Just in Time to Embarrass Trump, New York Times Reports North Korea’s a Dictatorship

Atrocities Under Kim Jong-un: Indoctrination, Prison Gulags, Executions” is a solid, depressing rundown of the totalitarian state in Monday’s New York Times. So what took the paper so long to acknowledge the brutality of the regime? The timing seems calculated to embarrass President Trump, in Singapore at a summit meeting with the North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un.

With the meeting of President Trump and Kim Jong-un of North Korea on Tuesday in Singapore, human rights groups are watching for Mr. Trump to bring up North Korea’s widespread crimes against humanity.

Mr. Kim rules with extreme brutality, making his nation among the worst human rights violators in the world.

In North Korea, these crimes “entail extermination, murder, enslavement, torture, imprisonment, rape, forced abortions and other sexual violence, persecution on political, religious, racial and gender grounds, the forcible transfer of populations, the enforced disappearance of persons and the inhumane act of knowingly causing prolonged starvation,” concluded a 2014 United Nations report that examined North Korea.

They described the gulags in graphic detail.

People accused of political crimes are arrested and sentenced to prison camps without trials, while their families are often kept in the dark about their whereabouts. Up to 120,000 inmates were in the country’s four major political prisons in 2014 and were subjected to gruesome conditions, according to the United Nations report.

Prisoners are starved, forced to work, tortured and raped. Reproductive rights are denied through forced abortions and infanticide. Some are executed — sometimes in public. Hundreds of thousands of political prisoners have died in the camps over the past 50 years, the United Nations report found.

….

Often the first human rights violations Westerners ascribe to North Korea, aside from preventing North Koreans from leaving the country, are the lengths it takes to indoctrinate its citizens.

The Times even mentioned the persecution of Christians, not exactly a running theme at the paper.

Christians are barred from practicing their religion, and those caught doing so are “subject to severe punishments,” the report found. North Korean leaders also conflate Christians with those detained in prison camps, those who try to flee and “others considered to introduce subversive influences,” the report stated.

The Times brought up the regimes use of starvation as a political tool:

Two million to three million people were believed to have died during an extended famine in North Korea in the 1990s, The New York Times reported in 1999, around when the country began to recover.

At the time, North Korea used food as a tool to enforce political loyalty, prioritizing its distribution based on who was most useful to the nation’s political system, the United Nations report stated.

It makes quite a change from the paper’s usual soft-pedaled treatment of the North Korean dictatorship. The paper’s coverage of the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChan, South Korea in February was particularly bad, too obsessed with showing up Vice President Mike Pence to talk about North Korean atrocities, under the headline “Kim Jong-un’s Sister Turns on the Charm, Taking Pence’s Spotlight.” The Times gushed about the dictator’s sister on the front page:

When the North Korean leader, Kim Jong-un, decided to send a large delegation to the Winter Olympics in South Korea this month, the world feared he might steal the show.

If that was indeed his intention, he could not have chosen a better emissary than the one he sent: his only sister, Kim Yo-jong, whom news outlets in the South instantly dubbed “North Korea’s Ivanka,” likening her influence to that of Ivanka Trump on her father, President Trump.

….

Flashing a sphinx-like smile and without ever speaking in public, Ms. Kim managed to outflank Mr. Trump’s envoy to the Olympics, Vice President Mike Pence, in the game of diplomatic image-making.

The Times has a long history of ignoring the dictatorial nature of the North Korea regime. A March 2013 dispatch described then-new dictator Kim Jong-un as merely “a young new leader,” while South Korea’s female president was described as the daughter of “a military strongman.”

WALSH: We Could Reclaim The Culture If We Had Even A Tiny Bit Of Courage

I’d like to call your attention to two stories that may seem unrelated.

First: the CrossFit executive who lost his job when he expressed on Twitter his (correct) opinion that it is a “sin” to celebrate gay pride. Russel Berger has not backed down or apologized for his beliefs, noting (correctly) that it is a matter of basic Christian orthodoxy, though he does now say that it was “imprudent” to vocalize his thoughts on a public platform. I’m not sure I agree with the latter. But, imprudent or not, the relevant point is that he took a courageous stand and has not retracted it.

Second: the two biological boys who were permitted to compete against, and handily defeat, girls at the state track and field championships in Connecticut. One of the young men, Terry Miller, set a record with a time that would have earned him 20th place if he’d run against the men. It turns out that Mr. Miller did compete against the men during the indoor track season. But suddenly, through some marvel of science, he decided in the last few months that he is actually a girl. Just in time to win a gold medal. You will notice that none of the biological boys who compete against girls in high school sports are ever good enough to beat their own gender. It always seems to be mediocre male athletes who become female athletes. We are supposed to believe that this is a coincidence, and not a clear sign that these guys are simply cheating.

Now, the thing that ties these two incidents together — aside from the leftist insanity on display — is moral courage. Specifically, the presence of it in the first case, and the utter lack of it in the second. Russel Berger clearly has courage. Meanwhile, up in Connecticut, it appears that few of the authorities involved — coaches, administration, track and field officials, parents — have even enough courage to fill a thimble halfway. Most of them are going along with the program, obediently and without protest.

The executive director of the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference said that it “doesn’t feel good” to see girls get robbed of their chance to compete in a fair race. But, she insists, this is a question of “civil rights.” “You cannot discriminate,” she said.

One of the coaches at the meet, Gary Moore, complained that the situation isn’t fair to the girls, but he still conceded that the boys should be able to compete. He just wishes there was some way to “level the playing field.” There is, of course, a very obvious way to level the playing field. You could kick the boys off of the playing field and tell them to play on their own field. But Moore, afraid of the names he would be called, would not go so far as to make that obvious suggestion.

The local media has joined in the conspiracy of cowardice. Jeff Jacobs, writing for the Connecticut Post, expressed sympathy for the girls, but he said the situation is “difficult and complex” (no, it isn’t). He declared, solemnly, that denying a biological boy the opportunity to race against females would “lower the standards of humanity.” (Uh, what?)

Then there are the parents of the girls. Many of them have remained silent. They could put an end to this lunacy by banding together and pulling their daughters from the sport until sanity and fairness is restored. Instead, they allow their daughters to participate in what has become nothing more than a charade; a kind of masquerade designed to satisfy the delusions of a couple of boys who don’t belong there.

If every parent who silently disagrees with allowing boys to steal medals from their daughters, and every coach who feels privately disgusted by the whole thing, and every school official who harbors serious reservation in their minds, would all just speak up, and, beyond speaking up, categorically refuse to participate in or facilitate any competition that involves boys, then the problem would be solved. But too many of them are afraid. Too many are cowards. And the smallest minority, pushing the craziest ideology, prevails as a result.

This is a microcosm of our culture. It’s claimed that there is a silent majority who oppose and despise radical leftism. I believe this majority probably exists. And their status as a majority just makes their cowardice all the more shameful. We have allowed the relativists and hedonists to run roughshod over our civilization, dictate terms, get their way, even to the point of intruding into our daughters’ bathrooms and sports teams. We shake our heads, furrow our brows, mutter quietly to each other, as we march to beat of their drums.

How many schools have instituted these insane “transgender” policies while a majority of parents and teachers oppose it yet do nothing and say nothing to stop it? How many communities have played host to the sinful spectacle of a “gay pride parade” while the majority of the residents are disgusted by it but say nothing and do nothing to protest it? How many people feel quite upset about the holocaust of the unborn yet refuse to say anything or do anything in opposition to it? And on and on. I’m afraid that most of us are exactly like the parents, coaches, and officials who stood off on the sidelines politely clapping while a couple of dudes cheated and humiliated their daughters.

And then, on the other end of the spectrum, you have Russel Berger. He was willing to give up his job for his beliefs. He preferred to lose his income rather than sit by silently and obediently while sin and depravity were celebrated in the streets. That took courage. It would have taken much less courage — really, just a tiny speck of it — for all parties involved to resist the demands of the two “transgender” boys in Connecticut. But even a speck of courage is too much to expect these days.

Imagine if we all had that — just a speck, a speck of courage. What a wonderful difference it would make.

Political Scientist: These ‘Dirty’ Tricks Will Make Sure Democrats Win Presidency Going Forward

Political scientist David Faris says it’s time for the Democrats to realize that they’re facing their own “Flight 93” situation and must embrace far more radical political moves than they have so far been willing to take in order to ensure that they control the presidency and Congress going forward.

In an interview with Vox’s Sean Illing, Faris spelled out his urgently recommended political steps, which he underscored were “not as crazy” as they may initially sound, among them splitting up California into separate states and granting statehood to Puerto Rico and D.C.

“I don’t think the architects of the Constitution understood that population dynamics would create a state like California with 38 million people, and then a bunch of states like the Dakotas and Wyoming and Vermont and Delaware that have very small populations,” said Faris. “The end result is that voters in California and New York and Texas are systematically disadvantaged in national policy relative to their counterparts in smaller, rural states. It’s absurd that California and Delaware should have the same number of senators.”

To address this “not fair or democratic” situation, he said, it’s time to get radical and split up California, which, he insisted, wasn’t really so hard to do. “Technically, from a constitutional standpoint, all it would require is an act of the California state legislature, signed by the governor of California, and then accepted by Congress,” he said.

So here’s what we need to happen: A referendum on breaking the state up into smaller states passes, and then it’s validated by the state legislature and then the governor, who would obviously need to be a Democrat, signs it, and finally, a Democrat-controlled Congress makes it official.

This is not as crazy an idea as people think. There have been several attempts to do it in California already, and you can make a pretty strong argument that the state is far too large to be ruled from Sacramento.

And if Californians managed to pull it off, we’d likely have another 12 Democratic senators in Washington, or at least more than we have now. More Electoral College votes too.

Faris clearly assumes that all of the seven downsized formerly-California states would be filled with Leftists, despite large sections of the state having strong Republican numbers.

Another “dirty” Republican-thwarting move would be to push for statehood for both D.C. and Puerto Rico. “Both states have held referenda that endorsed statehood,” he said. “We should grant people the representation they want and deserve, and it just happens that doing so would almost certainly send four more Democrats into the Senate, and probably an all-Democratic congressional delegation from Puerto Rico too.”

In addition, when they get a chance, the Democrats should pack the Supreme Court with additional activist judges, he said, noting that it’s “not unprecedented” to have more than nine justices.

Faris urged Democrats to heed his calls for more extreme political action because we’ve reached a “very dangerous moment” in American history. “There’s been a massive erosion of trust in public institutions and in the broader electoral process,” he said. “The Trump administration has been disastrously disruptive to the norms of our political culture.”

Watch: President Donald Trump Showed This Video Of North Korea’s ‘Two Futures’ During Summit

This is actually very clever. And it shows he understands that Kim loves movies. Here are your two choices – you can continue on the path to getting bombed – or – open up the country and this is what it can be and that’s better for you as well. It’s a warning, but it also shows the promise of the wiser choice.

Via Daily Wire:

In his meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, President Donald Trump showed a video depicting two possible futures for North Korea — a shocking film showing both the United States military firing weapons at an increasingly isolated North Korean shore, or unqualified success, economic prosperity, and fame on the world stage.

The four-minute video first shows pictures of North Korean destitution, and shots of what appears to be the DMZ, and video of North Korean military exercises, undertaken in near-complete silence from the rest of the world. Eventually, after suggesting that Kim has the opportunity to change the future, the video shows the desolation of nuclear war, followed by video of the “other” possibility: technological advancement.

FCC Chair Says His Family Is Still Being Threatened Over Net Neutrality Repeal

Venezuela has net neutrality.

Via The Hill:

Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Ajit Pai told The Wall Street Journal on Monday that he and his family are still being threatened in the months since the agency voted to roll back Obama-era net neutrality rules.

Pai visited the newspaper’s offices on Monday, the day the repeal went into effect, and said he has continued to receive threats following the December vote. His wife and in-laws have also received threatening phone calls and messages at home and at work, according to Journal opinion writer James Freeman.

Freeman wrote that Pai’s family “still requires 24-hour security” as a result.

The repeal of the 2015 net neutrality rules went into effect this week.

The FCC in December voted 3-2 along party lines to roll back the regulations and shift authority for policing the broadband industry to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).

At an FCC hearing shortly before the vote, security evacuated the room due to a bomb threat.

“HE IS AN ABSOLUTE DISGRACE!” Trump 2020 Campaign Chair Brad Parscale Calls For Jim Acosta’s Press Credentials to be Immediately Suspended

“HE IS AN ABSOLUTE DISGRACE!” Trump 2020 Campaign Chair Brad Parscale Calls For Jim Acosta’s Press Credentials to be Immediately Suspended

President Trump arrived in Singapore over the weekend for a historical, high stakes meeting with North Korea’s Kim Jong Un in an effort to negotiate the de-nuclearization of the Korean peninsula.

President Trump made history on Tuesday. The US president somehow brought the tyrant of North Korea to the table to sign the most important nuclear agreement in the last 70 years for the Korean people.

Months of hard work and diplomacy reached a climax on Tuesday. The moment will go down in history. Then CNN’s Jim Acosta, the darling of the disruptive left, started blurting out questions at the president whenever the two leaders came into view.

At one point Trump and Kim Jong Un paused on the balcony during their talks.
Jim Acosta started blurting out questions whenever the two leaders came stepped out of their meetings — then Acosta was caught in a hot mic moment.

Jim Acosta: Mr President, how is the meeting going so far, sir?… Any progress, Mr. President?… Mr. President, how’s it going so far, sir? What do you think?

President Trump (from balcony with Kim Jong Un): Very, very good.

Jim Acosta: Mr. Kim will you give up your nuclear weapons, sir?

Jim Acosta: (After President Trump and Kim Jong Un exit the balcony) Hey, if they’re not going to let me in the fucking meeting, then that’s what happens.”

President Trump’s 2020 Campaign Manager Brad Parscale slammed Jim Acosta Tuesday morning calling for his press credentials to be immediately suspended after his latest disgraceful stunt.

Parscale tweeted: Jim @Acosta should immediately have his press credentials suspended. He is an absolute disgrace! @realDonaldTrump

Ajit Pai: FCC’s ‘Restoring Internet Freedom Order’ Will Make Web Free and Open

Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Ajit Pai claimed on Sunday that his agency’s Restoring Internet Freedom Order would make the Internet free, open, and fast following the repeal of net neutrality.

“I support a free and open internet. The internet should be an open platform where you are free to go where you want, and say and do what you want, without having to ask anyone’s permission. And under the Federal Communications Commission’s Restoring Internet Freedom Order, which takes effect Monday, the internet will be just such an open platform,” declared Pai in an article. “Our framework will protect consumers and promote better, faster internet access and more competition.”

Pai added that he has empowered the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to police internet service providers “for anticompetitive acts and unfair or deceptive practices,” and that under the FCC’s Restoring Internet Freedom Order, “internet service providers must make public more information about their network management practices.”

“They are required to make this information available either on their own website or on the FCC’s website. This information will allow consumers to make an informed decision about which internet service provider is best for them and give entrepreneurs the information they need as they develop new products and services,” Pai explained. “Our transparency rule will also help ensure that any problematic conduct by internet service providers is quickly identified and corrected.”

Pai concluded by claiming that the order “will both protect the free and open internet and deliver more digital opportunity to more Americans,” delivering “better, faster, cheaper internet access for American consumers who are in control of their own online experience.”

Facebook Avoids Answering Dozens of Follow-Up Questions from Senate

Facebook finally responded to follow-up questions from senators following Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s hearing in front of Congress in April, however, the company opted to avoid answering dozens of questions.

Despite Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) formally requesting in his questions for Facebook to “provide a wholly contained answer to each question,” which “should not cross-reference answers provided in other questions,” Facebook disregarded this request and avoided questions, including simple “yes or no” questions, by deferring Cruz to other generic answers at least 69 times.

Instead of answering each question, as requested, many questions were answered with, “See response to question [X],” while in others, they claimed not to “maintain statistics on these data points.”

Facebook refused to directly answer Cruz’s questions whether Charles Murray’s The Bell Curve, the Bible, criticism of Islam, and anti-immigration opinions constitute as “hate speech” on the platform.

Facebook did, however, reveal the various pieces of user information which they track, including mouse movements, file names, photos, text messages, and other apps and games you use.

During Mark Zuckerberg’s hearing before the Senate Judiciary and Commerce Committees in April, the Facebook CEO replied, “I’ll have my team get back to you,” or some other variation of the same answer at least 21 times.

Zuckerberg also declined to share Facebook’s definition of “hate speech,” and dodged a number of questions.

Seattle’s city council surrenders, will repeal head tax it passed last month

That was fast. The Seattle City Council voted to approve a $275 per employee per year head tax on May 14th. Yesterday, less than a month later, Mayor Jenny Durkan and seven members of the city council (out of nine) put out a statement saying they had reconsidered and would repeal the tax.

“It is clear that the ordinance will lead to a prolonged, expensive political fight over the next five months that will do nothing to tackle our urgent housing and homelessness crisis,” the statement said. “We heard you. This week, the City Council is moving forward with the consideration of legislation to repeal the current tax on large businesses to address the homelessness crisis.”

The head tax passed last month was a compromise. Kshama Sawant, the socialist council member who led the charge for the tax, was pushing for $500 per head. Mayor Durkan felt that was too much so she and the council settled on $275 per head, still higher than any head tax in the country.

There were probably two things that turned this around in the past month. First, there was a private poll published last week which revealed that while 88% of Seattle respondents believed homelessness was a very serious problem, 83% were unhappy with how the city council was handling it. Specifically, they were getting tired of all the taxes. And that poll was taken before the head tax was passed.

The other thing was the campaign to repeal to the head tax by placing it on the ballot in November. The final nail in the head tax’s coffin came yesterday when organizers for the “No Tax On Jobs” campaign announced they had secured more signatures than necessary. From KIRO 7:

After weeks of controversy and passionate volunteers on both sides trying to convince you to sign or not sign the petition, the “No Tax On Jobs” campaign says it’s collected “well more than” 20,000 signatures, and celebrated at The Shelter Lounge in Ballard on Sunday…

People against the head tax needed about 17,600 signatures to get the option to repeal the tax on the ballot. Now, people who support the tax say they’ll be taking the fight to the polls.

“Quite frankly, it’s atrocious what’s happening around the city,” said Erika Nagy, who is part of the “No Tax On Jobs” campaign.

So the tax was going on the ballot and there was every indication it was going to lose. The Mayor and most of the city council decided it was better to kill it now rather than risk making city residents more upset by delaying the inevitable. The decision to repeal is probably the smartest move the council has made in several weeks.

But it’s still an embarrassing reversal especially for socialist Kshama Sawant, who called this a “backroom betrayal” last night:

Naturally, she’s claiming big business “lies” are responsible but, as mentioned above, Seattle residents were unhappy with the city council’s spending habits months before the ballot campaign began:

Sawant also told Washington Post, “I have a news flash for council members who capitulated to this in lightning speed: This was never going to be easy in the face of mass corporate misinformation. She added, “It’s a complete betrayal of working people.” And yes, she’s still crowing about the $15 minimum wage hike. That will be great for the few people who still have jobs after those higher labor costs drive employers to make self-order kiosks the norm.

There’s no telling what Sawant or the city council will do next, but for the moment it looks like common sense has prevailed in Seattle.

Outrage After England’s Prince George, Age 4, Plays With One Specific Item

On Sunday, England’s Princess Kate, accompanied by her four-year-old son George and her three-year-old daughter Charlotte, was photographed with her children playing in the sun at the Beaufort Polo Club in Tetbury, Gloucestershire, while the children’s father, Prince William, was playing in the Maserati Royal Charity Polo Trophy. That would seem innocent enough, but photographs of young Prince George elicited outrage for one reason: he was playing with a toy gun.

Other photographs showed young George playing with a knife and handcuffs; all part of his fascination with police. Last November, George’s father William got a request list from George for Christmas that had only one item listed: a toy police car.

Later, in March, at a reception honoring the Metropolitan Police, an officer joked that George could join the police cadets; William reportedly replied, “Well, he does like the police at the moment.”

In opposition to George’s penchant for police paraphernalia, here are some sample comments from Twitter: “Sad to see George playing with a gun when the whole country has a gun/knife crime situation.” “Thought he was a sensitive child. Better if he was seen playing with a toy car or football. Sadly the royals will never change.”

He’s four years old.
