New brain study says that people really do get dumber when temperatures get hotter

You’ve probably heard people complain how it seems like people get dumber when the temperatures get hotter. Well, as it turns out, there appears to be some truth in that belief, according to a study published Tuesday on the PLOS Medicine website.

Researchers from Harvard University’s T.H. Chan School of Public Health found that the human brain functions 13 percent slower when it has to work in extreme heat.

How was the study conducted?

Scientists studied 44 college students over a 12-day period in Boston in July 2016, one of the city’s worst heat waves on record, according to KDKA-TV.

Twenty-two undergrads lived in air-conditioned brick-based buildings while the other 22 lived in similar type buildings with no air conditioning.

Scientists added that the buildings the students lived in made the effect of heat on their brains even worse.

“These buildings have a hard time shedding heat during hotter summer days created by the changing climate, giving rise to indoor heat waves,” study co-author Joseph Allen told KDKA in a press release.

The participants performed two self-administered cognition tests each day.

What were the findings?

Those living in the buildings without air conditioning performed more than 13 percent worse on math and memory tests than their cohorts who lived in air-conditioned dorms.

There’s long been a belief that older people or those who are ill are the ones whose health is most at-risk during higher temperatures.

“Most of the research on the health effects of heat has been done in vulnerable populations, such as the elderly, creating the perception that the general population is not at risk from heat waves,” Jose Guillermo Cedeño-Laurent, the study’s lead author said in the release.

“Knowing what the risks are across different populations is critical considering that in many cities… the number of heat waves is projected to increase due to climate change.”

Harvard University Climate Change Solutions funded the study.

Secret Service wants students to report friends showing ‘concerning’ behaviors: It isn’t ‘snitching’

Schools should encourage students to turn in classmates who exhibit “concerning” behaviors, according to a new set of school violence prevention guidelines released Thursday by the U.S. Secret Service.

But it shouldn’t be considered “snitching,” according to the report.

The recommendations in the 32-page report, “Enhancing School Safety Using a Threat Assessment Model,” is partly a response to the mass killings at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, and at Santa Fe High School in Santa Fe, Texas.

Among other things, the report suggests training students, parents, teachers, and other staff members so they can recognize threatening behaviors and learn how to report them.

Is this considered ‘snitching?’

Students should be taught that reporting suspect behavior is not considered “snitching” the report states.

“Snitching is informing on someone for personal gain, here students are encouraged to come forward when they are worried about a friend who is struggling, or when they are trying to keep someone from getting hurt,” according to the guidelines. “Remind students that if they are concerned about a classmate or friend, they need to keep speaking out until that person gets the help they need.”

The guide cautions that there is no composite profile for student attackers. Some do well in school and others do not, for example, according to the report. Some were loners, while others were well-liked and popular.

A series of steps are recommended including the development of a multidisciplinary threat assessment team, a definition of “concerning” behaviors and establishing a central reporting system such as a school website, an email address, a phone number or a phone app, for example.

What is considered concerning behavior?

Schools are also urged to develop definitions for concerning behavior and a process for documenting them. One potentially concerning behavior is an “inappropriate” interest in weapons, school attacks, or other forms of violence.

Schools should also keep tabs on whether the student has been under a lot of stress or had a series of recent losses and challenges, the guide suggests. Other considerations are whether the student has a trusting relationship with an adult at the school and whether the student feels emotionally connected to other students.

“The Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting tragedy served as the impetus to go beyond our past work and go in depth regarding the how: how do we solve this epidemic?” Secret Service Director R. D. Alles said. “The report truly is an operational guide, and I am confident that if embraced and followed by our nation’s communities and schools, we will together reduce the occurrence of violence and the tragic loss of life.”

Justice And DHS Claim Nearly Half Of Children 5 Or Younger Separated At The Border Came With Adults Who Were Criminals Or Not Even Their Parents

On Thursday, the Trump administration announced that almost half of the children who were five years old or younger and separated from adults at the U.S. border couldn’t be reunited with them because many of the adults were violent criminals, and some of the adults weren’t even the children’s parents.

Teacher investigated over tweet ripping ‘s**tcake’ MAGA hat teens from Whataburger attack: ‘F*** EM’

A Texas public school district is investigating a teacher over a tweet lambasting the teen boys who were seated at a Whataburger table last week when a man was caught on video throwing a drink in one of their faces and walking off with his “Make America Great Again” hat after allegedly ripping it from his head.

“These s**tcake kids r the same type to wear a MAGA hat to the African American museum,” read a July 4 tweet apparently from Anthony Aguirre Junior High social studies teacher Jogi Pattisapu’s account, the Houston Chronicle reported. “The same douchebag kids who do a Nazi salute in a class picture then claim it was a joke. F*** EM.”

Channelview Independent School District spokeswoman LaKeisha LeBlanc told KSAT-TV that Pattisapu “is a teacher” in the district and that officials “are aware of the comments made on social media” and that the “district is taking this matter seriously and we are conducting an investigation.”

LeBlanc told the Chronicle on Tuesday she couldn’t comment on whether disciplinary action will be taken.

What’s the background?

Hunter Richard, 16, and his friends were sitting at a Whataburger in San Antonio after midnight July 4 when a man allegedly ripped the cap off Richard’s head — pulling out some of his hair in the process, the teen told WOAI-TV — and then picked up a drink from the table and threw it in Richard’s face.

“You ain’t supportin’ s**t, n*****,” the man is heard saying in cellphone video of the incident.

The grinning man is then seen walking from the restaurant with Richard’s cap, calling the teen a “b***h ass, motherf***er” and informing Richard that his cap “is going right in my f***in’ fireplace, b***h.”

Richard and his two friends, both also 16, told the station the attack was unprovoked.

Here’s a clip of the incident. (Content warning: Profanity and racial slur):

Kino Jimenez, 30, was located by robbery task force detectives, police told the paper, and was taken into custody on a warrant for theft of person in connection with the incident.

Jimenez characterized his actions as a “lapse of judgment” and “out of character,” adding that he became enraged when he saw the teen’s MAGA hat, likening it to hooded caps worn by the Ku Klux Klan.

As for the tweet in question, a bit more apparently was expressed in the thread

When a Twitter user asked — in regard to the tweet in question — how support for the attack could be justified, here was the response:

There’s an archive of other posts in the thread. Some of the highlights:

Pattisapu declined to provide more information to the Chronicle when reached by phone Tuesday.

What does the school district have to say about electronic communication for personal use?

The district’s electronic communication policy doesn’t specifically address social media but does offer general guidelines for electronic communication for personal use, the Chronicle said.

“All employees shall be held to the same professional standards in their public use of electronic communication as for any other public conduct,” the policy states, according to the paper. “If an employee’s use of electronic communication violates state or federal law or district policy, or interferes with the employee’s ability to effectively perform his or her job duties, the employee is subject to disciplinary action, up to and including termination of employment.”

Poll: Voters Unmoved By Allegations Against Jordan In Ohio State Abuse Scandal

Same old bag of tricks from the democrats.

Via Roll Call:

Competing claims about what Rep. Jim Jordan knew or didn’t know about an Ohio sexual abuse scandal this week haven’t made a dent in his public profile, according to a new poll.

Jordan, a powerful Ohio conservative who is considering a run to take Paul Ryan’s place as Republican House leader, is seen as a top contender for that job by 9 percent of Americans, according to an Economist/YouGov poll published Thursday. That’s almost unchanged from last week, when 10 percent of respondents said they had a “very favorable” opinion of Jordan as a House leadership candidate.

The number of respondents who said they had a very unfavorable opinion of Jordan ticked up slightly — to 14 percent from 11 percent. But that’s within the poll’s margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points. And the number of people who said they have never heard of Jordan remained unchanged at 40 percent.

In the week between the two polls, at least eight former wrestlers have come forward with allegations that Jordan ignored athletes’ complaints about a team doctor while he was the assistant wrestling coach at Ohio State University decades ago. Jordan’s repeated denials have been backed up by former coaches from the school and more than three dozen House lawmakers have come to his defense.

HUGE DEVELOPMENT=> Peter Strzok Admits Phony Russia Dossier Came from Nellie Ohr at Fusion GPS (VIDEO)

On Thursday disgraced FBI investigator Peter Strzok admitted during his congressional hearing that the phony Russia dossier was funneled through the FBI by Nellier and Bruce Ohr.

The junk dossier went from Fusion GPS and Glenn Simpson–> to Nellie Ohr at Fusion GPS–> to her husband Bruce Ohr at the DOJ –> walked over to Peter Strzok at the FBI!

And it was all paid for by the Clinton Campaign and DNC!

This was the basis for the Trump-Russia collusion investigation.
It was all a Democrat Party operation.

Trump Pulled Classic Reagan Move on Germany During NATO Talks

Former President Ronald Reagan blew up a pipeline from the Soviet Union to Europe in 1982 that then-U.K. Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher desperately wanted.

Thatcher was negotiating with Reagan to allow U.S. suppliers to provide materials for a set of natural gas pipelines between the Soviets and Western Europe, a 1982 Christian Science Monitor article explained.

Reagan wanted to punish the Soviet Union for its repressive actions in Poland, as well as prevent a Western European dependency on Soviet fuel. He issued sanctions against the companies doing business for the pipelines, a September 1982 United Press International article explained.

The British and French companies issuing the materials defied the sanctions and continued to ship materials to build the pipelines. At this point, the pipelines were likely to continue regardless of U.S. intervention.

The sanctions were a sore spot between the United States and Britain. Thatcher said that she was “deeply wounded” by the sanctions, according to the UPI article. “[Reagan] did not quite realize how serious it was to us,” she said in a television interview.

Meanwhile, the U.S. government learned the Soviets were looking to steal American software to operate the pipelines, The Telegraph reported in February 2004. Via a KGB spy in France, the U.S. gave the Soviet Union “booby-trapped software” that would explode one of the pipelines.

“I don’t get the amnesia people pretend to have,” Grover Norquist, a close ally of the late Reagan and founder of Americans for Tax Reform, told The Daily Caller News Foundation.

The targeted pipeline went boom in 1982. It was “the most monumental non-nuclear explosion and fire ever seen from space,” former U.S. Air Force Secretary Thomas Reed said, according to The Telegraph. There were no casualties, but the explosion shocked even the U.S. government.

Today a similar pipeline conundrum exists. The Nord Stream 2 project, a projected gas pipeline from Russia to Western Europe that German Chancellor Angela Merkel wants, has garnered opposition from President Donald Trump and the U.S.

Critics question Trump resisting an ally like this. However, Norquist argues that Trump’s upset at Nord Stream 2 is just like Reagan’s dismay at the Soviet pipeline.

“What good is NATO if Germany is paying Russia billions of dollars for gas and energy?” Trump tweeted Wednesday.

Critics of Trump say his rebukes to allies like Germany are harming NATO. It “is a spectacle I never expected to see,” vocal Trump opposer Bill Kristol wrote on Twitter Wednesday.

Norquist sees it differently.

“What Trump is doing is exactly what Reagan went through with the same conversations,” Norquist said. “It’s what the Europeans do, they want us to pay for their defense … when [they] are making [themselves] completely blackmail-able on energy.”

Norquist rebuked those who claim that Trump is soft on Russia, saying that he’s taking the same actions Reagan did to weaken the Soviet Union in the 1980s. “The biggest thing for (Russia) is the price of gas … (Trump) wants to drill everywhere, (he) will drop the price of energy … and Hillary (Clinton) wants to not frack … and would’ve made Russia OPEC,” Norquist told TheDCNF.

Nord Stream 2 has been one of several rough patches between Trump and the United State’s Western European allies at the NATO summit in Brussels this week.

The president criticized fellow NATO members’ commitments to defense spending, asking that allies increase their defense spending to 4 percent of GDP, according to a Wednesday New York Times article. Trump signed a recommitment to the two percent spending minimum.

Lib Asks Man ‘When Was America Great,’ Gets 1 of Best Answers We’ve Ever Heard

When President Donald Trump announced on Monday evening that he had nominated Judge Brett Kavanaugh to serve on the Supreme Court, protests and counter-protests quickly broke out both in opposition and support of the nominee on the steps of our nation’s highest court.

One of the counter-protesters was a black man named Ricardo Caldwell who spoke with a reporter for Breitbart News about an interaction and conversation he’d had with one of the protesters who opposed Kavanaugh, President Trump and seemingly the nation of America as a whole.

Caldwell, who was wearing a red “Make America Great Again” cap, related how the woman he spoke with had asked pointedly “when was America great,” implying that the nation has never truly been “great” — typical tripe put forward by anti-American leftists.

The man’s answer to the protester’s snarky query was quite possibly better and of deeper substance than any heard by most of the supposed intellectuals and highly intelligent pundits commonly seen pontificating on cable news.

TRENDING: How Trump Brilliantly Screwed Over Red State Dem Senators with Kavanaugh Nomination

Caldwell first described how the protester barely even gave him an opportunity to answer her question about the message on his hat and instead seemed intent on provoking an emotional response instead of an actual dialogue.

“What she was talking about was slavery — I guess she feels that since I’m black I have to relate to slavery and that’s gotta be a ‘hot button issue,’” he stated.

“Nevermind the fact that we have never been a slave, don’t know anyone (who’s been a slave) and I’m not a slave, of course,” he continued.

He pointed to his hat as he noted that she had asked “when was America great” and recalled that his answer had been: “America has been great from the very start because this nation was founded on the principles of freeing us from tyranny.”

Do you think this man did a good job explaining how America has always been great?

“OK, there was slaves and so forth, but there were a lot of all colors — let’s say white — in this nation that did not feel like that was correct and this nation from that time has been moving out of tyranny, from bondage in one way or another, whether it be from Britain or whether it be from slavery as a whole,” he continued.

“In case she doesn’t know, there was a civil war, and in part … a whole lot of white people, if you look at history, died because they wanted this nation and people like myself to be free,” he added.

After taking a moment to compose himself as he spoke about his great love of this country, Caldwell stated, “Because this nation gives you the right to move yourself up out of any poor, bad position that you’re in like no other nation.”

“While some nations might step on you and say ‘hey, you’re gonna stay like that,’ or have the classism, we don’t,” he continued.

“What she’s saying about ‘this nation is horrible,’ basically saying ‘this nation is full of racists’ and I should be stupid enough to believe that when I’m sitting right here and see people who are nice of all colors that do things and work together, and this fool wants to take us back to a time when everybody hated each other,” he added.

This patriotic man hit the nail on the head with his response.

It’d be great if the so-called intellectuals and pundits who pontificate on all manner of America and America’s history would take note of this man’s answer and spend some time expounding on how our nation has always been great, and despite obvious and admitted shortcomings, we have continued to move past those issues and continue to make our nation greater all the time.

NATO Dog Fight: Trump Takes NATO to Task and Wins Again

NATO Dog Fight: Trump Takes NATO to Task and Wins Again

President Trump came, he punched, and he drove his point home. NATO will never be the same after Trump challenged the Organization to its core and read it the riot act by delivering an ultimatum.

Following his “America First” philosophy to make decisions based on the USA and not other foreign interests or multilateral concerns, Trump went to Brussels with both fists swinging.

At a breakfast meeting with NATO Secretary General, Stoltenberg, who was previously Prime Minister of Norway, Trump laid down the law and reinforced his main point: pay up or shut up.

Only 5 of the 29 NATO allies are meeting their pledges of 2 % of GDP on defense spending. Germany is the worst culprit and is in effect, “taking the American taxpayer for a ride”, Trump said. Trump went one-step father saying Germany was a “captive” to Russia’s oil and gas pipeline and was spending billions on an unreliable source from the very adversary NATO exists to deter, namely: Russia. In a single exchange Trump won the war. He got them off guard and hit right between the eyes. It was a knockout punch.

All the MSM said Trump got it wrong, his figures were inflated or NATO gives the US other benefits, but they missed the whole point. Trump suckered punched the German juggernaut and their Chancellor; Mrs. Merkel and showed Germany’s paucity and hypocrisy in one fell swoop.

The formal NATO meetings were no less contentious. Trump had a series of bilateral meetings and changed the whole agenda to return on the final day to his major topic, burden sharing. His efforts seemed to work. He strong-armed the entire cabal to admit they needed to do more and immediately. Not sufficient, Trump said in his news conference they should be paying 4 % of their GDP if they want a real defense.

Trump in effect singlehandedly told our allies if they want defense they have to pay for it. We are not their piggy bank. The US has your back but needs to see a serious commitment: or else. No other President since Harry S. Truman started NATO in 1947 has had the “balls” to stand up and make the American case so forcefully.

Trump did not capitulate.

As a result NATO will be more focused, more deliberate, well funded and America and Americans can be proud. The hell with diplomacy spoke Trump—it hasn’t worked for decades so it was time to try something new. America is leading the world again after a long hiatus and an apology tour during the last eight years. Leadership means having the courage to lead. Trump gave a two-day seminar on leading to the NATO heads of state. Some didn’t like it. Tough love is what they got and he is watching budgets for 2019—the result will be duly noted and already the cash registers are ringing. Those that don’t meet the pledge will be cut out.
