Expert: Erdogan Regime Considers Christians, Jews ‘Enemies of the State’

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s authoritarian government has deemed members of religious minorities, such as Christians and Jews, “enemies of the state,” an analyst tells Breitbart News, echoing the U.S. State Department.

“The religious minorities in Turkey, like the Christians, Jews, and a few others, suffer from unequal treatment. … The religious minorities are believed to be enemies of the state,” Dr. Y. Alp Aslandogan, the executive director of the Alliance for Shared Values, a non-profit group that promotes bringing people from different backgrounds together, told Breitbart News. “So the association with them becomes a crime. So those religious minorities, those citizens themselves, are pushed into enemy status.”

“That’s what all religious minorities suffer from — the Armenians, the Christian Orthodox, and the Jews, among others — they suffer from this kind of stigma,” he added.

In the latest U.S. State Department International Religious Freedom Report, the American government acknowledged that discrimination against Christians and other religious minorities intensified in Turkey following the failed coup attempt of July 2016.

State reports that following the rebellion seeking to depose Erdogan, the president of Muslim-majority Turkey:

Some foreign citizens, including several individuals with ties to Christian groups, faced detention, residency-permission problems, or denial of entry to the country under the state of emergency powers following the attempted coup. The government continued to prosecute individuals for ‘openly disrespecting the religious belief of a group.

Several foreign Christian missionaries were subjected to deportation, and cancellation of valid residency permits without notice. The government provided limited explanation or justification for such actions. The government denied any anti-Christian motivation underlying these actions.

Breitbart News also spoke with Emre Celik, the president of the Rumi Forum, an organization dedicated to intercultural and interfaith dialogue, about the persecution of Christians and other religious minorities in Turkey under the Erdogan administration.

“Erdogan’s bigotry against Christians goes against the very fabric of Islam’s respect towards the ‘People of the book’ – a Quranic term for Jews and Christians – and does not comply with the very fundamental principle of democracy that people of different faith backgrounds need to be treated justly and with respect,” Celik told Breitbart News.

“It’s unfortunate that prejudicial and polarizing language is being used for political gain and has become commonplace in Erdogan’s Turkey – against Christians and numerous other minorities,” he continued.

Consistent with Celik’s remarks, Dr. Aslandogan told Breitbart News that Erdogan and his allies use association with religious minorities as a form of attack against their political opponents.

“There has been hate speech and defamation against religious minorities from the ruling party. When they want to attack their enemies, they openly associate them with religious minorities,” explained Aslandogan. “They accuse religious minorities as trying to undermine progress.”

“Erdogan, for instance, attacks his enemies by referring to them as the pawn of Israel or the pawn of the Jews or the pawn of the Catholics,” he also said.

Echoing the State Department, the executive director for the Alliance for Shared Values also noted that the lack of legal standing for religious minorities in Turkey prevents them from owning territory, rendering them a landless group.

“They don’t have a legal standing, so they cannot officially function as a legal entity. They can only exist as community foundations, so that creates difficulties for them because they cannot exist as legal entities. Therefore, they cannot own property either,” he told Breitbart News.

“During the formation of the Turkish Republic, many of the lands of the religious minorities were confiscated, and although Erdogan took some steps to restore those lands to the religious minorities, he later made a U-turn,” he added.

Breitbart News spoke to Aslandogan and Celik after they participated in a panel discussion hosted by the Newseum in Washington, DC, on March 5.

In remarks prepared for the event, Aslandogan pointed out that President Erdogan is seeking to become the “caliph” of the Muslim world.

Currently, “non-Muslim minorities” in Turkey “suffer various forms of discrimination,” he stressed during the March 5 discussion.

Open Doors, which tracks the mistreatment of Christians across the world, records that out of 50 countries, Turkey is the 37th-worst nation for persecution against followers of Jesus Christ. It notes:

Religious nationalism has grown to new heights. President Erdogan has strengthened his position, trying to transform Turkey from a secular state into a Sunni Muslim one. Leaving Islam for Christianity is considered a betrayal of the Turkish identity, Islam, and the family.

Christians have no access to state jobs and experience discrimination in private employment, especially where employers have ties to the government.

According to Open Doors, 187,000 Christians are in Turkey.

The State Department, which places the estimated number of Christians at nearly 300,000, notes that the Christians belong to a plethora of denominations, including Armenian Apostolic Orthodox Christians, Roman Catholics, Syrian Orthodox Christians, Russian Orthodox Christians, Jehovah’s Witnesses, various Protestant denominations, Chaldean Christians, and Greek Orthodox Christians, among others.

Dems Say It’s ‘Racist’ For Trump To Call Maxine Waters Dumb. It’s Not. She Really Is Dumb.

Over the weekend, President Donald Trump unloaded on his political opponents at a rally in Moon Township, Pennsylvania. The Commander-in-Chief laid into Democratic Rep. Maxine Waters, who calls for Trump’s impeachment about once an hour, stating that she is a “low IQ individual.”

“Maxine Waters, a very low IQ individual, ever see her? You ever seen her?” slammed Trump. “‘We will impeach him! We will impeach the president!’ But he hasn’t done anything wrong. ‘It doesn’t matter, we will impeach him!'”

“She’s a low IQ individual. You can’t help it. She really is,” added the president.

Reflexively, Waters and a chorus of Democrats called Trump’s remarks “racist.”

“He has been name-calling. He’s been saying all kinds of things. And I certainly expected him to come out with some racist remarks about me. So, he did exactly what I expected him do,” Waters said on MSNBC, playing the victim.

Former Obama speechwriter John Favreau posted a now-viral tweet stating the same: criticism of Waters’ intelligence (or lack thereof) is “racist.” Period.

But this has nothing to do with Waters’ race, and everything to do with the congresswoman’s own words and actions. Waters is not smart; she actually incredibly dumb, often unhinged, dripping in conspiracy theories, and over-emotional, as proven by countless asinine comments by the Democrat.

Here’s some proof:

Waters claims Russian President Vladimir Putin is invading North Korea. Yes, North Korea.

WATCH:

Waters says she was once a millennial. (No, she wasn’t; that’s not how it works.)

WATCH:

Tinfoil hat Waters claims the Russians sabotaged her speech at an urban housing event. They didn’t.

Daily Wire’s Joseph Curl reports on what actually happened (an “internal routing error”):

“RT, which is Russian television, absolutely interfered with a speech of mine on the floor of Congress and blocked me out for 10 minutes,” she yelled.

“They don’t play. They mean business,” Waters said.

Waters was citing an incident last January when C-SPAN briefly showed RT on its internet feed. The public access network said the problem was created by an “internal routing error.”

In promotion for abortion at the 2004 March for Life, Waters said: “I have to march because my mother could not have an abortion.”

(We don’t really need to explain this one.)

Waters suggests President Trump will eventually be impeached for “Russian collusion,” citing Trump calling Hillary Clinton “cooked” and chanting “lock her up” at Putin’s behest. (Did she provide evidence? Nope!)

“I really do believe that much of what you saw coming out of Trump’s mouth was a play from Putin’s playbook,” she said. “I think that when you saw him absolutely calling Hillary crooked, the ‘lock her up, lock her up,’ all of that was developed. I think that was developed strategically with people from the Kremlin, with Putin.”

Waters claims she never called for President Trump’s impeachment, after continuously calling for President Trump’s impeachment (very loudly and publicly).

WATCH:

Waters claims President Donald Trump and genocidal North Korean dictator “Kim Jong Um” are one in the same. The Daily Wire reports:

“I said that he should be impeached and they said ‘Don’t use that word,'” Waters said. “‘Don’t say anything about impeachment. The Republicans will only use this against us’. Democrats, I don’t care what the Republicans say, I say impeach 45! …”

“My gun is bigger than your gun. My rocket is more powerful than your rocket. And, on and on and on. All’s I see is two heads of state Donald Trump and Kim Jong Um, (sic) both who have questionable agenda’s and questionable health.”

And the list goes on.

So, no, it’s not “racist” to call someone who happens to be black “a low IQ individual” because of their past objectively stupid comments. Race has nothing to do with it. And to suggest otherwise without evidence casts Waters as some victim of her skin color.

Who’s really the racist here?

Censorship: Twitter Blocks Trump’s 2020 Slogan as “Sensitive Material”

“Keep America Great!” That’s the 2020 campaign slogan Donald Trump unveiled during a rally in Pennsylvania this weekend.

It’s catchy. It conveys the message Trump wants to get across to voters — namely, that he’s turning the country around, both culturally and economically. It’s pithy. It beats “Make America Great Again, Again.” It fits well on a hat.

And, according to the folks at Twitter, it’s “sensitive material” and you shouldn’t be seeing it.

In yet another case of the most censorious social media platform in all of the Democratic People’s Republic of Silicon Valley deciding they’re the only ones who decide what political speech you can see, multiple reports on the social media site claim the slogan was blocked as “sensitive material” when conservative media icon Matt Drudge tried to tweet it out.

Here was the photographic (well, screenshotographic) evidence from Breitbart Deputy Political editor Amanda Lee House.

Conservative Tribune Daily Email

Thanks For Subscribing!

And, other images seemed to indicated that this wasn’t just limited to a single tweet.

In fact, as Breitbart pointed out, this was part of a larger pattern involving censoring any tweets that linked back to Drudge or his website.

Do you think there needs to be a conservative alternative to Facebook and Twitter?

Breitbart News recently reported on Twitter filtering tweets from President Trump and his son, Donald Trump Jr. The filter appears to be triggered whenever anyone (including the President of the United States) retweets the Drudge Report,” Breitbart noted.

“Users navigating to the official account of the Drudge Report, will find that all tweets from the account that contain URLs are hidden behind the same “sensitive content” warning message. When the President — or anyone else –retweets the account, their tweets are hidden too.”

Now, keep in mind that this only happens when you have your sensitive filter on. However, there are plenty of institutions — schools and libraries come to mind — that have sensitive filters on their browsers.

And, rest assured, these filters aren’t exactly going after ThinkProgress.

It’s become increasingly clear that conservatives need to fight a battle against social media, which has so clearly allied themselves against a) free speech and b) conservatism. In the battle for the hearts and minds of America, it’s imperative that we make sure our voices are heard by these behemoths.

If not, our ideas will be socially engineered out of existence — no matter whether they work or not.

Ever Wonder Who’d Win a 2nd Civil War? This Colonel Did the Math and It’s Brutal

Two world wars and a protracted conflict in Vietnam and the American Civil War still remains the bloodiest war in our country’s history. An estimated 620,000 men lost their lives in places with names like Antietam, Gettysburg, Shiloh and Vicksburg — all in the name of ending the great evil that was slavery.

Back then, of course, the Democrats treated Dixie as if it were their fiefdom. When they lost control of the White House in 1860, they were livid. This time, they hadn’t lost it to the tepid, elitist Whig Party but the upstart Republicans, who had agitated for an end to slavery. By the time Abraham Lincoln took office in March of 1861, seven Southern states had seceded, and four more would eventually join the Confederate States of America.

Four years later, the South laid in tatters, slavery as an institution had been destroyed, and the secession had been a failure. Lesson learned, right?

Well, it may be a century and a half later, but the Democrats haven’t learned their lesson well enough. In fact, after Trump’s election, there were plenty of liberals talking about a civil war.

Sure, slavery may not be involved, but there’s a different kind of culture war being perpetrated — and Townhall.com contributor and retired Col. Kurt Schlichter thinks the Democrats would suffer the same ignominious fate they did a hundred and fifty years ago.

Conservative Tribune Daily Email

Thanks For Subscribing!

“It’s obvious that the central tenet of the Democrat Party platform is now hatred and contempt for Normal Americans. Taking their cue from the elites in Europe and Canada who are stripping dissenters of their free speech rights and religious freedoms, the leftist elite is moving to solidify its hold on power here with the eager assistance of tech companies and the moral support of the Fredocons who yearn to return to pseudo-relevance as the ruling class’s slobberingly loyal opposition,” Schlichter wrote, referring to social media companies cracking down on conservative publishers and personalities.

“In California, the leftist government is practically firing on Fort Sumter. And nationally, these aspiring fascists are especially eager to disarm Normal Americans – doing so would be an object lesson in who’s the boss, as well as solving that frustrating problem of the Normals having the ability to resist.”

“Do I think there will be a civil war? No, but there could be,” Schlichter wrote.”Civil war is unlikely, but never underestimate Democrat stupidity and hatred. The Schlichter family learned that lesson a century and half ago, the last time the Democrats decided to try to impose their hatred of basic human rights on the rest of the country, when an army of Democrats burned our family hometown.

“Oh, they paid for it. And they would pay again. Democrats are 0-1 in insurrections, and if they went for another round, they would be 0-2. It’s a matter of terrain, numbers, and morale.”

Do you think this Col. is right?

Schlichter said that those “who think history began when Obama was elected, don’t understand the dangerous game they are playing when they talk about how they want to impose their brown shirt vision upon red America.”

If they want to go to war over guns, or over rights, or over any other issues, Schlichter notes that in terms of territory, the Democrats actually control very little of it.

“Let’s talk terrain and numbers. Remember the famous red v. blue voting map? There is a lot of red, and in the interior the few blue splotches are all cities like Las Vegas or Denver,” Schlichter says.

“That is a lot of territory for a counter-insurgent force to control, and this is critical. The red is where the food is grown, the oil pumped, and through which everything is transported. And that red space is filled with millions of American citizens with small arms, a fairly large percentage of whom have military training.”

RELATED: Ex-Times Editor Keeps Sickening Item in Her Purse That Is a Constant Reminder of Biased Media

Now, the likelihood of this is almost nonexistent. However, with Democrats talking Calexit or attempts at imposing a popular vote in the stead of the Electoral College, things could get awfully hairy. But there’s one last issue Schlichter notes: that of commitment.

“The Democrat threat to peace is based on its policies designed to deprive Normal Americans of their right to speak freely, to worship freely, and to defend themselves and their rights with firearms. Make no mistake – millions of Normal Americans are willing to risk death to defend those rights,” he writes.

“In fact, many swore to do so when they entered our military and law enforcement. But who is the leftist big talker willing to die to impose the fascist dream of censorship, religious oppression, and disarmament on Normal American citizens? Is the screeching SJW at Yale going to suit up in Kevlar? Is the Vox columnist going to grab a M4? Is the Hollywood poser going to switch her gyno-beanie for a helmet?”

Well, no, probably not. Then again, Civil War II: Electric Boogaloo also isn’t likely to happen at all. But the next time a Democrat starts talking tough about conflict, show him Col. Schlichter’s brutal article. And then give him a change of underwear.

Please like and share this story on Facebook and Twitter with your thoughts on Schlichter’s article.

White House Unveils Plan to Prevent School Shootings

Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School staff, teachers and students return to school greeted by police and well wishers in Parkland, Florida / Getty Images

BY:

The Trump administration announced on Sunday its plan to address school safety in the wake of last month’s shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School that left 17 dead.

The administration’s proposal would implement or call for the implementation of a number of immediate reforms meant to address school safety and reduce gun violence. Most prominently, the White House is backing funding for firearms training for school officials, including teachers. A similar proposal, which expanded the number of armed officers in schools, was implemented by the Obama administration in the months following the mass shooting in Sandy Hook, Conn.

The administration also has backed gun violence protection orders, which create a due-process-supported way for officials to temporarily seize the guns of a potentially dangerous individual. Also known as gun violence restraining orders, the proposal has earned the backing of conservatives, who see it as a way to curb the threat of those who raise red flags while respecting the Second Amendment and avoiding more general bans.

Legislatively, the administration is calling on Congress to pass two bills to enhance gun and school safety. The Fix NICS Act, a bipartisan proposal led by Sens. John Cornyn (R., Texas) and Christopher Murphy (D., Conn.), would implement much-needed changes to the FBI’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS), allocating hundreds of millions of dollars to induce state and local law enforcement to submit more of their records to the system. The Stop School Violence Act, another bipartisan proposal shepherded by Sen. Orrin Hatch (R., Utah), would reauthorize grants to states to support evidence-based training and tools to help reduce school violence.

Other proposals include additional funding for the nation’s faltering mental health infrastructure, and a full review of the FBI’s tip line. The tip line has come under scrutiny in recent weeks, after it was revealed that someone had contacted the line regarding the Parkland, Fla. shooter’s gun ownership and his desire to kill people.

In addition to its immediate proposal, the White House announced the formation of a commission on school safety. Jointly chaired by Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos, Secretary of Health and Human Services Alex Azar, and Attorney General Jeff Sessions, the commission will consider bigger-picture concerns. These, Politico reported, will include consideration of Obama-era guidance on school discipline, the impact of video games on violence, and the effects of press coverage of mass shootings.

The White House’s proposal is the latest action by the Trump administration meant to address gun violence. Last month, President Donald Trump instructed the Department of Justice to implement new regulation to ban bump-fire stocks, which can be used to increase the rate of fire of semi-automatic weapons. Federal gun crime prosecutions continue to rise under Attorney General Jeff Sessions, with a 23 percent increase between the second quarter of 2017 and the second quarter of 2016.

The proposal did not include some of the gun control proposals the president championed during a televised meeting with top lawmakers. The new plan omitted a proposal to ban gun ownership for those under 21 years old, expanding background checks to sales of used guns between private parties, confiscating guns from certain people with mental health issued before applying due process protections, or a ban on certain semi-automatic rifles like the AR-15. Those proposals were praised by gun control groups in the wake of the meeting and panned by the National Rifle Association.

Within a week of the televised meeting, the president and National Rifle Association announced they had held a private meeting in the Oval Office. The NRA said the meeting went well, and the president had expressed his support of the Second Amendment and due process rights.

“Good (Great) meeting in the Oval Office tonight with the NRA!” Trump tweeted on March 1.

“I had a great meeting tonight with @realDonaldTrump & @VP,” Chris Cox, a top executive at the gun rights group, tweeted the same day. “We all want safe schools, mental health reform and to keep guns away from dangerous people. POTUS & VPOTUS support the Second Amendment, support strong due process and don’t want gun control. #NRA #MAGA”

The NRA did not comment on the White House’s new proposal.

Dem Congressman Calls DeVos ‘Dumber Than a Bag of Hammers’

Jared Huffman (L) and Van Jones / Facebook Screenshot

BY:

Congressman Jared Huffman (D., Calif.) tweeted on Monday that if President Donald Trump wanted to meet someone with an “IQ problem,” he should meet “rich, white and dumber than a bag of hammers” Education Secretary Betsy DeVos.

“Dear President Trump, if you want to meet someone who has an actual IQ problem (as opposed to just being black), meet your Education Secretary Betsy DeVos. Rich, white and dumber than a bag of hammers,” Huffman tweeted.

Huffman included video of a recent “60 Minutes” interview with DeVos. In the interview, she appeared to struggle to answer questions about her home state of Michigan, a place where she was a vocal advocate for school choice.

Huffman’s tweet comes days after Trump, during a campaign event in Pennsylvania, attacked fellow Californian Rep. Maxine Waters as having a “low IQ.”

“Did you ever see her? Did you ever see her? ‘We will impeach him. We will impeach the president,'” Trump said in reference to Waters’ frequent calls to impeach Trump.

“She’s a low IQ individual,” Trump said. “You can’t help it.”

Deepfakes: Digitally-Altered Video Could Become A Serious Problem

Could counterfeit videos featuring digitally-altered faces become a problem for the future? Experts say yes.

According to CBS News, sweeping the web now is a revolution in the digital age that can paste an individual’s face over another’s body, creating an all-too-convincing illusion that it’s the real thing. Take a look at this video of President Trump’s face pasted over Alec Baldwin’s impression of him on SNL:

Hollywood used to spend big money to achieve that kind of realistic effect. Now, somebody can do it from the comfort of their mother’s basement.

“The idea that someone could put another person’s face on an individual’s body, that would be like a homerun for anyone who wants to interfere in a political process,” said Virginia Senator Mark Warner. “This is now going to be the new reality, surely by 2020, but potentially even as early as this year.”

“There is no Democrat or a Republican that would be safe from this kind of manipulation. But, boy oh boy, we need as a country to get our act together.”

Here’s another video that did something similar with Vladimir Putin:

Called “Deepfakes,” the illusion is created through a “machine learning” software that can superimpose celebrity faces onto the bodies of other people.

Hany Farid of Dartmouth College says society is not ready for the deepfake revolution.

“We are absolutely not ready for this. We are absolutely not ready for it,” Farid replied. “On so many different levels, we’re not ready for it.”

A program for Adobe can even create new audio from written text. Farid says that’s “terrifying.”

“Right out of the gate, that’s terrifying,” Farid said. “I mean, that is just terrifying. Now I can create the president of the United States saying just about anything.”

Adobe recognizes the technology could have “objectionable use,” but they ultimately feel “the positive impact of technology will always overshadow the negative.”

As far as the entertainment industry goes, the more the merrier, but as far as day to day life, things could get complicated, and people could weaponize the technology to make it seem people said and did things they did not. No need for it to be an over-produced extravaganza, as it could be something as simple as tweaking one or two words in a sentence to disparage someone.

“I think the nightmare situation is a fake video of a politician saying, ‘I have launched nuclear weapons against a country.’ The other country reacts within minutes, seconds, and we have a global nuclear war,” Farid said.

Farid hopes that tools developed by himself and others will be useful to quickly identify “deepfake” technology.

“We have a ‘fake news’ phenomenon that is not going away,” he said. “And so add to that fake images, fake audio, fake video, and you have an explosion of what I would call an information war.”

Another deepfake problem is in the area of internet porn, where celebrity faces like Gal Gadot and Scarlett Johansson have been pasted onto real porn actors. Just last month, Pornhub announced that all deepfake videos would henceforth be banned from airing.

House Intelligence Panel Preparing Report on Election Interference

Devin Nunes / Getty Images

BY:

The House Intelligence Committee has completed interviews and is preparing a report on its probe into Russian interference in the 2016 election, according to a person familiar with the matter.

The report resulting from the yearlong probe will be based on more that 50 interviews and thousands of pages of documents, the Wall Street Journal reported.  Those interviewed over the course of the investigation include prominent members of the Trump campaign: former campaign manager Corey Lewandowski, son Donald Trump, Jr., son-in-law Jared Kushner, and former senior strategist Steve Bannon.

The Republican-led probe has been conducted at the same time as a Senate Select Committee on Intelligence investigation, and special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into alleged Russian meddling and collusion during the 2016 election.

The intent of both the House and Senate probes has been to take a closer look at a January 2017 conclusion from the U.S. intelligence community that the Russian government took steps to influence American voters.

Three Russian companies and 13 Russian individuals were indicted last month on charges of perpetrating an effort to interfere in the election. Trump, meanwhile, has continued to deny any collusion between his campaign and Russia for the purpose of targeting Democratic opponent Hillary Clinton and benefiting of his campaign.

In early January, the Washington Free Beacon reported that the House Intelligence Committee was expanding its investigation into how the FBI and Department of Justice handled its probe into interference. As a result of that expansion, chair of the Intelligence Committee Devin Nunes authored and ultimately released the controversial “Nunes Memo.” The memo alleged abuses of power on the parts of the FBI and the DOJ in their surveillance of Trump campaign foreign policy advisor Carter Page.

Nunes had previously been criticized for appearing to try to obstruct justice in the panel’s investigation. However, he was cleared of any wrongdoing in a December 2017 House ethics probe.

Democrats, meanwhile, have had their share of criticism when it comes to the House investigation. Throughout the process, Democrats have said they are unhappy with what they deem to be a lack of thoroughness in the GOP-run investigation. The Democrats suggested six individuals of interest they wanted to subpoena late last month, but those individuals were rejected by the Republicans on the committee.

The Journal notes that, based on interviews with multiple lawmakers and aides on both sides, Republicans and Democrats on the House panel are unlikely to come to a bipartisan conclusion on some of the central questions in the probe, including whether anyone from the Trump campaign worked with Russians to help tip the election in his favor.

Poll: 10% of college students say it’s sometimes acceptable to shut down a speaker with violence

Cheer up, buckaroos. Six months ago, a different poll had this number at 19 percent. The Leaders of Tomorrow are becoming less mobbish. Now only a tenth of them would consider punching you in the face if you said something they disagreed with.

That’s the good news. The bad news is that they’re much more chill about shouting down a speaker in order to deny their audience the right to hear them. The first column here is the percentage that deems the tactic fully acceptable, the second column somewhat acceptable, and the third never acceptable:

Only one group among the eight tested has a majority that says it’s sometimes okay to shout down a speaker. Take a bow, college Democrats.

That’s from the new Knight Foundation survey of views of free speech on campuses. Democrats lead on this question too, although not as dramatically:

I don’t understand the reasoning there. It’s not okay to disinvite a speaker just because students oppose them but it’s very much okay to disinvite them if students oppose them so vehemently that they’re willing to break things because of it? Overall 72 percent oppose rescinding invites because some students oppose a speaker but 69 percent support canceling if violence is in the mix. Incentives towards bad behavior don’t come much more vivid or perverse than that. If you’re going to bar a speaker from campus because his views are disfavored, at least privilege the views of the intolerant yet peaceful majority over the violent hecklers.

Look again at that last table, though. Democrats have the biggest share in favor of booting disfavored speakers, true, but even a majority of Republicans are prepared to bow to threats from the likes of Antifa by barring people from campus in the name of averting violence. That’s not the only question to spot a surprising amount of Republican support for censorship either:

Don’t be surprised, as that result is broadly in line with polls of the general population on hate speech. Left-wingers are more strongly in favor than right-wingers but there’s a significant minority of Republicans that are open to this idea (and to other terrible ideas involving censorship), presumably on the theory that some of their own favored groups might be protected from criticism under “hate speech” laws. As older right-leaning Americans age out of the electorate and are replaced by young progressives, I hope we don’t end up learning the hard way how foolish that assumption is.

One more point: Women tend to be worse on this subject, i.e. more open to censorship, than men are. You see a gender gap in the last two results above but it’s dramatic on this question, a broad overview of where students’ priorities lie. Given a choice between a campus that protects speech rights first and diversity/inclusiveness second or the opposite, which do college kids prefer?

Women and minorities, two pillars of the Democratic coalition, are willing to shave a little off of speech rights in the name of making everyone in the community feel more comfortable. That’s the argument for hate-speech laws too. Groups that have historically had less political power are more interested in limiting rights for the sake of equality, even when those rights involve the First Amendment.

Progress: Texas teachers receive active shooter/firearms training

Why wait for the federal government to take action? (Which probably isn’t going to happen anyway.) If you want to make your schools a bit less of a target for the next madman, make sure some of the willing teachers are ready to defend the students if push comes to shove. (Or “shoot” in this case.) In the North Texas school district, they’re taking matters into their own hands and participating in safe firearms training and how to respond to an active shooter situation. (CBS Dallas/Fort Worth)

Teachers in North Texas are readying themselves in the wake of the Parkland, Florida school shooting that killed 17.

Sixteen teachers and school staff members got a whole day of training Saturday on how to handle a weapon in the event of an active shooter situation. The free event was led by a former Irving police officer.

Teachers like Kim Raney got a lesson in protecting their students.

“Its scary sometimes. We do our best to have security at our schools, but you never know what’s going to happen. And it’s better to be prepared than not prepared,” said Raney.

The instructor is a former police officer with 30 years experience. Tim Bulot is also the owner of Strategic Weapons Academy of Texas, where he normally provides training for cops, SWAT teams and security contractors, but now he’s instructing educators on how to respond to a life or death situation as well as how to safely use their firearms.

I’m sure we’ll be able to find someone to complain about this in no time at all, but doesn’t this seem like a best last resort if there are no other options available? Particularly in rural areas, it may be quite a while before the authorities arrive. And as we saw in Parkland, you may not even have any immediate relief then. Simply teaching someone about proper safety precautions and giving them a few sessions on the practice range is definitely important, but these folks are going one step further. It’s no replacement for complete military or law enforcement training, but if the lessons stick with them it could mean the difference between life and death.

There’s also the deterrent factor to be considered. Rarely are these school shootings done by some stranger who travels in from far out of town. Usually, it’s someone from the community. And if the local news makes it very clear that any shooter arriving on the scene will be met with multiple armed teachers with training on bringing down an intruder, there’s a fair chance they’re going to look for another target.

Of course, in Texas that may be hard to find. As they say… an armed society is a polite society. And people are definitely catching on.
