F.E. Warren Air Force Base Removes Bible From POW/MIA Table

Time honored traditions going to the wayside to appease the offended.

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, a conservative Republican candidate for president in 2008 and 2016, called on President Trump to reverse Air Force officials’ decision to remove a copy of the Bible from a display table meant to honor prisoners of war and service members missing in action.

“This is an issue I’d love to see the president interject himself into,” Huckabee, the father of White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders, said on Fox & Friends Saturday morning. “I’d love to see him say, as commander in chief of the military, ‘Put the Bible back on the table. Let’s not be stupid about this.’”

In recent years, the Military Religious Freedom Foundation — an advocacy group that says it’s dedicated to upholding service members’ constitutional right of religious freedom — has repeatedly objected to the inclusion of Bibles within POW/MIA displays at military bases and VA hospitals and clinics. The issue arose again recently at Francis E. Warren Air Force Base, near Cheyenne, Wyoming, which like many other bases had placed an POW/MIA table in its military dining facility. The tables date back to the Vietnam War.

The Military Religious Freedom Foundation petitioned the base in May to remove the Bible and replace it with a generic “book of faith” respecting all religions, according to Mikey Weinstein, the group’s founder and president.

Weinstein told Military Times that 36 airmen on base are clients of his foundation.

“Of those 36 clients, 21 are practicing Protestants or Roman Catholics, and the remaining 15 are a mix of other groups and backgrounds,” he said.

Weinstein’s demand was met July 17 when Col. Stacy J. Huser, the commander of the 90th Missile Wing at F.E. Warren, alerted him that base chaplains had purchased a generic “book of faith” and would replace the Bible with it.

“Until it arrives, I’ve asked them to rotate the book placed on the table (through various faiths). Yesterday they placed the Book of Mormon on the table,” Huser said in an email to Weinstein that was published on the MRFF website. “I will contact you again when our permanent ‘book of faith’ is on display. Thank you again for taking care of our Airmen. One of my focus areas is increasing a sense of belonging for all our Airmen.”

A generic “book of faith” contains spiritual writings and prayers from the five chaplain-appointed faith groups within the Defense Department, as well as a sixth set of blank pages to represent those who are atheistic or agnostic, Weinstein said.

Breaking: Trump Secures Big Trade Concessions From EU, Causes Stock Market Rise

>WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. President Donald Trump has secured concessions from the European Union to avoid a trade war, the Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday, citing an EU official who was in the room during talks between Trump and the EU’s Jean-Claude Juncker.

Dow Jones cited the source as saying that Juncker had offered to import more U.S. soybeans and liquefied natural gas as well as reduce duties on some U.S. goods.

It also said that a joint statement was being agreed on car imports. Stocks rose to a session high and the euro rallied strongly on the reports.

California DMV Worker Fesses Up: She Slept 3 Hours Every Day on Job for 4 Years

The apparent lack of efficiency and work ethic on the part of largely unaccountable government bureaucrats — both on the state and federal level — has long been pointed to by advocates of smaller government as anecdotal evidence for why government needs to be downsized.

A recent report released following a state audit of the California Department of Motor Vehicles only serves to buttress those arguments, as it was revealed that one particular employee was found to have slept while on the job for roughly three hours each day for at least four years, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

The employee, who has not been publicly identified, is estimated to have napped at her desk for upwards of 2,200 hours between February 2014 and December 2017, at a cost to state taxpayers of more than $40,000 in unearned pay.

That employee “worked” as a data operator whose responsibility included entering data into official records such as changes of address or new vehicle registration forms.

According to the auditor’s report, the average data operator employee processed around 560 documents per day, but this particular sleepy employee only averaged approximately 200 documents per day, most of which were also full of errors, the Chronicle reported.

Incredibly, the napping employee was never disciplined by her supervisors, even as it was noted in her performance reviews that she routinely slept while on the job.

In its own defense, the DMV issued a statement that claimed the employee couldn’t be punished for her actions because her habit of napping on the job had never been properly documented.

She did, however, receive an official warning in March that she could face disciplinary measures if she continued to sleep on the job.

According to the Sacramento Bee, the employee couldn’t dispute the facts of her snoozing:

Have you ever been infuriated by the DMV?

“The DMV worker who slept at her desk might have had a medical condition that made it difficult for her to work on a regular schedule,” the Bee reported. “In 2016, her doctor informed the department that she could not perform the duties the job required.

“The DMV reassigned her to another position in January 2017, but she continued to sleep at work.”

Oddly enough, the Chronicle reported that the sleepy employee’s supervisors were the ones who appeared to be punished, as they were required to undergo additional training. There was no word on what that additional training entailed or how it related to dealing with an employee consistently wasting taxpayer money by sleeping on the job.

DMVs across the nation are well-known for having exceptionally long wait times for citizens conducting their business with the government, and wait times in California are so extraordinarily long that even the state legislature has called for hearings to address the persistent problem and utter lack of efficiency.

The Chronicle seemed to offer up a defense of the DMV, to an extent, by noting that wait times had increased in recent years due to the implementation of the federal “Real ID Act” which requires by 2020 the issuance of special enhanced driver’s licenses or state ID cards for those who wish to travel by air, which means more people than usual are submitting paperwork and seeking to obtain new cards from DMVs.

The state auditor’s investigation into the sleepy DMV employee was launched by virtue of the state’s Whistleblower Act and was but one of approximately 1,481 other investigations within the past year by the auditor’s office.

The perpetual napper was not alone in costing the taxpayers of California thousands of wasted dollars, though, as the auditor’s investigations uncovered several additional examples of waste, fraud and abuse by state government workers.

One example was that of a manager at California State University-Dominguez Hills, who purchased in 2013 a $7,000 quick-charging station for electric vehicles that has since sat unused due to the fact that it was incompatible with the university’s electrical infrastructure and would cost an additional $100,000 to properly adapt and install.

Other examples included a Kern Valley State Prison employee who left work 45 minutes early each day, missing an estimated 312 hours of work at a cost to taxpayers of $9,000, while another involved two groundskeepers at CSU-Fresno who consistently arrived late to work, left early and took excessively long breaks — including one missing seven hours of a shift in one day — which resulted in thousands of hours of missed work at an untold cost to taxpayers.

Government spending is legendary for its waste and unionized government employees who are difficult to fire just make matters worse.

It is examples of seemingly unaccountable, uncaring and inefficient government bureaucrats and employees like these that fuel the desire among many on the right to dramatically downsize local, state and federal government agencies, with the “work” they allegedly do being farmed out to private businesses and contractors that are more easily held accountable for their actions — or lack thereof — in serving the needs of the people.

Zinke Ditches Obama Policy that Raised Power Prices Across Country

The Department of the Interior is scrapping an Obama-era policy mandating energy companies mitigate development on federal land by funding offsite environmental projects.

The Bureau of Land Management — a DOI-controlled agency and the largest land-owning agency in the U.S. — began forcing oil, gas and coal companies to pay mitigation fees to the BLM or a third party under former President Barack Obama.

The fees would be used to fund environmental projects such as restoring habitat or protecting wetlands.

The size of the fee was calculated by the BLM to cover the damage done by the proposed development.

Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke retracted the policy in a memo to the BLM Tuesday.

“This policy means that Americans … who want to use their public lands will no longer be required to pay money to BLM or third parties as a form of ‘mitigation’ when they seek new permits from BLM,” DOI spokeswoman Faith Vander Voort told The Daily Caller News Foundation.

“BLM will continue to require project proponents to avoid or minimize actual harm on public lands as appropriate.”

“This policy also does not affect State mitigation programs, or compensatory mitigation under other federal laws,” Vander Voort added.

The idea behind the Obama-era policy has floated around BLM officials and government offices for several decades.

Do you agree with Zinke in tossing this policy?

In 1995, A BLM-Wyoming state official said compensatory mitigation fees could “appear to be an unauthorized tax or an equally unauthorized attempt to augment BLM’s existing appropriations,” according to the memo.

Environmentalists bashed the change in policy and accused the Trump administration of selling out public lands to industry.

“This is the latest dismal action by Secretary Zinke and the Trump administration to put special interests ahead of our natural heritage,” Center for Biological Diversity Government Affairs director Brett Hartl told Reuters.

“It is deeply out of touch with the values of all Americans that support a healthy environment and vibrant wildlife communities.”

Author Demanded Shrinking Population, Opposes Trump Wall That Would Shrink Population

The author of the apocalyptic 1968 book “The Population Bomb” that called for population control policies joined other scientists in criticizing President Donald Trump’s plans for a U.S.-Mexico border wall.

Biologist Paul Ehrlich, who once called for the U.S. government to take “whatever steps are necessary to establish a reasonable population size,” joined more than 2,500 scientists in claiming a border wall would “threaten some of the continent’s most biologically diverse regions.”

“As climate change and increasingly warm, dry conditions redistribute resources and shift habitats in the borderlands, the wall may prevent some populations from tracking these changes,” reads the paper Ehrlich and others signed.

While the article does not explicitly oppose Trump’s border wall plans, its lead author told Earther the sheer number of signatories is a “validation of how disastrous the wall would be.”

TRENDING: Rand Paul Names 3 Intelligence ‘Bad Apples’ That Need to be Removed ‘from the Swamp’

The paper calls on Congress and the administration to take steps to minimize any environmental damage from the wall, including not allowing officials to waive environmental reviews.

“What matters is whether the barrier is passable, and from a jaguar’s point of view, an uncrossable fence has the same effect as a wall,” reads the paper, published in the journal BioScience.

“We urge the US government to recognize and give high priority to conserving the ecological, economic, political, and cultural value of the US-Mexico borderlands,” reads the article.

“National security can and must be pursued with an approach that preserves our natural heritage.”

Are you surprised that he backed off of his old opinion about population size?

Ehrlich’s 1968 book came at the height of environmental hysteria. Ehrlich predicted mass starvation and environmental degradation across the world.

Of course, Ehrlich’s apocalyptic predictions didn’t come true, and human well-being has only increased since the 1960s.

Some of Ehrlich’s ideas for limiting population growth included mass sterilization, increased access to abortions and taxing families who had too many children.

Ehrlich and his wife Anne also sat on the board of advisers of the Federation for American Immigration Reform until 2003.

FAIR’s website says “(r)educing legal immigration levels from well over one million presently to 300,000 a year over a sustained period will allow America to manage growth, address environmental concerns, and maintain a high quality of life.” The group also supports Trump’s border wall.

“The promise to build a ‘big beautiful wall’ was a cornerstone of the immigration plan that propelled Donald Trump to the presidency,” the group wrote on its website.

“If he expects to retain the support of the American public, then President Trump should heed American’s calls to ‘build that wall’ — and do the job right,” FAIR wrote.

After 21 Months Imprisoned in Turkey for ‘Christianization,’ American Pastor Freed from Jail

On October 7, 2016, American pastor Andrew Brunson was arrested by Turkish authorities for the crime of “Christianization.”

The 50-year-old pastor, who lived with his wife and children in Turkey for over 23 years, has been in prison ever since, facing false charges of terrorism and espionage.

Many of those testifying against Brunson are “secret witnesses,” and if he is convicted, he could spend 35 years in prison.

News of Brunson’s shocking arrest quickly made its way to the United States, where countless people began rallying for his freedom.

Bruson has adamantly denied the charges against him, and after at four trial postponements and his spending nearly two years in prison, there is still no evidence to prove him guilty.

TRENDING: Rand Paul Names 3 Intelligence ‘Bad Apples’ That Need to be Removed ‘from the Swamp’

President Donald Trump has also voiced his support for the pastor, calling his imprisonment a “total disgrace” and demanding his release so he can be reunited with his family.

“A total disgrace that Turkey will not release a respected U.S. Pastor, Andrew Brunson, from prison,” Trump tweeted on July 18. “He has been held hostage far too long. @RT_Erdogan should do something to free this wonderful Christian husband & father. He has done nothing wrong, and his family needs him!”

The pastor’s family has been anxiously awaiting his release, staying positive and praying for an end to his imprisonment.

On July 24, Brunson’s daughter Jacqueline Funari spoke in front of the US State Department’s religious freedom ministerial about her father’s time in jail. Ultimately, his imprisonment forced him to miss walking Funari down the aisle at her wedding.

“I cannot tell you how proud I am of my father and what an example of Christ’s love he continues to be to the world as he is wrongly imprisoned for his faith,” she said according to Christianity Today, adding that she was “still waiting for my father-daughter dance.”

The American Center for Law and Justice has also been working tirelessly to free Brunson, and on July 25, a Turkish court ruled that he would be allowed to return to his family home in Turkey under house arrest before his trial in October.

Jay Sekulow, Chief Counsel of the ACLJ, released a statement Wednesday about their progress.

“We have confirmed that the Turkish government has issued an order releasing Pastor Andrew Brunson from prison and allowing him to be returned to his home in Turkey,” he said. “This is a critical first step that we believe will result in the freedom of Pastor Brunson so he can return to the United States and be reunited with his family. The President has played a critical role in securing the freedom of Pastor Brunson. We have worked closely with the President on this matter and are grateful for his efforts. We look forward to the ultimate release of Pastor Brunson.”

According to NBC News, Brunson’s lawyer Ismail Cem Halavurt said he spoke with the pastor’s family “and they were very happy,” but still feel “betrayed” that he was held in prison for so long.

Even so, his family, US government officials, and countless supporters continue to rally behind him for the complete resolution of his case.

“We welcome long overdue news that Pastor Brunson has been moved from prison to house arrest in Turkey, but it is not enough,” US Secretary of State wrote on Twitter Wednesday morning. “We have seen no credible evidence against Mr. Brunson, and call on Turkish authorities to resolve his case immediately in a transparent and fair manner.”

According to Halavurt, Brunson’s family was at the prison waiting for him, and he arrived at his home early Wednesday morning.
