Texas Becomes First State to Reject Refugee Resettlement

Greg Abbott

Texas governor Greg Abbott (R.) on Friday told the State Department that his state will become the first in the nation to refuse federal refugee resettlement.

In a letter to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Abbott wrote that in the wake of the border crisis that rocked the state in 2019, Texas lacks the state and private capacity to deal with even more demand on its humanitarian resources.

"At this time, the state and non-profit organizations have a responsibility to dedicate available resources to those who are already here, including refugees, migrants, and the homeless—indeed, all Texans," Abbott wrote. "As a result, Texas cannot consent to initial refugee resettlement for FY2020."

The move is likely to shake up refugee resettlement in the United States, as Texas has historically played home to as many as 10 percent of annual refugee arrivals. Particularly if other states follow suit, this may in turn mean a continued decline in refugee admissions in the Trump era.

In his letter, Abbott pinned the blame for the circumstances leading to his decision squarely on Congress, writing that "Texas has been left … to deal with disproportionate migration issues resulting from a broken federal immigration system."

The state, which makes up over half of America’s 2,000 mile border with Mexico, was particularly hard hit by 2019’s illegal immigration crisis. Data from U.S. Customs and Border Protection show that of the roughly 850,000 individuals apprehended attempting to illegally cross, 626,000—74 percent—were picked up in one of the five border sectors covering Texas. In total, Texas saw a 150 percent increase in border apprehensions over F.Y. 2018, compared to a 54 percent increase in the other border states.

"Texas continues to have to deal with the consequences of an immigration system Congress has failed to fix," Abbott wrote.

This strain is exacerbated by Texas’s disproportionate generosity toward refugees in years past. As Abbott noted, roughly 10 percent of refugees arriving since 2010 have gone to Texas. It was the number one state for refugee resettlement in 2019, accounting for 9 percent of refugees, or 1,389 individuals. California and New York, by comparison, accepted only 6 percent.

Abbott’s move follows President Donald Trump’s executive order, issued in September, which required states to give their consent before more refugees are resettled in their territory. Thirty-nine states have thus far signed on, with the Lone Star state now the lone standout refusing any more arrivals.

Mark Krikorian, executive director of the Center for Immigration Studies, told the Washington Free Beacon that this change was intended "to give states and localities some control over their own destinies." Krikorian declined to comment on the wisdom of Abbott’s decision—"I’m not going to tell people in Texas what to do, that’s up to them"—but emphasized that refugee resettlement is as much as anything a matter of fiscal soundness.

"Some states may want to take refugees," Krikorian said. "That’s okay, if they know what they’re getting in to. In other words, they’re affirming that they understand that the federal government is going to be fobbing off enormous costs on them per person. If they’re okay with that, so be it."

Abbot in 2016 withdrew his state from direct participation in the federal Refugee Resettlement Program, citing the Obama administration’s failure to provide him assurances that resettled refugees would not pose a threat. Abbott said then that while Texas would still accept refugees, they would do so "without the state acting as the middleman between federal dollars and local resettlement agencies." Non-state actors have since continued to work directly with the federal government to resettle refugees, a practice that will likely end thanks to Abbott’s decision.

Gywneth Paltrow Is Selling A Candle That Smells Like Her Vagina

Actress Gwyneth Paltrow is selling a candle that smells like her vagina at $75 a pop for her lifestyle and wellness company Goop. The name of the candle is none other than, you guessed it, “This Smells Like My Vagina.”

Paltrow first came across a scent that she said reminded her of the smell of her own vagina, she claims. The scent was then finalized for the “This Smells Like My Vagina” candle, which reportedly sold out within hours of its test run.

“This candle started as a joke between perfumer Douglas Little and GP — the two were working on a fragrance, and she blurted out, ‘Uhhh … this smells like a vagina,’” Goop outlined.

The smell then “evolved into a funny, gorgeous, sexy, and beautifully unexpected scent,” according to the company.

“That turned out to be perfect as a candle — we did a test run … and it sold out within hours,” Goop bragged. “It’s a blend of geranium, citrusy bergamot, and cedar absolutes juxtaposed with Damask rose and ambrette seed that puts us in mind of fantasy, seduction, and a sophisticated warmth.”

Goop, clearly, is not a traditional brand. In 2018, for example, the wellness company settled a six-figure lawsuit surrounding their “vagina eggs,” which were prompted to help regulate females’ hormones and negate menstrual cramps.

“It turns out, contrary to Goop’s advice, shoving a large egg made out of a porous mineral into the recesses of your lady-regions may not be the best treatment for conditions like endometriosis,” The Daily Wire reported. “Apparently, Goop knew — or, according to a complaint filed by the California consumer protection office, Goop should have known before they marketed this product, as well as a ‘flower essence’ they claimed treated depression, to consumers on their website.”

“The health and money of Santa Clara County residents should never be put at risk by misleading advertising,” the attorney for the California consumer protection office said in a statement. “We will vigilantly protect consumers against companies that promise health benefits without the support of good science … or any science.”

Paltrow again made headlines for her “progressive” ways last month, this time for gifting herself a vibrator for Christmas.

The Daily Wire reported on the ad:

After Gwyneth shakes herself up a couple of Martinis, the narrator says “someone’s double-fisting” as she struts through the kitchen with her libations.

“The holidays are work, so don’t be afraid to ask for help with lighting, and food, and style, and hair, and hair, and hair,” the narrator cheekily continues. “Find your favorite look, or eleven of them. Look fabulous in each one, and get super high… In your heels, of course.”

The ad then takes a salacious turn by reminding people to treat themselves to a little self-service, but only after doing “something for others.”

“Do something for others but don’t forget about No. 1,” the narrator says as Paltrow pulls a vibrator from a Christmas stocking and keeps it for herself. “Yes, that is a vibrator.”

The ad finishes with the narrator wishing everyone a “happy holidays from G. Label.”

Kerry on $1.7 Billion Payment to Iran: ‘We Gave Them a Little Bit of Money’

Former secretary of state John Kerry on Friday referred to the $1.7 billion payment the U.S. made to Iran in 2016 as a "little bit of money."

Discussing President Donald Trump’s claims that the Obama administration helped fund the Iranian regime’s terror initiatives, Kerry told CNN that the Obama administration saved American taxpayers from accruing interest by settling old debt when it did.

"We gave them a little bit of money that was released in that period of time, not as part of the nuclear arrangement," Kerry said. "But the fact is the [Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps] had all the money it wanted. The IRGC wasn’t starving at that point in time, and in fact, Iran owed billions upon billions of dollars. Most of that money went to pay off their debts and to facilitate their economic initiatives."

Kerry admitted in 2016 that the billions in sanctions relief Iran got under the nuclear deal would go partly to financing terrorism.

"Money is fungible in any budget," he said on Friday.

The Obama administration paid Iran $400 million, plus an additional $1.3 billion in interest from taxpayer funds, ostensibly to settle a dispute over military equipment Iran purchased but never received following the shah’s fall in 1979. Critics, however, described the payment as a "ransom" to secure the freedom of American hostages being held by the Tehran regime.

"Obama officials are the last people on earth who are pretending that the $1.7 billion wasn’t a ransom payment," one foreign policy consultant who worked with Congress on the nuclear deal told the Washington Free Beacon at the time. "Everyone else knows what happened, which is that we rewarded Iranian hostage takers."

The Obama administration denied the cash was a ransom, but the State Department later admitted it delayed the initial $400 million payment as "leverage" to secure the release of three prisoners held by Iran.

As part of the nuclear deal Kerry brokered, Iran received $150 billion in sanctions relief in the form of unfrozen assets held in banks around the globe. The U.S. Treasury Department estimated Iran had roughly $55 billion left over of that amount after fulfilling its other financial obligations, according to the Washington Post.

Iran is the world’s largest state sponsor of terrorism, backing such proxy groups as Hezbollah in Lebanon and Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

Tensions between the U.S. and Iran hit a boiling point after Trump last week ordered the killing of Iranian general Qassem Soleimani, the terrorist leader of the IRGC’s elite Quds Force. Iran retaliated with missile attacks on U.S. air bases in Iraq this week, although no Americans were killed or injured.

The U.S. and its allies also say Iran is responsible for bringing down a Ukrainian airliner with a surface-to-air missile it fired during its onslaught against Iraq, killing all 176 aboard.

Iran Bulldozed Plane Crash Site Before Outside Investigators Arrived

CBS News reported on Friday that Iranian “scavengers” have “scrubbed” the site where a Ukrainian passenger jet came down outside Tehran before outside investigators could examine the evidence. “Virtually all debris” was removed before outsiders were allowed on the scene.

While CBS primarily complained about “scavengers” randomly plucking debris from the site and highlighted the inexplicable lack of security, U.S. Ambassador to Germany Richard Grenell called the Iranian regime out for deliberately destroying evidence, linking to German-language reports about bulldozers on the scene:

CBS reports indicated large portions of the downed aircraft’s fuselage have been removed from the site, which would be difficult to explain as the work of random scavengers rushing to grab a few souvenirs.

Iranian Ambassador to the United Kingdom Hamid Baeidinejad on Friday denied bulldozers were clearing the crash site, even though they have been captured in photographs and video recordings.

Furthermore, Iranian media outlets have posted photos of objects removed from the crash site and neatly arranged for convenient display.

At a news conference on Friday, Iranian officials displayed what they claimed was one of the “black box” flight recorders recovered from the aircraft and said it could take “one or two months” to recover its data, while a full investigation of the incident could take “one or two years” to complete.

The regime originally said it would not share the black boxes with U.S. officials or the American manufacturer of the plane, Boeing, but later it appeared to back away from that position and indicated it might be willing to share the boxes, or at least the data it claims to extract from them, with foreign investigators.

“Generally speaking, Iran has the potential and know-how to decode the black box. Everybody knows that,” Iranian Civil Aviation Authority chief Ali Abedzadeh boasted to CNN on Thursday, perhaps sensitive to how Iran’s intransigence might give the contrary impression.

“The black box of this very Ukrainian Boeing 737 is damaged. Ukrainian Aviation experts arrived here in Tehran today. We had a session with them. From tomorrow they will start decoding the data,” Abedzadeh said. He did not elaborate on what “very Ukrainian” means or explain how Ukrainian technicians might have altered the flight recorder in a way that makes it difficult to read.

Intelligence agencies around the world announced on Thursday that the plane was very likely destroyed by an Iranian surface-to-air missile, specifically a Russian-built SA-15. U.S. officials implied satellite intelligence helped them reach this determination quickly. Some video footage leaked out of Iran appears to show an object rising rapidly from the ground and impacting the plane, causing it to burst into flames. The regime in Tehran continues to insist the plane crashed due to a mysterious mechanical failure.

Arizona Woman Defies City Order, Continues To Fly ‘Trump 2020’ Flag

Tawney Baccellia of Prescott Valley, Arizona, wanted to show her support for President Donald Trump by flying a “Trump 2020 – Keep America Great” flag in her backyard, but some of her neighbors took offense and voiced their objection to the city, which is now threatening stiff fines.

Baccellia began flying the banner in early November below a “thin blue line” American flag, which is meant to show her support for the police.

In late December, the Arizona woman and her husband received a letter from Prescott Valley — a city of about 45,000 people located 90 miles north of Phoenix — stating they had 10 days to remove “prohibited signage” from their flagpole or face a $100 fine.

According to Baccellia, the fine will continue to compound the longer they do not comply.

The portion of the city code cited to her prohibits “animated” or “flashing” signs, with animated meaning it changes positions, as flags of course do when the wind blows.

Baccellia also has a light on her flagpole to keep it illuminated at night.

In addition to the city ordinances cited, Arizona state law provides that residents only have the right to post political signs up to 60 days before a primary election and until 15 days after the general election.

Baccellia’s husband called the city official listed on the letter who informed him the offending sign was the couple’s “Trump 2020” flag, adding the city had received some complaints about it.

Baccellia told The Western Journal her response was to go purchase a new Trump flag to replace the one she had been flying, which was fraying.

“This is who I support. This is what I want on my flag and it’s in my backyard,” she said.

Baccellia posted the city’s letter directing her to take down the flag on her personal Facebook page, as well as local community pages, which she said “blew up” with comments of support.

Prescott Valley is in Yavapai County, which Trump carried by over 30 percentage points in 2016.

Baccellia received a strong ally in her cause in Prescott Valley Mayor Kell Palguta.

Palguta wrote on Facebook late last month, “I want to thank Tawney Baccellia for making a post about recently getting a notice from Code Enforcement to remove a second flag she had on her flagpole because it was currently against Town Code.”

“I want everyone to know I am 100 percent against the Code as it is written and will be working with Council and Staff to change it,” he added.

Palguta told The Western Journal that a flag and a sign are two different things, meaning the state law prohibition regarding political signs should not apply.

Additionally, he anticipates the city code will be changed when the Prescott Valley council meets next month to make clear that Baccellia has a First Amendment right to fly her Trump flag.

“It’s not about the content of the flag. It has to do with the person’s right to fly it. … You can’t take that away from someone, and that is what the town is trying to do,” he explained.

Palguta, who is a diehard Arizona Cardinals fan, offered the example of his neighbor flying a Seattle Seahawks flag.

“I hate the Seahawks, but in no way am I ever going to tell him he needs to take it down because it’s not the right flag,” Palguta said. “That’s ridiculous. And guess what? I still say ‘Hi’ to him, and we’re still friends.”

“That’s what America’s about,” he added.

Baccellia intends to keep her flag flying and is hopeful the city ordinance will be changed before Prescott Valley levies any fines against her, which for now appears to be on hold.

She said the mayor has offered “amazing support.”

Palguta is optimistic all will work out in Baccellia’s favor in the end.

“I swore an oath to uphold the Constitution,” he said. “And the last time I checked the Constitution goes above the town code of Prescott Valley.”

Saying Trump Puts Americans in Danger, Rapper Asks 3rd-Most-Dangerous Country on the Planet – Nigeria – for Citizenship

Are you one of those people who buy into those #WWIII memes that popped up on Twitter after the United States killed Iranian Maj. Gen. Qassem Soleimani in a drone strike?

Rapper Cardi B is.

In fact, she’s decided she’s going to ask for citizenship in the third-most-dangerous country in the world, because that’s a great place to hide out from World War III.

Mrs. B — known legally as Belcalis Almánzar — made the announcement Friday on Twitter as tensions ratcheted up.

“Naaaaa these memes are f—in [laughing emojis] but s— ain’t no joke! Specially being from New York,” the rapper, best known for “Bodak Yellow” and “I Like It,” tweeted.

TRENDING: Comedian George Lopez on Iran’s ‘Bounty’ on Trump: ‘We’ll Do It for Half’

“Its sad this man is putting Americans live in danger,” she continued. “Dumbest move Trump did till date …I’m filing for my Nigerian citizenship.”

Granted, Cardi B isn’t what economists might call a “rational agent.”

She’s been in trouble for admitting that, before her rapper days, she drugged and robbed men for money. (Her defense for this, inexplicably, was that the men were “conscious, willing and aware” of being drugged and robbed.)

Do you think Cardi B will move to Nigeria?

100% (1 Votes)

0% (0 Votes)

As a teen, she was a member of the Bloods gang.

She’s fond of Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont — going as far as to interview him — yet she went on an epic, profane rant about how she didn’t know where her tax money was going.

She’s also a self-described political science junkie, and who wouldn’t take her opinions seriously?

Here’s her explaining why Franklin Delano Roosevelt was her favorite president: “[H]e helped us get over the Depression, all while he was in a wheelchair. Like, this man was suffering from polio at the time of his presidency, and yet all he was worried about was trying to make America great — make America great again for real. He’s the real ‘Make America Great Again,’ because if it wasn’t for him, old people wouldn’t even get Social Security.”

A very little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing.

RELATED: Rapper & New Christian Kanye West Now Taking Public Stand Against Pornography

All of which is to say that maybe we shouldn’t be taking Cardi B too seriously — and yet, this thing got reported like it was no one’s business, to the point where a Nigerian government official responded to her request.

“As one in charge of the Diaspora for Ngr, We can’t wait to receive you again. Our doors are open, sister,” Abike Dabiri-Erewa said.

As for the “again” part, Cardi B has previously performed in Nigeria, according to the Daily Mail. One assumes she didn’t exactly see the whole country or even a sliver of it, and Dabiri-Erewa probably didn’t include the pamphlet disclosing that the country is one of the most dangerous in the world for expatriates.

InterNations’ 2019 survey of expatriate life included a safety and security category in which “respondents rated three factors including peacefulness, personal safety and political stability. The results were compiled to create a ranking of the most dangerous places to live,” Forbes explained.

Nigeria came in third, after South Africa and Brazil.

“We are not really free, cannot walk on the streets, cannot mingle with the Nigerians. There is always the possibility of danger,” a Hungarian expatriate said.

Meanwhile, a Rwandan expatriate talked about “the feeling of uncertainty. Almost anything can and might happen to me, anytime, anywhere.”

Now, granted, Cardi B has a lot of means to buy herself a lot of security. Perhaps she doesn’t want to “mingle with the Nigerians.” She’s also a former member of the Bloods who says she used to drug and rob men, so perhaps she’s used to and is willing to accept a certain amount of this kind of danger.

Still, it’s not exactly the best place to hide out from a war.

Nigeria wasn’t in the top 10 most dangerous in the Institute for Economics and Peace Global Peace Index for 2018, but it was No. 16, right in between North Korea and Lebanon. It is, in other words, sandwiched by a country that’s probably the odds-on leader for the nation most likely to be involved in a nuclear war and a country that’s overrun with Iranian proxies.

So, her dislike of Donald Trump is so reflexive her first thought is she’s safer in Nigeria — home of Boko Haram, the Islamic terrorist organization we’ve all kind of forgotten about and the likely culprit in a roadside bombing Monday that killed at least 30, according to Deutsche Welle.

The militant group is seeking to establish an Islamic state in Nigeria, which has the largest Muslim population in West Africa at more than 80 million people.

World War III is not going to happen. Cardi B is still much safer here than practically anywhere else in the world. That’s especially true when that somewhere else is Nigeria. This isn’t, as Cardi B is fond of saying, a money move.

But then that’s hardly the point. Any time Celebrity X says he or she is moving to Country Y because of Thing Z that Donald Trump did, you can just put the equation in parentheses and multiply it by zero. That’s how you figure out the percent chance they’re going to be loading up the U-Haul millionaire special and decamping from Beverly Hills to their country of choice.

Cardi B deserves a high grade for originality for picking Nigeria. Usually, it’s Canada or Sweden, something like that. Props for picking a country that’s 158th out of 189 countries in the Human Development Index ranking.

It shows, if nothing else, an impressive disregard for anything aside from a personal animus against the current administration.

President Donald Trump said Wednesday that funding for the missiles fired at military bases in Iraq on Tuesday night was “made available” by the Obama administration.

Trump comments at the White House came one day after Iran fired roughly 15 ballistic missiles into Iraq.

Eleven of them hit the Ain al-Asad Air Base and Erbil military base, Fox News reported, which house U.S. troops.

A U.S. military spokesman for Central Command said four of the missiles missed their targets.

According to Trump, the missiles fired at the bases were funded by money the Obama administration allowed Iran to obtain.

TRENDING: Comedian George Lopez on Iran’s ‘Bounty’ on Trump: ‘We’ll Do It for Half’

“The missiles fired last night at us and our allies were paid for with the funds made available by the last administration,” Trump said, according to the U.K. Daily Mail.

The president was referring to the Obama administration-negotiated Iran nuclear deal, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, which Trump withdrew from in 2018.

The JCPOA, which included five other countries in addition to the U.S. and Iran, permitted between $100 billion and $150 billion in overseas Iranian assets to be unfrozen.

In 2016, the Obama administration also allowed $1.7 billion in cash to be flown to the Iranian regime.

“The very defective JCPOA expires shortly, anyway, and gives Iran a clear and quick path to nuclear breakout,” Trump said, as CNN reported.

“Iran must abandon its nuclear ambitions and end its support for terrorism,” he added.

“We must all work together toward making a deal with Iran that makes the world a safer and more peaceful place,” the president said.

Trump did note that despite the Iranian missile attacks, there were no casualties.

“The American people should be extremely grateful and happy” that no one was harmed, he said.

“Iran appears to be standing down, which is a good thing for all parties concerned and a very good thing for the world,” Trump said.

“To the people and leaders of Iran, we want you to have a future and a great future, one that you deserve,” the president added. “One of prosperity at home and harmony with the nations of the world.”

Iran Plane Crash Takes Dark Turn as Islamic Republic Refuses To Hand Over Black Boxes

Iran is now refusing to hand over the black boxes from a Boeing 737 passenger jet that went down in the Islamic Republic, supporting theories that the country was involved in the disaster.

Ali Abedzadeh, the head of Iran’s civil aviation agency, confirmed that the flight recorders would not be handed over to Boeing or the United States, the Persian-language news agency Mehr News reported.

“We will not give the black box to the manufacturer and the Americans,” Abedzadeh announced Wednesday.

The passenger plane, which was carrying 176 people, crashed with no survivors earlier the same day.

The Ukrainian-owned 737 went down shortly after takeoff.

Without the plane’s black boxes, which record vital information during flight, it might be impossible to confirm what exactly caused the plane to fall from the sky.

Although Iran insists the plane was downed by mechanical issues, the crash came at a time of heightened tension following a U.S. drone strike that killed Iranian Gen. Qassem Soleimani and Iran’s launch of ballistic missiles in response.

Many have speculated that an anti-aircraft gunner with an itchy trigger finger might be behind the deaths.

Video of the crash shows the plane engulfed in flames before finally slamming into the ground.

Although it’s unclear what the cause of the plane’s crash was, some speculated that it could be the fault of Iranian air defense systems that may have mistaken a civil aircraft for an American warplane.

The timing of the crash itself is highly suspect. News of the accident broke as the region reeled from a salvo of Iranian missiles fired at two Iraqi airbases known to house U.S. troops.

So far, there have been no confirmed casualties as a result of the missile strikes.

RELATED: Saying Trump Puts Americans in Danger, Rapper Asks 3rd-Most-Dangerous Country on the Planet – Nigeria – for Citizenship

In an effort to prevent more deaths from any possible misidentification, U.S. civil pilots have been instructed to steer clear of the region.

The Federal Aviation Administration issued a set of flight restrictions aiming to keep civil aviation operators away from the airspace over Iran, Iraq and surrounding areas.

It remains to be seen if the 737 crash was simply caused by a fatal mechanical flaw that came at the wrong time, or was the result of a military blunder.

Spare Change Collected in Baby Bottles Makes Couple’s Adoption Dreams Come True

A Mississippi family looking to adopt a baby had their dream come true after receiving baby bottles filled with spare change donated by friends, colleagues, and strangers.

Rachel King and her husband Wesley tried for years to have a child before making a decision to adopt. They eventually decided to host a baby bottle fundraiser in March 2019 to raise enough money for the staggering cost of adoption.

According to the website American Adoptions, an average American adoption costs about $40,000 to $50,000.

They were at the hospital to welcome their nephew into the world when they received a call stating that a birth mother had chosen them.

“It was such a God thing. We were holding him and found out we were going to be parents the same day,” Rachel King told WAPT about the child, whom they named Jon Anderson King.

“During the adoption, we learned that I was pregnant,” Rachel King said. “We are expecting another baby boy due in February.” The Kings decided to plan a gender reveal party when Rachel learned she was pregnant.

She added that she would never have dreamed that she would be able to have another child.

“We were told we had 0% chance,” Rachel King said. “Then all of a sudden, it’s like once we said, yes to God and his plan for us, it’s like, ‘Now that you finally trust me, we’re going to give you double the blessing.’”

The Kings’ baby boys will be born four months apart. The couple hopes that their story inspires others to consider adoption and those expecting to become parents someday never to give up.
