VP Mike Pence Honors Flight 93 Heroes Who Saved Lives on 9/11, Possibly His Own

Vice President Mike Pence spoke with particular emotion in his voice at times as he recounted the events of September 11, 2001 from the Flight 93 memorial in Shanksville, Pennsylvania on Monday. Pence honored the families of the fallen passenger “heroes” who took action to overtake the terrorist hijackers of their plane that day.

After addressing those present, including families of those who died on Flight 93, Pence began:

President Trump asked me to be here, to pay a debt of honor to the 40 heroes of Flight 93, to all the fallen, and their families, and to the generation of heroes they inspired and to tell you that his heart is here in Pennsylvania, especially with all you who lost loved ones 16 years ago.

He spoke of the President’s observance of this day at the Pentagon, where Trump gave tribute to the 184 men and women who died there in the attacks. Pence added that their hearts were also with the 2,753 men and women who lost their lives in the attacks on New York’s World Trade Center.

“We grieve with every family of the innocent souls who were murdered by terrorists that day.

The Vice President recalled where he was on September 11, 2001, as he said every American who lived through it does. Pence was a new member of the U.S. House of Representatives at the time and was in the Capitol Building when he heard about attacks in New York and the Pentagon. He recalled being ushered across the street to the top floor of the headquarters of the Capitol Police Chief and images of a building being evacuated, “hemorrhaging with people running in every direction.”

Pence said that the police chief relayed from a phone call to leaders of the House and Senate gathered at the headquarters that day, that there was an inbound plane just 12 minutes away from them. That room then fell silent.

“They were ordinary people, but on that day, they became extraordinary,” Pence said of the Flight 93 passengers.

Flight 93 had taken off that morning at 8:42 a.m. from Newark and was scheduled to be en route to San Francisco. Just 46 minutes into the flight terrorists took over the plane, the Vice President recounted. At 9:35 a.m. the plane diverted toward Washington, D.C.

Pence continued:

…the passengers called their loved only to find out what was happening across the country.  They learned what the rest of America knew: The World Trade Center had been struck, the Pentagon had been hit only a few moments after they were hijacked. They figured out that the terrorists intended to use their plane for the same purpose.

But as Tom Burnett told his wife, on the phone, “We’re going to do something.”  And they did.

Vice President Pence recounted the quick response of those aboard who devised a plan, gave the Lord’s Prayer, and carried out their objective. He said they said that prayer along with phone operator on the ground Lisa Jefferson, Pence reciting some of those words “though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for Thou art with me.”

He then repeated the words of passenger Todd Beamer, “Let’s roll.” At 9:57 a.m. those words came just before the heroic passengers’ plan went into motion. “They charged the cockpit. They took hold of their fate, and six minutes later, at 10:03 a.m., Flight 93 plummeted here to the Earth. The brave men and women aboard sacrificed their lives for the country we call home,” said Pence.

Pence spoke of the Tower of Voices that is planned for the Flight 93 crash site. The memorial will feature 40 chimes that each sound its own note, which Pence said will “symbolize the voices of the 40 men and women we remember today. The notes when played together, I’m told, will form a perfect harmony — just as, in their final moments, the men and women of Flight 93 worked together to defend freedom.”

“We honor them by remembering them. And we honor them by ensuring that we do all in our power as a nation to prevent such evil from ever reaching our shores again,” Pence said to applause from the crowd gathered. “As the President has reminded us, we are in the midst of a war between good and evil.”

He continued:

When the plane went down, the heroes aboard it were the first of a new generation of Americans to rise up, as citizen soldiers, in what would come to be known as the Global War on Terror.

It is remarkable to think that, in the wake of their service and sacrifice, America itself experienced a rebirth — a rebirth of unity, of purpose, and a rededication to our most sacred ideal of freedom.

And every day, for 16 years, their actions have inspired many more of our fellow citizens to stand up, step forward, and follow in their heroic service.

The Vice President acknowledged first responders, firefighters, and police officers as well as the “more than five million Americans have stepped forward to serve in the Armed Forces of the United States of America since September 11th.” He added that “nearly 7,000 Americans who have given their lives on the field of battle since that day 16 years ago, today.”

Pence then turned focus on “the threat” that remains and the “menace of global terrorism” which “brings violence across the wider world to places like London and Paris and Barcelona.” He spoke of ISIS in Iraq and Syria plotting against America and her allies.

The Vice President did not specifically mention that the perpetrators were Islamic terrorists, but he said that “the perpetrators of 9/11 organized and orchestrated their attacks from a safe haven of Afghanistan” as he referenced Trump’s recent speech on U.S. presence in that country. He quoted Trump’s words committing the U.S. to “destroy terrorist organizations and the radical ideology that drives them.”

He continued, “America will remain engaged in Afghanistan until we eliminate the terrorist threat to our homeland and our people once and for all.”

Pence stated that it wasn’t the first time he had visited the Flight 93 field. He spoke of visiting with his family when it was a field no more than a plywood wall and a cross in the field, a makeshift memorial. He personalized the events, as he sees the heroic actions of the Flight 93 passengers to thwart the terrorists’ plans as an action that likely saved his own life that day.

“When heroes fall, the nation mourns, for ‘no greater love has a man than this, that he should lay down his life for his friends,’” said Vice President Pence. “As long as America endures, we will tell their story, and generations of Americans will ever be inspired by the faithful and courageous words and deeds of the heroes of Flight 93.”

Judge Orders Investigation Into Lawyers Who Helped Hillary Clinton Delete Private Emails

On Monday, the Maryland state bar was ordered by County Circuit Court Judge Paul F. Harris Jr. to investigate the lawyers who assisted Hillary Clinton with deleting her private emails.

Washington Times reports:

Anne Arundel County Circuit Court Judge Paul F. Harris Jr. said the complaints lodged against David E. KendallCheryl Mills and Heather Samuelson were egregious and the state bar couldn’t dismiss them as frivolous.

“There are allegations of destroying evidence,” Judge Harris said at a hearing Monday morning.

He said the state’s rules require the bar to conduct investigations no matter who raises the complaint and can’t brush aside accusations.

The judge made the announcement a day before Mrs. Clinton releases her latest book, “What Happened,” and begins a monthslong book tour attempting to explain how she lost an election she thought she had secured.

The Maryland bar complaint was brought by Ty Clevenger, a lawyer who has pursued sanctions against Mrs. Clinton and her legal team in several venues and who is also pressing the FBI to release details of its investigation into the former top diplomat.

If Judge James E. Boasberg has his way, details of Hillary Clinton’s email investigation by the FBI will see the light of day. The U.S. District Judge isn’t buying the FBI’s claim that a “lack of public interest” justifies withholding the documents.

Washington Times reports:

A federal judge ordered the FBI on Thursday to disclose more details about how it handled its investigation into Hillary Clinton’s secret email account.

U.S. District Judge James E. Boasberg said court papers describing the grand jury subpoenas the FBI obtained to compel information from Mrs. Clinton’s internet service providers can be made public.

In doing so, he overruled objections by the Trump administration that had insisted making the information public would violate grand jury secrecy rules.

“After reviewing the document in camera, the court concludes that it largely rehashes information already made public, thus obviating any need for secrecy,” the judge said.

Two groups, Judicial Watch and Cause of Action Institute, have been prodding the government for more information about the Clinton emails, and they cheered the judge’s ruling as a victory for transparency.

President of Judicial Watch, Tom Fitton released a statement regarding this ruling:

We’re happy with the ruling but it is unbelievable we’re being opposed by Trump appointees in the State and Justice Department’s on the Clinton email issue.  President Trump ought to be outraged his appointees are protecting Hillary Clinton. The State Department should initiate action with the Justice Department – and both agencies should finally take the necessary steps to recover all the government emails Hillary Clinton unlawfully removed.

As the TGP reported, the FBI has denied lawyer Ty Clevenger’s request to obtain documents related to Hillary Clinton’s email probe. The reason given? A “lack of public interest.”

According to the Washington Times:

Hillary Clinton’s case isn’t interesting enough to the public to justify releasing the FBI’s files on her, the bureau said this week in rejecting an open-records request by a lawyer seeking to have the former secretary of state punished for perjury.

Ty Clevenger, the lawyer, has been trying to get Mrs. Clinton and her personal lawyers disbarred for their handling of her official emails during her time as secretary of state. He’s met with resistance among lawyers, and now his request for information from the FBI’s files has been shot down.

“You have not sufficiently demonstrated that the public’s interest in disclosure outweighs personal privacy interests of the subject,” FBI records management section chief David M. Hardy told Mr. Clevenger in a letter Monday.

GOA: Speaker Ryan’s Inaction on Reciprocity Gives ‘Dirtbags’ the Upper Hand

GOA: Speaker Ryan’s Inaction on Reciprocity Gives ‘Dirtbags’ the Upper Hand

11 Sep, 2017
11 Sep, 2017

During a Monday morning conversation with Breitbart News, Gun Owners of America’s Larry Pratt said Speaker Paul Ryan’s (R-WI) inaction on concealed carry reciprocity gives “dirtbags” the upper hand.

Pratt specifically referenced the June 14, 2017, Alexandria, Virginia, attack where Congressmen and their staffers had to travel without guns in and out of the District of Columbia in order to comply with gun control laws. As a result, they were unarmed when the attacker opened fire on a Congressional baseball practice.

Pratt said, “DC gun laws led directly to facilitating that dirtbag’s attack.” He added:

I would say Ryan deserves a lion’s share of the blame. Senate Majority Leader McConnell (R-KY) too. Because Rep. Richard Hudson’s (R-NC) bill, would have legally made it almost inconceivable for the dirtbag to have struck at that practice because a bunch of conservative members and staffers probably–if they had not been legally precluded–you can figure ten, 15, or 20 percent of them would have been packing. And the first bullet that flew from the dirtbag would have been met by return fire. That may not have made a difference for Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA), because I think he was dreadfully wounded with the first round, but it certainly would have kept some of the others from being wounded.

Pratt’s observation echoes words spoken by Rep. Barry Loudermilk (R-GA) after the attack. Loudermilk made clear that his staffer would have had a gun in the car at Congressional baseball practice were it not for the silly patchwork of concealed carry reciprocity laws in this country. The Hill quoted Loudermilk, saying:

Until you are shot at, you don’t know what the feeling is to be that vulnerable. Someone actively shooting at you; targeting you. Trying to shoot you and you have no way of defending yourself. In Georgia we have a concealed carry law that allows individual citizens to keep a weapon with them and in their car. Had my staff member who was (at Congressional baseball practice) been in Georgia he would have normally carried a weapon in his car.

It must be noted that the Alexandria attacker acquired his firearms legally. The ATF confirmed that the attacker—who was from Illinois—purchased his firearms at gun stores where a background check is conducted by a Federal Firearms License holder.  And Breitbart News reported the New York Times‘ admission that strict Illinois gun control failed to keep the attacker from acquiring guns.

In the end, gun control does not keep guns out of the hands of evil people, but it does keep them out of the hands of law-abiding Americans—including Congressmen—when guns are most needed for self-defense. Reciprocity legislation introduced in the House on January 3, 2017, could correct these issues but Ryan has shown no interest in pushing it through.

On September 7, 2017, Breitbart News reported that Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY)—sponsor of a DC reciprocity measure—told Armed American Radio that reciprocity was not moving because “the Speaker … didn’t think the timing was right.”

How many times must gun control fail before Ryan and the rest of the ruling class realize the time has never been more right? A change in reciprocity would give law-abiding citizens the upper hand for a change.

Watch: NFL Legend Mike Ditka Has Message for Kaepernick on 9/11 Anniversary

Advertisement – story continues below

Legendary Chicago Bears football coach Mike Ditka had a message for national anthem protesters like Colin Kaepernick on this day of remembrance for the United States.

In an interview with TMZ, Ditka agreed that it was disrespectful for players to not stand for the anthem on the anniversary of 9/11, when so many citizens and first responders lost their lives.

“People have a right to do what they want to do as long as they don’t break they law or hurt people,” he continued, adding that there would always be “malcontents.”

Advertisement – story continues below

When asked if the protesters should put it on hold on 9/11, Ditka said, “I’d like to see them put on hold every day. I mean there’s a time and place for everything. Before a football game is not the time and place for it. Period!”

When asked what his message would be for those who were planning on protesting “The Star-Spangled Banner” on Monday, the former coach said, “God bless America.”

Take a look:

It doesn’t get much more blunt than that.

Ditka has been vocal about what he thinks about Kaepernick and others who chose to dispresect the flag. Last September the retired coach said had no respect for the former San Francisco 49er. He also said that any player who would do such a thing wouldn’t play on his team.

The outspoken conservative has also been vocal about his support for President Donald Trump and his disapproval for former President Barack Obama. When asked about what he thought about Trump winning the presidency earlier this year, he said he would be surprised if Trump could mess up the country as much as Obama had done in the past eight years.

It is nice to know that Ditka is still telling it like it is.

What’s this? Now Canada is deporting illegal aliens in growing numbers

For some time now we’ve been covering the curious trend of illegal immigrants fleeing the United States (or more specifically, President Trump) and going to Canada. Many of them pass through a very unofficial point of entry in Upstate New York. Up until now, Canada has tried to paint a brave face on this situation, talking about how everyone is welcome and even setting up entry facilities for them. (Here’s how you can help get them some heated trailers to see them on their way.) Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has been one of their biggest cheerleaders.

But it seems that even Canada is learning that governing his hard, particularly when it comes to questions of immigration. And the Great White North hasn’t been quite as welcoming as they’ve claimed in public. Turns out that the Canadians have been deporting their own fair share of these illegals in growing numbers, and some of them are being sent back to countries deemed to dangerous for even the United States to send them home. (Reuters)

Canada has deported hundreds of people to countries designated too dangerous for civilians, with more than half of those people being sent back to Iraq, according to government data obtained by Reuters.

The spike in deportations comes as Canada faces a record number of migrants and is on track to have the most refugee claims in more than a decade. That has left the country scrambling to cope with the influx of asylum seekers, many crossing the U.S. border illegally.

Between January 2014 and Sept. 6, 2017, Canada sent 249 people to 11 countries for which the government had suspended or deferred deportations because of dangers to civilians.

The numbers are still tiny compared to the United States, but then Canada is a vastly smaller nation by population. So they sent more than 130 people back to Iraq, 43 to Afghanistan and 62 to the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Those are some dangerous locations. But to be fair to the Canadians, the ones they are deporting are known to have criminal records and are on our continent for precisely the wrong reasons. Reality seems to have set in north of the border and at least in some cases they’re just doing what they have to do. (I only hope that the word doesn’t get out so our illegals stop self-deporting.)

Those aren’t the only countries supplying all of these illegal aliens. US News reports that more than three quarters of them are actually coming from Haiti.

More than 80 percent of the migrants arriving into Quebec are Haitians, according to the RCMP. The influx has put a strain on Canada’s immigration and refugee services, particularly in the city of Montreal, where the vast majority of Canada’s Haitians live.

Canadian authorities have had to adopt temporary measures to accommodate the surge of irregular border crossings in recent weeks. Asylum seekers are being housed in the Olympic Stadium in Montreal and a 500-person tent village in Saint-Bernard-de-Lacolle – adjacent to the U.S. border town of Champlain, New York – while they wait for some shelters to become less crowded and others to open.

So what’s Justin Trudeau’s next move? Will he announce that he’s going to build a great wall on the southern border… of Canada? Or will he be coming to Donald Trump to ask for some help with his illegal immigrant problem? That would be rich, though I could actually see Trump offering to help even if he put out a few sarcastic tweets to go along with the aid.

Bannon: I’ve Fought for Racial Unity All My Life; Don’t Need Lectures from ‘Limousine Liberals’

Former White House Chief Strategist Steve Bannon does not need lectures on race relations from “limousine liberals” and the media elites who hang out in largely homogenous crowds and whose oh-so-progressive-and-forward-looking organizations and outlets do not have the effortless diversity of Breitbart News’ masthead.

In a 60 Minutes interview, Bannon told CBS anchor Charlie Rose that he was raised in a desegregated neighborhood on the North Side of Richmond, Virginia, that is “predominantly black.”

“I went to an integrated school, a Catholic school. I served in the military,” he continued. “I don’t need to be lectured … by a bunch of limousine liberals, okay, from the Upper East Side of New York and from the Hamptons … about any of this. My lived experience is that.”

Bannon also suggested that left-wing activists and the legacy media may be trying to play the race card because they know how successful and unifying the economic nationalist agenda, which Bannon said will unify Americans of all races, nationalities, religious, and sexual orientations—can be. Bannon has consistently denounced ethno-nationalists and white supremacists. He did so again to Rose.

“[T]he Neo-Nazis and Neo-Confederates and the Klan, who, by the way, are absolutely awful – there’s no room in American politics for that,” Bannon said. “There’s no room in American society for that.”

And he told Rose that the legacy media give a platform to irrelevant white supremacists who stage rallies because the media want to “make them up as some huge part of Donald Trump’s coalition” when they are not.

In the end, Bannon said he is singularly focused on the economic nationalist message that will help and unite Americans–U.S.-born Americans and legal immigrants–of all backgrounds.

“I don’t need the affirmation of the mainstream media,” Bannon said. “I don’t care what they say. They can call me an anti-Semite. They can call me racist. They call me nativist. You can call me anything you want. Okay? As long as we’re driving this agenda for the working men and women of this country, I’m happy.”

Photo of Trump Cabinet Before Irma Hit Shows There’s Still Hope for America

Advertisement – story continues below

President Trump and his team have already dealt with one devastating hurricane, and are now in the middle of overseeing the response to a second.

As Trump met with his cabinet and Vice President Mike Pence on Saturday to review the recovery plans for Hurricane Irma, a photographer caught a moment that should speak volumes about this administration and the country.

Before the important meeting started, the president and everyone in the room bowed their heads in prayer to ask for wisdom before making key decisions.

Advertisement – story continues below

The snapshot was shared by Fox News on Facebook, and had received over 20,000 “likes” as of Monday.

After the moment of prayer was finished, Trump led the team through a review of the situation. “This is a storm of enormous destructive power, and I ask everyone in the storm’s path to heed ALL instructions from government officials,” the president posted on Twitter, along with a video of the cabinet meeting.

Advertisement – story continues below

Simply bowing heads in prayer may not seem like a major moment, but it signifies something that has been sorely missing from the Oval Office over the eight years of Barack Obama’s presidency: Humility.

While players in the Obama administration acted as if they were always the smartest people ever to roam the earth, Trump has done an impressive job of selecting advisers who are talented but also humble. From Mike Pence to Ben Carson, the Trump cabinet is one that isn’t afraid to seek God’s guidance in times of crisis.

The restoration of faith’s role in the presidency shows that there’s still hope for America’s future. Even for people who aren’t particularly religious, taking the time to ask for higher wisdom is a sign that the team takes its leadership roles seriously.

Instead of acting as if the almighty state is the be all and end all, the Trump cabinet acknowledges that there is a higher power.

Any government run by humans is fallible — but if this photo is any indication, the president’s team is doing everything possible to seek divine help in making wise decisions when it comes to doing what is best for America.

Vanity Fair Snubbed Melania Trump From 2017 Best-Dressed List. I’m Literally Shaking.

Vanity Fair released its annual best-dressed list on Wednesday morning. It is an absolute joke.

The most glaring omission is First Lady Melania Trump, who shocked the world earlier this summer on a nine day trip with a series of stunning outfits that each won wide praise:

"Melania Trump’s Fashion Gets Rave Reviews During Trip Overseas," Harper’s Bazaar

"Melania Trump is the epitome of style (and independence) during this trip abroad," Philadelphia Enquirer

"First lady Melania Trump wears fashion-forward style abroad," NBC’s Today Show

"Melania and Ivanka Stun on Presidential Trip to Poland," AOL

"Melania Trump continues fashion tour de force at Eiffel Tower dinner," USA Today

In case you were living under a rock during Melania’s "fashion tour de force" and are unsure whether the praise was deserved, here’s a small sampling of what we saw.

This was Melania at Israel’s Western Wall, sporting an elegant Michael Kors suit that she paired with head-turning Manolo Blahnik stillettos:

HEIDI LEVINE / AFP / Getty Images

Here she is in Hamburg, Germany, where she was described as "demure and chic" for her leaf print Jil Sander dress paired with a Bottega Veneta coat:

AXEL SCHMIDT / AFP / Getty Images

It was in Saudi Arabia where Melania won the most praise for a series of outfits that showed off the versatility of the fashion icon. Her looks were stunning from the moment she departed in a Max Mara sweater and Hervé Pierre leather skirt, a look described by Vogue as a "fashion-forward ensemble."

And by the time she stepped off the plane in Riyadh she had transformed her look with a Stella McCartney jumpsuit, a Melania staple, boldly accessorized with an oversized gold Saint Laurent python belt.

MANDEL NGAN / AFP / Getty Images

She also showcased her ability to go casual in Saudi Arabia with a Ralph Lauren safari shirt-dress, to which she gave her signature edge by pairing with striped Mahnolo Blahniks.

I could go on like this forever given Melania’s keen fashion sense, which, by the way, runs in the family. Both Ivanka Trump and Barron Trump have won headlines for their ability to drive trends in the fashion industry.

Melania’s many looks are regularly showcased on the @FLOTUS Instagram page, which has emerged as a must-follow for fashionistas on social media.

There is nobody on Vanity Fair’s best-dressed list more deserving of the honor than the First Lady, but there are a few that are a true embarrassment.

Among them is three-time honoree Barack Obama, who dresses like a nerd.

Also included on the list is Jaden Smith, the son of a Scientologist donor to Barack Obama, who is also bad at getting dressed.

Not all of the Vanity Fair honorees are unworthy. Among those who belong in the same conversation as Melania is Queen Letizia of Spain, who has been deemed the "reigning champion of modern regal style."

I understand that Vanity Fair prefers to spotlight failures of President Donald Trump, but the failure to recognize the First Lady’s fashion prowess in 2017 is an offense from which the magazine may never recover.

Also notably snubbed was American hero Kate Upton, who has outfitted herself flawlessly throughout the year.

SHOCK: Trump Administration Did NOT Mention This During 9/11 Ceremony

Sixteen years after the worst terrorist attack in history hit the United States, President Donald Trump and his administration failed to mention the terms “radical Islam” or “Islamic terrorism” during a ceremony in Washington D.C.

In fact, not only did President Trump fail to use those words, but neither did Vice President Mike Pence, Defense Secretary James Mattis, Acting Homeland Security Secretary Elaine Duke, nor Attorney General Jess Sessions.

Speaking at the Pentagon, President Trump danced around using the terms. Instead he referred to the Islamic terrorists as “horrible, horrible enemies,” “barbaric forces of evil and destruction,” “terrorists who attacked us,” and “enemies of all civilized people.”

President Trump’s decision to eschew mentioning the role that Islam played in 9/11 is especially shocking when considering some of his prior tweets on Islam:

Mattis also downplayed the role that Islam played in 9/11 by referring to the Islamic terrorists as “maniacs disguised in false religious garb.”

Sessions came very close to calling out Islamic terrorism by referring to them as “extremists,” but did not refer to any specific ideology or religion. “For these extremists, it’s more than religion; it’s ideology,” he said. “We have no choice but to defend against it.”

Pence did mention ISIS while speaking at a memorial in Pennsylvania for flight 93 but failed to use the words “radical Islam” or “Islamic terrorism” when speaking of the 9/11 attacks.

Acting Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Elaine Duke issued a statement in remembrance of 9/11 which also failed to use the terms.

One possible explanation for the Trump administration failing to mention Islam on 9/11 is the influence that national security adviser H.R. McMaster has over the administration.

Earlier this year, CNN reported that McMaster said in a National Security Council meeting that using the term “radical Islamic terrorism,” is not helpful in defeating terrorist groups – a nearly identical belief to the position held by the Obama administration.

WATCH: Mattis Delivers STRONG Message On 9/11 Anniversary

Defense Secretary James Mattis issued a stirring speech on 9/11, making it clear to the Islamic terrorists who were behind the 9/11 attacks that America would finish the fight that al-Qaeda terrorists had started.

Once Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman General Joseph Dunford Jr. finished speaking, Mattis began his speech by honoring those that perished during the 9/11 terror attacks and the heroism displayed by many Americans.

“Heroism and passion were boundless on 9/11,” Mattis said. “Patriots from all backgrounds and all walks of life responded with speed, with courage, and with compassion. In the aftermath of the attack, our service members, our nation, rallied together as one.”

Mattis then issued a stern warning to the Islamic terrorists.

“While we never asked for this fight, we are steadfastly committed to seeing it through, as President Trump has made it abundantly clear,” Mattis said.

The defense secretary then mocked the Islamic terrorists as “maniacs disguised in false religious garb,” saying they were wrong to think they could frighten Americans into submission.

“We Americans are not made of common candy,” said Mattis. “We are not seaweed drifting in the current. We are not intimidated by our enemies, and Mr. President, your military does not scare.”

Mattis compared today’s armed forces to those that served in Valley Forge, Midway and Iwojima.

“Your military stands and ready confident to defend this country, this experiment in democracy,” said Mattis.

He then gave a message to the families of those who lost their lives in the 9/11 terror attacks.

“The loss you have endured drives us in our mission today and everyday,” Mattis concluded, before giving way to President Trump’s speech.
