New York Times Published Trump Assassination Fantasy Before Mail Bomb Scare

The New York Times published a fictional story Tuesday that fantasized about President Trump’s assassination at the hands of the Secret Service and a Russian operative — one day before the nation was gripped by news of apparent mail bombs sent to prominent Democratic figures.

In an article published in the New York Times‘ Book Review, five writers conjured up fantasy scenarios about President Trump’s future with the Russia investigation.

One writer, Zoe Sharp (pictured), took liberal fantasizing to the next level and wrote a story that ends with President Trump being assassinated by a Russian agent. The Times’ editors illustrate the piece, titled “How It Ends,” with a Russian flag sticking out of a pistol barrel.

In the story, the Russian attempts to shoot the president, but his gun misfires. A Secret Service agent then offers his own pistol to the Russian:

The Russian waited until they were a few steps past before he drew the gun. He sighted on the center of the president’s back, and squeezed the trigger.

The Makarov misfired.

The Secret Service agent at the president’s shoulder heard the click, spun into a crouch. He registered the scene instantly, drawing his own weapon with razor-edge reflexes.

The Russian tasted failure. He closed his eyes and waited to pay the cost.

It did not come.

He opened his eyes. The Secret Service agent stood before him, presenting his Glock, butt first.

“Here,” the agent said politely. “Use mine. …” [emphasis added]

This assassination fantasy was published just one day before the media exploded with criticism for President Trump’s rhetoric after a series of apparent mail bombs sent to many Democrat political figures Wednesday, including one sent to CNN’s New York office.

Media and entertainment figures fantasizing about the assassination of President Trump has become disturbingly common.

Last year, actor Johnny Depp joked, “When was the last time an actor assassinated a president?” He later apologized. Rapper Rick Ross released a song in 2016 with the lyric, “Assassinate Trump like I’m Zimmerman.”

A Julius Caesar play in Central Park featured the assassination of a faux Donald Trump-figure. And pop star Madonna said at the Women’s March that she had fantasized about “blowing up” the White House.

“Yes, I’m angry. Yes, I’m outraged. Yes, I have thought an awful lot about blowing up the White House, but I know that this won’t change anything,” she said.

And the left’s violent fantasies are not limited to Trump–anyone they disagree with can be targeted.

Republican Sen. Rand Paul, who was at the GOP baseball practice when it was targeted by left-wing mass shooter James Hodgkinson, said that Hodgkinson was screaming, “This is for health care!”

“He also had a list of conservative legislators–Republicans–in his pocket, that he was going to kill,” Paul also said.

Corporate media’s role in this downward slide cannot be ignored, either.

MSNBC’s Nicolle Wallace has repeatedly fantasized about violence toward people she disagrees with, previously talking on air about Sarah Sanders getting choked and Trump getting punched in the face.

Further, CNN has excused and whitewashed the violence of Antifa, time and time and time again.

Finally, as Breitbart News has meticulously chronicled, there are several hundred incidents of Trump supporting Americans being targeted for violence, harassment, and intimidation by the left.

Trump Threatens to Treat California Like He’s Treating Mexico, Honduras, El Salvador — Cut Aid

President Donald Trump is proving that he’s not afraid to take a tough stance by threatening to take away federal aid to California in the same way he’s recently threatened to take aid from countries like Honduras and El Salvador.

Last week, Trump threatened to take aid from Central American countries who refused to do anything about the caravan of migrants that was surging toward Mexico and inevitably the United States.

“We have today informed the countries of Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador that if they allow their citizens, or others, to journey through their borders and up to the United States, with the intention of entering our country illegally, all payments made to them will STOP,” Trump tweeted.

TRENDING: Huge: FL Dem Gillum Took FBI Corruption Bait, Used Family as Excuse When Caught

Unfortunately, the caravan was not stopped, but Trump proved he was a man of his word by standing by his tough statement.

“Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador were not able to do the job of stopping people from leaving their country and coming illegally to the U.S.,” Trump tweeted on Monday. “We will now begin cutting off, or substantially reducing, the massive foreign aid routinely given to them.”

Do you agree with Trump’s tough stance on California?

Now Trump is giving California the same treatment — but not because of immigration.

Speaking at Tuesday’s White House State Leadership Conference, Trump brought up California’s mismanagement of its forests, which has led to forest fires.

“We’re tired of giving California hundreds and hundreds of millions of dollars all the time for their forest fires, when you wouldn’t have them if they managed their forests properly,” Trump said.

Trump went on to talk about how environmentalists are stopping proper management.

“And the environmentalists are, you know, doing something very bad. They won’t let us take the logs. They won’t let us take the dead trees. It’s all a mess,” Trump said.

RELATED: Massive Anti-Dem Message Written in California Sky

This is a problem the Trump administration has talked about in the past.

Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke criticized “environmentalist terrorist groups” in August.

“We have been held hostage by these environmental terrorist groups that have not allowed public access — that have refused to allow (the) harvest of timber,” Zinke told Breitbart.

Trump said that California may lose federal aid if it doesn’t manage its forests properly.

“So, California, get on the ball. Because we’re not going to hand you any more money. It’s ridiculous, OK?” Trump said.

It’s great that we have a president who will take a tough stance when necessary.

The open borders group behind the illegal alien caravan marching to the US border is funded by several liberal organizations including Soros’s Open Society.

The Pueblo Sin Fronteras (“People Without Borders”) is a project of La Familia Latina Unida, a Chicago, Illinois-based 501(c)(4) illegal immigration advocacy organization formed in 2001 by Elvira Arellano, an activist for immigrants living illegally in the United States.

The group is part of the CARA Coalition and is funded by a number of major left-of-center grantmaking foundations, including the Open Society Foundations, MacArthur Foundation, Ford Foundation, and Carnegie Corporation of New York.

Explosive Packages a False Flag?

Now the Democrats genuinely get to say “both sides”, with packages containing explosives sent to the Clintons, Eric Holder, George Soros and others conveniently two weeks before a possibly history-changing midterm election. The blame is already being put on those whom Hillary called “deplorables” and a package sent to CNN will be blamed on President Trump for those “CNN sucks” chants at Trump rallies.

Somehow it is all too convenient, this “October surprise”. None of the named targets were really in danger, although others could have been hurt touching, picking up, or opening a package.  The same could not be said when a Bernie Sanders supporter showed up at a baseball field in Alexandria determined to kill Republicans.

Back then we weren’t supposed to link that individual with the rhetoric of Sanders and other Democrats who warned that if the Republican agenda was enacted, millions would die.

As the liberals rise up in righteous condemnation of Trump’s “toxic” rhetoric, we will be asked to forget Rep. Maxine Waters’ call for nonstop harassment of GOP players, of key Republicans being hounded out of restaurants, confronted in elevators and even in their offices and at their homes. We will be asked to forget the violent riots on college campuses to keep conservative speakers from speaking.

A package was delivered to Eric Holder, who recently spoke of the virtues of a well-placed foot in the marketplace of ideas:

“Michelle [Obama] always says ‘When they go low, we go high,'” Holder told the crowd. “No. No. When they go low, we kick them,” Holder said at a campaign event for Georgia Democratic gubernatorial nominee Stacey Abrams in October.

Another package was delivered to the home of Hillary Clinton, whose non-toxic rhetoric included her famous “deplorable” remark, which arguably cost her the 2016 election along with the failure to obtain a Wisconsin highway map:

Addressing the issue of Trump’s popularity, Clinton said: “To just be grossly generalistic, you can put half of Trump supporters into what I call the ‘basket of deplorables.’ Right? Racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamaphobic, you name it…

She continued: “Now some of those folks, they are irredeemable, but they are not America but the other basket… are people who feel that government has let them down, the economy has let them down, nobody cares about them, nobody worries about what happens to their lives and their futures.

Hillary recently provided a timeline for a return to civility, namely when Democrats are in power and control everything:

“I would love to see us return to civility,” Hillary Clinton told CNN’s Christiane Amanpour on Tuesday. Unfortunately, she added, that won’t be possible until the Democrats return to power. “You cannot be civil with a political party that wants to destroy what you stand for, what you care about,” she said. “That’s why I believe, if we are fortunate enough to win back the House and/or the Senate, that’s when civility can start again.”

Of course, rhetoric does not justify a response with explosive violence, yet, as noted, for a so-called domestic terrorist attack, this scattering of suspicious packages seems too lame, too ineffective, too conveniently timed and doesn’t really pass the smell test, at least according to Rush Limbaugh:

Mrs. Clinton, it’s your party, forgive me, that is encouraging this kind of thing. It is the Democrat Party that’s home to all of these mobs. It’s the Democrat Party — Mrs. Clinton herself who said that being uncivil at this point in time is entirely proper and understandable. It’s — the time to go back to civility will be after the Democrats win. You’ve got bought and paid for operatives by Mrs. Clinton money showing up at Trump rallies trying to make them look like deranged Trump supporters. The Democrats are even paying people to draw swastikas on American flags and waving them around, made to look like deranged, lunatic Trump supporters.

And so, in the midst of this atmosphere, we have this series of bombs that were supposedly sent today, exclusively to Democrats. And it just — there’s a smell test that this stuff has to pass, and, so far, a lot of people’s noses are in the air, not quite certain of what to make of this. This is just — it’s not Republicans that show up, for example, at the offices of the Family — what is it, some pro-life group’s offices, some guy shows up with a gun and was going to shoot people, got caught before he was able to shoot anyone, Family Research Center (sic) I think, yeah.

Republicans just don’t do this kind of thing. Even though every event, like mass shootings, remember, every mass shooting there is, the Democrats in the media try to make everybody think right off the bat that some tea partier did it, or some talk radio fan did it, or some Fox News viewer did it. Turns out, it’s never, ever the case. Not one of these bombs went off. And if a Democrat operative’s purpose here is to make it look like, hey, you know, there are mobs everywhere, the mobs are not just Democrat mobs. I mean, look at this, you’ve got people here trying to harm CNN, and Obama, and Hillary and Bill Clinton, and Debbie blabbermouth Schultz. It just — it might serve a purpose here.

Indeed it does. It’s called a “false flag” — doing a terrible thing yourself in a way your opponent will be blamed for.

The Democrat’s genuinely toxic rhetoric had real consequences and if it were not for the fact that Scalise, as a member of the House leadership, was assigned a security detail, perhaps dozens of GOP congressmen would have been slaughtered by a deranged Democrat.

We cannot and should not forget that it was a Bernie Sanders supporter, inspired by what Illinois Republican Congressman Rodney Davis called “political rhetorical terrorism”, that inspired the leftist loon who set out to assassinate Republicans practicing for the charity  game.

Bernie Sanders rightly and correctly disavowed the crimes of a volunteer whose actions he could not envision or control. Yet he and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi have spent the time since President Trump’s reelection yelling fire in the political theater we call democracy, warning endlessly that people will die because of the Trump agenda, painting apocalyptic visions of planetary doom. With them claiming the Republican agenda is dooming the sick, the elderly, and the planet itself, was it so surprising that another liberal infused with the left’s messianic complex, would try to save us all by killing Republicans trying to implement Trump’s America First agenda?

Pelosi especially should remember her own words as reported by the Washington Examiner:

With less than one week until Obamacare enrollment concludes, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi used congressional Democrats’ inaugural weekly address to warn of the catastrophic effects repealing the law would have on the public. Tragically, repeal of the Affordable Care Act will lead to death, disability and suffering.

Imagine that. Quite a call to arms for the assassination of the Congressional leaders who would impose “death, disability, and suffering” on the American people.  Similarly, Bernie Sanders can disavow the shooter, but he can’t disavow his own inflammatory rhetoric. As CNN Politics reports:

Sen. Bernie Sanders did not hold anything back Thursday when he condemned the House passage of the Republican-backed bill to replace Obamacare.

“If the bill passed today in the House became law, thousands of Americans would die, because they would no longer have access to health care,” Sanders told CNN’s Anderson Cooper on “AC360.”

The Arlington shooter no doubt saw this as a call to lock and load. And not to be outdone on the “people will die” list of GOP policies decried by Democrats is Trump’s withdrawal from the Paris Climate Accord. As California Gov. Jerry Brown proclaimed:

Thursday on CNN International, Gov. Jerry Brown (D-CA) reacted to President Donald Trump decision to withdraw from the Paris agreement on climate change by calling it a “crazy decision.”

Brown said, “Well immediate reaction is this is a crazy decision. It is against the facts. It is against science. It is against reality itself. We know we have to decarbonize our future. If we don’t, it is a horror. People will die. Habitat will be destroyed. Seas will rise. Insects will spread in areas they never have before.

Somehow shouting “CNN sucks” at a rally while complaining about documented instances of fake news does not compare to constant claims that people will die if you elect Republicans.

The packages may be found to be a real threat from an obviously unbalanced individual or individuals, but it may very well also be a false flag designed to reaffirm the Democrats’ continuous slander against the GOP.

Breaking: US military to deploy to southern border to confront caravan

NARRATOR: It wasn’t a bluff. Donald Trump had threatened to send the military to close the border when the immigrant “caravan” first formed in Honduras and Guatemala. Earlier this morning, he reiterated his warning:

Sure enough, the order went out — although for the moment, it doesn’t exactly look like a militarization of the border:

Hundreds of U.S. troops are set to make their way to the southern border to help Homeland Security and the National Guard as a caravan with thousands of migrants moves north, a U.S. official confirmed to Fox News on Thursday.

The official said roughly 800 soldiers will be sent to the area to offer “logistical support,” including providing tents and vehicles.

It’s not immediately clear which units are being tasked with the mission as details are still being finalized.

Defense Secretary James Mattis could sign the deployment orders as soon as today.

Eight hundred soldiers? The southern border between the US and Mexico runs for 1,954 miles. That works out to one soldier every 2.5 miles or so, which isn’t exactly an impassable barrier. For comparison, the Punitive Expedition a century ago involved 10,000 troops under General John Pershing to stop the forces of Pancho Villa from raiding American towns. Villa at the time had about 500 men at arms under his command, although Pershing eventually ran up against regular Mexican forces of about 22,000. Pershing managed to put a stop to the raids after almost a year in the field, but he never succeeded in capturing Villa.

The Border Patrol has just under 20,000 agents already, of course, but they’re also stretched across nearly 2,000 miles of border, too. An additional 800 military personnel — added to the 2100 National Guard soldiers already deployed to the border — will certainly help free some of those up from logistical duties to help with enforcement. However, it’s not a game changer, or nearly enough to close the border.

As a demonstration of political will, however, it will suffice, at least in the short run. Trump understands that voters expect action from a chief executive, and thus he’s giving them what they want. Trump wants to show that he takes border control seriously, and to demonstrate that Democrats don’t. A president has lots of opportunities to make that argument, and it helps when Democrats try to ignore the problem altogether.

David Leonhardt argued in the New York Times yesterday that Democrats are leaving that door wide open by failing to address the issues the caravans raise:

For the most part, Democrats have tried to avoid the issue. Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer, the Democratic leaders in Congress, have essentially urged their colleagues to ignore it. “The president is desperate to change the subject from health care to immigration because he knows that health care is the number one issue Americans care about,” they said in a statement over the weekend. “Democrats are focused like a laser on health care and will not be diverted.”

This strikes me as wishful thinking. The caravan is a huge story. It led the NBC Nightly News broadcast yesterday, to take one example. Politicians in the final two weeks of a campaign can’t persuade people to ignore a huge story.

The smarter approach for Democrats would be a few simple statements of the obvious, meant to display both realism and decency, along the lines of: This is a country of laws. We are not going to admit thousands of undocumented immigrants traveling in a caravan. We do not have open borders. But we are and have always been a country of compassion as well, and we are working with Mexican authorities to protect the safety of these men, women and children.

The problem with ignoring the issue is that it plays into the Republicans’ midterm strategy. It makes Democrats sound squishy and insecure on immigration. It makes it sound as if Democrats aren’t really sure whether they believe that this country should have immigration laws.

That’s a gift to Republicans. It offers a reason for some dissatisfied Trump voters from 2016 to forget about their dissatisfaction and vote Republican again this year.

Why don’t Democrats follow Leonhardt’s advice? Maybe it’s because Democrats really have become the party of open borders, and they have every intention of admitting the caravan. That’s certainly been the drift of their policies over the last few years, refusing to limit DACA to current recipients in exchange for normalizing them, and refusing to build a wall that Congress authorized on a bipartisan vote in 2006.

So yes, it’s a gift to Republicans. And Trump is taking advantage of it, but in the least provocative way possible. At this scale, it’s no game-changer.

Arrogant David Hogg Comes Back Out in Public, Instantly Proves Own Ignorance Again

Anti-gun activist David Hogg, who hasn’t been much in the public eye lately, recently came out of the woodwork to embarrass himself once again with more ignorant comments.

Previously on Hogg’s greatest hits, he made extremely embarrassing comments after a screening of left-wing activist Michael Moore’s new movie.

After Hogg suggested that Canadians should break U.S. campaign finance laws, Moore had to snatch the mic from him.

Hogg is at it again with more laughably ignorant comments to scoff at after an interview he did with Chicago’s Windy City Live published on YouTube on Oct. 14.

Mere seconds into the interview, Hogg was already making ridiculous statements.

TRENDING: Reporter Proves Trump 100% Right, Officials ID Overseas Nationals Lurking in Caravan

“We have to develop this courage when our political leaders refuse to have it. When politicians say, ‘Now is not the time to talk about this,’ they were right, the time to talk about this was decades and centuries ago,” Hogg said.

Presumably, Hogg was referring to the reaction of politicians when shootings are fresh.

Is Hogg an embarrassment to the anti-gun crowd?

Out of respect for victims and their families, some politicians try not to politicize tragedies right away and often say it’s not the right time to have discussions relating to gun legislation.

However, after a Texas school shooting in May, Hogg himself didn’t waste even a single day before making noises for gun control laws.

If it were up to Hogg, the decision on guns would have been made “centuries ago.” Note that Hogg didn’t say one century. He meant multiple centuries — apparently referring to the birth of the United States itself.

Possibly, Hogg doesn’t realize that guns actually were discussed “centuries ago.” In fact, fights about gun control are a basic part of American history, as Townhall editor Katie Pavlich pointed out on Twitter.

“It was: July 4, 1776,” Pavlich tweeted.

RELATED: Liberal Campaign Looks To Silence Gun Owners at Voting Booth

The first battles of the American Revolution — Lexington and Concord in 1775 — were fights about gun control, since the British troops were on a mission to confiscate firearms when the colonial militiamen confronted them.

That led to the Declaration of Independence in 1776, and eventually the Constitution of the United States.

It was in 1791, a little over two centuries ago, the first 10 amendments to the Constitution were ratified.

One of those amendments, the Second Amendment, guaranteed Americans the right to bear arms.

Contrary to Hogg’s ignorant comments, the discussion about guns did happen centuries ago — and the side that believed that Americans to have the right to bear arms won.

I hope Hogg never leaves the public eye. It’s hilarious watching his comments backfire after being so arrogant.

Armies Of Lawyers Are Mobilizing To Keep An Eye On Chaos At The Polls

One side is looking for voting fraud.

Washington Fearing massive voter fraud and questionable vote counting, Republicans, Democrats and interest groups are all taking the unusual step of dispatching armies of lawyers in this non-presidential election year to ward off potential trouble at the polls.

“I’ve never seen anything like it for a midterm,” said Hilary Shelton, director of the NAACP’s Washington bureau. “It does look much more consistent with issues that we address in (presidential) elections. For a midterm election, it’s extraordinary. But this is an extraordinary time.”

Attorneys and poll watchers will be at voting sites and manning war rooms in nearly every state, looking at almost every aspect of the voting process and prepared act if they see something that they feel could hurt their candidate or cause.

The federal government also plans to be watching, as the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division will send lawyers to several states. For the 2016 election, the department dispatched more than 500 employees to 67 jurisdictions in 28 states. The department has not detailed specific plans for this year.

Massive displays of legal force are common in presidential election years, but the large presence of attorneys in this year’s midterm election effort is unprecedented, several experts said.

The legal maneuvering is already underway. Voting rights and civil rights groups have filed lawsuits in the past week charging Georgia authorities with rejecting a disproportionate number of absentee ballots and with discrimination in verifying new voter registrations.

A second dispute centers on nearly 53,000 voter registrations that have been placed on a pending list because they do not satisfy an “exact match” requirement with a person’s Georgia driver license or Social Security card. The state’s Republican-controlled general assembly last year approved the exact match requirement.

Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp, a Republican who is running against Democrat Stacey Abrams for governor, has defended his stewardship of the election. He says the voting issue is a manufactured crisis created by Abrams.

National Democratic and Republican Party officials declined to comment on their Election Day legal strategies other than to say they will be ready for whatever happens.

But some numbers show the emphasis that the parties and outside groups are putting on potential legal action this election cycle.

The NAACP, the Brennan Center of Justice at New York University School of Law, and Common Cause are partnering with the liberal-leaning Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, which says it has 4,000 attorneys who have volunteered to work the elections.

Some of those lawyers will man a nationwide voter hotline and local call centers on Election Day in key states like Florida, Georgia and Texas, said Marcia Johnson-Blanco, co-director of the committee’s Voting Rights Project.

Migrant Caravan Marching To U.S. Borders Swells To 14,000 As Trump Readies Federal Response

The migrant caravan marching through Mexico to the U.S. border has grown to more than 14,000, one Mexican news outlet reports, and President Trump is readying a federal response if needed.

Although the group of migrants that set off from Honduras two weeks ago numbered about 2,000, the number has been growing in the last weeks, topping 14,000 now, El Universal reported.

The news outlet said that the new estimate of marchers comes from “municipal authorities,” the Catholic Diocese in the Mexican city of Tapachula, and the Mexican National Migration Institute.

“The first group walked for 37 kilometers from Ciudad Hidalgo to Tapachula on Sunday afternoon and was comprised by 5,333 children, women and men,” El Universal reported. Then 3,000 more men, women and children started “to walk under the rain.”

“Meanwhile, there are 3,000 children, women and men in the Ciudad Hidalgo International bridge, shared by Mexico and Guatemala, who are looking to enter Mexico with documents provided by the INM,” the news outlet said.

The caravan is still more than 1,000 miles away but there are reports that it is receiving aid and transportation from unknown sources.

Trump has warned that there will be consequences.

“Sadly, it looks like Mexico’s Police and Military are unable to stop the Caravan heading to the Southern Border of the United States. Criminals and unknown Middle Easterners are mixed in. I have alerted Border Patrol and Military that this is a National Emergy. Must change laws!” he wrote on Twitter.

And on Wednesday, he tweeted: “We are a great Sovereign Nation. We have Strong Borders and will never accept people coming into our Country illegally!”

Bloomberg: Democrats should tell the caravan to turn back

Bloomberg News’ Editorial Board has published a piece arguing that Democrats need to stop avoiding discussion of the migrant caravan and start reassuring voters they side with Trump on the need for a secure border. Bloomberg suggests the best thing Democrats could do right now is to tell the migrants to turn back:

In response to the march, President Donald Trump has tweeted his intention to deploy the U.S. military to “close our Southern border.” He’s also threatened to halt U.S. aid to the governments concerned as punishment for failing to block the caravan.

And in response to the president? Well, Democrats have been ominously silent. This is a mistake — and an abdication of responsibility. Democrats, who are trying to make the case for their ascension in the midterm elections, need to make clear that they agree with Trump on the need for a secure border and that they are prepared to work with him to ensure that it remains so.

The first step ought to be straightforward. Democrats should call on the marchers to turn back, far and away the best solution. In this, they ought not to shrink from saying they agree with the president…

Democrats are right to demand compassion for the migrants. But they will be failing the test of leadership if they seem to say the border doesn’t matter or if they cede the governing to Trump. The caravan is coming, and they’ve given no sign that they know what to do.

Also today, the Chicago Tribune’s John Kass notes that Democrats’ response to the caravan has been a “dumb, shocked silence.” He goes on to say that in this case their silence should be taken as consent.

Depending on your politics, you’ve probably already called it something. Or, you may have followed the example of Democratic leaders Nancy Pelosi or Chuck Schumer, who’ve found a nice pile of warm sand and stuck their heads in there.

Wasn’t it just months ago that leading Democratic presidential contenders were demanding to abolish the federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency that deports people here illegally?

Those were the days when the hard left that now controls the Democratic Party made it clear that border enforcement, by its nature, was racist and lacked compassion.

And their allies in the Democratic Media Complex waxed on endlessly about families being separated at the borders, even though they were separated by law after they insisted on crossing the border illegally.

But now, it’s crickets from the Democrats, a dumb, shocked silence.

I wrote about this topic yesterday based on two different opinion pieces, both of which argued Democrats were making a mistake by refusing to find some middle ground on this issue rather than rushing to say the opposite of whatever Trump is saying. But I think Kass is correct in his diagnosis of the reason for the left’s silence. First, they can’t believe this is happening in the midst of their blue wave. For example, here’s how Vox’s story about the caravan opens:

If the migrant caravan didn’t exist, President Donald Trump might have needed to invent it.

The existence of a massive group of Central Americans pushing toward the US without papers — even if they are still hundreds of miles away — seems like something Trump’s GOP might create in a lab to unleash on the eve of the midterms.

But the caravan is real.

Secondly, beyond being stunned, I think Kass is right that the silence from the left is also prompted by the fact that the left doesn’t really believe in the middle-ground position. That may be partly because Trump owns the issue making even a modestly positive comment about the border verboten for Democrats. The left-wing base would not tolerate it because it would sound Trumpian.

But I suspect Trump has actually moved more than a few Democrats leftward on this issue, to the point that they aren’t quite sure borders themselves are a good idea. Some Democrats are probably quietly cheering on the caravan, but they are smart enough to realize that a lot of their constituents aren’t ready for that. It puts them in a tough spot. If you can’t say what you believe and you can’t say what the other guy believes, the only option that remains is silence. And that’s where Democrats are right now, silently consenting because it’s a smarter play than vocally consenting.

Sure, I know the official explanation here is that Democrats have made a strategic decision not to get pulled into Trump’s game. They claim this is about staying focused on winning issues like health care. But that only reinforces the point that this is not a winning issue for the left. They can’t find middle-ground because they don’t believe in it or because they know their constituents don’t.
