David Horowitz: Trump’s Character and Trump’s Presidency

A few days ago I had a dust-up on Twitter with National Review’s Jonah Goldberg. Our conflict was about Trump’s fitness to be president, a subject that has been broached millions of times on social media by other Internet partisans.

Twitchy posted the exchange and promoted it this way: “It’s On! Jonah Goldberg, David Horowitz Duke It Out Over Trump’s Character.” The donnybrook led to 500,000 impressions off my Twitter feed, including legions of anti-Trump zealots eager to demonstrate how creative they could be in devising insults to throw at me for defending Trump: beyond dumb, in need of psychiatric help, and probably receiving payments through offshore bank accounts.

As it happens, I’ve known Jonah for twenty years or more, admired his wit and insights, promoted his books, and put him on my platforms. I was distressed when he joined the chorus of Never Trumpers, but never wrote a critical word about him, hoping I guess that, as Trump systematically undid the damage that the Obama regime had inflicted on the country, Jonah would return to his senses.

Other Never Trump conservatives, on the other hand, just jumped to the other side. Bill Kristol even went so far as to collude with the Brennan-instigated witch-hunt by spreading talking points from the Steele dossier. It was easy to write these renegades off, though still wondering how they rationalized the betrayal of their lifetime principles, or were able to deny that they were doing so.

But a group of Never Trumpers like Jonah adopted a less radical stance and conceded that many or even most of Trump’s policy actions were actually conservative, and ones they agreed with. What made them Never Trumpers was his horrible, defective character. Most prominent among this group was Bret Stephens, whom I have also admired and promoted in the past. At the end of Trump’s first year, Bret wrote an op-ed for the New York Times – the position being an obvious reward for his defection – called “Why I’m Still A Never Trumper.” In it he praised Trump’s major policy actions since entering the White House. But then he attacked Trump’s character as un-presidential and indefensible. And he averred: “I still wish Hillary Clinton were president.”

When I read his column, the first question that popped into my mind was this: how can indefensible and un-presidential bad character lead to such admirable presidential decisions? I am not aware of any attempt by Bret Stephens or Jonah Goldberg or similar Never Trumpers to provide an answer.

The posture of these Never Trumpers is transparently self-serving. It preserves their intellectual credentials as conservatives, and simultaneously takes them out of the line of fire from an increasingly vicious left whose goal is to destroy Trump and his presidency, and – incidentally – conservative America. Sitting on the fence affords them new career opportunities — appearances on CNN and MSNBC and columns in the NY Times. All that’s required is that they avoid taking sides in the political war that is engulfing the country. All this reminds me of a memorable Trotsky sneer about liberals, whom he accused of being reluctant to step into the stream of political conflict because they were afraid to get their moral principles wet.

So, when this tweet from Jonah Goldberg appeared on my feed, I abandoned my self-restraint and answered it:

This was followed by a re-tweet and a new comment:

I don’t know whether it was the snide-ness of this comment or its absoluteness that triggered me, but it seemed so pig-headedly self-righteous, so oblivious of the complexities of human character, not to mention the nuclear dimensions of the left’s war against Trump, that I responded, and in doing so walked into a hornets’ nest.

Which drew this retort:

The nastiness of that last sentence shocked me. Evidently the hatred of Trump is so fevered it can burn through twenty years of cordiality and acquaintance. I wonder if Jonah would be so hostile to someone who shared his view of Trump’s character but thought Trump’s policies were racist and tyrannical.

As it happens I am well aware of the vulnerabilities of what I tweeted. I should never have written it and fallen into the Twitter trap. Tweets don’t provide enough space to account for the complexities of this subject or provide sufficient examples to make one’s case. “Character” is notoriously mercurial and complex to judge.

As it happens, in referring to Trump’s loyalty I had in mind two episodes. The first was the topic of the week: Omarosa. Why did he stick with such a wretched individual for so long, despite warnings from everyone around him that she was no good? Loyalty to a fault. The second was when the left showed its teeth in his first days in the White House and maliciously attacked Steve Bannon and Jeff Sessions as white nationalists and racists and even neo-Nazis. Any other Republican, freshly in office, would have thrown them under the bus, however false the accusations. Trump’s fortitude, his refusal to back down under withering fire, is also a character trait, and an admirable one – actually the key to his success where Bush and congressional Republicans had repeatedly failed. Loyalty.

Since Jonah brings up Trump’s three marriages let me ask the question: who can see inside another person’s marriage? I thought, moreover, that since Reagan, who had two wives, entered the White House and performed as a conservative hero, Republicans would have gotten over their puritanical prejudices. All politicians have flawed characters. It’s the nature of the job, which requires compromises, prevarications, dirty deals, and the like. In Trump’s case what is important is not his loyalty to his wives (and none of them seem to be complaining), but his loyalty to the cause he champions and the people who support him.

Has Trump kept his promises to his supporters? Has he stayed the course he set for himself of making America great again? That loyalty is the character trait that matters most in a leader, and should matter most in any assessment of Trump. He has taken great personal risks and incurred great personal costs. His reputation for example, was pretty good before he ran against Democrats and their media, who fueled an epidemic of hate portraying him as a racist and neo-Nazi.

I’m betting there isn’t another Republican who would not have wilted under these attacks. Who would have had the fortitude to stay the course and keep his promises. That’s really good character. And its presidential.

Study: More ‘Ecosexual’ Professors Are Having Sex with Trees

A recently published academic article examines “exosexuals’ encounters with the natural environment.”

In a new academic piece published in the journal Feminist Theory, Professor Lauran Whitworth of St. Mary’s College of Maryland defines the increasingly popular term “ecosexual.”

“1. A person that finds nature sensual, sexy. 2. A new sexual identity. 3: Person who takes the Earth as their lover,” she wrote. In another paragraph, Whitworth explains that while some environmentalists encourage the use of environmentally-friendly sex products such as fair trade condoms and chemical-free lubricants, “ecosexuals” take it a step further by encouraging sex with “nature itself.”

Whitworth includes a description of one “ecosexual” individual’s first sexual encounter with a redwood tree at Yosemite National Park.

In the spirit of carnival, ecosexuality embraces degradation and decomposition. Sprinkle describes her first encounter with redwood trees at Yosemite National Park: ‘I loved the scent of the trunk, like vanilla mixed with soil. I have a strong memory of coming across a redwood that had fallen over from a storm. I walked around off the trail and peeked at its freshly exposed roots. So soft, so sensuous, so sexy! I had to touch them.’

In a particularly bizarre portion of the piece, Whitworth writes about how defecating outside is a form of “ecosexuality.” According to her, “ecosexuality celebrates the carnal and grotesque, particularly in some of its campiest moments.”

Breitbart News has reported on “ecosexuals” throughout their rise in popularity in feminist circles. In November 2016, Breitbart News reported that “ecosexuals” were masturbating under waterfalls and trees to save the planet. In September 2017, Breitbart News reported that a UC Santa Cruz professor was encouraging her students to have sex with the earth in order to preserve it. In April 2018, Breitbart News reported on a University of Michigan professor that wrote about the importance of “talking erotically to plants.”

Report: Marijuana addiction is real and the problem has more than doubled as legalization grows

Dozens of states have legalized some form of marijuana use in recent years and many proponents have argued that the drug is not only safe, it’s not addictive.

But more and more research has proven that theory is wrong and it may be too late to walk back the laws that have at least made pot addiction more common, The Atlantic reported.

“In large national surveys, about 1 in 10 people who smoke it say they have a lot of problems. They say things like, ‘I have trouble quitting. I think a lot about quitting and I can’t do it. I smoked more than I intended to. I neglect responsibilities.’ There are plenty of people who have problems with it, in terms of things like concentration, short-term memory, and motivation,” Keith Humphreys, a professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Stanford University, told The Atlantic.

“People will say, ‘Oh, that’s just you fuddy-duddy doctors.’ Actually, no. It’s millions of people who use the drug who say that it causes problems,” he said.

Marijuana use among adults jumped by 50 percent in 2016 over the percentages from 2002 to 2015, according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.

And the number of adults who reported having a cannabis-use disorder more than doubled between 2012-13 over 2001-02, according to a research published in the JAMA Psychiatry journal.

What do public health experts say?

There are a number of issues that have health experts concerned, including the increasing levels of THC found in marijuana products and the number of constant users.

“Cannabis is potentially a real public-health problem,” Mark A. R. Kleiman, a professor of public policy at New York University, told The Atlantic. “It wasn’t obvious to me 25 years ago, when 9 percent of self-reported cannabis users over the last month reported daily or near-daily use. I always was prepared to say, ‘No, it’s not a very abusable drug. Nine percent of anybody will do something stupid.’ But that number is now [something like] 40 percent.”

Also, state and local governments are legalizing cannabis without considering potential harm to consumers.

For example, the availability of hyper-potent marijuana products edibles, tinctures, vape pens, sublingual sprays, and concentrates has many experts concerned because scientists don’t know how it will affect people’s bodies and brains.

“We’re seeing these increases in the strength of cannabis, as we are also seeing an emergence of new types of products,” Ziva Cooper, an associate professor of clinical neurobiology in the Department of Psychiatry at Columbia University Medical Center, told The Atlantic. “A lot of these concentrates can have up to 90 percent THC.”

In 1975, marijuana flowers contained less than 1 percent THC and less than 3 percent more than a decade later. Now, it’s easy to find buds with upwards of 30 percent THC, according to Gizmodo.

What are some other risks?

Marijuana shops have untrained budtenders, who often hand out unscientific medical advice to users.

“I’m most scared of the advice to smoke marijuana during pregnancy for cramps,” Humphreys said.

Also, because marijuana is still illegal under federal laws, there is no safety-testing like those done on pharmaceuticals and no regulations on labeling.

The idea of a loosely regulated, commercialized drug being made available to the masses sets off the alarm button for health experts.

“The reckless way that we are legalizing marijuana so far is mind-boggling from a public-health perspective,” Kevin Sabet, an Obama administration official and a founder of the nonprofit Smart Approaches to Marijuana, told The Atlantic. “The issue now is that we have lobbyists, special interests, and people whose motivation is to make money that are writing all of these laws and taking control of the conversation.”

What can be done?

It’s possible to create policy reforms that could reduce problematic use without returning to prohibition.

The District of Columbia doesn’t allow commercial sale of marijuana products for recreational use. In D.C., marijuana can be grown at home and gifted among adults.

“If I got to pick a policy, that would probably be it,” Kleiman told The Atlantic. “That would be a fine place to be if we were starting from prohibition, but we are starting from patchwork legalization. As the Vermont farmer says, I don’t think you can get there from here. I fear its time has passed. It’s generally true that the drug warriors have never missed an opportunity to miss an opportunity.”

Legislators could create policies that place monthly purchase limits on THC and there could be limits to the amount of THC in products. Advertising could be banned or limited.

Also, listening to the users who’ve suffered from cannabis addiction could help educate the millions of users who believe its harmless.

The Nuclear Option: Democrat Scott Wallace’s Charity Spends Millions on ‘State-Sponsored Population Control’

Given the Democratic Party’s jubilant enthusiasm for abortion, widespread abhorrence of law enforcement officers, and general hatred of all human freedom, voters could be forgiven these days for thinking that maybe Democrats just don’t really like human beings all that much.

Which is a real problem if you are a card-carrying member of that party running for office and trying to get these very same human people to show up and vote for you.

Well, President Trump is such a dangerous monster working for shadowy Russian oligarchs that — obviously — the upcoming midterm elections have to be a Giant Blue Wave, all the great experts tell us.

Mr. Trump needles back: Red Wave!

It would not be the first time Mr. Trump was right and all the experts were wrong. Certainly, Mr. Trump has a far keener grasp than any of the experts about how badly out of tune both major parties are — particularly the Democrats.

But back to this whole hatred of human beings.

The Democrats don’t want us drinking through plastic straws, driving cars or flushing our toilets. All these fierce wildfires out West — they are all our fault, and if we would all just stop living, then the inferno would cease and the seas would stop rising and America’s iconic Interstate Highway System could return to its natural state of swampy jungle.

Yeah!

Nowhere are these anti-human sentiments among Democrat politicians more pronounced than in the race for 1st Congressional District of Pennsylvania this year. Which is kind of funny, given that Pennsylvania is a pretty emphatically pro-human state.

The Democrats being the party of the poor, Democrats have selected a man named Scott Wallace as their nominee to pick off the Republican incumbent in what all the experts say should be a competitive race.

Mr. Wallace is worth between $100 million and $300 million. Family fortune. Must be nice.

Anyway, before running for Congress, Mr. Wallace ran his family’s nonprofit charity called the Wallace Global Fund.

And by “charity,” I mean an organization dedicated to the annihilation of humans.

Over the decades, according to The Week newsmagazine, Mr. Wallace’s “charity” spent more than $7 million promoting “state-sponsored population control, including China-style limits on the number of children families are allowed to have.”

Sometimes, you know, Love Trumps Children.

One of the fine institutions benefiting from Mr. Wallace’s “charitable” largesse advocates the following in a public brochure:

“1. That no responsible family should have more than two children.” (“Brady Bunch” reruns will be banned by the state.)

“2. All methods of birth control, including legalized abortion, should be freely available — and at no cost in poverty cases.” (Like I said, these people really, really love the poor.)

“3. Irresponsible people who have more than two children should be taxed to the hilt for the privilege of irresponsible breeding.” (Not clear how closely related — if at all — Scott Wallace is to the legendary anti-humanist George Wallace.)

Somehow, Scott Wallace manages to be the worst of both worlds. He is actually anti-choice AND pro-abortion. And entirely anti-human.

How does a guy like this get through grade school civics class, let alone get nominated by a major party to run for Congress?

So, who knows? With creatures like this on the ballot, we really might be looking at another Red Wave this fall.

Virginians Will Pay for Amazon’s Power Lines

Citizens of Gainesville, VA, are reportedly being made to pay for Amazon’s $172 million power line installation, after local protesters successfully fought the lines being installed through their properties and a Civil War battlefield.

“For a little while earlier this year, it seemed as though 87-year-old Rosie Thomas and her neighbors in the small town of Gainesville, Va., had beaten Amazon. Virginia’s largest utility, Dominion Energy Inc., had planned to run an aboveground power line straight through a Civil War battlefield—and Thomas’s property—to reach a nearby data center run by an Amazon.com Inc. subsidiary,” reported Bloomberg. “After three years of petitions and protests in front of the gated data center, skirmishes punctuated by barking dogs and shooing police, Dominion agreed to bury that part of the line along a nearby highway, at an estimated cost of $172 million.”

“Within a month, however, the utility and state legislators had passed on the cost to Thomas and her fellow Virginians. The state’s House of Delegates approved Dominion’s proposal to raise the money needed for the Amazon line with an as-yet-unannounced monthly fee,” Bloomberg continued.

Upon hearing the news, Thomas, who is struggling to pay for her own monthly electricity bills, reportedly declared, “Lord, have mercy.”

Thomas is also reportedly concerned that it “may cost her the house she’s live in for half a century.”

“Amazon’s got all the money they ever needed,” she proclaimed. “They don’t need any more.”

This month, it was revealed that Amazon paid less than £4.6 million tax in the United Kingdom last year, despite tripling their profits.

Last year, President Trump called out Amazon for “doing great damage to tax paying retailers.”

“Amazon is doing great damage to tax paying retailers. Towns, cities and states throughout the U.S. are being hurt,” President Trump expressed. “Many jobs being lost!”

Trump: ‘Blue Wave Means Crime and Open Borders’

President Donald Trump on Monday lambasted Democrats for being soft on crime and said a wave of Democratic midterm election victories would only lead to more crime.

He centered his criticism on Democrats’ lack of support and even hostility toward law enforcement, specifically Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the Border Patrol. Holding a White House event to honor federal immigration officials, Trump said law and order is popular and will lead to Republican victories in November.

"I think we’re going to do very well in the midterms, and this is one of the very big reasons. The fact is, people respect law and order, and they love our law enforcement," Trump said. "I think we’re going to have much more of a red wave than what you’re going to see as a phony blue wave. Blue wave means crime, it means open borders. Not good."

As Democrats such as Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (N.Y.) and rising star Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez have called for ICE to be abolished, Trump described the idea as shameful and dangerous. He went after "radical" Democrats and their "campaign to abolish ICE, in other words they want to abolish America’s borders."

He called out New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D.) by referring to his comment last week that America "was never that great," which he later reversed after negative publicity.

"Any politician that puts criminal aliens before American citizens should find a new line of work," Trump said, to applause. "And any politicians that get up and say that our country was never great–you heard that? I think that’s the end of that career."

He criticized Democratic members of Congress as well for not voting for a resolution supporting ICE.

"Last month, House Democrats even boycotted a resolution supporting our brave ICE officers and agents, but I will say this, the Republicans were with you all the way."

Trump also criticized the notion that it serves social justice to oppose secure borders, saying Democrats’ policies in that direction only create more injustice.

"Their radical policies are the ultimate injustice, hurting innocent Americans and spilling innocent blood," he said. "People are dying because of their either lack of knowledge, lack of understanding, or just plain stupidity."

The president also called it "shameful" that Portland, Oregon Mayor Ted Wheeler ordered local law enforcement to stand down in the face of anti-ICE protesters who successfully shut down a local ICE office due to security concerns. Although Wheeler acknowledged the protesters’ unruly behavior, federal agents wrote a cease-and-desist letter in which they accused the mayor of having cops not follow up on 911 calls.

Best Selling Author: “Only Person Who Got Money Directly From Russia… Was Hillary”

They often say that those who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones.

Whoever “they” are, Hillary Clinton’s most ardent supporters must not have met them.

While far-left hysteria has manifested in the fruitless but drawn-out Mueller investigation, the cries that Trump engaged in some shady collusion activities with Russia to help him win the 2016 election have not ceased.

If anything — and this might just be me — it seems the far-left is screaming about Russian collusion louder and louder as Mueller’s investigation continues to not yield anything concrete pinning Trump.

But perhaps the far-left might want to use their indoor voices regarding Russian collusion.

Tom Fitton, Judicial Watch president, went on Fox News and dropped a scathing bit of rhetoric that Clinton supporters will not want to hear.

Judicial Watch, currently embroiled in a lawsuit to uncover critical documents regarding embattled former CIA director John Brennan, is “a conservative, non-partisan educational foundation, (promoting) transparency, accountability and integrity in government, politics and the law.”

Fitton, who is also author of NY Times best selling book “Cleaning House: Exposing Our Government’s Secrets and Lies,” is the president of Judicial Watch, and as such, is privy to documents that most normal people would never see.

Do you think Hillary Clinton had more to do with Russia in 2016 than Donald Trump?

And according to what Fitton has seen, there was only one 2016 presidential nominee that had dealings with Russia and it wasn’t the Republican one.

“The only person who got money directly from Russia as far as I could tell running for office in 2016 was Hillary Clinton,” Fitton said during an appearance on Fox News’ “Sunday Morning Futures.”

Fitton went on to describe the wide web of alleged corruption and conflict linking the Clinton camp and Russia.

“Her husband (Bill Clinton) made a speech in Russia for $500,000 to a firm that was a front for the Russians and (A now-Russian and Canadian run uranium mining company) Uranium One. They reportedly received millions as part of an effort to get a good result on that Uranium One decision,” Fitton described.

Those are some alarming numbers. If true, the clandestine dealings between the Clinton camp and the Russians are clearly mutually beneficial. The Russians get uranium and the Clintons get gobs of money.

That sounds a lot more damning than a presidential candidate using whatever means possible to find some political dirt on their opponent.

Fitton and Fox News host Maria Bartiromo went on to describe the rampant conflict of interest in the Clinton investigations. It’s been bad enough where at least five prominent members of the intelligence community have come under fire for potentially showing favor to Clinton over Trump.

Andrew McCabe, James Comey, Sally Yates, Peter Strzok and Bruce Ohr have all been fired, demoted or put under investigation. That’s a major problem for what should be impartial and just members of the Department of Justice and the FBI.

That’s five major cases of favoritism which some might also describe as collusion. And there’s hard evidence to back up those claims considering their respective fates.

Trump may have colluded with Russians. The same way Bigfoot may be real.

But for now, the concrete evidence is all pointing to one camp that is rife with conflict of interest and shady dealings. And it’s not Trump’s.

People Fleeing Socialist Venezuela Shocked When Asked for Passports

According to how American leftists talk, socialism is the greatest thing ever invented and all prior failed attempts at creating a socialist Utopia were simply due to it being improperly implemented, and “this time we’ll get it right.”

One of those failed attempts at creating a socialist Utopia is the once-prosperous South American nation of Venzuela, which is now a miserable and impoverished hellhole from which millions of Venezuelans are attempting to flee.

So many Venezuelans are exiting their own country right now that neighboring nations are feeling overwhelmed at the flood of migrants and have begun to implement policies intended to stem the tide, such as requiring passports for entry, according to the U.K. Daily Mail.

Two of those nations are Ecuador and Peru, which don’t share a border with Venezuela but are separated only by the nation of Colombia. through which the Venezuelan migrants are transiting.

Ecuador was the first to announce that Venezuelans would be required to provide an official passport to gain entry into the country, followed shortly by Peru announcing similar requirements. The only problem is, it is exceptionally difficult for Venezuelans to obtain a passport.

Unsurprisingly, Colombia was less than pleased at the new policies implemented by their neighbors — even though they have their own similar but oft-ignored passport requirement — as the fleeing Venezuelans who can’t reach Ecuador or Peru typically end up staying in Colombia.

Incredibly, Ecuadorian authorities estimate that an astounding 4,000-plus Venezuelans attempted to enter the nation every single day in the first few weeks of August, traversing across the main entry point of the Rumichaca International Bridge.

Colombian officials are concerned that the new policy will create a bottleneck at the important bridge and add to the already extensive congestion. “We are immensely worried about the consequences this might present,” stated Colombian Migration Director Christian Krueger.

The United Nations has estimated that at least 2.4 million Venezuelans have fled the socialist hellhole since 2014 in order to escape the tyrannical government, insane hyperinflation of their currency and widespread shortages of food, medicine and all sorts of staple goods … including even the ink and paper required to produce passports.

Are these South American nations right to demand passports from Venezuelans attempting to flee their socialist hellhole?

“The exodus of Venezuelans from the country is one of Latin America’s largest mass-population movements in history,” stated William Spindler, spokesman for the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees, earlier this month.

It has been further estimated that about 1 million of those migrating Venezuelans have passed through or settled in Colombia in search of asylum and jobs in just the past two years alone. Even though Colombia implemented their own passport requirement for Venezuelans earlier this year, it is not strictly enforced and tens of thousands of Venezuelans enter the country illegally through the porous 1,370-mile border the two nations share.

For their part, Peruvian officials maintain that the passport requirement is simply to ensure orderly migration into the country and to weed out “bad apples” that are mixed in with the “decent people” who are just looking for a better life. They estimate that there are upwards of 25,000 Venezuelans poised along Ecuador’s southern border who are preparing to cross into Peru, some of whom intend to proceed further south to Argentina or Chile.

The new passport policy will take effect on August 25, but Colombian official Krueger said it would have little effect on stemming the flow of Venezuelan migrants and suggested all of the neighboring nations work together to deal with the growing crisis.

Meanwhile, tens of thousands of Venezuelans have also been fleeing their country toward the south, entering into Brazil through the border town of Pacaraima and causing unrest among the local Brazilian residents, especially after a group of Venezuelan migrants were suspected of beating and stabbing a local store owner, according to Reuters.

That attack prompted the local residents to form an angry mob and chase roughly 1,200 Venezuelans back across the border into their socialist hellhole. The Brazilian government was forced to dispatch additional military troops to the checkpoint to try and calm the tense situation.

If socialism is so great, as American leftists are so quick to assure us, why are so many Venezuelans so desperate to leave their veritable socialist Utopia and risk getting stuck in migrant camps along borders as neighboring nations refuse to allow them in without passports, which they can’t get from their awesome socialist government?

We won’t hold our breath waiting for an answer to that question.
