Bad news for Dems: Trump tax cuts have led to increased tax revenue

Democrats developed a sudden new concern with the size of budget deficits – something that failed to trouble them as Barack Obama doubled the national debt in just eight years – when President Trump’s tax cuts were first proposed.  Nancy Pelosi assured us, “[T]his thing will explode the deficit.”

And the Congressional Budget Office, sticking to obviously incorrect static model thinking – i.e., that people don’t change their behavior when tax rates change – produced an estimate that the deficit would rise from $665 billion to $804 billion.

Now, data are out showing that, just as the Laffer Curve predicts, a reduction in tax rates produced such an increase on economic activity that tax revenues increased.

Investor’s Business Daily writes:

The latest monthly budget report from the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office finds that revenues from federal income taxes were $76 billion higher in the first half of this year, compared with the first half of 2017.  That’s a 9% jump, even though the lower income tax withholding schedules went into effect in February.

The CBO says the gain “largely reflects increases in wages and salaries.”

For the fiscal year as a whole – which started last October – all federal revenues are up by $31 billion.  That’s a 1.2% in increase over last year, the CBO says.

The Treasury Department, which issues a separate monthly report, says it expects federal revenues will continue to exceed last year’s for the rest of the 2018 fiscal year.

The mainstream media are not going to point this out, but fortunately, President Trump is not in the least bit shy about pointing out his successes via Twitter and in public speeches.  He has a ripe target here, and he can quote Pelosi and the rest offering phony warnings, and make the point that their concerns about confirming Brett Kavanaugh are equally fatuous.

Isn’t it amazing how often good news for Americans is bad news for Dems?

WaPo exposé discovers game-changing fact about Brett Kavanaugh: He bought some baseball tickets

A serious “investigative report” by the serious Washington Post on Thursday brought to light a shocking fact about Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh: he bought some baseball tickets for his friends on his personal credit cards, then later paid off the debts when his friends reimbursed him.

The report kicks off by stating Kavanaugh “incurred tens of thousands of dollars of credit card debt buying baseball tickets over the past decade and at times reported liabilities that could have exceeded the value of his cash accounts and investment assets.”

What was the debt?

The information came from financial disclosures and information provided by the White House, according to the report.

Kavanaugh reported in 2016 that he had “$60,000 and $200,000 in debt” from three credit cards and a loan. Each credit card had between “$15,000 and $50,000 in debt, and a Thrift Savings Plan loan was between $15,000 and $50,000.”

Part of the debt is linked to Washington Nationals season tickets and tickets for baseball playoff games that Kavanaugh bought for himself and friends. Other costs were related to home improvements, White House spokesman Raj Shah told the Washington Post.

Nationals season ticket packages can vary depending on their location in the stadium, the report notes. Seats near the dugout can sell for as much as $6,000 each for an 81-game season package.

Kavanaugh’s friends reportedly reimbursed him for “their share of the baseball tickets,” and the judge has “since stopped purchasing the season tickets.”

The report noted that Shah did not provide the friends’ names, nor additional details about the tickets.

The information falls under the article’s headline: “Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh piled up credit card debt by purchasing Nationals tickets, White House says.”

What did it conclude?

The story goes on to state that filings show the ticket purchases were made at the end of 2016 and paid off early the next year. In 2017, the credit card debts and loan “were either paid off or fell below the reporting requirements,” according to the report.

“He did not carry that kind of debt year over year,” Shah told the Washington Post.

Next, the article examines Kavanaugh’s reportable assets of between $15,000 to $65,000. That, the Washington Post reports, puts him “at the bottom of the financial ranking of justices, most of whom list well over $1 million in assets.”

Still, Kavanaugh “has assets of nearly $1 million between the equity in his home and his retirement account,” according to the report.

Shah also told the Washington Post that the Kavanaughs have no debt beyond their home mortgage.

Kavanaugh has also worked in the public sector and did not build his wealth through private practice, the report states.

“Judge Kavanaugh is a brilliant jurist who has dedicated his life to public service,” Shah said.

President Donald Trump announced Monday that Kavanaugh is the Supreme Court nominee for Justice Anthony Kennedy’s seat.

While it is anyone’s guess how Senators will react to these “shocking” revelations, at least one Republican senator mocked the report and gave it all the gravity it is due:

Feel Good Story: Families Separated In US Deported And Reunited In Guatemala

That is how the system is supposed to work.

Donelda Pulex stepped off the airplane into the sun, clutching her 5-year-old daughter’s hand and burst into heaving sobs. Fourteen-year-old Hermelindo Juarez hid his face as his father comforted him. Efildo Daniel Vasquez walked cautiously behind his 8-year-old son.

Quiet, confused and exhausted, 11 families who had been detained and separated after they were caught crossing the U.S. border illegally returned home Tuesday to Guatemala aboard a U.S. government-chartered flight that read “World Atlantic.”

Greeted by first lady Patricia Marroquin, they lined up on the tarmac, shuffling – their shoelaces had been taken as a security precaution. U.S. immigration officials handed over paperwork in manila envelopes to Guatemalan officials. The immigrants walked single-file into a squat gray building at the country’s military base to be processed back into their country, along with dozens of others also deported.

Chartered flights full of deportees from the United States regularly arrive in the Central American country, but Tuesday’s flight was among the first containing families separated at the border under President Donald Trump’s contentious zero tolerance policy. More than 2,300 children were separated from their families before a June 20 order stopping the practice.

While some Central American migrants say they were fleeing to protect their families from severe violence, parents who spoke with The Associated Press said they made the difficult, dangerous journey to the U.S. for a better life. They were seeking a chance at a steady job or a better education for their children.

They didn’t know they’d be separated from their kids under the policy that criminally prosecuted anyone caught crossing the border illegally. Trump administration officials had said the policy was necessary to deter a growing number of families from Central America who were crossing illegally. But the president backed off following a national and international uproar, ordering an end to the separations on June 20.

While frustrated that their difficult journeys had ended in failure, the families were relieved their ordeals were over.

Pulex said she spent nearly two months apart from her daughter, waiting in an El Paso, Texas, detention center, first for the resolution of her criminal case and later for deportation proceedings.

“It was a great torment,” she said, wiping tears away. “I did not know if I would ever see my daughter again. I thought she was taken from me forever.” Her little girl, Marelyn, dressed in a pristine white sweater and blue chiffon skirt, said she spoke to her mother by phone from a foster care home in Michigan.

“My mother, she was so sad. She would cry for me, and I would tell her, Mami, everything is OK, I am OK. I will see you soon,” the little girl said. She said the people who cared for her were kind, and treated her well, but she missed her mother.

Watch Federal Agents Take Down Radicals With Pepper Balls When They Get Violent

Gotta love radical beatdown videos. Listen to them wail, “Look what your government is doing!” Yeah, it’s locking up violent radicals and I love it.

Via BPR:

Radical left-wing protesters in Portland, Oregon, proved to be no match for federal officers determined to maintain law and order.

Militant extremists reportedly hurled rocks — and vulgar insults — as some tried to block a driveway at an U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility. Federal police countered by hurling traditional tools of the trade, namely pepper spray and pepper balls, to restore order, according to KOIN.

Tensions boiled over and eight protesters were arrested after they tried to prevent a vehicle they believed was transporting an illegal immigrant from leaving the facility, KOIN reported.

When officers decided to engage, the inept protesters folded like a cheap lawn chair.

CNN Reporter Gleeful About English Anti-Trump Protests

The establishment media couldn’t stump the Trump, the US politicians couldn’t derail the Donald’s campaign, and the purple-haired feminists couldn’t put a chink in his armor with all that screaming. Still there is one last hope. The petty pranksters and irreverent humorists in the UK have sworn to give the U.S. president the “trolling of a lifetime.”

Should we start waving the white flag now, or wait until we’ve witnessed the firepower of their fully armed and operational Trump baby blimp?

Rob Crilly, a British reporter living in New York and working for CNN, wrote a little piece for the news outlet on Wednesday morning, claiming that when Trump gets to the UK, he will be in for a rude awakening. Quite gleeful about the prospect of making fun of a foreign world leader, Crilly said that this was to be the ultimate opportunity to take all the frustrations over their own failing state, and channel it into unbridled heckling towards the U.S. president.

Um, isn’t that the exact description of a temper tantrum?

Crilly wrote, “The British government is in crisis, the Prime Minister is losing ministers on what feels like a daily basis and the country riven by arguments about how — or even whether — to leave the European Union.”

Yes, it has clearly been a troubling situation for Great Britain as of late. Still, the best idea this CNN reporter can come up with is to shout at and verbally harass the man who has actually found solutions for his nation’s problems. Not to mention, he was also a vocal advocate for the British people and their Brexit vote.

“What better time to turn our collective angst outwards, with the delicious distraction of a world leader more ridiculous than our own sorry bunch?”

How adult.

“There will be no escape,” Crilly wrote. “Even if Trump manages to break his TV habit and even if his schedule has been carefully arranged to minimize time in London, he will be unable to miss the jibes.”

Quite right. Donald may see the carefully planned insults and effete mockery from a snobby citizenry, but did all the English people forget that Donald Trump has become accustomed to this on a minute-by-minute basis? They have chosen the least effective weapon against the current president, and considering the sorry state of their own affairs, will proceed to make themselves look like even bigger idiots on the world stage.

Crilly, justifying his petulant anger, continued, “Trump is the perfect outlet, representing as he does the qualities that so many of us associate with Americans. He’s loud, wealthy and utterly lacking in any sort of class. He is a throwback to the line popular about Yank soldiers in Britain during World War Two: “Oversexed, overpaid and over here.”

Ah yes, the classic derogatory line about the Yanks. Either way, the US has gone through great perils to aid the British people, and regardless of how Brits welcome our president, we will continue to provide our support.

Louie Gohmert to Strzok: Did you look as innocently at your wife while lying about Lisa Page as you look at us?

If you’re gonna grandstand, might as well go all out, I guess:

My pal Karl sums up that exchange in one tweet:

It’s not just that. The elephant in the room here is enormous. The Trump Party is suddenly lecturing other people about adulterers lacking credibility? What?

There was a nice mix of views at the hearing this afternoon. On the one hand, you had moron Democrats ready to canonize Strzok because he came out swinging at Gowdy and Goodlatte this morning:

“This guy was removed by Mueller and harshly criticized by the IG, and yet because Republicans are attacking him he must be made into a hero?” wondered Aaron Blake. Indeed. It’s the Comey playbook. There’s no sin against propriety, even one that wounds Democratic presidential chances grievously, that can’t be absolved by disliking Republicans strongly enough. I don’t know if Strzok conceived of that as a deliberate strategy in showing defiance this morning, expecting correctly that Democrats would line up behind him, or if he just feels defiant and was intent on expressing that. But it’s worked out for him today. He was on an island politically before and he has a cheering section now.

On the other hand, the spectacle of Darrell Issa making Strzok read his texts aloud raised an obvious question:

What sort of texts about Trump are Washington Republicans hiding? Because I kind of suspect they’d make Strzok’s texts about POTUS look like a Breitbart valentine. Or, better yet, what sort of texts about Mueller do the pro-Trumpers like Gohmert have on their phones? The accusation against Strzok, after all, is that his private political opinions and his professional ethics are inseparable; the former inevitably influence the latter. If that’s true, why isn’t it fair to assume that Gohmert’s private opinions about Mueller are corrupting his oversight conduct by turning him into a water-carrier for Trump? Right, Gohmert’s a partisan politician whereas Strzok’s an officer of the law, but (a) cops are allowed to have partisan preferences as citizens and (b) politicians aren’t supposed to be partisans when they have their oversight hats on. If we’re worried about corruption in law enforcement and oversight of law enforcement, shouldn’t we see everyone’s texts?

Boston City Council considers measure to let noncitizens vote

Boston’s City Council is holding a hearing on Tuesday to consider giving noncitizen legal residents the right to vote in municipal elections. Supporters argue that this would make elections in the city more inclusive.

Here’s what you need to know

This new legislation would apply only to noncitizen legal residents, including visa holders, legal permanent residents, anyone with temporary protected status, and Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipients. These immigrants would be allowed to vote only in municipal elections. Noncitizens are still barred from voting in federal elections under federal law.

The hearing was requested in January by City Council President Andrea Campbell. Campbell’s request for the hearing stated, “The purpose of our local government, including the Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Advancement, is to ‘strengthen the ability of diverse, cultural, and linguistic communities to play an active role in the economic, civic, social and cultural life of the City of Boston.’”

According to a U.S. Census Bureau survey in 2015, these residents make up  28 percent of Boston’s roughly 673,000 residents. Noncitizen residents of Boston also reportedly paid $116 million in state and local taxes.

The hearing will be at 3 p.m. ET on Tuesday.

Has another city in the country tried to do this?

In August 2017, College Park, Maryland, debated a similar measure. That measure ultimately failed. It managed to get a majority vote, but not the supermajority six-out-of-nine council members required for it to become law. Ten municipalities in Maryland currently allow noncitizens the right to vote in local elections.

Other cities across the country have tried similar measures unsuccessfully. In November, San Francisco voters approved a proposition that will allow noncitizen parents and guardians to vote in school board elections. However, this measure is specifically restricted to this subset of noncitizen adults and applies only to the school board elections.

If Boston does pass this proposal, it would be the first city to successfully do so for all citywide elections.

SYRUP OVER KETCHUP: IHOb Changing Back To IHOP

It was inevitable.
The International House of Pancakes (IHOP), which flirted briefly with changing its name to the International House of Burgers (IHOb), a name-change that elicited groans from breakfast-lovers everywhere, has seen the error of its ways, announcing on Monday that it had reverted back to its original name.
