Pranksters troll California’s ‘sanctuary state’ declaration: ‘Felons, Illegals and MS13 Welcome!’

California officially became a “sanctuary state” on Monday — and opponents of the new declaration were there to troll the Golden State’s government.

What happened?

Signs mocking the declaration appeared on “Welcome to California” highway signs on Monday. According to Fox News, motorists entering from Nevada and Arizona were greeted with the official-looking signs. They read:

OFFICIAL SANCTUARY STATE
Felons, Illegals and MS13 Welcome!
Democrats Need The Votes!

It isn’t clear who posted the signs or if they have been removed.

The signs are similar to one posted on the Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu last year, according to the Los Angeles Times. That sign read: “Official Sanctuary City ‘Cheap Nannies and Gardeners Make Malibu Great!’ (Boyle Heights Not So Much).”

That sign was posted after Malibu declared itself a sanctuary city.

What did California do?

California officially became a “sanctuary state” on Jan. 1, because of a bill that California Gov. Jerry Brown (D) signed into law in October.

The law, similar to many “sanctuary city” laws, bars California law enforcement from asking people about their immigration status or working with federal immigration authorities, such as Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

In effect, the law shields California’s estimated 2.3 million undocumented immigrants from federal immigration laws.

Brown said in October that the law will “strike a balance” between protecting the public and protecting undocumented immigrants.

“These are uncertain times for undocumented Californians and their families, and this bill strikes a balance that will protect public safety, while bringing a measure of comfort to those families who are now living in fear everyday,” he said, according to Fox News.

Meanwhile, U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions denounced the law: “The bill risks the safety of good law enforcement officers and the safety of the neighborhoods that need their protection the most.”

Trump Shames Obama In Iran Protest Tweetstorm

Since the protests against the Iranian government first started making headlines, President Trump has been cheering on the protesters and calling for the end of the “brutal and corrupt” tyrannical regime. He’s also calling out former President Obama for “foolishly” making a deal that’s handed millions to the leading state sponsor of terrorism.

Trump first posted a message about the reports of the protests in Iran on Friday. Since, he’s tweeted a half-dozen Iran-related posts, some directly and indirectly calling out the Obama administration.

“Big protests in Iran,” Trump wrote Sunday. “The people are finally getting wise as to how their money and wealth is being stolen and squandered on terrorism. Looks like they will not take it any longer. The USA is watching very closely for human rights violations!”

Trump followed up that tweet by again hammering the issue of Iran directing some of the money it received from the Obama administration-led nuclear deal to terrorist organizations by highlighting the regime’s status as the world’s biggest state funder of terrorism.

“Iran, the Number One State of Sponsored Terror with numerous violations of Human Rights occurring on an hourly basis, has now closed down the Internet so that peaceful demonstrators cannot communicate. Not good!” Trump tweeted.

On New Years, Trump noted that Obama’s deal with Iran had clearly failed to bring about the stability his administration had promised.

“Iran is failing at every level despite the terrible deal made with them by the Obama Administration,” wrote Trump. “The great Iranian people have been repressed for many years. They are hungry for food & for freedom. Along with human rights, the wealth of Iran is being looted. TIME FOR CHANGE!”

The president issued another tweet on Tuesday, again specifically calling out Obama for “foolishly” giving the “brutal and corrupt” Iranian regime money they could use to fund their terror campaigns.

“The people of Iran are finally acting against the brutal and corrupt Iranian regime,” he wrote. “All of the money that President Obama so foolishly gave them went into terrorism and into their ‘pockets.’ The people have little food, big inflation and no human rights. The U.S. is watching!”

Here are all of Trump’s posts in order:

Too bad to check: Did Obama admin rat out Israeli attempt to bump off Quds Force leader?

Qassem Soleimani won’t slip through the Mossad’s fingers again if Kuwaiti newspaper al-Jarida is correct — if he ever did in the first place, which is questionable. According to its sources, a dispute between the US and Israel over the latter’s policy of aggressively targeting Iranian terror operations has been resolved. That means that the commander of the Quds Force will find himself targeted once again:

US intelligence agencies have given Israel the green light to assassinate the senior Iranian responsible for coordinating military activity on behalf of the Islamic Republic in Lebanon, Syria and Iraq, according to the Kuwaiti newspaper al-Jarida.

For the past 20 years or so, Qassem Soleimani has commanded the Quds Force — the branch of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards responsible for military and clandestine operations outside of the Islamic Republic. …

Three years ago, Israel came close to assassinating Soleimani near Damascus, al-Jarida quoted unnamed source as saying, but the Americans tipped off the Iranians against the background of intense disagreement between Washington and Jerusalem.

That was during the Obama administration, which, according to reports at the time, was so focused on securing the 2015 Iran nuclear accord that it chose to overlook and even obstruct efforts to clamp down on Iranian-backed terror organizations.

Just how believable is this report? The first rule of Assassination Club is that you don’t talk about Assassination Club. The second rule of Assassination Club is … well, you get the point. The Times of Israel points out that al-Jarida isn’t exactly known for sober reporting, especially when it comes to Israel, although Ha’aretz gives them more credit.  Still, it’s tough to imagine that a Kuwaiti newspaper would scoop either Israeli or US papers on something this momentous. It’s also difficult to envision why anyone in a position to target Soleimani would talk about it, especially to a Kuwaiti newspaper.

This narrative seems to be attractive because of its underlying element — that the Obama administration intervened to protect Soleimani as part of its efforts to secure the nuclear deal with Iran’s mullahs. Perhaps that might be the case, but it’s tough to see what the US had to gain by protecting Soleimani from Israel, and what Israel would have had to gain by informing the US of that operation in the first place. This supposedly took place in 2014, but the Israelis knew full well by that time that the Obama administration had calculated its foreign policy towards bargaining with the mullahs. Israel would not have needed Obama’s approval for an operation targeting Soleimani any more than they would need Trump’s permission now — and given that Obama was clearly sympathetic in 2014 toward Iran, they wouldn’t have had much incentive to give Obama a heads-up on such an operation either.

Let’s look at it from the other direction. Why would a Kuwaiti newspaper make these claims if they weren’t well sourced? Soleimani has been a key part of Iran’s attempts to create a Shi’ite bridge across Sunni territory from Iran to the Mediterranean, with Syria being a major part of that strategy. That strategy threatens the other Sunni nations on the Arabian peninsula, including Kuwait. Soleimani is a self-promoter, as Michael Rubin wrote last October, which makes him both a public and convenient target. Leaders in Sunni nations would have plenty of reason to highlight Soleimani in hopes of painting a bulls-eye on his back.

It’s certainly possible that the Obama administration snitched on the Israelis to curry favor with the Iranians and blew their Soleimani operation. We’d need more corroboration than a single story coming from al-Jarida to buy it, though, and there are plenty of reasons to be skeptical. Soleimani doesn’t seem too worried about showing his face in public but has to know that he’s a target, and not just of the Israelis and/or Americans, either.

4 Biggest Second Amendment Fights on 2018 Horizon

4 Biggest Second Amendment Fights on 2018 Horizon

With 2018 underway Breitbart News thought it wise to point out four Second Amendment fights that the House and Senate need to address sooner rather than later.

Some of these fights are issues that were undertaken but not secured in 2017, things like national reciprocity and the Hearing Protection Act. Others are things that came up and need to be defeated. These would include things like the backdoor push for bump stock gun control.

The bottom line—there are things to be done in defense of the Second Amendment now.

National Reciprocity—National reciprocity for concealed carry passed the House on December 6, 2017. It was introduced by Rep. Richard Hudson (R-NC) on January 3, 2017, then sat idly until conservatives were able to overcome Speaker Paul Ryan’s (R-WI) stonewalling. Now it has gone to the Senate, where it sat idly throughout December, as Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) busied himself with other things. National reciprocity must be the number one priority in 2018 for supporters of the Second Amendment, as it will fix the cumbersome patchwork of laws that concealed carry permit holders currently face as they travel.

Repeal of Gun Ban for Military Veterans—On March 16, 2017, the House voted to repeal the gun ban for military veterans. The ban is structured in a manner similar to Barack Obama’s Social Security gun ban inasmuch as it allows bureaucrats to flag military disability recipients who require help with their finances. Those flagged recipients are then turned over to the National Instance Criminal Background Check System (NICS) and barred from purchasing firearms for self-defense. Although the House voted to repeal the ban, Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and his colleagues never took up the measure for a vote.

Hearing Protection Act—The Hearing Protection Act was introduced in the House on January 9, 2017. The measure is designed to remove suppressors from the purview of the National Firearms Act (1934). Contrary to the left’s scare tactics, the Hearing Protection Act is not about making suppressors legal, as they are already legal in over 40 states. Rather, the Hearing Protection Act would simply make the devices less difficult for law-abiding citizens to acquire. The Act would accomplish this by removing the requirements that suppressor purchasers submit fingerprints and photographs of themselves, and would also remove the registration requirement and $200 federal tax for suppressor owners. The Hearing Protection Act was days away from a vote on House floor in early October but Speaker Ryan shelved the bill, providing no insight into when he might allow the measure to come up for a vote.

Defeat of Elitist Push for Bump Stock Ban—Elitists within Congress and without have been pushing a ban on the firearm accessories known as “bump stocks” ever since they were criminally used by the Las Vegas attacker. In other words, one criminal misused the accessories on October 1, and Senators and House members who admitted to not even knowing what bump stocks were piled on for more gun control. The Senators who voiced support for legislation or bump stock hearings included John Cornyn (R-TX), Jeff Flake (R-AZ), and Charles Grassley (R-IA). House members supporting action against bump stocks include Reps. Bill Flores (R-TX), Kevin Yoder (R-KS), Mark Meadows (R-NC), and Carlos Curbelo (R-FL). The DOJ is now quietly doing the biding of elitists in Congress and without by pushing to redefine terms in the National Firearms Act (1934), so as to allow bump stocks to be reclassified and banned. Gun Owners of America vows to fight tooth and nail against a bump stock ban.

NY Times Laments Iranian Protesters Are Ignoring Government’s ‘Call for Calm’

As Iran continued to crack down on citizens protesting its hardline Islamic government, the New York Times tweeted Monday that authorities “clamped down” because demonstrators were ignoring “calls for calm.”

The tweet borrowed language from the lede of a Monday Times piece, which the tweet linked to, headlined “Deadly Iran Protests Prompt Warning of Harsher Response.”

“Ignoring pleas for calm from President Hassan Rouhani, Iranian protesters took to the streets in several cities for the fifth day on Monday as pent-up economic and political frustrations boiled over in the broadest display of discontent in years,” the Times reported.

The tweet was widely-shared by detractors, who pointed out that it seemed to pin blame for the hundreds of arrests and dozens of deaths on the protesters rather than government security forces.

CURL: With Iran Aflame, Feminists Remain Silent, Former Obama Aides Urge Trump To ‘Be Quiet’

As the biggest protest since the 2009 Green Revolution rages on in Iran, American feminists have been AWOL. And one-time aides to former president Barack Obama say President Trump shouldn’t say a word, either.

Since the protest broke out last month, we’ve heard not a peep from the women who gathered for the anti-Trump #womensmarch, who wore “pussy hats” to protest the so-called sexist president. Not even after an Iranian woman who bravely waved her hijab in Tehran was reportedly detained. With her required head cover tied to a stick like a battle flag, the unknown woman stood at a busy intersection and waved the cloth in front of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard.

She’s now the face of the new uprising — yet no one knows where she is. Disappeared.

In a bizarre twist, critics of President Trump and former aides to Barack Obama — who handed billions to the despotic rulers in Iran and allowed then to continue work developing nuclear weapons — are urging Trump to remain quiet (they aren’t president, he is!). Trump isn’t — quite the contrary — but they insist.

On Sunday, Obama’s former national security adviser Susan Rice tweeted out a New York Times op-ed by another former Obama aide, Philip Gordon, who was an assistant Secretary of State, headlined “How Can Trump Help Iran’s Protesters? Be Quiet.”

She offered no support to the protesters sick and tired of Iran’s iron fist rule, just an edict to the sitting president to “be quiet.” What an ego!

And Obama’s former Secretary of State John Kerry, the milquetoast who took over after Hillary Clinton, said Sunday on Twitter: “With humility about how little we know about what’s happening inside Iran, this much is clear: it’s an Iranian moment and not anyone else’s.”

The talking point had clearly been passed around on Sunday, because Ben Rhodes, a deputy under Rice, said: “… it seems lost on too many that this is about what Iranians want for Iran, and not about us.”

For her part, Clinton on Sunday said “I hope their government responds peacefully and supports their hopes.” Ah, there’s that “hope” for “change” again.

Feminists, meanwhile, are doing even less for their sisters in Iran. The National Organization of Women (NOW) wasn’t talking about the crackdown in women in Iran, but rather moaning about Trump’s education secretary.

Not a word, either, from the Women’s Marchers. On Twitter, @womensmarch is instead hyping another gathering, this time in Las Vegas, for January 21 (warmer than D.C. and they can get some gambling in, to boot).

This isn’t lost on those who frequent Twitter.

With dozens dead and hundreds detained in Iran, you’d expect American feminists to get their sisters’ back — especially in such a repressive regime, where women can’t leave the house alone and must remain covered head to toe at all times. But not so — some American feminists actually argue that the hijab is empowering.

More, though, is the silence from the very top.

During the 2009 uprising, Obama turned tail and fled, even after Iranian freedom fighters begged for his help.

‘So now, at this pivotal point in time, it is up to the countries of the free world to make up their mind,” Iranian opposition leaders told the Obama administration in an eight-page memo. “Will they continue on the track of wishful thinking and push every decision to the future until it is too late, or will they reward the brave people of Iran and simultaneously advance the Western interests and world peace.”

Obama didn’t help and the uprising failed — hundreds or even thousands (no one knows) were killed as a result.

As 2018 begins, it’s the height of irony that feminists are silent and the players in the failed Iran policy of the past urge Trump to be quiet. Thankfully, Trump will do no such thing.

Well said, Mr. President.

Don’t tell anybody, but accidental shooting deaths are way down

We already knew that violent crime was down across most of the nation (with the awful exception of some cities like Baltimore). But there’s another factor in the federal statistics which hasn’t received nearly as much attention. Accidental shooting deaths are down. And I mean… way down. While the cause for this is being debated along ideological lines, the LA Times reports that the numbers are nothing but good news, not that you’re hearing about it on the major news networks.

Gun violence has received no shortage of attention. But one bright spot has gotten much less: the number of accidental shooting deaths has steadily declined.

There were 489 people killed in unintentional shootings in the U.S. in 2015, the most recent year for which data is available. That was down from 824 deaths in 1999, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Taking into account population growth over that time, the rate fell 48%.

Experts attribute the decline to a mix of gun safety education programs, state laws regulating gun storage in homes and a drop in the number of households that have guns. While the improvement occurred in every state, those with the most guns and the fewest laws continue to have the most accidental shooting deaths.

We’re talking about the period between 1999 and 2015. So basically, in a roughly fifteen-year span, the number of accidental shooting deaths has been cut in half. Do we really need to bother with arguing over why when you see that sort of a headline? Well… yes, for two reasons. One is so that we can replicate the success across the board using the same methods. Sadly, the other is to make sure that people aren’t incorrectly claiming victory as an excuse to push their agenda. But what was the real cause here?

Gun control advocates will want to take the same tone as that LA Times article and attribute the drop to stricter gun storage laws and fewer guns in homes (at least in some states). Second Amendment advocates will cite increased education on gun safety. There are some dire suggestions in the article about the NRA, saying that they “didn’t want to comment” on the story, but that’s a rather questionable angle to take. The NRA sponsors some of the most wide-reaching gun safety programs in the country and focuses public attention on such educational objectives constantly.

Of course, the real answer may be a little bit of both. Greater awareness and improved education are vital and certainly played a role here. But it’s also possible that some people just can’t take a hint and needed a new law forcing them to store their weapons safely when children are around. Unfortunately, such laws do little or nothing for homes without children and frequently render a firearm purchased for home protection purposes effectively useless in an emergency. That’s why common sense should play more of a role in such decisions, though that’s a commodity in short supply all too often.

It’s also worth noting, as the LA Time article manages to admit, that accidental shootings account for only the smallest fraction of deaths involving firearms, at 1.3%. That’s probably not much lower than instances of law-abiding gun owners who follow all of the applicable rules going out and shooting someone. If we really want to make an impact on the total number of firearms related deaths in the country, progress must be made on the mental health front to cut back on the number of suicides, which account for the vast majority. Also, getting violent criminal offenders off the streets would reduce the second largest cause of shootings.

$1.6 Billion in Unemployment Insurance Benefits Paid to Individuals Who Did Not Seek Work

More than $1.6 billion in unemployment insurance benefits was paid to individuals who did not seek work in fiscal year 2016, according to an audit from the Government Accountability Office.

Unemployment insurance is paid to individuals if they lose employment with the general requirement that they actively search for work. For some states, this active search may require a minimum number of contacts a beneficiary must have with potential employers, submission of job applications, creating a LinkedIn account, going to a networking event, or visiting a job center.

The audit was conducted to see whether or not unemployment insurance beneficiaries who did not actively search for work affected the program’s level of improper payments. In fiscal year 2016, the Department of Labor’s unemployment insurance program was the seventh-highest for improper payments among all federal programs. The biggest cause was beneficiaries not meeting work requirements.

According to the report, while the federal law requires that there needs to be a work search requirement in order to receive benefits, states can determine what those activities are, and they can be vary from state to state.

"Some states have formal warning policies that allow UI claimants to receive benefits after the first discovered occurrence of their failing to meet work search requirements while other states do not have such policies," the report states. "As a result, states are inconsistent in whether they report such benefit payments as overpayments, which could have an impact on DOL’s reported improper payment rate."

The report explains that the District of Columbia and 18 states have these types of warnings and do not count benefits paid to individuals who did not search for work as overpayments.

"According to Department of Labor’s estimates, over $1.6 billion in benefit payments were made to claimants for weeks for which they were issued formal warnings in fiscal year 2016," the report states. "DOL’s analysis further shows that if formal warning cases had been included in DOL’s calculation of the overpayment rates for fiscal year 2016, the nationwide overpayment rate would have increased by about 5 percentage points, from an estimated 11.1 percent to an estimated 16.3 percent."

The Labor Department requires the improper payment rate be less than 10 percent for states, and if they exceed that they need to submit a corrective action plan to the agency.

According to the audit, the agency can provide guidance to help correct the problem.

"In preparing guidance for states, DOL has an opportunity to determine and communicate how state policies on work search requirements and their related overpayment reporting should align with federal requirements and reporting expectations," the GAO said. "Providing specific information on any actions required and, if actions are required, setting timeframes for completion and monitoring states’ responses to the guidance could help ensure that DOL achieves its desired results."

Rosemary Lahasky, deputy assistant secretary at the Labor Department, said the agency concurs with GAO’s description of the current state of play regarding state formal warning policies and is in the process of finalizing guidance about work search requirements.

The Employment and Training Administration "is developing guidance to states on the use of work search formal warning policies when it is determined that a claimant failed to meet the state’s work search requirements," Lahasky said. "The guidance will be finalized and released to the state [unemployment insurance] agencies once this OMB review has been completed."

Keep tweeting, Mr. President, but here’s how you should do it differently in 2018

Keep tweeting, Mr. President,
You know President Trump has hit on something effective when the media are constantly telling him to stop it, and nothing has exemplified this more than his use of Twitter. Ever since the campaign, the punditry and the political class has insisted that someone needs to take his phone away from him or else there will be disaster. Maybe there are some on his staff who agree, but no one appears to have the chops to actually do it, and the president keeps on tweeting.

Iran protests: Ayatollah blames ‘enemies’ for anti-government protests; nine more killed overnight

Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, blamed the “enemies of Iran” for his nation’s current unrest that left another nine people dead overnight, bringing the death toll to at least 21 since anti-government protests began last week, according to Reuters.

What did Khamenei say?

“In recent days, enemies of Iran used different tools, including cash, weapons, politics, and intelligence apparatus to create troubles for the Islamic Republic,” Khamenei said in his first reaction since the protests began six days ago, according to Al Jazeera.

“The dignity, security, and progress of the Iranian nation is owed to the self-sacrifice of the martyrs. What prevents enemies from exerting their atrocities is the spirit of courage, sacrifice, and faith within the nation,” he said in a statement. “I have something to say on these events, and I will speak to the dear people when the time is right.”

While Khamenei did not mention any enemies by name, the Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council Ali Shamkhani blamed the U.S., Britain, and Saudi Arabia for the riots in Iran.

“Saudis will receive Iran’s unexpected response, and they know how serious it can be,” Shamkhani said in an interview with Beirut-based Al Mayadeen TV, Al Jazeera reported.

Iranian Interior Minister Hossein Zolfaghari said Tuesday, according to UPI, that security forces “decisively countered the saboteurs.”

“In most parts of the country, the situation is now normal, and the unrest that took place in certain areas will soon end with the people’s cooperation and the efforts of security forces,” Zolfaghari said.

What happened overnight?

Six people died during an assault Monday night on a police station in Isfahan’s central town, Qahdarijan, when they attacked a police station, Al Jazeera reported. Rioters were believed to be attempting to steal weapons. Three others, including an 11-year-old boy, were killed in Khomeinishahr.

And for the first time since the demonstrations unfolded six days ago, according to UPI, a member of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard died during a clash with protestors.

Have there been any arrests?

Security forces have arrested more than 450 protesters in Tehran, who, according to the head of Tehran’s Revolutionary Court, could potentially face the death penalty if the charges include “Moharebeh,” or waging war against God, Politico reported.

President Hassan Rouhani warned that the government would not hesitate to crack down on protesters. He said the rallies so far have been illegal under Iranian law since the government didn’t grant prior permission.

It’s not clear how many arrests have been made in other parts of the country.

What led to the civil unrest?

The massive demonstrations began in Mashhad over government corruption, a weak economy, a jump in food prices, and the treatment of women in the Islamic Republic.

In recent days, President Donald Trump tweeted support for the Iranian people who are standing up against the leaders of Iran.

“The people of Iran are finally acting against the brutal and corrupt Iranian regime. All of the money that President [Barack] Obama so foolishly gave them went into terrorism and into their ‘pockets.’ The people have little food, big inflation and no human rights. The U.S. is watching!” Trump tweeted early Tuesday.

What else?

The Iranian government is limiting access to the internet and social media apps including Telegram and Instagram, which protesters used to organize demonstrations, according to UPI.
