Pete Buttigieg struggles to explain what “intergenerational justice” is

As you may have already heard, Pete Buttigieg is running for the Democratic nomination to be president in 2020. (And if you haven’t, you are to be forgiven since he’s still polling at less than one percent.) Speaking strictly as a writer, I’m rooting against him because I can neither pronounce his name or spell it correctly without the copy/paste function. But the man has thrown his hat in the ring and is out there giving interviews so I suppose we owe him a bit of coverage now and again.

When the Mayor of South Bend, Indiana announced his bid, he did an interview with the Atlantic where he talked about how he spends a lot of time thinking about “intergenerational justice.” You might be wondering what that is. For the record, so was I. And this week, NBC News digs a bit deeper into the question. Just what is this guy talking about?

As the youngest candidate in the race so far, Buttigieg, 37, defines the concept as more of a governing principle, rather than a set of policy prescriptions.

“To me, it’s ensuring that choices made today are responsible and fair — that the distribution of the consequences is viewed not just in terms of how we distribute benefits and costs among people today, but also between people today and people tomorrow,” he told NBC News in a recent phone interview.

What intergenerational justice is not, he said, is a conflict among various age groups, noting that he isn’t suggesting he can build a movement out of one particular voting bloc.

The Mayor’s answers are about as vague as one could imagine, but he didn’t cook this idea up on his own. It turns out that the concept of intergenerational justice has been knocking around various schools for a long time, including debates among philosophy majors at Stanford dating back decades.

Applying the concept to politics is another matter entirely. Buttigieg sort of stumbles around the question, speaking in general terms about the short-term picture versus the long-term and balancing the costs and benefits to the current generation against the downstream effects on future generations. In the most basic terms, he appears to be saying any actions we take today can and probably will have effects on our children and their children and so on.

Well… sure. But isn’t that already a given? While the candidate seems more inclined to apply this theory to climate change and race relations (he is a Democrat, after all), it would be more interesting to hear him apply it to the national debt. There’s a real generational problem in search of a solution. But this mostly sounds like some sort of liberal marketing scheme to give the cool kids something else to print on their protest signs. Saying “intergenerational” makes it sound like intersectionality, which is all the rage these days. In case you’re not familiar, intersectionality is basically the principle that if anything is racist, homophobic or otherwise bigoted, then everything is all of those things. (I never promised it was going to make sense.)

Tacking the word “justice” on the end is just a bonus in liberal circles. (No justice… no peace!) Unfortunately, justice is supposed to be a universal constant in America, owed equally to each citizen regardless of demographic pigeonholes. When you start calling for more justice for particular groups than others, we’re immediately back to the idea that some animals are more equal than others.

Even after all of this examination, I’m still not entirely sure what Pete Buttigieg is trying to say here. For that matter, I’m not sure that Pete Buttigieg is sure what he’s trying to say. When asked, he’s quick to point out that this is more of a philosophy than some sort of specific set of policies. And he definitely doesn’t want to start a class war between generations… heaven forbid. So how do you build a party platform out of that? Good question.

Ocasio-Cortez’s failed company is a tax deadbeat: warrant filed over unpaid taxes to New York State

Despite being the object of a huge amount of media attention, few people seem to know that Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez tried to be an entrepreneur and fell flat on her face. Her media pals certainly have no interest in publicizing the fact the she embraced socialism after she proved to be utterly, embarrassingly  incompetent at  earning her way.  Monica Showalter asked the key question ion these pages last summer: “Did Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s socialist fanaticism come from bitter failure in business?
Now, thanks to digging by the New York Post, we know that:

Brook Avenue Press, a company she founded in 2012 to publish children’s books in The Bronx, owes the state $1,870.36 in corporate taxes, public records show.

The state slapped the company with a warrant on July 6, 2017, two months after Ocasio-Cortez announced her candidacy to run against Democratic incumbent Joe Crowley for the district that encompasses parts of Queens and The Bronx.

The backstory on Brook Avenue Press:

She founded a publishing business at age 22, straight out of Boston University, called Brook Avenue Press, to promote the Bronx as a nice place in children’s books, something that has already been amply done by Sesame Street which came up with the concept in the 1960s. She didn’t found it out of nowhere, either, she was part of a hipster collective…where startups with supposedly great ideas and youthful owners, get together in one building financed by the state…and learn from each other as their businesses presumably grow. Hers was called the Sunshine Bronx Business Incubator.

The Post covered the debut of the “hipster collective” in 2010:

Mayor Michael Bloomberg, along with city officials and business leaders, broke ground on the first city-sponsored business incubator in the Bronx. The facility will open in the former BankNote Building early next year and is aimed at helping small businesses and start-ups grow throughout the borough. It will be called the Sunshine Bronx Business Incubator.

“We want to help businesses get started and incubators are facilitating growth in under served areas of the city,” he said. “We’re helping the doers to become the next break-out success stories.”

The space will accommodate 400 entrepreneurs from the borough over the next three years. The building on Garrison Avenue will be ready to have its first tenants move in by February 2011.

Ocasio-Cortez produced this embarrassing promotional video about her venture in 2011, revealing not only grandiose plans that never got close to becoming real, but also showing that since then, she has had an astonishing makeover from nerd to socialist glamour-puss:

At the time I wrote about it, this video had received only a few hundred views, which is astonishing, considering how prominent she already was. Even today, it has only 13,377 views as of this writing.  Her fanboys and fangirls remain blissfully ignorant. But equally astonishing is the difference between then and now in terms of her appearance. I asked last summer: “Who was behind Alexandria Ocasio Cortez’s astonishing makeover?

Somebody with deep expertise on image creation got ahold of the latest darling of the left and glammed her up for her current role as the standard bearer for the socialist wing of the Democrats, the Great Hispanic Hope to lead the “browning of Amerca” toward a radical future. Sometime between 2011 and 2018, Alexandria Ocasio Cortez was transformed from an earnest and nerdy wannabe entrepreneur into a glamorous radical crusader for socialism, the delusion-of-the-moment that has captured the imagination of the malcontent demographic slice of America. Someone with deep knowledge of what expensive make-up can do to remake a human visage into something very different from the au naturel version went to work on her.  In tandem with her transformation from nerd to a female Che Guevara, she morphed from capitalist to membership in a party that wants to “abolish profit.”

Pretty clearly, she was not up to the responsibility of actually running a venture. The Post noted:

But despite her promise to work with “designers, artists and authors that really know the urban story and help develop stories for kids,” The Post could not find any books the publishing house produced.

In addition to failing at developing any products that people would voluntarily pay money for, Ocasio-Cortez also failed to keep on top of her tax obligations, leading to her tax delinquency and eventual warrant issued against her company. In fact, it appears that she let the company go out of business, and promptly consigned it to the Memory Hole, leaving New York State’s tsx collectors high and dry:

 The state requires businesses to pay a corporation tax on a sliding scale based on revenue. The minimum payment last year was $25.

“The company probably got numerous letters from the state and probably ignored them,” one New York City accountant theorized.

Public records show the state dissolved the company in October 2016, which can happen when a business fails to pay corporate taxes or file a return.

The state Tax Department won’t comment on individual companies but typically files warrants as a last resort after trying to collect money.

“This is the first we’re hearing of it, and we won’t have any additional comment until we look into it,” Ocasio-Cortez’s spokesman, Corbin Trent, said Saturday.

If Ocasio-Corte were a conservative, she’d be constantly hounded for comment. Do you think the 90% of the media that is progresive will give this story and prominence?

It’s easy to advocate high taxes on successful people if you don’t pay your own tax bills, of course. But I suspect the real lesson is not so much that Ocasio-Cortez is getting rich off of evading the rules, but rather that she is a total failure at anything requiting practical responsibility, attention to detail, and following the law. After failing, she retreated into the gauzy generalizations of socialism. It is so much easier than running a business to appropriate other people’s money — from the successful ones who do follow the rules and work the 70 hour weeks necessary to make a success of an entrepreneurial venture, juggling the balls, bearing the risk, and ultimately succeeding.  That money can support the lifestyles of “those unwilling to work,” but only until they “eventually run out of other people’s money” – as is happening in Venezuela right now.

Do voters really want to put their future in the hands of someone this irresponsible?

Transgender Being Investigated for Hate Crimes After Allegedly Spraying Chemical on People

When it comes to “hate crimes” investigations, some victims are more equal than others.

Any American who’s watched the parade of overblown, extremely questionable, or outright fraudulent reports of “hate crimes” since President Donald Trump took office knows the mainstream media has displayed its interest in building national hysteria if alleged crimes fit the liberal narrative.

But when the victims and suspects aren’t the stuff of liberal stereotypes? The treatment isn’t anywhere near the same.

The latest incident to show the trend took place last week in New York, where a clearly disturbed individual is accused of a series of attacks apparently targeting victims based race – and the suspect is a transgender “of color,” as the liberals say today.

According Fox News, 37-year-old Thomas J. Heard – whom the report described as a “transgender woman” – is in custody, suspected of a series of assaults on apparent strangers.

According to WABC, Heard was arrested about 4:30 p.m. Friday after threatening a woman with a sharp object.

After Heard was in custody, she became a suspect in several other attacks earlier in the day, including one where she kicked a stranger, identified by WABC as Denise Gannaway.

“All of a sudden, I hear this woman yell at me from behind, ‘I hate you, you expletive expletive!’” Gannaway told WABC.

After Gannaway screamed for her boyfriend for help, the attacker chased both of them, WABC reported.

Is there a media double standard for “hate crimes”?

“I saw her pull something out of her pocket. I didn’t know if it was a gun, I didn’t know if it was a knife – I didn’t know what she had,” she added.

“She says ‘I’m gonna pepper spray you’ and she came around and she actually got me across my face,” Gannaway’s boyfriend, Joe Barbuto, told WABC.

She then followed Barbuto around a corner “and then she pepper sprayed him in the eye. He ran after her,” Gannaway told the station.

Before the attack on Gannaway and Barbuto, Fox reported, police suspect Heard was involved in another incident in which an attacker sprayed a man with a pepper-spray like substance in a subway station, then ran into the street and sprayed five more people.

All of the victims in the case were white.

“Heard was charged with assault as a hate crime, menacing as a hate crime, harassment as a hate crime and assault with criminal possession of a weapon,” WABC reported.

It’s important to remember that Heard is innocent until proven guilty. It’s also important to consider that there’s a strong likelihood of mental illness playing a role in these incidents.

But it’s just as important to note that this story has gotten minimal media attention, and it’s impossible to think that the race and sexuality of the accused – black and transgender – and the race of the victims – all white – does not play a role in that.

If the races had been reversed, there’s no question this story would have been treated differently.

The talking heads on CNN would ascribe it all to yet more racial hatred unleashed by the Trump presidency. MSNBC would have been in overdrive with it all weekend.

Every one of the 7,654 Democrats currently seeking the presidential nomination would likely have been holding grandstanding news conferences and publishing fiery tweets to denounce the rampant racism of the Trump era.

But it was just white people being assaulted, and the suspect is a black transgender. And the media shrugs.

Clearly when it comes to “hate crimes” and the mainstream media, some victims are more equal than others.

NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio Goes Full AOC Commie: Plenty of money in this country and the world, it’s just in the wrong hands

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio (D) went full Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez communist in a statement posted to Twitter Sunday morning, proclaiming there is a conspiracy to keep working people down that keeps the plentiful money in the country and the world in the “wrong hands”.

“All over this country people are working harder and harder, but getting less and less. It‘s not an accident. It’s an agenda to ensure that working people won’t get ahead.”

“Brothers and sisters, there is plenty of money in this country. There is plenty of money in this world. It’s just in the wrong hands.”

de Blasio’s statement came the morning after a late night report by the New York Post warning the City faces a financial crisis as de Blasio has jacked up spending.

…As tax-fleeced businesses and individuals flee en masse, and city public spending surges into the stratosphere, financial analysts say Gotham is perilously near total fiscal disaster.

Long-term debt is now more than $81,100 per household, and Mayor de Blasio is ramping up to spend as much as $3 billion more in the new budget than the current $89.2 billion.

“The city is running a deficit and could be in a real difficult spot if we had a recession, or a further flight of individuals because of tax reform,” said Milton Ezrati, chief economist of Vested…

CNBC reported Friday that New York state is conducting highly intrusive investigations of wealthy residents who have fled the high tax state.

  • New York conducted about 3,000 “non-residency” audits a year between 2010 and 2017, collecting around $1 billion, according to a data company.
  • New York is looking at cellphone records, social media feeds, and veterinary and dentist records in verifying residency.
  • Auditors are even conducting in-home inspections to look inside taxpayers’ refrigerators.

Meanwhile de Blasio’s wife is facing scrutiny for the handling of $850 million in funds  for a mental health program at the same time a high dollar education mayoral initiative was shuttered due to failure, the Daily Mail reported last week.

Bill de Blasio’s wife Chirlane McCray cannot explain where $850million given to the mental health program she champions has gone, according to reports.

In the three years it has been running, organizers at ThriveNYC have largely failed to keep records of the initiative’s achievements – and data that has been collected shows it lagging well behind targets.

Despite that, the program has been granted an even bigger budget going forward and is now on track to spend $1billion over five years.

…Meanwhile de Blasio announced earlier this week that he is mothballing his failed Renewal school program after spending $773million.

The aim of the scheme was to improve 100 of New York’s worst schools, but after three years of trying, just 25 of them improved enough to make it off the list.

Meanwhile, the same number either closed or were merged with other schools while under the initiative.

For de Blasio, money in the right hands appears to mean in Democratic Party run government slush funds and not in the hands of those who earn the money.

Abu Dhabi To Sell Chrysler Building For $700 MILLION Less Than They Paid – ALL THANKS TO AOC STYLE PROGRESSIVE “TUITION FREE” COLLEGE!

Abu Dhabi is selling the Chrysler building (did you know they owned it?) and they’re taking a devastating loss.

People walking on the street below should look up as they pass by to make sure no Sovereign fund managers land on them.

Turns out they’re willing to take that big of a loss because the rent is too damn high!

While the building is owned by one entity, the land under it is owned by another, and the rent is climbing higher than the sky scraper itself.

It reported that the building’s owners do not own the ground beneath it and pay annual rent that went up from $7.75 million to $32 million in 2018 and was set to increase again to $41 million in 2028.

Citing brokers, the newspaper said those fees ‘have eaten away at much if not all of the building’s revenue.’

The building also has some 400,000 square feet (37,160 square meters) of space that is either vacant or will become so in the coming years, the Journal said. (more..)

We have repeated this information from our prior reports to re-iterate that, although much operational progress has been accomplished during 2018, the persistent deficit levels suggest that the challenge of restoring financial health continues.

When comparing the financial results of 2018 to 2017, there are several substantial events that have occurred. The improvement in operating results of $17.7 million results from both continuing or structural events, and some events that may or may not be repeatable. The most notable of these items include:

Increase in investment return utilized for operations of $12.3 million ($50.0 million in 2018 and $37.7 million in 2017). This is principally the result of a reset in rents on the Chrysler land lease. This is a structural event, and in fact, there are contractual increases throughout the term of the lease, which expires in 2147. The contractual rents received under the Chrysler Building lease increased from $7.8 million in 2017 to $20.1 million in 2018, and will increase to $32.5 million in 2019 through 2027, with additional increases thereafter. This contractual change in 2018 results in an improvement in the operating results of over $12 million from 2017, with the further increase in 2019 contributing to generating positive cash results of operations.

CONCLUSION

I strongly suggest that we go after Cooper.  It must charge tuition to most students within realistic budget constraints.  Financing free tuition to the tune of $32m annually at the certain demise of the Chrysler building and the looting of its owners must not be allowed.
