Oh yes: Study shows drinking during middle age may reduce risk of dementia later

All this time, I’ve been blaming President Trump for my day-drinking when I should have been thanking him.

His greatest legacy will be the total eradication of dementia in the U.S. population.

Note the fine print, though. It’s not the case that the more you drink, the less likely you are to lose mental acuity later. (Would that it were.) There’s a sweet spot: Drinking too little or too much increases the risk of dementia later on.

The study, published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ), followed participants who were aged between 35 and 55 when it began in the mid-1980s. Abstinence in midlife was associated with a 45% higher risk of dementia compared with people who consumed between one and 14 units of alcohol per week. Long-term abstainers and those who reported a decrease in alcohol consumption also appeared to have an increased risk…

The team of French and British researchers suggested that part of the excess risk of dementia in abstainers could be attributable to the greater risk of cardiometabolic disease reported in this group…

Commenting on the study, Dr Sara Imarisio, the head of research at Alzheimer’s Research UK, said: “As this study only looked at people’s drinking in midlife, we don’t know about their drinking habits earlier in adulthood, and it is possible that this may contribute to their later life dementia risk.

Yeah, that’s a li’l wrinkle in the data, huh? Some middle-aged teetotalers probably became teetotalers because they were alcoholics in their youth and spent the rest of their adult lives recovering. Did their abstinence in middle age increase their dementia risk or was it their (possible) youthful indulgence that did it? Even if they weren’t youthful drinkers, it may be that they suffered from other health problems in middle age that forced them to stay away from alcohol and it’s those underlying health issues, not the teetolating, that led to dementia later. There’s no suggestion of causation in the study between abstinence and dementia, as far as I can tell. It’s purely a claim of correlation. And you know what they say about causation and correlation.

Right now you’re thinking, “Yeah, yeah, just give me the bottom line. How many beers are in 14 ‘units’ of alcohol? Because if it’s one beer per unit, that’s 2-3 pretty decent evenings per week in the name of holding off Alzheimer’s.” Alas, it is not. Fourteen units is six pints of weak beer, seven glasses of wine, or 14 shots of the hard stuff. Evenly distributed over a week, that’s one very mild buzz per sitting if you’re lucky. Unevenly distributed, it’s a pretty fun night — although 14 units in the span of a few hours has its own health drawbacks.

Oh, and just to further dampen your enthusiasm, yes, of course there are studies out there suggesting precisely the opposite conclusion from this one. Aren’t there always?

Relatedly, new data from Gallup:

That was quite a spike for the hard stuff after the 2016 election, huh? A few traditional beer- and wine-drinkers apparently decided that they needed something stiffer to get through the day in 2017. I wonder why. Anyway, back to normal now. One can get used to anything.

ABRAMSON, BALLABON: Does Stanford Condone Violence When It’s Directed Against Jews?

Imagine a high school or college student who—in this climate of heightened awareness of bullying, violence, even school shooters—posted on his social media something like: “I’m so fed up with all the crap people talk. When I get back to campus, I’ll physically fight anyone who spouts bullsh*t! I’ll abolish your a**.” If you were a school administrator, would you take that seriously? Consider disciplinary action? Be concerned about liability?

Continetti: Many in Media Have Incentive to Act Against Trump

Washington Free Beacon editor-in-chief Matthew Continetti said Thursday that many in the media are incentivized to act against President Donald Trump.

Appearing on Fox News’ "Special Report," Continetti told host Bret Baier that the media uses opposition to Trump as a way of gaining ratings and for their own fulfillment.

"I think the incentives here, Bret, are kind of in misalignment," Continetti said. "On the one hand, you have many in the press who have an incentive to be very oppositional toward the Trump administration, who have an incentive to be sensationalist, to get ratings, and also to kind of get a sense of heroism against the Trump administration."

"And on the other hand, you have the Trump administration, which clearly understands that its base is extremely distrustful of the media and for many, many years, the conservative base of the Republican party has viewed the media as basically kind of the epitome of the political and cultural elite in this country," Continetti added. "So, I don’t see this debate or argument ending anytime soon."

This comes after CNN reporter Jim Acosta, who frequently criticizes the Trump administration, got into an argument with Sanders earlier on Thursday about Trump calling the "fake news" press the "enemy" of the American people.

Panelist Steve Hilton said that his actions were not proper, while Baier criticized Acosta for becoming the story.

"Specifically on Jim Acosta, I think his persistent bullying of Sarah Sanders there is bordering on the abusive, but don’t expect any #MeToo action on that from CNN, I think," Hilton said.

"It really shouldn’t be about us, ever," Baier said.

"He is making it so and he is bullying her on a regular basis in an extremely offensive way," Hilton said.

Egyptian Immigrant After Molesting 13 Women: I Didn’t Know It Was Wrong

Are all cultures and belief systems equal?

Liberals often act as if the answer is yes, and take stances on multiculturalism and border enforcement that are shaped by this assumption.

Conservatives, in contrast, tend to believe that some cultures are incompatible with American and western values — and a disturbing case in Europe definitely reinforces that view.

A Muslim immigrant to Germany has been charged with committing more than a dozen sexual assaults and at least one rape over a period of three years.

Shockingly, he confessed to the crimes — which included groping women and fondling himself on busy subways — but gave a disturbing reason for his offenses.

During a court appearance, the suspect named Ali E. declared that he had no idea that sexually attacking women was illegal, because he could get away with it in his home country of Egypt.

“Nobody told me that this is wrong,” the 29-year-old man insisted, according to an English translation from the German newspaper BZ Berlin.

“In Egypt, things like that happen a lot, they do not punish them. I do not know any laws,” continued the accused criminal, despite the fact that he has been living in Europe for 15 years.

That excuse didn’t seem to impress the judge, who asked incredulously if Ali truly believed he could behave in that lewd manner. When claiming that it was allowed in Egypt didn’t work, the suspect listed a number of equally weak reasons for his crimes.

Do you believe unchecked immigration is connected to sexual crimes?

The Muslim immigrant went on to blame “drugs, Satan and the interpreter,” according to the translated BZ Berlin article.

Yes, it turns out that even after a decade and a half in Germany, the Egyptian immigrant didn’t bother to learn his second country’s language, either.

As the news blog Jihad Watch pointed out, the man may have actually been honest when he insisted that he didn’t think sexually assaulting women was bad, as distasteful as that sounds.

“He is likely telling the truth,” said Robert Spencer, an expert on radical Islam who has authored several books.

“In Egypt, if a woman ventures out with her hair uncovered, she is risking being sexually assaulted. So he brought these attitudes to Germany. What else did anyone expect?” he asked.

That’s a very good question, and one that gets to the core of the left’s flawed views on multiculturalism and mass immigration.

Bumper-sticker slogans like “diversity is our strength” and “coexist” only work if the people involved actually share the same basic values. When outsiders have radically different beliefs about acceptable behavior, however, chaos ensues.

Sharia-based Islam is one of those radical beliefs. One look at the consequences of out-of-control immigration from predominantly Islamic countries to places like Germany, Sweden and even the United Kingdom make that immensely clear.

Although leftist professors in elitist colleges might disagree, the reality is that there are dramatically different cultural standards between most Middle Eastern countries and the west. Some of them are fundamentally incompatible with our values … and when immigrants like Ali are imported en masse, it is often women and girls who are most hurt.

This certainly doesn’t mean that Muslims cannot live successfully in the west; millions of law-abiding Muslim Americans do so every day in the United States. What it does mean, however, is that the culture and environment from which immigrants come must be a serious consideration.

Europe is not Egypt, and neither is America. Until officials on both continents realize that unvetted immigration has real-world consequences, more people will be needlessly put at risk … and that, perhaps, is the real crime.

Special Bible New VA Sec. Insisted on Using for Swearing-In Shows He’s Right Man for the Job

The Department of Veterans Affairs has been in shambles for years. Stories of American men and women who risk their lives in service to our country only to receive horrendous treatment from their government are heartbreaking and unacceptable.

President Donald Trump has repeatedly promised to restore the broken VA health system. “Our veterans have fulfilled their duty to this nation, and now we must fulfill our duty to them,” he said earlier this year.

In an effort to fulfill that promise, Trump swore in Robert Wilkie as the new Veterans Affairs secretary on Monday.

Wilkie was chosen to replace Secretary David Schulkin who was fired earlier this year after numerous ethics charges brought against him.

If Wilkie’s swearing-in ceremony — and the Bible he brought with him — is any indication, he’s the perfect replacement.

During the ceremony, Trump explained that Wilkie himself is the son of a veteran who was injured in the Vietnam war.

“Robert Wilkie is the proud son of an Army veteran, an artillery officer raised on the base at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. That’s a great place. On his daily walk to high school with the woman who is now his wife, he passed by the Fayetteville VA hospital, which bore the inscription: ‘The Price of Freedom is Visible Here.’ It made a big impact. It was a price Robert saw firsthand through his own father, who was gravely injured in combat during the Vietnam War,” Trump said.

“Robert went on to serve as an officer in both the Air Force and the Navy, then as Assistant Secretary of Defense for Legislative Affairs, and as Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness. Robert also serves with distinction as Acting Secretary of Veterans Affairs,” the president continued.

Are you happy with President Trump’s choice of Robert Wilkie as VA secretary?

Wilkie brought his own worn Bible to use for the ceremony, and it explained its long and incredible history.

“The Bible that I will take my oath on reminds me of the 100th anniversary of the end of the war to end all wars,” Wilkie said. “It was a Bible taken into battle by my wife’s grandfather who had probably never ventured beyond three or four counties in North and South Carolina. But by the time he was 18, he was marching up the Champs-Élysées into the cauldron of the Meuse-Argonne.”

He continued, “On another part of that battlefield was a young captain of field artillery — my great-grandfather — who left a small-town law practice in Cleveland, Mississippi, to join up with the All American Division, which, by the way, had a reluctant soldier, a scratch farmer from Pall Mall, Tennessee by way of Buncombe County, North Carolina, who would not only earn the Medal of Honor but go on to the be the greatest hero of that war. Private Onslow Bullard, Captain A.D. Somerville, and Sergeant Alvin York — ordinary Americans called upon to do extraordinary things. It is their … descendants whom we are honored to serve.  Millions of ordinary Americans who have answered a special call for us.

“Mr. President, I am humbled by your confidence. I am humbled by the prospect of serving those who have borne the battle, those American men and women who have sacrificed so much,” he said finally.

Wilkie has promised to bring “world-class customer service” to the VA, and if he brings the respect he expressed for our nation’s veterans during his swearing-in ceremony to his work as secretary, it’s a safe bet he’ll do just that.

Watch the ceremony below:

A New York judge freed an ex-con without bond — now he’s suspected in several murders

The man suspected in the strangling murder of a 29-year-old woman had been released by a New York District Court judge less than two weeks earlier — after being charged with felony strangulation, WCBS-TV reported.

Danueal Drayton is suspected of murdering Samantha Stewart of Queens, N.Y., by strangling her to death on July 17. Two weeks before, Nassau County District Court Judge Erica Prager rejected the district attorney’s request to hold Drayton on $7,500 bail on charges that he choked his girlfriend inside her car on June 30.

“It would have been impossible for the judge at that time to foresee the allegations that are presently unfolding and coming to light,” a Nassau County Court spokesman told the New York Daily News.

Drayton has since confessed to six other murders, and was arrested for allegedly raping a female hostage in California.

Was it really impossible?

Drayton had a notable record of arrests on his record, and in 2011 was sentenced to three years in prison for second-degree strangulation. He was on probation in Connecticut and had missed his last three mandatory visits with his probation officer.

Kenneth Stewart, the father of victim Samantha, didn’t buy that the judge couldn’t have foreseen Drayton as a threat.

“This guy walked out of jail on the 5th of July,” Stewart said. “My daughter came back from Jamaica on the 3rd of July. How could they miss a red flag like that?”

How was Drayton caught?

Drayton fled to California after Stewart’s murder, and was captured by police on July 26 at an apartment where he allegedly raped and attempted to murder a woman he was holding hostage.

Drayton’s habit was to meet his victims through dating websites — that was how he met Stewart and his alleged California victim.

“The common denominator in these two cases — one being a murder, one being a rape — is dating websites,” said NYPD chief of detectives Dermot Shea at a press conference. “I believe there will be more victims.”

Drayton is now being held on $1.25 million bond and has been charged with attempted murder, forcible rape, false imprisonment by violence, and sexual penetration by a foreign object. He hasn’t yet been charged in the New York murder.
