Biden State Media Appointee Advocated Using Propaganda Against Americans

Richard Stengel, the top state media appointee for US President-elect Joe Biden’s transition team (namely, the official US Agency for Global Media), has enthusiastically defended the use of propaganda against Americans.

"My old job at the State Department was what people used to joke as the chief propagandist," Stengel said in 2018. "I’m not against propaganda. Every country does it, and they have to do it to their own population. And I don’t necessarily think it’s that awful."

Richard "Rick" Stengel was the longest serving under-secretary of state for public diplomacy and public affairs in US history. At the State Department under President Barack Obama, Stengel boasted that he "started the only entity in government, non-classified entity, that combated Russian disinformation." That institution was known as the Global Engagement Center, and it amounted to a massive vehicle for advancing US government propaganda around the world.

A committed crusader in what he openly describes as a global "information war," Stengel has proudly proclaimed his dedication to the carefully management of the public’s access to information.

Stengel outlined his worldview in a book he published this June, entitled "Information Wars: How We Lost the Global Battle Against Disinformation and What We Can Do About It."

Stengel has proposed "rethinking" the First Amendment that guarantees the freedom of speech and press. In 2018, he stated, "Having once been almost a First Amendment absolutist, I have really moved my position on it, because I just think for practical reasons in society, we have to kind of rethink some of those things."

The Biden transition team’s selection of a censorial infowarrior for its top state media position comes as a concerted suppression campaign takes hold on social media. The wave of online censorship has been overseen by US intelligence agencies, the State Department, and Silicon Valley corporations that maintain multibillion-dollar contracts with the US government.

As the state-backed censorship dragnet expands, independent media outlets increasingly find themselves in the crosshairs. In the past year, social media platforms have purged hundreds of accounts of foreign news publications, journalists, activists, and government officials from countries targeted by the United States for regime change.

Stengel’s appointment appears to be the clearest signal of a coming escalation by the Biden administration of the censorship and suppression of online media that is seen to threaten US imperatives abroad.

From Obama admin’s "chief propagandist" to Russiagate-peddling MSNBC pundit

Before being appointed as the US State Department’s "chief propagandist" in 2013, Richard Stengel was a managing editor of TIME Magazine.

In the Obama administration, Stengel not only created the Global Engagement Center propaganda vehicle; he also boasted that he "led the creation of English for All, a government-wide effort to promote the teaching of English around the world."

After leaving the State Department in 2016, Stengel became a strategic advisor to Snap Inc., the company that runs the social media apps Snapchat and Bitmoji.

Stengel also found time for a fellowship at the Atlantic Council, a think tank closely linked to NATO and the Biden camp which has received funding from the US government, Britain, the European Union, and NATO itself, along with a host of Western weapons manufacturers, fossil fuel corporations, Gulf monarchies, and Big Tech juggernauts.

Stengel worked closely with the Atlantic Council’s Digital Forensic Research Lab, a dubious organization that has fueled efforts to censor independent media outlets in the name of fighting "disinformation."

But Stengel is perhaps most well known as a regular political analyst on MSNBC in the Donald Trump era. On the network, he fueled Russiagate conspiracy theories, portraying the Republican president as a useful idiot of Russia and claiming Trump had a "one-sided bromance" with Vladimir Putin.

Stengel left MSNBC this November to join Biden’s presidential transition. The campaign announced that he was tapped to lead the Biden-Harris agency review team for the United States Agency for Global Media (USAGM).

USAGM is a state media propaganda organization that has its origins in a Cold War vehicle created by the CIA to spread disinformation against the Soviet Union and communist China. (The agency was previously called the Broadcasting Board of Governors, or BBG, until it rebranded in 2018.)

USAGM states on its website that its most important mission is to "Be consistent with the broad foreign policy objectives of the United States."

An agency shakeup this year produced revelations that USAGM provided clandestine assistance to separatist activists during the protests that consumed Hong Kong in 2019. The program earmarked secure communications assistance for protesters and $2 million in "rapid response" payouts for anti-China activists.

Richard Stengel’s "obsessive" crusade against Russian "disinformation"

When Richard Stengel referred to himself as the State Department’s "chief propagandist," advocated the use of propaganda against the American people, and proposed to "rethink" the First Amendment, he was participating in a May 3, 2018 panel discussion at the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR).

During the CFR event, titled "Political Disruptions: Combating Disinformation and Fake News," Stengel hyped up the threat of supposed "Russian disinformation," a vague term that is increasingly used as an empty signifier for any narrative that offends the sensibilities of Washington’s foreign policy establishment.

Stengel stated that he was "obsessed with" fighting "disinformation," and made it clear he has a particular obsession with Moscow, accusing "the Russians" of engaging in "full spectrum" disinformation.

Joining him on stage was political scientist Kelly M. Greenhill, who mourned that alternative media platforms publish "things that seem like they could be true… that’s the sphere where it’s particularly difficult to debunk them… it’s this gray region, this gray zone, where it’s not traditional disinformation, but a combination of misinformation and play on rumors, conspiracy theories, sort of gray propaganda, that’s where I think the nub or the crux of the problem lies."

Stengel approved, adding, "By the way those terms, the gray zone, are all from Russian active measures, that they’ve been doing for a million years."

The panelists made no effort to hide their disdain for independent and foreign media outlets. Stengel stated clearly that a "news cartel" of mainstream corporate media outlets had long dominated US society, but he bemoaned that those "cartels don’t have hegemony like they used to."

Stengel made it clear that his mission is to counter the alternative perspectives given a voice by foreign media platforms that challenge the US-dominated media landscape.

"The bad actors use journalistic objectivity against us. And the Russians in particular are smart about this," Stengel grumbled.

He singled out Russia’s state-funded media network, RT, lamenting that "Vladimir Putin, when they launched Russia Today, said it was an antidote to the American English hegemony over the world media system. That’s how people saw it."

Ben Decker, a research fellow at the Misinformation Project at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government, lamented that "RT is invading every weekly finance media space."

But Decker was cheered by the proliferation of US oligarchs committed to retaking control of the narrative. "In America and across the world," he stated, "the donor community is very eager to address this problem, and very eager to work with communities of researchers, academics, journalists, etc. to target this problem."

"I think that there is an appetite to solve this from the top down," he continued, urging the many academics in the audience "to apply for grant money" in order to fight this Russian "disinformation."

The CFR panel culminated with an African audience member rising from the crowd and confronting Stengel: "Because what is happening in America is what the United States flipped on the Global South and in the Third World, which we lived with, for many, many years, in terms of a master narrative that was and still is propaganda," the man declared.

Rather than respond, Stengel rudely ignored the question and made his way hurriedly for the exit: "You know what, I hate last questions. Don’t you? I never, I usually just want to end something before the last question."

The video of the revealing confrontation caused such a furor that CFR’s YouTube account disabled comments and made the video unlisted. It cannot be found in a search on Google or YouTube; it can only be found with the direct link.

Bartiromo: NYC ‘a Mess’ — People ‘Afraid’ to Be Here Because of Uptick in Crime

On Monday, Fox Business Network host Maria Bartiromo slammed New York City as the city sees a mass exodus amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic and the uptick in crime. According to the New York Post, almost 300,000 residents filed for a change of address in response to the strict mandates during the pandemic.

Bartiromo said on Fox News Channel’s “America’s Newsroom” that New York has been a “mess.” She added that people are “afraid” to be in New York City because of the policies put in place by Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) and Mayor Bill de Blasio (D) that have resulted in increased crime and homelessness.

“It’s a mess, Dana,” Bartiromo outlined. “It is an important story we need to cover. You are seeing people leave new york city in droves, and yes, you can take what Kathryn Wylde is saying as part of the reason, but there are other things as well. This is a security issue. People are afraid to go back to New York because the homelessness population has skyrocketed, and then, of course, we’ve got the bail reform that is in place — meaning that if you are arrested, you get checked in, you get processed, and then you are right back on the streets. You no longer have to come up with bail money. So, criminals are getting processed going right back on the street, and that is scaring people. You are seeing crime shoot up. Shootings are up. Robberies are up in New York City. So, it has as much to do as the fact that we don’t have the services we used to have because of COVID as it does policy.”

“These are policies from Andrew Cuomo and the mayor of New York, and as a result, you are seeing crime numbers go higher, and that is one of the reasons people are fleeing New York,” she continued. “Not to mention taxes. They are expecting taxes to go higher. And of course, we know that Mayor de Blasio has already raised taxes. It has gotten very expensive, and safety issues are real, Dana.”

Senate GOP Set for Round 2 Fighting with Dorsey, Zuckerberg

GOP senators are ready to go on the attack against two Big Tech CEOs at a Senate hearing tomorrow about how online censorship influenced the election.
The hearing, entitled “Breaking the News: Censorship, Suppression, and the 2020 Election,” will feature testimony from Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey and Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, and Senate Republicans are ready for round two.
The timing for this hearing is fitting, considering Twitter and Facebook’s constant censorship of posts related to the election, especially the Hunter Biden scandal.
According to the motion made by Chairman Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC), the CEOs will testify about:
“(1) the suppression and/or censorship of two news articles from the New York Post titled ‘Smoking-gun email reveals how Hunter Biden introduced Ukrainian businessman to VP dad’ and ‘Emails reveal how Hunter Biden tried to cash in big on behalf of family with Chinese firm,’
“(2) any other content moderation policies, practices, or actions that may interfere with or influence elections for federal office, and
“(3) any other recent determinations to temporarily reduce distribution of material pending fact-checker review and/or block and mark material as potentially unsafe.”
In a previous hearing in the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation, Dorsey and Zuckerberg joined Google CEO Sundar Pichai, and were thoroughly grilled regarding the censorship of the aforementioned New York Post story.
“Preventing a news story from being shared is what China does on Weibo and it’s what Twitter did to the New York Post. Tomorrow, I look forward to hearing from Facebook and Twitter CEOs about how they censored and suppressed voices during the 2020 election,” said Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) in a statement to NewsBusters.
As CNet pointed out, “An interesting wrinkle in the proceedings will be the presence of Vice President-elect Kamala Harris, a California Democrat. Harris has close ties to Silicon Valley and is friendly with Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg. Still, expect Harris, who has supported laws on digital privacy, online harassment and app-based gig worker protections, to go tough on the witnesses.”
Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) celebrated the Committee’s decision to subpoena Dorsey and Zuckerberg on Twitter in October, saying: “#BigTech CEOs are drunk on power & must be held accountable for interfering in this election. Last week I led calls to subpoena @Twitter & @Facebook’s CEOs to testify before @senjudiciary. Today my colleagues passed that subpoena. We will get answers for the American people.”
Conservatives are under attack. Contact Facebook headquarters at 1-650-308-7300 and Twitter at (415) 222-9670, and contact your state representatives and demand that Big Tech be held to account to mirror the First Amendment while providing transparency, clarity on “hate speech” and equal footing for conservatives. If you have been censored, contact us at the Media Research Center contact form, and help us hold Big Tech accountable.

Michigan House Republicans Plan Gretchen Whitmer Impeachment

Several Republican members of the Michigan House of Representatives are proposing articles of impeachment against Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D).

State Rep. Matt Maddock (R) announced via Parler that he is joining with Reps. Daire Rendon (R), Beau LaFave (R), Ryan Berman (R), and Shane Hernandez (R) on the effort. He said incoming legislators Ken Borton (R) and Steve Carra (R) are supportive, as well.

State Sens. Dan Lauwers (R) and Lana Theis (R) are also backing impeachment, Maddock said.

Maddock posted a list of reasons for why he believed Whitmer should be impeached:

  • Ignored court orders.
  • Violated our Constitutional rights.
  • Completely ignored due process and the legislature.
  • Weaponized contact tracing databases to aid democrat campaigns.
  • Using our kids as political pawns and denied special needs students who depend on the services that occur during in-person classes. Caused the unnecessary death of thousands of our vulnerable elderly who died alone and scared in nursing homes.

In Michigan, the House of Representatives initiates impeachment and a majority vote is required. In the next legislative session, Republicans will have a 58-52 majority, according to Mlive.

Three representatives would be appointed to prosecute the impeachment case in the Senate. Two-thirds of senators must vote to convict the governor in order for her to be removed. Republicans hold a 22-16 majority in that chamber, Ballotpedia reported, so at least three Democrats would need to vote affirmatively for removal.

On Sunday, Whitmer issued a string of new coronavirus-related orders and dubbed the actions a three-week “pause.”

Effective Wednesday, Whitmer shuttered in-person learning for high schoolers, arguing that population has the most contact with their peers. Amateur organized sports, including the current high school playoff seasons, are also “paused.”

The order also bans indoor dining at restaurants and bars. Theaters, movie theaters, stadiums, arenas, bowling centers, ice skating rinks, indoor water parks, bingo halls, casinos, and arcades also must close. Group fitness classes have been suspended.

MUST-WATCH: New GOP Congresswoman-Elect Who Grew Up In Ukraine Blisters Socialism

On Monday, Victoria Spartz, the new GOP congresswoman-elect from Indiana who grew up in Ukraine, gave a blistering attack on socialism while offering a powerful defense of America, stating, “I grew up in socialism. James Woods exposes dozens of local news shows reading from the same (Biden) script

It’s no secret that I admire James Woods for his insight, artistry, and vigor. His Twitter account (I don’t yet see him on Parler) is a continuing source of inspiration for its concise, often humorous, commentary on the political scene.

He’s done it again!

This time, with a video that very effectively raises the chilling reality that local TV news across the country has been coopted into dutifully mouthing the same scripts, written to indoctrinate the public with leftist propaganda. In this case, beware of “disinformation” (from you know who), cloaked in self-righteousness. By combining the voices of multiple TV broadcasters on their respective stations into a chorus, with a collage of their images, this tweet exposes a genuine scandal in an impactful way.

Trump Campaign Pushes Back on Media Reports of Changed Pennsylvania Case

The Trump campaign pushed back Sunday night against reports by the Washington Post and others that it had dropped a major part of its case challenging the election results in Pennsylvania.

The Post‘s Jon Swaine and Elise Viebeck reported that the Trump campaign was abandoning the claim that election authorities invalidated over 600,000 votes by barring Trump election observers from watching the count.

That left a much smaller part of the case — namely, that Democratic-run counties allowed voters to “cure” problems with their mailed-in ballots, while Republican counties, following rules laid down by the state legislature, did not.

But Trump campaign legal adviser Jenna Ellis, who appeared on Breitbart News Sunday on Sirius XM Patriot 125 shortly after the Post story came out, disputed its claims.

Other campaign officials added to the criticism of the Post on Twitter.

Politico published a similar story to the Post, triggering a similar response.

Arizona GOP Congressmen Call for Audit of Maricopa County Ballots

A trio of Arizona Republican congressmen — Reps. Andy Biggs, Paul Gosar, and David Schweikert — have called for a “100% audit” of all ballots in Maricopa County due to what the lawmakers described as issues raised regarding the “integrity” of the Grand Canyon state’s “election systems.”

Reps. Biggs (pictured, left), Gosar (pictured,r ight), and Schweikert sent a letter last week to the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors to request the would-be audit’s results to be compared to the current vote totals.

“Americans and Arizonans must have full confidence in our election processes and systems in order to maintain the bedrock of our constitutional republic,” Biggs said in a statement Monday. “Although Arizona conducts elections with far more transparency and accountability than other states, there have been some issues raised about the integrity of some of our election systems within the state. For this reason, I am calling on the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors to go above and beyond to assure the public of the integrity of Maricopa County’s elections. Let’s leave no stone unturned in the pursuit of accountability and transparency.”

The development comes after the Arizona Republican Party filed a lawsuit requesting a hand recount of votes by precinct, accusing Maricopa County of violating the law.

Breitbart News reported Thursday:

The lawsuit, announced on Thursday, demands a hand recount of votes by sampling precincts rather than “voting centers,” which Maricopa County provided in this year’s presidential election. Voting centers allow voters from any precinct to cast their ballots. “There is a fundamental difference between sampling ‘polling centers’ and ‘precincts,’ most notable being the fact that there were only around 175 voting centers in this election but there were 748 precincts,” the Republican Party of Arizona said in a statement, announcing the legal challenge. […] In other words, the Arizona GOP does not believe a hand-count audit of two percent of 175 voting centers is sufficient. Rather, there should be a hand-count audit covering two percent of the 748 precincts.

Dr. Kelli Ward, chairwoman of the Republican Party of Arizona, issued a statement on the lawsuit.

“In the past, voters were assigned a polling place inside their precinct. The Secretary of State Katie Hobbs wrote an election procedures manual stating that now we’re going to a voting center model,” said Ward. “The fact of the matter is, we have to determine whether state statute as it exists is actually supreme to a manual written by a member of the executive branch.”

She added: “We are getting close to recount territory here and we are working — the Republican Party of Arizona with the Trump campaign, with the RNC — to ensure that every legal vote cast is counted in the way that the voter intended. We are fighting for you.”

Former Vice President Joe Biden leads President Donald Trump by 11,038 votes in Maricopa County.

Mass exodus from NYC is happening as New York state to lose $1.4 billion in tax revenue: report

Some extremely worrisome data has recently emerged providing a glimpse into the economic downfall of the real estate market in New York during the coronavirus pandemic.

The New York Post published a report detailing how New Yorkers are fleeing NYC in vast numbers. According to data from the United States Postal Service, more than 300,000 NYC residents have moved out of the Big Apple since the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Post found that 295,103 New Yorkers filed change of address requests from March 1 to Oct. 31. However, the total amount is well over 300,000 once you consider that a single change of address would likely include numerous multiple-person households.

From March through July, there were 244,895 change of address requests to locations outside of New York City, more than double the 101,342 during the same period in 2019.

The postal data shows residents are moving out of the city, but staying in the tri-state area. The top five destinations are: East Hampton, N.Y., (2,769), Jersey City, N.J. (1,821), Southampton, N.Y. (1,398), Hoboken, N.J. (1,204), and Sag Harbor, NY (961). There were 558 people who moved to Greenwich, C.T.

The mass exodus could be derived from a number of reasons, including fear of living in a dense city during a pandemic, stringent COVID-19 restrictions set forth by Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Mayor Bill de Blasio, a summer that saw skyrocketing shootings, and the effects of a mandatory $15 minimum wage.

The lack of real estate sales and apartment rentals have contributed to a massive drop in tax revenue. The Real Estate Board of New York released a report last week that New York City and state have collectively lost $1.4 billion in tax revenue so far this year.

"Investment sales and residential sales year-to-date totaled $34.5 billion, a 50% decline compared to the same time period in 2019, causing a 39% decline in tax revenue," the REBNY reported.

Civil unrest and violent riots plus high coronavirus death totals have hurt the city with tourism. New York City Comptroller Scott Stringer told Market Watch in July, "In the midst of the pandemic, we are beginning to realize that our 62 million [annual] tourists will no longer be in the short term."
