much waste, human potential that’s been destroyed by 50 years of a welfare state. By a failed war on poverty.

We love the people of this country. And we want this to be the greatest country it can be, but we do understand, as people created and endowed by our creator, we’re all individuals. We resist the effort to group us. We resist the effort to make us feel that we’re all the same, that we’re no different than anybody else. We’re all different. There are no two things or people in this world who are created in a way that they end up with equal outcomes. That’s up to them. They are created equal, given the chance – –

We don’t hate anybody. We don’t — I mean, the racism in this country, if you ask me, I know many people in this audience — let me deal with this head on. You know what the cliche is, a conservative: racist, sexist, bigot, homophobe. Excuse me, ladies and gentlemen of America, if you were paying attention, I know you were, the racism in our culture was exclusively and fully on display in the Democrat primary last year.

It was not us asking whether Barack Obama was authentic. What we were asking is: Is he wrong? We concluded, yes. We still think so. But we didn’t ask if he was authentically black. We didn’t say, as some Southern Christian Leadership Conference leaders said: Barack is not authentic, he’s not got any slave blood. He’s really not down for the struggle, but his wife is. So don’t expect the race industry to go away. Southern Christian Leadership Conference — you may not know this, because it wasn’t reported in the Drive-By Media — the racism, the sexism, the bigotry that we’re all charged with, just so you across the United States of America know, and you’ll see demonstrated here as the afternoon goes on, doesn’t exist on our side. We want everybody to succeed.

You know why? We want the country to succeed, and for the country to succeed, its people — its individuals — must succeed. Everyone among us must be pursuing his ambition or her desire, whatever, with excellence. Trying to be the best they can be.

Conservatives are naturally happy. We seek happiness. We pursue it. It’s part of who we are. So what can you do? Live your life. I swear, folks, you do not know in just the everyday life that you live in your homes, your neighborhoods, the favorite word of this administration, your "communities." Remember the root word there is "commune." Be happy, live your life according to your values and principles. Know you’re going to fail, no human being is perfect, you’re going to make mistakes, but live your life — you’ll be stunned at how many people you impress. Don’t be afraid to tell children that they’re wrong. They don’t know what you do. They simply haven’t lived long enough. It’s not their fault, but they’re being fed a bunch of garbage in school and don’t be afraid to tell them that they’re wrong.

So as you leave here, as you leave here optimism, confidence, not guilt, it’s not worth it. There’s nothing to be guilty about. Don’t treat people as children. Respect their intelligence. Realize that there’s a way to persuade people. Sometimes the worst way is to get in their face and point a finger. Set up a set of circumstances where the conclusion is obvious. Let them think they came up with the idea themselves. They’ll think they’re smart that they figured it out. Who cares how you persuade them, the fact they can be persuaded is factually correct, it’s possible. But the main thing to do here is stop thinking that we are a minority. Stop thinking that it is being in the minority that liberates you. It is your beliefs. It is your core principles, it is your confidence that liberates you. It’s not being in the minority.

In fact, for those of you watching my first national address and still hanging in there, we really are not that happy about being a minority and we’re out to change it.

Jeff Bezos Reclaims Title Of World’s Richest Man

Jeff Bezos Reclaims Title Of World’s Richest Man

With shares of Tesla sputtering over the last couple of weeks – made even more interesting by strange put buys coming into the name over the last 2 weeks – Elon Musk has slipped out of the pole position for the title of world’s richest man.

Bezos, who was temporarily dethroned from the position last month after holding the title for more than three years, has reclaimed his spot at the top of the list with his net worth at $191.2 billion. Musk has slipped to second with a net worth of $190.2 billion.

Bill Gates, Bernard Arnault and Mark Zuckerberg make up the three hole, four hole and five hole, respectively.

Musk’s stint at the top lasted about six weeks, until Tesla’s recent pullback from over $850 to the high $700 range, which came after Musk’s decision to put $1.5 billion worth of Bitcoin on the company’s balance sheet. He also interjected himself in the middle of the GameStop fiasco and has commented online about companies like Etsy and Signal.

In fact, Musk has been doing so much Tweeting, it begs the question of what he actually spends his day doing. But that’s another story for another day.

Bezos has recouped his title despite announcing this month that he is going to be stepping down as CEO of Amazon and into a Chairman position. He is currently also involved in his own space exploration company, called Blue Origin, and the Washington Post. Amazon is up 53% in the last 12 months.

Musk could wind up passing Bezos again quickly. Musk’s SpaceX is looking to raise money at a "significantly higher" valuation than its last round.

But come on, Elon. Why put in all that pesky work to pass Bezos? What does it take to get someone to come in and buy a couple million bucks worth of OTM calls for a friend to prop you back up on top?

Arizona Sheriff Sees Fivefold Increase in Illegal Border Crossings

Arizona Sheriff Sees Fivefold Increase in Illegal Border Crossings

Authored by Charlotte Cuthbertson via The Epoch Times,

High-speed vehicle pursuits of suspected human smugglers and other illegal immigrant-related crimes are becoming more common in Cochise County, Arizona, according to Sheriff Mark Dannels.

Dannels tracks illegal border crossings through his extensive hidden trail camera operation along his county’s 83 miles of shared border with Mexico.

The cameras showed 1,200 illegal entries in August 2020, and by December, it had more than doubled to 2,500, he said. Before August, 500 was a busy month.

“That’s what scares me about this whole thing,” he told The Epoch Times on Feb. 15.

“Though I believe politics has no business in policing, it sure has an effect on the border.”

President Joe Biden has undone several border security measures that the Trump administration had put into effect, including temporarily suspending deportations of illegal aliens, reversing President Donald Trump’s ban on travel from terror-prone countries, halting border wall construction, and issuing a sweeping immigration package to Congress that includes amnesty for millions of illegal immigrants.

Biden has also pledged to bring in 25,000 asylum-seekers who are waiting in Mexico for their immigration case to be adjudicated under the Migrant Protection Protocols (MPP) program.

“The president’s view is that the approach of the prior administration was immoral, but also ineffective in terms of addressing the challenge—the many challenges of an outdated immigration system,” said White House press secretary Jen Psaki on Feb. 16.

However, Dannels says the “best border efforts we’ve ever had in the last three decades in Cochise County was over the last couple of years.”

“We had a president that was very tough on the border, nobody would question that. And now we’ve got a president who’s going to do just the opposite,” he said.

“Are they rescinding them [executive orders] because it was Trump who was the author of it and it’s revengeful? Or are they rescinding it because it wasn’t working? I would question both those thoughts.”

Dannels said he’s concerned that border sheriffs are going to be sidelined during the Biden administration. He sits on the Homeland Security Advisory Council and was part of the Biden transition team for border issues. He was optimistic after the initial meeting about collaboration and other issues.

But he said he hasn’t been included in conversations about the impact of ending the MPP program, which he sees as one of the most effective policies.

On Feb. 19, the Department of Homeland Security will start to bring in 25,000 illegal immigrants who are part of the program.

“We’re going into Mexico during a health pandemic and bringing 25,000 over. It doesn’t make sense. It’s hypocritical,” Dannels said.

“Either we’re in the middle of a health pandemic, or we’re not. Somebody in Washington, D.C., needs to make that decision.”

The message smugglers and cartels are receiving is that the border is “open for business,” and “that’s what’s scary to me,” Dannels said. Just last month, two illegal immigrants died when the vehicle they were in flipped as they tried to evade law enforcement. Another four people were in the vehicle.

“We need to have a secure border. The cartels are the only ones smiling right now, because they will benefit from this confusion,” he said.

He hopes the new administration’s measures won’t hamper the collaboration with local Border Patrol agents in Cochise County.

“We’re going to keep doing what’s right, what the oath of office has us to do—and that’s to protect our citizens,” he said.

But with the new policies, he said he’s “not optimistic” that a border crisis won’t emerge of similar proportions to what occurred in 2019. Almost 1 million illegal or inadmissible immigrants were apprehended by border agents along the southern border during fiscal 2019.

“We’re going to have our hands full [this year],” Dannels predicts.

“We’ve been down this road before. For 37 years, I’ve worked this southern border, and I’ve seen the different leadership come into Washington, D.C. They bring their own ideologies, their own policies, and unfortunately politics becomes the driving force of this.

“And what happens is, the local communities are the ones that take the impact.”
