Senator John McCain (R-AZ) passed away on Saturday after a year-long battle with cancer.

Senator McCain had a long career of serving his country. He was captured and imprisoned by the North Vietnamese from October 1967 to until his release in March 1973.

John McCain was the Republican presidential candidate in 2008 and lost to far left Democrat Barack Obama.

McCain was loved by many and criticized by many others.  The liberal media found a new found love for McCain when his attacks on Donald Trump and his supporters made headlines.

Several Americans objected to his frequent calls for war.

Here is a complete list of John McCain calling for war around the world.

Senator John McCain in Syria on a fact-finding mission in 2013

The list is of course a history of all the instances McCain has called for US-led intervention around the world. There’s obviously a long history here, so Geopolitics Alert has compiled the largest examples from Europe to Asia. We’ll start with the obvious wars first.

Afghanistan and Iraq
Obviously every US senator (besides California’s Barbara Lee) voted to give president George W. Bush the power to invade Afghanistan following the events of September 11th. However, McCain wasn’t happy with just moving to invade Afghanistan. No, he had other targets on his mind as early as the day after the towers fell.

Despite McCain’s claim in 2014 that “the Iraq war probably wouldn’t have happened” if he had won the 2000 Republican primary and then general election, this assertion seems ridiculous. On September 12th 2001, McCain appeared on MSNBC presenting a long list of countries he felt were providing a “safe harbor” to groups like al Qaeda. This list of course included Iraq and several other countries that appear later on this list.

Syria
Another country on that 2001 list (of course) was Syria. Now, the Bush regime may have never gotten a chance to continue toppling Mideast countries (thanks to the failure in Iraq and the exposure of that war being sold on lies). But McCain seemingly never lost sight of his hatred for Bashar Al-Assad.

Shortly after the Arab Spring “broke out” in Syria, McCain – and his constant partner in war crimes Sen. Lindsey Graham – quickly found communication channels with the “Syrian opposition.” Just a few short months after the US endorsed protests in Syria (even having their ambassador attend), McCain and Graham began calling for arms to start flowing to the Free Syrian Army and other “rebel” groups.

Libya
McCain’s plans for Syria never quite worked the way he wanted but he probably should’ve know they would never yield a positive result. If McCain didn’t want to look at Iraq to prove that point, he had another more recent example he could’ve used: the NATO intervention in Libya.

It was less than a year before McCain wanted to arm Syrian takfiris that he had supported with the bombing and no fly zones in Libya. McCain even wanted tougher actions against the country. Which has now become an anarchic Wild West that’s home to all sorts of horrors from the Islamic State to a new slave trade.

West and Central Africa
McCain is also a champion of the “war on terror” in other parts of Africa. While McCain hasn’t directly supported terrorists in some countries in Africa, he still has called for more US intervention across the continent.

This list includes countries dealing with Islamic insurgencies, such as Mali. McCain has also called for plans like “deploying Special Forces” to rescue girls kidnapped by Boko Haram in Nigeria and intervention in Sudan, where McCain and his wife have invested money for some time.

Iran
Another country on the list of hated nations originally put forth by Bush undersecretary of defense Paul Wolfowitz, and also another long time target of McCain, is of course Iran.

Although McCain has always said “he prays” there will never be at war with Iran, the man constantly calls for it and even jokes about bombing the country when he feels the mood is right. The truth of the matter is, McCain’s positions towards Iran are so hostile that even flagship neoconservative institutions like the Cato Institute think he is too hawkish.

Bosnia and Kosovo
But McCain isn’t satisfied with just backing salafi jihadists in the traditional Middle East and North African theaters. He’s also backed violent radicals across the fringes of Europe. This trend really started in the mid 1990’s when McCain was a vocal supporter of then president Bill Clinton’s war in Bosnia.

Many of the Muslims traveling to Bosnia joining the mujahideen there have joined groups like IS in recent years. And IS flags can occasionally be seen in the Sunni areas of Bosnia now. McCain was still backing potential takfiri movements, recently accusing Russia of interfering in local affairs, and calling for more US intervention in the country.

McCain made similar decisions when he advocated US intervention in Kosovo in the late 90’s. In the Kosovo conflict, McCain backed the Kosovo Liberation Army: a genocidal jihadist organization with ties to Al Qaeda under Osama Bin Laden.

Ukraine
Don’t be fooled into thinking that McCain only supports jihadists in Eastern Europe though! He also backs the overt Nazis acting as death squads for Kiev in the ongoing Ukrainian conflict.

This of course started in 2014, but McCain has continued to pledge support for Kiev’s crimes in the Donbass region to this day. This is all par for the course in McCain’s larger theme of challenging Russia– the country he believes controls the separatists in eastern Ukraine.

Russia
The story of McCain’s hatred of Russia spans back to the Cold War. We won’t get into McCain’s fear of communism that’s evolved into just general Russophobia. But we will say he didn’t have many excuses to focus on making threats towards Moscow for a good 15-20 year stretch.

This changed in 2008, with the war in South Ossetia between Georgia and Russia. During this conflict McCain was the loudest voice saying the US “should immediately call a meeting of the North Atlantic Council to assess Georgia’s security and review measures NATO can take to contribute to stabilizing this very dangerous situation.”

This same situation repeated in Ukraine in 2014 but McCain’s worst comments came this year. As soon as the US Intelligence Community’s accused Russia of interference in the 2016 US elections– and without any evidence– McCain was first to say the event was an “act of war.”

North Korea
The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DRPK/North Korea) was also an early target of McCain’s making his September 12th wish list. More recently though, the restyled “Trump opponent” McCain was all-in on the new regime’s saber rattling. Calling on Trump to strike the nuclear armed country.

Bonus: China
China is kind of in its own class with McCain, who’s made strange vague threats towards the country in the past. Such as “the Arab spring is coming to China,” whatever that means. China may be a target on the periphery for McCain but he does still encourage antagonizing the country to this day. Calling for things like more “freedom of navigation drills” and other naval exercises in the South China Sea.

Bombshell archbishop letter demands Pope Francis resign in cover-up of McCarrick sex abuse scandal

The Vatican’s former U.S. ambassador has dropped a bombshell letter that says Pope Francis should resign for his alleged role in covering up sexual abuse allegations against Cardinal Theodore McCarrick.

What happened?

McCarrick resigned from the College of Cardinals in June amid sexual abuse allegations. The College advises the pope on the governance of the Catholic Church and elects a successor if a pope dies or resigns.

In an 11-page statement dated August 22, Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò writes that Pope Benedict had imposed “canonical sanctions” on Cardinal McCarrick between 2009 to 2010 that forbid him from traveling, celebrating Mass in public, or participating in public meetings. McCarrick was relegated to a life of prayer and penance, according to the statement. Viganò added that Pope Francis later lifted these sanctions and made McCarrick a close personal adviser.

Viganò states that he came forward because bishops “must have the courage to tear down the culture of secrecy and publicly confess the truths we have kept hidden.”

His letter concludes with a call for Pope Francis’ resignation.

Viganò wrote: “…Now that “the corruption has reached the very top of the Church’s hierarchy, my conscience dictates that I reveal those truths regarding the heart-breaking case of the Archbishop Emeritus of Washington, D.C., Theodore McCarrick, which I came to know in the course of the duties.”

Cardinal McCarrick had a long friendship with Cardinal Bergoglio and played and “important part” in his recent election, according to Viganò. That led to the pope to continue using McCarrick as a trusted aide in the naming of bishops even after learning of his misdeeds.

Viganò alleges that he informed the pope of McCarrick’s abuse on June 23, 2013, but Francis “continued to cover for him.”

Francis still “did not take into account the sanctions that Pope Benedict had imposed on him,” Viganò stated in the letter, which was published Sunday by The National Catholic Register, LifeSiteNews, and other outlets.

Viganò claims that Pope Francis only took action against Cardinal McCarrick when he was forced to do so by the public report of the cardinal’s abuse of a minor. He also believes he did so “to save his image in the media.”

Viganò joins other bishops and priests who have recently linked together the abuse crisis and the cover-up of an extensive “homosexual network” in the Catholic Church.

“These homosexual networks, which are now widespread in many dioceses, seminaries, religious orders, etc., act under the concealment of secrecy and lies,” he wrote, “and strangle innocent victims and priestly vocations, and are strangling the entire Church.”

Did he call the Pope ‘evil’?

Viganò concludes his report by calling the pope “evil.”

“I want to recall this indefectible truth of the Church’s holiness to the many people who have been so deeply scandalized by the abominable and sacrilegious behavior of the former Archbishop of Washington, Theodore McCarrick; by the grave, disconcerting and sinful conduct of Pope Francis and by the conspiracy of silence of so many pastors, and who are tempted to abandon the Church, disfigured by so many ignominies,” he said.

He continued:

We need to intervene where evil is spreading; for evil spreads where daring Christians who oppose evil with good are lacking. If this is rightly to be considered a serious moral responsibility for every believer, how much graver is it for the Church’s supreme pastor, who in the case of McCarrick not only did not oppose evil but associated himself in doing evil with someone he knew to be deeply corrupt. He followed the advice of someone he knew well to be a pervert, thus multiplying exponentially with his supreme authority the evil done by McCarrick. And how many other evil pastors is Francis still continuing to prop up in their active destruction of the Church!

Viganò also calls for the the pope and anyone else involved in cover-ups to resign.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez latest Democrat to prove #AbolishICE is unserious

It’s always fun to see what happens when politicians admit their campaign positions shouldn’t be taken seriously – especially when it’s a position which vaulted them into the limelight.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the democratic socialist congressional candidate from New York, is the latest to prove this particular refrain in a tweet ‘defending’ herself from criticism from Town Hall’s Katie Pavlich over the deportation of Nazi Jakiw Palij.

Oh, the absolute shock the alleged future of the Democratic Party is perfectly fine with restricted immigration, quotas, and a confusing visa system! Note sarcasm, as it’s not shocking at all.

After all, Ocasio-Cortez may have hinged her candidacy on democratic-socialism and #AbolishICE, but her website is rather vague at exactly what she’d do with current immigration law.

It’s time to abolish ICE, clear the path to citizenship, and protect the rights of families to remain together.

The Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency was created in 2003, in the same suite of post-9/11 legislation as the Patriot Act and the Iraq War. Its founding was part of an unchecked expansion of executive powers that led to the widespread erosion of Americans’ civil rights. Unlike prior immigration enforcement under the INS, ICE operates outside the scope of the Department of Justice and is unaccountable to our nation’s standards of due process.

Now we see the consequences: young children are being ripped from their parents and kept in detention centers without due process and without accountability to Congress.

As overseen by the Trump administration, ICE operates with virtually no accountability, ripping apart families and holding our friends and neighbors indefinitely in inhumane detention centers scattered across the United States. Alex believes that if we are to uphold civic justice, we must abolish ICE and see to it that our undocumented neighbors are treated with the dignity and respect owed to all people, regardless of citizenship status.

It shouldn’t be surprising to see this as it falls in line with Democratic Socialists of America’s stance of focusing on the “undocumented immigrants” in the U.S. with their 2013 bilge about comprehensive immigration reform and claiming “the struggle for just immigration reform as an integral part of the ongoing struggle for workers’ rights and for democracy.” How trite!

The Senate’s democratic socialist in chief, Bernie Sanders, is also not known for his support of unrestricted immigration. He expressed his dissatisfaction with the issue to Vox in 2015.

Open borders? No, that’s a Koch brothers proposal…That’s a right-wing proposal, which says essentially there is no United States…It would make everybody in America poorer —you’re doing away with the concept of a nation state, and I don’t think there’s any country in the world that believes in that. If you believe in a nation state or in a country called the United States or UK or Denmark or any other country, you have an obligation in my view to do everything we can to help poor people. What right-wing people in this country would love is an open-border policy. Bring in all kinds of people, work for $2 or $3 an hour, that would be great for them. I don’t believe in that. I think we have to raise wages in this country, I think we have to do everything we can to create millions of jobs.

You know what youth unemployment is in the United States of America today? If you’re a white high school graduate, it’s 33 percent, Hispanic 36 percent, African American 51 percent. You think we should open the borders and bring in a lot of low-wage workers, or do you think maybe we should try to get jobs for those kids?

I think from a moral responsibility we’ve got to work with the rest of the industrialized world to address the problems of international poverty, but you don’t do that by making people in this country even poorer.

Sanders 2016 acolyte Richard Eskow later suggested those who favor unfettered immigration “sometimes comes embarrassingly close to making the kind of argument that was once deployed in defense of slavery: Sure, they have a tough life in this country, but it must be so much better for them here than it was in their old country.” How immigration friendly!

Socialists have long been against more open immigration with the USSR’s “Iron Curtain” of not letting anyone into their borders. China only recently made their immigration laws more liberalized – but still restricted. The socialist paradise (note sarcasm) of Cuba also has stricter immigration laws – for visitors and expats – and only recently slightly loosened them for people of Cuban descent. The notion these countries wanted or want to take in more people is as real as those who believe getting bitten by a radioactive spider will give them superpowers.

This is why those who believe Ocasio-Cortez and her ilk are serious about loosening American immigration laws through their #AbolishICE calls are mistaken. The Democrats aren’t interested in letting more people into the U.S., they just want to be the ones saying “We love you!” to illegal immigrants because they might get more votes. The reality is they favor the same restrictive immigration policies as White House senior adviser Stephen Miller.

Republicans should realize this and just laugh at these calls to #AbolishICE because there wouldn’t be any real changes to U.S. immigration policy or enforcement. ICE would get a new coat of paint, name, and that’s it. It’s a talking point for votes.

It would be better for Ocasio-Cortez opponents to focus on her universal health care, revitalization of the Post Office, gun control, and federal job guarantees positions. Those are the ones where the most damage to not only the American economy but freedom, in general, would happen.

John McCain Successor Won’t Be Named Until After Burial, Gov. Doug Ducey’s Office Says Update: Burial Sept. 2

Arizona doesn’t need a legacy pick.

Via AZ Central:

Gov. Doug Ducey will wait to name a successor to John McCain until after the late senator has been buried at the U.S. Naval Academy Cemetery in Maryland, an aide to the governor told The Arizona Republic on Saturday.

“Out of respect for the life and legacy of Senator John McCain and his family, Governor Ducey will not be making any announcements about an appointment until after the Senator is laid to rest,” Ducey’s senior adviser Daniel Ruiz II said in a statement.

“Now is a time for remembering and honoring a consequential life well lived.”

McCain died Saturday at his family’s home near Sedona after a 13-month battle with brain cancer. He was 81.

The timing of McCain’s burial is unknown. His body is expected to lay in state in both Phoenix and Washington, D.C. Services in both cities are also expected, but details have not been announced.

Archbishop Blows Whistle, Says Pope Should Resign

The sexual scandals rocking the Catholic Church have been gathering strength for more than two decades, but the one that’s exploding now might be even more shocking than its long line of predecessors:

A veteran archbishop in the church, a man who once served as the Vatican’s ambassador to the United States, publicly released a scathing letter about the church’s ongoing homosexual abuse scandals — and demanded Pope Francis himself resign as head of the church.

In an 11-page letter, Archbishop Carla Maria Vigano, a former papal nuncio, accused Francis of reinstating former Washington Archbishop Theodore McCarrick, who had been placed under sanction by Pope Benedict XVI for decades of homosexual relations with adult seminariarians and sexual abuse of an altar boy, according to LifeSite News.

In July, McCarrick was forced to resign as a cardinal, and ordered to live a life of “prayer and repentance” until he is tried by the church, according to a report by The Associated Press from July 19.

In his testimony, Viganò provides a detailed account, including names, dates and actions, of why he believes the pope knew about McCarrick abuses when he reinstated him after taking over for Benedict.

What is included in the document could be nothing short of heart-wrenching and devastating for the Catholic faithful:

On page nine, the hammer is dropped: “Pope Francis has repeatedly asked for total transparency in the Church and for bishops and faithful to act with parrhesia. The faithful throughout the world also demand this of him in an exemplary manner.”

“He must honestly state when he first learned about the crimes committed by McCarrick, who abused his authority with seminarians and priests. In any case, the Pope learned about it from me on June 23, 2013, and continued to cover for him.”

Do you believe Pope Francis should resign?

“He did not take into account the sanctions that Pope Benedict had imposed on him and made him his trusted counselor along with (Honduran Cardinal Oscar Rodriguez) Maradiaga. The latter (Maradiaga) is so confident of the Pope’s protection that he can dismiss as ‘gossip’ the heartfelt appeals of dozens of his seminarians, who found the courage to write to him after one of them tried to commit suicide over homosexual abuse in the seminary.”

On the last page, while he holds hope for the faithful and out the future, the archbishop had harsh words for the pope and others. “Pope Francis must be the first to set a good example for cardinals and bishops who covered up McCarrick’s abuses and resign along with all of them.”

At the beginning of the testimony, Viganò explained what a painful and difficult decision it was for him to come forward. He also shared why he ultimately felt he had no choice but to do so:

“I had always believed and hoped that the hierarchy of the Church could find within itself the spiritual resources and strength to tell the whole truth, to amend and to renew itself. That is why, even though I had repeatedly been asked to do so, I always avoided making statements to the media, even when it would have been my right to do so, in order to defend myself against the calumnies published about me, even by high-ranking prelates of the Roman Curia.”

“But now that the corruption has reached the very top of the Church’s hierarchy, my conscience dictates that I reveal those truths regarding the heart-breaking case of the Archbishop Emeritus of Washington, D.C., Theodore McCarrick, which I came to know in the course of the duties entrusted to me by St. John Paul II, as Delegate for Pontifical Representations, from 1998 to 2009, and by Pope Benedict XVI, as Apostolic Nuncio to the United States of America, from October 19, 2011 until end of May 2016.”

Viganò affirmed to CBS News that the affidavit was genuine. He also reasserted that his intention in coming forward was “to combat the grave situation in the church, to protect the church and also to stop future abuse.”

Vigano also accused the current archbishop of Washington, Cardinal Donald Wuerl of lying on at least two occasions regarding whether he knew about McCarrick’s activities, as well as protecting him.

Wuerl told CBS the McCarick affair has been concluded.

“He has resigned and his resignation has been accepted,” Wuerl said, according to CBS. “And he’s been told to stay in seclusion…that’s a pretty substantial penalty to be paying.”

Vigano’s explosive accusations are just the latest development of many in the church’s massive sexual abuse scandal.

A recently released Pennsylvania grand jury report, according to Reuters, found that that “301 priests in (Pennsylvania) had sexually abused minors over the past 70 years.”

Shortly thereafter, a priest in Indiana was violently attacked in what police believe may be an act of retribution “for all the kids.”  This was despite the fact that the priest had not ever been accused of such a crime.

And while the scandals have become all-too familiar to the Catholic faithful and the world at large, it has been the hope of many that enough in-house reform would occur to help minimize, if not fully eliminate, the abuses and cover-ups.

If Vigano’s testimony proves true, the church has a very long way still to go.

Saudi Arabia’s Sick Idea of Equal Rights: Woman Sentenced to Beheading

Every time I hear about an NFL player, or a far-left pundit, or a smug Hollywood elitist talk about how terrible, racist, sexist and homophobic America is, one question always comes to mind.

Have you seen the rest of the world?

Look, America’s not perfect. Anyone with at least two brain cells to rub together can recognize that. Economic issues and unsecured borders are all things that definitely can be improved in America.

But it is still the greatest country in the world, by a fairly large margin, when it comes to matters of race, sex and gender.

Last I checked, women and minority citizens are all allowed to drive, own property and vote in democratic elections.

Last I checked, members of the LGTBQ population may not be able to get the exact cake they want from private businesses, but they never need to worry about being killed indiscriminately by the government.

And last I checked, nobody on the far-left has to worry about unjust imprisonment every time they verbally attack Trump.

But yeah, America is such a terrible place that we need to kneel for the national anthem. Please.

You know what would be worth kneeling about? If America wanted to behead a woman for simply having the courage to speak out about injustice.

Do you think these women should be executed for speaking out?

That horrifying scenario is reportedly playing out in Saudi Arabia, according to NBC News citing human human rights activists.

In an unprecedented move, Saudi Arabian prosecutors are allegedly pushing to behead female activist Israa al-Ghomgham.

Ghomgham and four other activists are reportedly on trial and all face the death penalty.

Of note, none of the five have reportedly been charged for violent crimes.

The charges include incitement to protest, chanting slogans hostile to the regime, attempting to inflame public opinion, and providing moral support to rioters.

Wow. If those types of charges could be levied in America, every news broadcaster and protester or rally-goer would be facing an unfriendly fate.

So the next time people want to rail against America for being such a terrible and oppressive place, perhaps they should take a quick romp around the globe.

It wouldn’t be that hard to find a place much, much worse than America.

Multiple Antifa protesters arrested after clash with Philly police during Blue Lives Matter march

Sixteen Antifa protesters were arrested after clashing with officers during a Blue Lives Matter march in the Center City district of Philadephia, WPHT-TV reported.

Organizers of the left wing counterprotest recruited dozens of people to meet at city hall in opposition of the Blue Lives Matter March held by a popular group called Sports Beer & Politics II.

What were the charges?

About 75 Antifa protesters were in the area of Broad and Arch Streets by 11:30 a.m., WPHT reported. Several members of the so-called anti-fascist groups sparred with police as the protest began, according to the report. Nine people were given citations and seven were charged with disorderly conduct on Saturday.

“In spite of all the negative press towards police, we want to show our support of our men and women in blue,” Zachary Rehl, the Blue Lives Matter event organizer, said. Rehl is the son of deceased Philadelphia police officer Robert Rehl.

Blue Lives Matter organizers had called for a peaceful rally and publicly stated no violence was welcome.

What groups attended?

That didn’t stop members of the Philly Socialists, Liberation Project, Workers World Party Philadelphia, OccupyICEPHL, and many other Antifa groups showing up for the march, WPHT reported.

Members of those groups said they were marching to demand an end to police brutality, stop-and-frisk policies, and mass incarceration, the report stated.

They were heard shouting “No racist police” during the march. Police directed them out of traffic and worked to maintain order as dozens of people, some wearing masks and holding flags gathered along the streets of Center City, according to the TV station.

According to the report, the group Refuse Fascism arrived at the protest with a banner that read, “The Nightmare Must End: Trump/Pence Must Go!”

Several groups that were a part of the Antifa rally made social media posts asking for help with bail.

The opposing groups marched, but did not interact with each other, according to the report.

In top California sanctuary city, ICE agents take matters into their own hands to enforce the law

California lawmakers last year declared “sanctuary state” status for the entire state, adding to the dozens of cities that already had “sanctuary city” laws on the books.

However, that hasn’t stopped Immigration and Customs Enforcement from doing their job — even if that means arresting illegal immigrants in courtrooms.

What’s going on?

ICE agents entered Sacramento Superior Court earlier this month to arrest an immigrant, Yovanny Ontiveros-Cebreros, according to his lawyer, Charles Pacheco. The Sacremento Bee claimed the move could have a “chilling effect” across California.

Judge Lawrence Brown initially stepped in to prevent the arrest, Pacheco said. But after spending time in his judicial chambers, Brown allowed ICE agents to complete their job, telling Pacheco the agents had a warrant for his client’s arrest.

“The judge was weak — he had no control of his courtroom, and allowed the federal government to come into his court. He (Brown) just wanted to neutralize the situation, so he could figure out what was going on, and then he felt that it was justified that the (ICE) guy said there was a warrant for illegal re-entry,” Pacheco told the Bee, adding he never saw the warrant against his client.

However, Brown told the Bee that judges do not prevent law enforcement agencies from making lawful arrests.

“Remanding on an outstanding arrest warrant issued by another jurisdiction is the province of the Sheriff’s department. It happens on a regular basis, particularly in large felony arraignments courts. The court was mindful of the concerns raised by counsel about a chilling effect on undocumented persons coming to court – one articulated far more thoughtfully by the Chief Justice of California – but such concerns could not impede enforcing a lawfully-issued warrant at the moment,” he said.

A spokesman for ICE told the Bee that agents “made a criminal arrest at the Sacramento Superior Courthouse on Wednesday pursuant to a criminal arrest warrant issue by a federal magistrate judge.” He did not offer additional information.

Additionally, ICE agents have been making arrests in Fresno County courthouse for the last month, according to the Fresno Bee. Fresno County is south of Sacramento County.

Earlier this year Dirty Cop Rod Rosenstein made the decision to turn over the Michael Cohen case to attorneys in the Southern District of New York. Rosenstein did this to ensure that the witch hunt against President Trump continued if President Trump shut down the junk Mueller investigation.

Rosenstein signed the 4th FISA court request to spy on President Trump despite knowing the request was based on a the Fusion-GPS dossier, a Democrat-funded oppo research project that was NEVER fact-checked.

Trump appointed attorney Geoffrey Berman recused himself from the investigation into Michael Cohen.

Rod Rosenstein approved the early morning raid of Michael Cohen’s residence. Geoffrey Berman was not involved in the decision to raid Cohen’s residence.

Rosenstein approved Mueller’s referral to Geoffrey Berman on Monday, April 9th. Rosenstein ordered raids on Cohen’s residence the following day. It is not clear why or when Berman recused himself from the investigation.

Wired sources claims that Rosenstein ordered Berman to recuse himself.

The US attorney Trump appointed for that outpost, Geoffrey Berman, reportedly was ordered to recuse himself by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, leaving the office staffed mostly by holdovers from Preet Bharara’s tenure.

Bloomberg reported on the latest tactics to get Trump in the Southern District of New York.
Bloomberg reported:

Khuzami was put in charge of the Cohen investigation after the U.S. attorney who Trump appointed to lead the office, Geoffrey Berman, recused himself. It’s unclear why Berman did so, but he previously worked in the law firm of Greenberg Traurig LLP, which also employed Rudy Giuliani, a top Trump campaign supporter who’s now his personal lawyer.

Berman was appointed by Trump after the president fired prosecutor Preet Bharara in March 2017. Bharara, who was appointed by President Barack Obama and won fame for prosecuting insider-trading cases, has become a scathing critic of Trump on social media and a podcast…

…And while New York prosecutors are required to notify the Justice Department’s Public Integrity Section if they want to pursue election fraud cases, there haven’t been any signs of tension between the office and Justice Department headquarters with regard to the Cohen investigation, the person said.

Rosenstein made the decision to give the Cohen case to SDNY following a referral from Mueller. That also ensured the investigation could continue even if Trump somehow managed to fire the special counsel, a politically dangerous move that many Republicans have warned the president to avoid.
