Listen: Florida lawmaker calls 911 on Herald reporter, tells dispatcher ‘My life is threatened’

The Miami Herald revealed on Tuesday that Florida state Sen. Daphne Campbell (D) called 911 on one of its reporters following a candidate event on Aug. 9.

An audio recording of the exchange was released by Miami-Dade police this week, wherein the lawmaker can be heard telling a dispatcher, “Can you please send a police for me, please, right now. My life is threatened.”

What happened?

In the call, Campbell made it clear to the dispatcher that she is a senator, said the alleged threats toward her came from a white woman wearing a “colorful dress,” and acknowledged that her accused attacker did not have a weapon.

“I have a lady who threatened me a lot,” Campbell said. “I’m not going to argue with no one. She threatened me right now. I need protection.”

A police officer responded to the scene and questioned Herald reporter Sarah Blaskey, but made no arrests.

The Herald’s executive editor, Aminda Marques Gonzalez defended her reporter in the incident, saying “Sarah Blaskey was simply doing her job. Asking a question is not a threat.”
Reporter David Ovalle noted in the piece that Campbell accused the Herald of racism in the past, and added that this isn’t the first time Sen. Campbell has called the cops on a member of the press.
In May, Campbell called the law on RISE NEWS publisher Rich Robinson for filming her during a public debate against her primary opponent.

What’s Campbell’s background?

Sen. Campbell was first elected to the state House in 2010, serving three terms before winning her Senate seat in 2016, which was created following redistricting. She lost her re-election bid on Tuesday to wealthy former prosecutor Jason Pizzo.

The Herald has covered what reporter David Smiley called a “long track record of ethical missteps and criminal investigations” that “made her one of Florida’s more controversial elected officials.”

Campbell, the only Haitian-American state legislator, has been accused of accepting unreported campaign donations, lying about living in her district, fibbing about her dead mother, and a laundry list of other personal and professional violations including Medicaid fraud.

Even Florida’s Democratic Party alleged a few weeks ago that Campbell was involved in an illegal campaign flyer scheme, saying they suspected her due to her “history of questionable ethics.”

Facebook Expands ‘Watch’ Video Platform Amid Conservative Purge

Facebook is expanding its Watch video platform, which currently funds news shows from CNN’s Anderson Cooper and far-left outlet Mic, at the same time that Mark Zuckerberg’s social media powerhouse continues to crack down on conservatives.

“Over the past year, we funded a number of original shows for Watch, and many have found strong, engaged audiences. Our funding strategy has always been about kick-starting an ecosystem of content,” declared Facebook. “We will continue investing in some original shows, and we will really lean into supporting a wide range of amazing video content from creators and publishers around the world to help our partners find success with their videos.”

In June, the company revealed they would be fully-funding original video content from CNN’s Anderson Cooper, far-left news outlet Mic, ABC News, and anti-Trump news anchor Jorge Ramos —whose daughter worked on Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential election campaign.

“Earlier this year we made a commitment to show news that is trustworthy, informative, and local on Facebook. As a part of that commitment, we are creating a dedicated section within Watch for news shows produced exclusively for Facebook by news publishers,” declared the platform’s Head of Global News Partnerships, Campbell Brown, in June. “With this effort, we are testing a destination for high quality and timely news content on the platform.”

Facebook is doubling down on fully-funded video programming as it faces criticism from President Donald Trump about its censorship of conservatives. The platform recently marked a wide range of articles from Breitbart News and the New York Post as “spam,” which the company later called a “bug.” Conservative employees have united to protest what they call the “intolerant” liberal culture of the company.

Facebook Watch rolls out globally on Thursday. The site’s users will have a personalized Watch feed, which will include programming created by pages and creators they already follow, along with Facebook’s fully-funded content inevitably added as suggested viewing.

The Silicon Valley giant is also enabling content creators to monetize their videos by including ads. Similar to YouTube, Facebook will enable ad breaks before videos play and “mid-roll,” or during the video itself. Video ads are immediately available the U.S., U.K., and select other countries, and will expand elsewhere next month.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai Refuses to Testify Before Senate

Google CEO Sundar Pichai has refused to testify before the Senate Intelligence Committee in September.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai refused to testify at the Senate Intelligence Committee hearing, which is set to include Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg, and the company instead offered to send Senior Vice President for Global Affairs, Kent Walker, who was dismissed as not being “sufficiently high up in the company,” according to Fortune.

Despite this, Sen. Richard Burr (R-NC) claimed he will not subpoena Pichai, declaring, “I don’t normally subpoena people to be part of the solution… Google chooses not to participate and being part of the solution. That’s a decision they made.”

Pichai was criticized by both Republican and Democrat senators for refusing to testify, with Sen. Mark Warner (D-VA) calling the move a “great mistake.”

“This is the United States Senate, this is an important issue, and we deserve to hear from the decision-makers, not the people who carry out the decisions,” added Sen. Angus King (I-ME).

The Senate hearing may have included tough questions for Pichai about his company’s decision not to work with the Pentagon on drone technology, but still create a censored search app to please the Chinese government.

This week, President Trump warned Google, along with other Big Tech companies.

“I think what Google and what others are doing – if you look at what is going on with Twitter and if you look at what’s going on in Facebook, they better be careful because you can’t do that to people… You can’t do it,” expressed President Trump, adding that they face the “serious charge” of mass-coordinated censorship and political manipulation.

“I think that Google and Twitter and Facebook, they are really treading on very, very troubled territory and they have to be careful,” he continued. “It is not fair to large portions of the population.”

Trump also criticized Google Search’s overwhelmingly biased news results, which prioritized content from CNN and excluded major conservative news outlets.

MSNBC Host Mocks Florida Gun Laws

MSNBC host Ali Velshi mocked Florida gun laws in the wake of the Jacksonville shooting, but the accused attacker used a gun that was purchased in Maryland.

In fact, Jacksonville Sheriff Michael Williams indicated the attacker was armed with two handguns, a .45 and 9mm, and the ATF made clear both were legally purchased in Maryland.

But this did not top Velshi from taking on Florida gun laws in a video he tweeted out Tuesday.

Velshi pointed out that Florida does not have a licensing requirement for gun purchasers, a “firearm registration” requirement, nor does the state require a permit to carry a rifle. He contrasted the last point with the fact that the state does require a permit to carry a handgun, and he never mentioned the practicality of carrying a handgun versus a rifle.

Velshi also pointed out that the state of Florida does not allow cities and municipalities to institute gun laws that are more strict than the laws in place at the state level. This is called preemption, and the NRA-ILA reports that the state of Maryland “generally” limits local gun control in the same way.

Nevertheless, the alleged Jacksonville attacker did not buy his gun in Florida. He bought it in Maryland where he did have to get a license in order to buy the firearm, and he had to register it too. But these things did not hinder him in the least.

A few more interesting facts from the NRA-ILA: Like Florida, Maryland requires no license for long gun purchases, has no registration for long gun purchases, and does not have a “permit to carry” for long guns.

South Africa Withdraws Land Seizure Bill Following Trump’s Tweet

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) – South Africa’s parliament withdrew an expropriation bill it passed in 2016 that allowed the state to make compulsory purchases of land to redress racial disparities in ownership, the ruling African National Congress (ANC) said on Tuesday.

The thrust of the bill, which had not been signed into law, has been overtaken by a proposal by the ANC to change the constitution to allow the expropriation of land without compensation.

The bill was meant to enable the state to pay for land at a value determined by a government adjudicator and then expropriate it for the “public interest”, ending the willing-buyer, willing-seller approach to land reform.

However, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa announced on Aug. 1 the ANC plans to change the constitution to allow the expropriation of land without compensation, as whites still own most of South Africa’s territory.

South Africans are taking part in public hearings on land reform that are being held countrywide, to give their comments on the ANC’s proposal to change the constitution.

“The bill in its current form would need to be re-considered in light of the process of reviewing Section 25 of the constitution for the expropriation of land without compensation,” Nonceba Mhlauli, a spokeswoman for the ANC’s chief whip, said.

“Were the bill to be re-introduced, it would contain a clause or clauses reflecting expropriation of land without compensation if that is the way that South Africans have chosen to go,” she said.

VIDEO: Meet FBI Hero John Robertson Who Revealed Trove of Hillary Emails on Weiner Laptop – Blew the Lid on Comey-Strzok Criminality

FBI agent John Robertson is proud of the work he does exposing and arresting child predators.

John was assigned to the Anthony Weiner case, a top Democrat married to Hillary Clinton adviser Huma Abedin. During his investigation of Weiner’s computer John discovered thousands of Hillary Clinton emails and blew the whistle on the Comey-McCabe and Strzok cover-up of evidence.

John Robertson will go down in history who saved children from predators and saved a nation from Deep State criminals.

Via USA Network:

Paul Sperry wrote about John Robertson at The Federalist.

One career FBI special agent involved in the case complained to New York colleagues that officials in Washington tried to “bury” the new trove of evidence, which he believed contained the full archive of Clinton’s emails — including long-sought missing messages from her first months at the State Department.

RealClearInvestigations pieced together the FBI’s handling of the massive new email discovery from the “Weiner laptop.” This months-long investigation included a review of federal court records and affidavits, cellphone text messages, and emails sent by key FBI personnel, along with internal bureau memos, reviews and meeting notes documented in government reports. Information also was gleaned through interviews with FBI agents and supervisors, prosecutors and other law enforcement officials, as well as congressional investigators and public-interest lawyers.

If the FBI “soft-pedaled” the original investigation of Clinton’s emails, as some critics have said, it out-and-out suppressed the follow-up probe related to the laptop, sources for this article said.

Reports: FBI Admits it Leaks to Media, Then Uses Stories to Get Warrants

Jonathan Moffa, an FBI special agent, admitted to Congress his agency leaks stories to the news media, then uses the resulting stories to back up assertions in warrant applications, according to a series of reports Tuesday.

Moffa, who worked alongside fired anti-Trump agent Peter Strzok on the Hillary Clinton email and “Russia” investigations, testified last Friday at closed door sessions of the House Judiciary and House Oversight Committees. A source with knowledge of those proceedings was quoted by the Daily Caller News Foundation (DCNF) late Monday, claiming Moffa had admitted to representatives that the FBI uses the controversial practice, long-suspected of playing a role in obtaining Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) warrants against one-time Trump aide Carter Page.

“He more or less admitted that the FBI/DOJ have previously leaked info to the press and then used stories from the press as justifications for FISA warrants,” the source told DCNF’s Chuck Ross.

The admission was then the subject of second report by Fox News, which quotes a source saying Moffa admitted the leak-and-reuse tactic at least “had been a practice in the past.”

It is not clear from either report if the DCNF and Fox News are relying on the same source.

According to Fox News, Moffa was a topic of more than one of Lisa Page and Peter Strzok’s now infamous texts during the waning days of the Obama administration.

House Intelligence Committee chair Devin Nunes (R-CA) released a memo in February containing the bombshell revelation that the FBI had used a September 2016 Yahoo! News article as evidence to convince the U.S. Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (FISC) to allow them to wiretap and monitor Page. The FBI’s warrant application suggest’s Yahoo! writer Michael Isikoff’s article corroborates former British spy Christopher Steele’s infamous “dossier” on Trump and his associates, funded by Never Trump billionaire Paul Singer, the Hillary Clinton campaign, and the Democratic National Committee. The dossier contains not only allegations of ties between Trump’s circles and Russian intelligence, but graphic descriptions of deviant practices by Trump in a Russian hotel. Former FBI director James Comey famously labeled the dossier “salacious and unverified.”

But rather than the Yahoo! article providing verification, it became clear with the Nunes Memo that the article had exactly the same source as the dossier itself: Chrisopher Steele.

With Moffa’s reported admissions, it becomes increasingly unlikely the FBI was unaware of this circular sourcing and suggests the Bureau itself may have been involved in the attempt to make the contents of an unverified dossier funded by Donald Trump’s political opponents look like independently reported evidence.

These revelations intensify the political situation surrounding once-senior (now demoted) Justice Department official Bruce Ohr’s testimony before one of the same committees before which Moffa appeared last week. Ohr was scheduled to speak just hours after these reports dropped. His wife, Nellie Ohr, is a senior official at Fusion GPS, the same opposition research firm from which the Steele dossier originates.

House Freedom Caucus Chairman Mark Meadows (R-NC) immediately seized on what he saw as a significant development on the eve of Ohr’s testimony on Fox News and on Twitter:

The now-fired Strzok’s testimony suggested Ohr was possibly the official who introduced his wife’s firm’s dossier to the FBI’s investigation. Ohr was demoted to a human resources position at DOJ from his role as associate deputy attorney general after the controversy over his involvement  began to be investigated last year. President Donald Trump has continued to call for his complete dismissal.

Blue-Collar Workers Increasingly Optimistic Under Trump

Nearly two years into the Trump presidency, blue-collar workers are increasingly optimistic about their social and economic circumstances.

A new survey, conducted by the Harris Poll, found that 85 percent of blue-collar workers said their lives are advancing in "the right direction." The survey, commissioned by Express Employment Professionals, took place between July 9 and July 23. Data were collected from 1,049 blue-collar workers from across the nation who are employed in professions requiring manual labor.

Across the board, the results indicate America’s blue-collar workforce is sanguine about the nation’s current economic outlook and their own standing. Apart from the 85 percent of blue-collar Americans who said their lives are going in the right direction, 69 percent said their local communities are on the right path, and 58 percent view their states as being on a positive course.

The poll found 51 percent of blue-collar workers believe the country is heading in the right direction, a figure 12-percentage points higher than the 39 percent recorded amongst all Americans in a similar July Harvard-Harris Poll.

Overall, 55 percent of blue-collar Americans expressed they were better off today compared with five years ago.

Not only are blue-collar workers bullish about their current economic situation, they are also upbeat about the future. The survey found that 80 percent of blue-collar workers are optimistic about the future, with over one-third stating they were "very optimistic."

Among those with children, 88 percent of respondents indicated they believed their children were likely to attain a better future. This stands in stark contrast to data collected by the Pew Research Center in 2017, which showed only 37 percent of Americans believing their children would grow up to be better off financially.

Bill Stoller, the CEO of Express Employment Professionals, said his organization commissioned the poll to ascertain the optimism of blue-collar Americans, especially since so much attention is being paid to the group ahead of the 2018 midterms.

"There’s been a great deal of chatter about the future and frustrations of America’s blue-collar workers," Stoller said. "Our survey reveals that blue collar workers are upbeat, optimistic, and proud of the work they do. While the news is often full of stories about economic anxieties, this survey shows workers who are exceptionally optimistic."

In July 2018, the economy added 37,000 manufacturing jobs, boosting the total number created in the sector in the past 12 months to 327,000—the fastest rate of growth in 23 years. Likewise, the construction industry has added over 308,000 jobs in the past year, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The soaring economy, buoyed by the president’s tax cut package, has also translated into increased wages and bonuses for the American worker.

Over two-thirds of blue-collar workers—68 percent—reported receiving a pay increase in the past year, according to the Harris Poll. Of those who received a pay increase, 39 percent of respondents stated their raise equaled more than 5 percent of their annual earnings.

Despite the strong economic optimism found among blue-collar Americans, the group as a whole holds low opinions of elected officials and partisan politics.

Approximately 70 percent of the poll’s respondents expressed distrust in "elected government officials" and only 51 percent said the federal government advocates pro-business policies. On the topic of partisan affiliation, 39 percent said the Republican Party did a better job of helping blue-collar workers, compared with 36 percent who said the same of the Democratic Party. Almost one in four believed neither party did a sufficient job of helping blue-collar Americans.

Such numbers don’t bode well for the Democratic Party, which has long been identified as the home of blue-collar and working-class voters. A breakdown of voting patterns from the 2016 presidential election shows Trump did exceedingly better among this constituency than previous Republican contenders for the White House.

Complicating matters further for the Democratic Party is the fact that voters belonging to labor unions, long a vital component of the party’s base, are faring well under the economic policies of the Trump administration.

The Harris Poll found skilled trade workers, those more likely to belong to labor unions, indicated greater optimism about their present circumstances than general labor workers, who are less likely to be union members.

This was exhibited when the survey’s respondents were asked if their jobs provided "a good living" with which to "financially support" their families. In total, 80 percent of blue-collar workers said their current jobs provided the means to support their families, compared with 85 percent of skilled trade workers and only 72 percent of general laborers. Furthermore, 61 percent of skilled trade workers expressed they were better off today than five years ago, compared with 45 percent of general labor workers.

Mark Glyptis, the president of United Steelworkers Local 2911 in Weirton, W.Va., told the Washington Free Beacon there was no doubt about the economic resurgence being witnessed.

"There aren’t any questions that the economy is much better today," Glyptis said. "There is a huge demand for workers and skilled workers. In many cases, the demand for skilled workers greatly exceeds the number available."

Glyptis, who in the past has spoken favorably of the president and his trade policies, pointed to Trump’s economic strategy and his commitment to American manufacturing as the root cause of blue-collar optimism.

"Previous administrations, both Democratic and Republican, spent too much time worrying about foreign unemployment rates while neglecting our domestic economy," Glyptis said. "President Trump has made American manufacturing—especially steel—more competitive on the world stage by ensuring a level playing field. We didn’t have that ability under previous presidents."

"I have a big sense of optimism about the direction our country is headed," Glyptis added.

Sarah Palin, Loyal Running Mate, Excluded from John McCain’s Funeral

Former Alaska governor Sarah Palin, who was Sen. John McCain (R-AZ)’s running mate in the 2008 presidential election, has been excluded from his funeral.

Breitbart News has independently confirmed an earlier report in People magazine, which reported that Palin was not sent an invitation, and was told through intermediaries to stay away from the ceremony.

McCain fundraiser Carla Eudy confirmed to People that Palin had not been invited — possibly, People speculated, at the best of the McCain family.

The news comes on the tenth anniversary of the date in 2008 when Palin was announced as McCain’s pick for Vice President.

Palin now joins President Donald Trump on the list of those barred from the funeral.

But unlike Trump, Palin never feuded with McCain and never criticized him.

When news broke on Saturday of McCain’s passing, Palin said: “Today we lost an American original. Sen. John McCain was a maverick and a fighter, never afraid to stand for his beliefs. John never took the easy path in life — and through sacrifice and suffering he inspired others to serve something greater than self.

“John McCain was my friend. I will remember the good times. My family and I send prayers for Cindy and the McCain family.”

Last year, when McCain was reported to have said that he regretted choosing Palin instead of Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-VT), Palin described the news as a “gut punch” but refused to blame McCain personally, telling the UK Daily Mail that she blamed his “ghostwriters” for such reports.

When McCain selected Palin as his running mate, the two had both built reputations as corruption-busting “maverick” leaders who were not afraid to buck their own parties.

After the 2008 election, they moved in separate political directions.

Palin became an inspirational figure for the Tea Party and for grassroots conservatives in general. McCain campaigned as a conservative border hawk in his 2010 re-election race, but became a harsh critic of the Tea Party, calling Sens. Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Rand Paul (R-KY) “wacko birds.”

Many in the Beltway blamed Palin for McCain’s loss in 2008 — even though Barack Obama had benefited from a sudden financial crisis and a biased press corps. That view seemed to have seeped into McCain’s own thinking.

Still, Palin never took offense, and always honored McCain. Even after being excluded from the funeral, she declined to criticize him.

People quoted a source close to the Palin family: “[O]ut of respect for Sen. McCain and his family we have nothing to add at this point. The Palin family will always cherish their friendship with the McCains and hold those memories dear.”

McCain will be laid to rest on Sunday in Annapolis, following several days of memorial events and ceremonies.
