Sad. One of America’s oldest firearms manufacturers files for Chapter 11

Leah Barkoukis at Townhall brings us the sad but predicted news that Remington Outdoor Company (better known to most of you shooters as Remington Arms) has filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. A variety of challenges have been bringing down the company’s bottom line for a while now and this move was likely seen as the only way to keep them solvent. They do not anticipate closing and should remain in business through the transition, but control of Remington will pass to its creditors.

Remington Outdoor Company, which is one of the oldest gun manufacturers in the United States, has filed for bankruptcy protection.

The move was reportedly to occur last month but the filing was delayed after the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School on February 14, which killed 17 people.

According to The Wall Street Journal, a number of factors have contributed to the Chapter 11 filing, including falling sales, a heavy debt load, and lawsuits from the Sandy Hook school shooting.

Remington probably could have survived any of those challenges individually, but the combination of factors was too much for them. The ironic effect of having a pro-Second Amendment president in office is that people aren’t so worried about having their firearms seized, so they won’t be in as much of a rush to run out and purchase new weapons. Adding to that challenge was the continued legal fees and other drains associated with the endless parade of nuisance lawsuits coming from the Sandy Hook groups following the mass shooting in Connecticut. While the company has prevailed in each instance thus far, the legal fees have surely been adding up over the years and there’s been no move to force the groups suing them to pay for those costs.

Seeing Remington fall on such hard times is particularly tough for me. As I’m sure I’ve mentioned here over the years, I grew up barely five miles from the main, original plant in upstate New York and used to ride my bike past there regularly when the weather was good. They were the biggest employer in Ilion, New York for ages and everyone either had a family member who worked there or was friends with one. It was really the heart of the community. They began moving both their headquarters and many jobs to the south years ago because of the horrible business conditions in New York and the lack of respect for the Second Amendment demonstrated by the state government, but they always remained close to the community.

The first gun I ever received, back when I was just finishing elementary school, was a Remington Arms bolt-action .22 caliber rifle. It had belonged to my Uncle and my dad had a 3x scope fitted on it for me. I used to shoot woodchucks that would get into my grandfather’s farm fields and he’d give all the grandkids a quarter if you brought in a woodchuck. (My brother and I quickly realized that you could bring him a woodchuck you shot miles away and still get the quarter. I’m pretty sure Gramps knew what we were up to, but he paid us anyway.)

The point is, while it was an internationally recognized brand in firearms manufacturing, Remington Arms was always more of a family affair for those who grew up in the shadow of that factory. Even if they continue on under the same name but with different ownership, it’s really never going to be the same name and brand that we grew up with. A sad day, to be sure.

“BIG WIN JUDGEMENT”: Kim Dotcom Triumphs In Major Legal Battle As U.S. Extradition Fight Drags On

“BIG WIN JUDGEMENT”: Kim Dotcom Triumphs In Major Legal Battle As U.S. Extradition Fight Drags On

Megaupload founder Kim Dotcom has won a major legal battle against New Zealand as the fight to extradite him to the U.S. drags on.

Reuters reports:

The Human Rights Review Tribunal’s decision might be relevant for his high-profile U.S. extradition case, which is with the Court of Appeal. Dotcom says the information he requested in July 2015 and denied one month later could be presented as evidence in that case.

German-born Dotcom faces extradition to the United States relating to his Megaupload site, which was shut down in 2012 following an FBI-ordered raid on his Auckland mansion.

U.S. authorities say Dotcom and three co-accused Megaupload executives cost film studios and record companies more than $500 million and generated more than $175 million by encouraging paying users to store and share copyrighted material.

Dotcom hailed the decision on Twitter.

“Big Win JUDGEMENT: Attorney General of New Zealand broke the law by withholding information I’m legally entitled to. The Government & Ministers are ordered to comply with my requests and provide all documents. Damages for loss of benefit and loss of dignity are rewarded to me.”

“Former NZ Attorney General Chris Finlayson is a serial law breaker. His security clearance should be revoked and he should be removed from New Zealand’s Intelligence and Security committee. Mini Napoleon is a reason why the NZ Govt and GCSB got embarrassed in this Dotcom fiasco.”

The Intercept‘s Glenn Greenwald weighed in on the ruling.

“A New Zealand court ruled yesterday in favor of @KimDotcom in his suit against the New Zealand Government for its refusal to provide him the information it had about him under the Privacy Act. The court awarded Dotcom $ NZD 90,000 (US$ 65,500). Whatever you think of @KimDotcom politically, or the US’s endless attempt to extradite him to a country to which he has no connection, there is no question his rights have been repeatedly violated by the US & NZ Govts – including illegally spying on him.”

Parkland Anti-Gun Activist’s Next Crusade: Opposing Voter Identification Laws

Most schools require student ID. He also wants to tighten up background checks. And he thinks that voter ID oppresses black people, a typical racist thought.

Via Daily Wire:

The March for Our Lives may have been the Parkland activist students’ magnum opus, but they are by no means done agitating for leftist policies. The only relevant legislation on the horizon, the STOP School Violence Act, passed without their support, and there are few gun regulations likely to pass.

So, at least one Parkland student is seeking to expand his policy agenda; David Hogg is battling voter ID laws.

That’s right: he may believe you should have photo identification in order to exercise your Second Amendment rights, but is iffy on whether you should have similar paperwork to cast a ballot.[…]

Contrary to the stated purpose of Saturday’s March for Our Lives — “preventing gun violence” — the objective appears to be the widespread promotion of a severely leftist agenda, and not just on guns.

Trump’s Tough Talk On China Works: China’s Premier Pledges Opening Market To Avert Trade War

Trump’s Tough Talk On China Works: China’s Premier Pledges Opening Market To Avert Trade War

China’s Premier Li Keqiang gestures as he speaks during a news conference, after the closing ceremony of the Chinese National People’s Congress (NPC) at the Great Hall of the People, in Beijing, March 13, 2014. REUTERS/Barry Huang (CHINA – Tags: POLITICS)

As reported previously by TGP:

President Trump just announced a new series of tariffs on roughly $50 billion in Chinese imports. These new tariffs are the result of a seven-month investigation into China’s continued theft of US intellectual property. “We have a tremendous intellectual property theft problem. It’s going to make us a much stronger, much richer nation,” President Trump told reporters this morning. “This has been long in the making.”

While President Trump is imposing the harsh tariffs to help correct the current trade imbalance, he remained open and confident with US-Chinese relations calling China a “friend” to the use and stating he had “tremendous respect” President Xi Jinping.

Today, Chinese Premier Li Keqiang said that Bejing is now pushing for talks to correct Chinese-US trade imbalances, rather than a trade war which he believes will hurt both countries. Speaking at a press conference Mr. Li stated, “With regard to trade imbalances, China and the United States should adopt a pragmatic and rational attitude, promote balancing through expansion of trade, and stick to negotiations to resolve differences and friction.”

Premier Li pledged to make access for American business easier in China and that, going forward, China will treat foreign and domestic companies equally, without pushing US-firms to transfer intellectual property rights as it has done before. The theft of intellectual property and US-developed technologies has long-since been a point of contention for the US.

Via NewsMax:

The United States asked China in a letter last week to cut a tariff on U.S. autos, buy more U.S.-made semiconductors and give U.S. firms greater access to the Chinese financial sector, the Wall Street Journal reported on Monday, citing unidentified sources.

Alarm over a possible trade war between the world’s two largest economies has chilled financial markets as investors anticipated dire consequences should trade barriers go up due to President Donald Trump’s bid to cut the U.S. deficit with China.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer listed steps they want China to take in a letter to Liu He, a newly appointed vice premier who oversees China’s economy, the Journal said, quoting sources with knowledge of the matter.

The newspaper reported that Mnuchin was considering a visit to Beijing to pursue negotiations.

Despite a steady stream of fierce rhetoric from Chinese state media lambasting the United States for being a “bully” and warning of retaliation, Chinese and U.S. officials are busy negotiating behind the scenes.

America doesn’t have a gun violence epidemic. Democrat cities do.

Guns and gun crime are the new climate change: those who know nothing about the subject are suddenly “experts.”

I call this faux expertise Albert Gore-itis, and I discuss it at length in my upcoming first book, 10 Warning Signs Your Child is Becoming a Democrat.

College pottery majors and donkey cheese-eating, Che Guevera T-shirt-wearing trust fund babies fancy themselves firearms gurus (FYI, donkey cheese is the world’s most expensive).  That doesn’t really bother me as much as the lying-by-withholding that the DMIC (Democrat Media Industrial Complex) and Redcoat gun-grabbing organizations (funded by millionaires and billionaires, such as former New York mayor Michael Bloomberg) engage in when discussing guns and gun crime.

Democrat policies kill

America does not have a gun crime epidemic.  There are, however, epidemics in many locales and cities.  Who do you think runs the vast majority of those cities?

NRA-funded Republicans?

No.

Lobbyists for firearm manufacturers?

No.

The vast majority of those cities have been run by Democrats for decades upon decades.

Here are the top 20 cities with the highest gun murder rates in the U.S. per capita.  Of these, every city except the last one, Tulsa, has a Democrat majority in the mayoralty and City Council or Board of Aldermen.

Here are the non-fatal shootings top 20 per capita.  Notice the overlap of several cities; the cities on the non-fatal list absent on the murder list are also Democrat-run cities, except for the last one, Jacksonville.

Here’s a sampling of five longtime Democrat empires (all days are consecutive and uninterrupted).  All appear in the top 20 lists:

1. St. Louis: only Democrat mayors; 90% Democrat City Council; 15,000 days.

2. Baltimore: only Democrat mayors and only Democrat City Council; 18,000 days.

3. Philadelphia: only Democrat mayors; 90% Democrat City Council; 20,000 days.

4. Detroit: only Democrat mayors; 90% Democrat City Council; 22,000 days.

5. Chicago: only Democrat mayors; 90% Democrat City Council; 30,000 days.

The Democrats have ruled Chicago for longer than Stalin ruled the USSR, the Castros in Cuba, and the Kims in North Korea, and for longer than slavery was legal in the U.S.

Exhausted yet?  There’s more.

These are America’s top 10 most violent cities, according to FBI data.  Violent crimes include homicides, gun violence, gangs, pedophilia, and robberies.

Every city is majority Democrat-controlled.  Several of the cities on the FBI’s list also appear on the aforementioned murder and non-fatal shootings lists.  Because the FBI’s ranking is per capita, several cities such as Chicago and Newark (only Democrat mayors; 90% City Council; 23,000 days) are absent.

Still with me?  St. Louis, Baltimore, Detroit, and New Orleans crack the top 50 for most dangerous cities on the planet.  New Orleans has elected only Democrat mayors for the last 55,000 consecutive days; the United States as a nation has existed for 88,000 days.  New Orleans’s city council is, in theory, nonpartisan; I’ll let you conclude how nonpartisan it is.

As a side note on Chicago: A report last year estimated that 60% of guns recovered in Chicago came from out of state, with 20% traced back to Indiana and others from Wisconsin.  Though difficult to determine from where exactly, in each state, the guns originated, I believe it’s reasonable to speculate that they came not from rural areas, but from the big cities, such as Indianapolis and Milwaukee (run, of course, by…drum roll…Democrats).  What, you thought Wisconsin and Indiana were red states?  Red states are dead; only blue and pur-blue exist.

Stats don’t lie; Democrats do

Democrats sell local gun crime epidemics as national gun crime epidemics. And listen: their sales pitch is effective.  I rarely hear Republicans, conservatives, or even the NRA effectively combat this pitch.  Data is mixed, depending on the study, but since the ’90s, gun violence and homicides nationally have declined.  But not in Democrat-controlled cities.

Also, Democrats always pad the stat sheet by mixing in gun-related deaths from suicide and suspects shot and killed by police officers.

The old saying “stats don’t lie; statisticians do” can be used in any ideological context.  But when it comes to the DMIC, Democrats and Redcoat gun-grabbers, one of two things is at work:

  1. They’re unaware that the epidemics are largely isolated in Democrat city monopolies, thereby making them dangerously ignorant.
  2. They are aware, thereby making them…well, just dangerous, just like the cities they rule over.

When it comes to the crème de la crème of cities with gun crime, Democrats control 95% – yes, 95% – of the top 20.  As one moves into the top 50 and 100 cities, the percentage dips, but not by much.

Our rights are under fire

Helping the Democrats’ cause is the fact that they are now overtly and in-your-face exploiting our youths as Redcoat gun control propaganda props.  The Democrats have pitted us against children and created creepy kid activists.  How do we win a battle challenging kids?  Answer: We don’t, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t talk about it all the time.  The Democrats are always on offense.  It’s not enough for us to match their intensity; we must exceed it.  Republicans and conservatives usually underestimate the Democrats and fail to understand their tactics.

The way Republicans and conservatives win this narrative war is by talking about the entire story, and one is not telling the entire story without hammering home over and over again the indisputable failures of Democrat gun and crime policies. While statements such as “we’re not Sweden” and “those countries don’t have a Second Amendment” are correct, they render the message incomplete.  Winning this narrative war will not be easy, but it can be done.

Chances are that those of you reading this don’t live in a city with mass gun crime.  Remove the data from municipal Democrat quasi-monarchies, and our gun crime rate is lower than Heaven’s.

If we could just convince Democrats and Tessio Republicans to self-deport, I suspect that our crime rates would significantly decrease in an evening or two.  One can only dream.

Obama: I Hope to Create ‘A Million Young Barack Obamas’

BY:

Former President Barack Obama said he hopes to create a “million young Barack Obamas” through his foundation’s work in developing progressive leaders.

Obama told an audience in Japan that the most important thing he could in his post-White House life would be to help develop the next generation of leaders, which is one of the main missions of his nonprofit Obama Foundation.

“After I left office, what I realized is that the Obama Foundation could potentially create a platform for young up-and-coming leaders … to come together, to meet together, create a digital platform where they could exchange information on an ongoing basis about projects they were working on, that if I could do that effectively, then I would create a hundred or a thousand or a million young Barack Obamas or Michelle Obamas, the next group of people who could take that baton in that relay race that is human progress and continue to build on the work that we have done,” Obama said.

Obama has largely stayed out of the political fray since leaving office, but he has campaigned for Democrats and tweeted in support of progressive causes, such as the March for Our Lives gun control rallies across the country on Saturday.

LITTLE HOGGS: #MarchForOurLives Student Protesters Leave Their Trash for Someone Else to Clean Up

LITTLE HOGGS: #MarchForOurLives Student Protesters Leave Their Trash for Someone Else to Clean Up

The Democrat funded March for our Lives protests were held Saturday in cities across the United States.

The largest gathering was in Washington DC where approximately 250,000 people turned out to protest gun laws.

The anti-gun protesters were also little Hoggs.

Retired Army Colonel Calls Out Gun-Grabbers — If You Say We’ve Got Blood on Our Hands Then It’s Safe To Say…

Retired Army Colonel Calls Out Gun-Grabbers — If You Say We’ve Got Blood on Our Hands Then It’s Safe To Say…

On a weekend where protests sparked by the Parkland school shooting crowded out almost every other media story, there was plenty of heated rhetoric going around on social media about the role guns should play in our society. Not all of it was new, and not all of it was wise.

In the midst of the pitched rhetoric, however, one retired Army colonel managed to call out the anti-gun rights side in a perfect way, particularly when he was told that he had blood on his hands.

In a Twitter confrontation, Kurt Schlichter, now a senior contributor at Townhall.com, said that if liberals are willing to lie about individual NRA members “having blood on (their) hands” to score rhetorical points, its likely they’re willing to lie about a lot of other things too — including not wanting to take your guns.

The social media confrontation began when conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt — one of the few luminaries on the right to publicly attend Saturday’s March for Our Lives in Washington D.C. — highlighted a bipartisan bill that he thought Schlichter (who has expressed a lack of trust in the motives of the left, on this and other issues) might be able to support.

Schlichter — who has previously noted that liberal anger hasn’t been directed against the NRA but against originalist conservatives — responded with his issue regarding working with the left on gun control issues.

And almost like clockwork…

Do you agree with Kurt Schlichter’s position?

Schlichter used the tweet to drive home the point.

Now, whether the Toomey/Coons act is a good idea is rather inconsequential here. What counts is the rhetoric — and the fact that it proves conservatives cannot trust the left on gun control.

In an aptly-titled column called “They Don’t Hate the NRA. They Hate You” for Townhall.com earlier this month, Schlichter outlined why the vitriol being spewed by the left on guns makes cooperation impossible.

RELATED: The View: Trump “Bully” but Biden “Chivalrous” for Talk about Beating Him up

“(T)here is the new meme, that the NRA is a ‘terrorist’ organization,” he wrote. “This means you are a ‘terrorist’ simply by advocating for your political views.

“Think about that. Labeling your political opponents as ‘terrorists’ — gee, that can’t end badly. Violence against and suppression of terrorists is okay, isn’t it? And when this ploy works with guns, it will happen with the next right the left wants to take from us.”

If they’re willing to lie to you about what you are, Schlichter argues, they’re willing to lie to you about everything else regarding guns.

“They hate you,” Schlichter concluded. “And you need to act accordingly.”

Tucker Finally Had Enough of David Hogg, Took Him Down on National TV

In the wake of the Parkland shooting, the left has waged a proxy war on guns. And they’ve done so with child soldiers.

The most prominent of these has been David Hogg. If you’ve been anywhere near a TV, computer, smartphone or newspaper these past few weeks, you’ve undoubtedly seen Hogg, whose only compelling argument is that he survived the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School and that you need to listen to him.

Whenever someone calls Hogg out on the fact that being a shooting survivor does not make one an expert on constitutional law, gun policy, school security, or really anything other than your own experience, they’re called insensitive — almost as if the left is hiding behind these child soldiers, using them as human shields.

Tucker Carlson has had enough of this line of thinking. On his Friday show, in an analysis of the rhetoric of David Hogg and Emma Gonzalez — two of the most vocal anti-gun Stoneman Douglas students — Carlson called them extremists who are “definitely not fit to be making policy for the rest of us.”

Conservative Tribune Daily Email

Thanks For Subscribing!

“A handful of teens from Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida, they have a right to their views, obviously. This is a given,” Carlson said.

“But the rest of us also have rights including the right to assess what they are saying and decide whether it ought to become law to which we are subject. These are not religious figures; we are not the faithful. We’re all citizens here. Let’s take a look at what they are saying and decide if it’s a good idea or not.”

Carlson went on to play Hogg’s infamous profanity-imbued interview with The Outline.

“Sell more guns, murder more children, get reelected. That is David Hogg’s view of the other side of the debate,” Carlson said.

Do you think gun control advocates are hiding behind David Hogg?

“Emma Gonzalez, meanwhile, another celebrated survivor the shooting basically agrees with that. She recently said in a speech, quote, ‘I don’t really care what people who defend the Second Amendment have to say.’

“Let’s take this seriously,” Carlson continued. “If you honestly don’t care what the people who disagree with you think, if you believe they want to ‘murder more children,’ who are you?

“Well, you’re angry. You’re definitely not fit to be making policy for the rest of us. You are by definition an extremist. You should not have power if you really believe anyone who disagrees with you is evil and wants to kill the innocent.”

He also went after those who want to hide behind Hogg and Gonzalez, or attack him for having the temerity to look at their rhetoric.

RELATED: Pro-Gun Parkland Survivor Just Made the Single Most Powerful Point of the Entire Gun Debate

“Wait, you say, ‘Why are you picking on David Hogg? He’s only a kid, he shouldn’t be held to adult standards of reasoning or think critically about the consequences of what he espouses.’

“Well, yeah, exactly. He is a kid,” Carlson continued. “He has just been through unspeakable tragedy. And that’s why adults shouldn’t be using him or his friends to push their agendas to the rest of us.”

“This kid who saw unspeakable tragedy, he saw his classmates killed. And that’s exactly why he shouldn’t be involved in formulating a response to it. Because he is a kid. So you can’t simultaneously argue that you need to shut up and listen to him and if you don’t you’re bad which is what the left is arguing and that we shouldn’t take what he says seriously or literally.

“You kind of have to choose one,” Carlson concluded. “I’m happy to choose the first one.”
