The reason for the season: Happy Independence Day!

As my annual public service reminder of the reason for the season, I’m reprinting the Declaration of Independence in its entirety. The transcription comes via the National Archives.

IN CONGRESS, July 4, 1776.

The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen united States of America,

When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.–That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, –That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.–Such has been the patient sufferance of these Colonies; and such is now the necessity which constrains them to alter their former Systems of Government. The history of the present King of Great Britain is a history of repeated injuries and usurpations, all having in direct object the establishment of an absolute Tyranny over these States. To prove this, let Facts be submitted to a candid world.

He has refused his Assent to Laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public good.

He has forbidden his Governors to pass Laws of immediate and pressing importance, unless suspended in their operation till his Assent should be obtained; and when so suspended, he has utterly neglected to attend to them.

He has refused to pass other Laws for the accommodation of large districts of people, unless those people would relinquish the right of Representation in the Legislature, a right inestimable to them and formidable to tyrants only.

He has called together legislative bodies at places unusual, uncomfortable, and distant from the depository of their public Records, for the sole purpose of fatiguing them into compliance with his measures.

He has dissolved Representative Houses repeatedly, for opposing with manly firmness his invasions on the rights of the people.

He has refused for a long time, after such dissolutions, to cause others to be elected; whereby the Legislative powers, incapable of Annihilation, have returned to the People at large for their exercise; the State remaining in the mean time exposed to all the dangers of invasion from without, and convulsions within.

He has endeavoured to prevent the population of these States; for that purpose obstructing the Laws for Naturalization of Foreigners; refusing to pass others to encourage their migrations hither, and raising the conditions of new Appropriations of Lands.

He has obstructed the Administration of Justice, by refusing his Assent to Laws for establishing Judiciary powers.

He has made Judges dependent on his Will alone, for the tenure of their offices, and the amount and payment of their salaries.

He has erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harrass our people, and eat out their substance.

He has kept among us, in times of peace, Standing Armies without the Consent of our legislatures.

He has affected to render the Military independent of and superior to the Civil power.

He has combined with others to subject us to a jurisdiction foreign to our constitution, and unacknowledged by our laws; giving his Assent to their Acts of pretended Legislation:

For Quartering large bodies of armed troops among us:

For protecting them, by a mock Trial, from punishment for any Murders which they should commit on the Inhabitants of these States:

For cutting off our Trade with all parts of the world:

He is at this time transporting large Armies of foreign Mercenaries to compleat the works of death, desolation and tyranny, already begun with circumstances of Cruelty & perfidy scarcely paralleled in the most barbarous ages, and totally unworthy the Head of a civilized nation.

He has constrained our fellow Citizens taken Captive on the high Seas to bear Arms against their Country, to become the executioners of their friends and Brethren, or to fall themselves by their Hands.

He has excited domestic insurrections amongst us, and has endeavoured to bring on the inhabitants of our frontiers, the merciless Indian Savages, whose known rule of warfare, is an undistinguished destruction of all ages, sexes and conditions.

In every stage of these Oppressions We have Petitioned for Redress in the most humble terms: Our repeated Petitions have been answered only by repeated injury. A Prince whose character is thus marked by every act which may define a Tyrant, is unfit to be the ruler of a free people.

Nor have We been wanting in attentions to our Brittish brethren. We have warned them from time to time of attempts by their legislature to extend an unwarrantable jurisdiction over us. We have reminded them of the circumstances of our emigration and settlement here. We have appealed to their native justice and magnanimity, and we have conjured them by the ties of our common kindred to disavow these usurpations, which, would inevitably interrupt our connections and correspondence. They too have been deaf to the voice of justice and of consanguinity. We must, therefore, acquiesce in the necessity, which denounces our Separation, and hold them, as we hold the rest of mankind, Enemies in War, in Peace Friends.

We, therefore, the Representatives of the united States of America, in General Congress, Assembled, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world for the rectitude of our intentions, do, in the Name, and by Authority of the good People of these Colonies, solemnly publish and declare, That these United Colonies are, and of Right ought to be Free and Independent States; that they are Absolved from all Allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain, is and ought to be totally dissolved; and that as Free and Independent States, they have full Power to levy War, conclude Peace, contract Alliances, establish Commerce, and to do all other Acts and Things which Independent States may of right do. Illegal Immigrants, Palestinian Refugees, and Their Liberal Cheerleaders: The Startling Similarities

The Democrat, left-wing media, and progressive activists’ current freak-out over what is at least a decade-long crisis on our southern border is not just hypocritical.  Yes, these same individuals taking to the streets in ugly mobs and threatening Trump administration officials and their families were silent when children entering the country illegally were detained under Obama.  In fact, in 2014, after visiting a detention center housing migrant children, Nancy Pelosi asserted that the issue should not be politicized, clearly fearing the poor optics.


But the progressive reaction to the migrant issue reflects much more than liberal hypocrisy.  It mirrors the liberal response to, and furthering of, inflammatory and intentionally misleading narratives regarding Palestinian refugees.  Both crises represent the politicization of cultural and ethnic tragedies that seek to blame a strong horse for the wrongs of the true perpetrators of crimes against humanity. And both crises serve as winning strategies for leftist political operatives seeking absolute power.



Palestinians are portrayed as victims of an all-powerful government infringing on their human rights, notwithstanding their culpability and that of their “elected” leaders. Similarly, Democrats are using illegal immigrants as tools to demonize Republicans, intentionally fueling their ongoing war against conservatives with the specific goal of influencing the midterm elections. 


Arab governments have exploited Palestinians for decades in their never-ending quest to annihilate Israel.  That conflict could have ended decades ago, yet Palestinian representatives declined Israel’s numerous offers of a peaceful two-state solution.  Democrats similarly purposely avoided numerous opportunities for immigration reform including when they controlled both houses of Congress and the White House under Obama. 


Instead, Democrats nationalized one-sixth of the U.S. economy via Obamacare, while illegal immigrant children languished in prison-like camps.  They opted to “ink” a horrific agreement with Iran allowing that terrorist-sponsoring tyrannical regime to develop nuclear weapons while turning a blind eye to our porous border that permits the infiltration of Islamic terrorists and MS-13 gang members.


How to explain this irrationality?  Aside from political motivations, there are enormous economic benefits to using unwitting victims in both of these dishonest games. 


Since its formation in 1949, the United Nations Relief Works Agency (UNRWA), mandated with providing humanitarian aid to Palestinian refugees, has grown into a bureaucratic monstrosity that sucks money from donor nations to feed its 35,000 mostly Palestinian employees.  It supports Palestinian terrorism through coordination with Hamas, indoctrinates Palestinian children to commit jihad against Jews, and allows its facilities to serve as weapons depots.  But hey, tens of thousands of Arabs are employed because of it – so there’s that.


Palestinians are the only refugees with their own UN agency. That agency is the only refugee organization that does not work for integration, resettlement and assimilation of its refugees into host countries.  Furthermore, UNRWA permits descendants of refugees to inherit the refugee status, resulting in the number of refugees under its mandate and control increasing from 750,000 in 1950 to over 5,000,000 today.  With an annual budget exceeding $1.2 billion, this is what we call big business. 


Our own government is now feeding a similar conglomerate in states across the country.  Southwest Key Inc., a Texas not-for-profit, received half a billion dollars this year to house migrant children.  It has received $1.5 billion over the past decade for the “Unaccompanied Alien Children Program.” The CEO of Southwest earned almost $1.5 million in total compensation in 2016 while his wife earned almost $300,000 as its VP in 2015. This is how government bureaucracies form and welfare programs are established. Genies are not easily forced back into their bottles.


Bleeding hearts bemoan the migrant children, ignore their crimes and accompanying health issues, and champion the facilities in which the children are housed.  In Westchester County, the feds have set up migrant housing in which most Americans could only dream of living.  Gyms replete with weight rooms and indoor swimming pools, cell phones, medical care, and top-notch education are some of the amenities. 


Both of these crises are portrayed as atrocities with no end. Liberals perpetuate the narratives. Just as many Latin American countries do not wish to rectify their economic, social, and political calamities leaving citizens few choices but to attempt an escape, Arab countries and Palestinian leaders do not wish to address the struggles facing Palestinians.


Deported illegals return again and again until finally jailed for serious crimes; liberals form sanctuary cities to protect them.  Palestinian refugees seek a right of return while blowing up buses and restaurants; the UN passes resolutions condemning the Jews. Trump suggests building a wall; he is labeled a tyrant. Netanyahu builds a fence; he is accused of running an apartheid state. Both leaders strive to protect their citizens. Liberals wish to perpetuate victim classes as a means to attain power.


While there are hopes that the U.S. will defund UNRWA, European nations would surely make up the loss.  Similarly, if the government were to cut funding for immigrant welfare programs, liberals would fill the void. For instance, the Refugee and Immigrant Center for Education and Legal Services received $18 million in contributions from a Facebook campaign. The group plans to use the money “to staff up — hiring many more attorneys, social workers and legal assistants.”


Sounds a lot like the way UNRWA expanded.  Liberals feed the beast without any attempt to slay the dragon. 


The media and fake news also help inflame the public which keeps the money flowing and the issues front and center while continuing the demonization of both Israel and Republicans.   Pallywood has found great success as Arabs effectively feed a false narrative to a complicit media influencing public opinion.  The terrorists’ effectiveness in using #fakenews to portray the Palestinians as victims of unwarranted, “disproportionate” Israeli aggression is due in large part to liberals who care more about appeasing their own sense of fairness than they do about the truth.  The duplicitous media faithfully regurgitate the lies fed to them by the terrorists. 


Likewise, news outlets across the country consistently run photos and stories that fit their bleeding-heart, false narratives.  Time Magazine’s recent cover photo exemplifies the media’s deviousness as AT’s Rick Moran explains:


They called it a “photo illustration.” But the montage was not marked as such, leading anyone who saw the cover to think that Trump was there and the little girl was crying because her mother was taken away by heartless ICE agents. “Photo illustrations” are reminiscent of propaganda tactics used by Joseph Goebbels. The Nazi propaganda whiz would marry two images – a Jew and a rat, for example – to impart an unmistakable message.


That too, was fake but accurate according to Nazi doctrine.


Which leads to another similarity between the two issues – the ludicrous use of Hitler and Nazi comparisons. Both Palestinians and their supporters and Democrats and leftists love comparing Netanyahu and Trump to Hitler, Israeli Jews and Republicans to Nazis.  This is not only immoral; it cheapens the memory of those who died in the Holocaust and WWII.  There is no sense of truth or decency for the extremists pushing these vile agendas.


I recently met a co-founder of Center Left Radio, which bills itself as “the progressive voice of hope, politics and jazz,” an internet station that is intended to appeal “to listeners’ hearts and minds.” We discussed the immigrant crisis and, when I shared with him that many of the heart-wrenching photos in the news were actually taken in 2014 under Obama, he would have none of it.  It did not fit his narrative; his listeners’ minds, just as his own, could not grasp the reality. 


It is disheartening that so many in the West cannot handle the truth.  When Trump asks why everyone screaming about the poor immigrant children ignores the children murdered by MS-13 gang members, liberals have no response.  When the UN, Arab nations, and Western progressives single out Israel for demonization while ignoring the untold numbers of innocent Israeli civilians murdered in terrorist attacks, they fail to recognize this as blatant anti-Semitism.  Unlike his predecessor, who never found an issue unworthy of an executive order (except this one), Trump signs an executive order halting the separation of children from parents and Democrats continue demonizing him while calling for the abolition of ICE. Netanyahu makes overtures for peace including halting settlement construction and Western media’s use of Pallywood propaganda continues its vilification of him. 


The Palestinians have their Nakba; the Democrats have their Resistance. For the Palestinians, 1967 was the beginning of a tale that they have successfully spun, a welfare state in the form of UNRWA that indirectly funds their terrorism, and an excuse to commit jihad on the Jewish people.  Palestinian leaders, with the help of UNRWA textbooks and educators, incite violence daily in the name of the Nakba.


For Democrats and leftists, 2016 was a death knell and an excuse to call for violence, uncivil disobedience, impeachment, and the usurpation of the laws of our Constitutional democracy.  Obama and his minions are leading the charge in the Resistance that is tearing our country apart.


For both, innocent people are used as pawns in order to further dangerous agendas intended to keep the bad guys in power.

Results Matter: PRESIDENT TRUMP Tops Obama in Approval Numbers at Same Point in His Presidency

President Trump’s approval rating on his second Independence Day is at 48% with likely voters.

And after a month of anti-ICE protests by Democrats President Trump jumped 10 points with Hispanics in the recent Harris-Harvard poll.

And that is with 90% negative coverage from the far left mainstream media.

On Barack Obama’s second Independence Day — despite a fawning media — his approval rating was only at 45%.

It comes down to results.
President Trump is delivering on promises.

Since President Trump’s election the DOW daily closing stock market average has risen as much as 44%. (On November 9th the DOW closed at 18,332 – in January the DOW reached heights of over 26,500.).

On February 28th, 2017, President Trump matched President Reagan’s 1987 record for the most continuous closing high trading days when the DOW reached a new high for its 12th day in a row!

Under President Trump the DOW set the record for the fastest 500 point increase between major milestones when it reached 26,000 on January 17th. It only took 6 days to increase 500 points from 25,500.  As a matter of fact, since President Trump’s election the DOW has set records for the fastest 500, 1000, 2000, 3000, 4000, 5000, 6000 and 7000 point increases in the DOW’s history!

2017 was the best year ever for the DOW. It increased more points than ever in its history (4,956) and it reached more all-time highs (71) than any year in history!

Every US stock index has reached all-time highs during the Trump Presidency.  The Russell 2000 is currently only 7 points from the highest levels ever (1,603 on May 10, 2018 and record is 1,610 in January 2018).

And President Trump’s foreign policy is also seeing results.

One new Mexican president. Dozens of new reasons to build the wall.

In Mexico, it is often impolite to tell someone ‘No.’  If you want to spare someone’s feelings, many people say ‘Maybe.’


Everyone knows that means ‘No.’



Mexico stopped worrying about American feelings long ago. Among the fashionable public officials and academics, scorn has been the ruling emotion for decades. And we see that more recently in the last week’s elections.


Pretending otherwise is just too much work in Mexico today. The new President declares he is a socialist, but he will be hard pressed to show how his new socialist policies are any different than the old socialist policies that govern so many parts of Mexican life. That’s what we said about Venezuela, come to think of it.


And those who predict their ‘Fill in Blank’ Latin American country has finally bottomed out and is now turning around are often, even invariably, wrong.


But at least admitting they are socialists has the added benefit of sticking a finger in the eye of their terrible neighbors to the North — whom everyone knows ruined Mexico by stealing a good chunk of the country in 1848.


Anyone who reads the daily papers in Mexico is reminded of that 157-year old treaty every day: for most of the country, the national slogan/curse remains “Mexico, so far from God, so close to the United States.” We can even hear it today from Mexican nationals and their descendants in the U.S. who glorify La Raza at the expense of their adopted country.


Oh, and by the way, Americans are still waiting for any kind of public display of support for those who died on 9/11. Mexicans largely ignored it, when they were not supporting it behind closed doors at their local universities.


But the truly troubling pronouncements out of Mexico City are even easier to find. The newly elected president Andres Lopez-Obrador was gleeful during the election when he told his compadres they should all move to America, illegally. His encouragement along with his pro-poverty policies will set the stage for another tsunami of illegal immigration.


Then members of Lopez-Obrador’s cabinet-in-waiting started talking about the war on drug cartels and why should Mexico do America’s dirty work for them.


The first statement does not need much interpretation, other than the obvious, but often ignored: the new President of Mexico is encouraging his countrymen to invade the United States. Not with guns and soldiers, but with campesinos and huaraches.


It’s a bitter and hostile act that we should treat as such.


The new talk about amnesty for drug dealers is every crazier: This is just an admission of what anyone who cares to already knows: Mexico is run by a collection of drug cartels and other violent outlaws.  This collection of criminals has killed thousands of public officials, police and reporters — all in the name of preserving a criminal status quo that no one even feels like pretending does not exist anymore. They even write songs glorifying them.


They get what they want, when they want it.


And that is why we cannot build the Coulter/Trump Border Wall fast enough, tall enough, and proudly enough.


In addition to writing scintillating best sellers about black violence in America, good ol’ Colin Flaherty also covered Mexico for several newspapers and radio stations in San Diego, back in the day.

This man makes it his life goal to restore the gravestones of veterans and tell their stories

When Andrew Lumish, a cleaning company owner, visited a cemetery near Tampa, Florida five years ago, he knew that something was wrong. Gravestones belonging to veterans were blackened and covered with years of neglect. He also knew that he had the skill set to help keep them from being forgotten.

Here’s what you need to know

Lumish, who calls himself the “good cemeterian,” learned how to properly clean and restore gravestones without damaging them. After getting permission from the cemetery, he begins his work. His process requires a specific D/2 biological solution so that he won’t accidentally end up ruining the stone — and lots of time.

“A monument restoration has to be done by hand, you cannot use a pressure washer…so a monument will take minimally two months to restore and some take in excess of a year,” Lumish told Fox News. He added, “I won’t reveal a restoration until it’s reached its pinnacle and peak and it’s ready to be shown.”

Once a gravestone is cleaned, Lumish takes a picture of it, and posts the before and after pictures on social media. He also includes a brief story about the veteran buried at that gravesite. Lumish explained:

The individuals that we honor didn’t consider themselves heroes, they didn’t toot their own horn or pat themselves on the back—we’re doing it now…we don’t only talk about their service, we talk about their lives, from the day they were born until their last day on earth. We are delving into that person’s life so that we can respectfully tell what that person went through…I don’t want anyone to be forgotten.”

So far, Lumish has managed to restore the grave markers of around 1,500 veterans.

What else?

When Lumish cleans these gravestones, he doesn’t only think about the veterans whose legacy he is preserving. He is also doing this for a veteran he knew personally and lost. Lumish’s friend Chris Scala was a 12-year U.S. Air Force veteran who committed suicide after a battle with PTSD. According to the Department of Veterans Affairs, veterans are at a 22 percent higher risk of suicide than other American adults.

“We honor the past, but I also always honor him,” Lumish said, referencing Scala.  “I always think of him.”

Polls: No, of course Americans don’t want to abolish ICE

“Abolish ICE” isn’t a solution, argues my colleague Ed Morrissey at the Daily Beast today, it’s a slogan. Indeed, and that’s being generous. It started as a Twitter hashtag, per HuffPost. As the phrase started showing up more online, desperate opportunists like Kirsten Gillibrand who are looking for an angle to shore up their left flank in the 2020 primaries glommed onto it. Just like that, the hashtag #AbolishICE had become the slogan “Abolish ICE,” which had in turn become a semi-serious policy proposed by a semi-serious U.S. senator. And once it did, other supposedly serious 2020 contenders had to keep pace with Gillibrand by proposing it too.

Suddenly Democrats have a problem. No one to the right of the DSA thinks “abolish ICE” will help claw back Rust Belt voters who flipped from Obama to Trump in the last election, but because it’s gone from zero to “litmus test” overnight with Gillibrand’s and Warren’s help, the party leadership can only run so far from the idea without getting into trouble. Progressive open-borders shills are excited at having made inroads into the U.S. Senate with their idea; at a minimum, lip service will need to be paid to it for the next two years. How many swing voters will that alienate? Dem leaders are thinking about it:

“I think the focus should be on President Trump’s hard-line immigration policies, and not on ICE,” Texas Rep. Henry Cuellar, a relatively moderate Democrat, told BuzzFeed News on Monday. He noted the agency is just in charge of enforcing the administration’s policies, and said the calls to abolish ICE are “dangerously misguided.”…

“We need border security, OK? I’ve heard there’s some people out there saying we should get rid of ICE. That’s kind of like Republicans saying we should get rid of the IRS,” Washington Rep. Adam Smith, the ranking member of the House Armed Services Committee, told reporters after last week’s elections. “We need immigration enforcement, though not like this. ICE does not have to do what President Trump is telling them to do.”

If there was any chance of putting the genie back in the bottle, it evaporated when Joe Crowley lost his primary to socialist wunderkind Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who’s also called for abolishing ICE. Progressives have spent two years grumbling that “Bernie would have won,” their rebuke to the centrist Dems who warned them during the 2016 primaries that Sanders couldn’t get elected only to find that, ah, Hillary couldn’t get elected either. The left is done being told that their ideas can’t succeed electorally. Ocasio-Cortez’s win reinforces that belief. How can “abolish ICE” be an electoral loser when she just shocked the world?

Reality check: Outside deep-blue districts, it’s a loser. Via HuffPost and YouGov:

Overall, across the total population, “abolish ICE” sits at 21/44 — and that’s the more encouraging of the two recent polls for progressives. The other outfit to poll this question, Harvard-Harris, found trainwreck numbers for liberals when it asked if ICE should be disbanded:

Three-quarters of Republicans and a solid majority of Democrats oppose disbanding the agency. How we reconcile that with the far more tepid numbers in HuffPost’s poll, I don’t know. The questions asked by the two pollsters are similar enough that the wording shouldn’t affect the result dramatically. It’s tempting to wonder whether the recent push on the left to abolish ICE has begun to soften opposition among Democrats and that’s now showing up in the HuffPost data, but there’s a logical problem there — the Harvard-Harris poll was conducted a few days after HuffPost’s was. If anything, opposition to the idea is growing, even among Dems. Maybe the spotlight on “abolish ICE” has already begun to backfire.

Progressives won’t give up, though. There’s no reason to. Their best-case scenario is that “abolish ICE” continues to catch on among 2020 contenders, eventually becoming orthodoxy among prospective nominees, in which case slowly but surely it’ll become orthodoxy among Democratic voters too. If the HuffPost numbers above are accurate, there are already a plurality of Democrats in favor of the idea. The worst-case scenario is that Gillibrand, Warren, and the rest start to inch away from it when the polling doesn’t soften, although even then something useful will have come out of it for lefties. The “abolish ICE” fad will have reminded the party’s next leaders that they have no room to move right on immigration in the general election. With constant leftward pressure towards open borders, the eventual nominee will either have to move left as well or, at most, stand firm on the very amnesty-friendly ground that the party currently occupies. Republicans should be familiar with this dynamic: By demanding smaller government when you have no expectation of getting it, you at least make it more politically painful for congressional GOPers to *expand* government. In theory. Emphasis on “in theory.”

Here are Amy Klobuchar and Tammy Duckworth from this past weekend, each trying to tamp down the “abolish ICE” flames before the party’s 2018 and 2020 hopes start catching on fire. A question asked by Ed and many others this past week: Why not just overhaul ICE? If you don’t like the agency’s mandate or its tactics, write some new rules for how it should operate. The answer is that that wouldn’t adequately capture the left’s contempt for immigration enforcement and, really, wouldn’t achieve what it wants to achieve. It may be that there are moderate Dems who really do want immigration enforcement but nonetheless support abolishing ICE because they believe the agency’s culture will make it impossible for it to change how it operates. But most of the “abolish ICE” vanguard doesn’t want enforcement at all, I think, certainly not against illegals with no history of violent crime. (If that sounds radical to you, recall that it was essentially Hillary Clinton’s position.) “Abolish ICE” is a catchier version of “abolish enforcement” and most Americans seem to recognize it as such. That’s why the polling is what it is.
