‘Significant errors’ in FBI counting of ‘inaccessible’ mobile devices

The FBI has admitted that it ‘over-counted’ the number of mobile devices connected to criminal investigations that it said were not accessible because of encrypted data.

Endgadget:

For the last two years, the FBI has repeatedly claimed that thousands of phones linked to criminal investigations were inaccessible due to locks and encryption. Last year FBI Director Christopher Wray said it had failed to access 7,800 mobile devices, but tonight a Washington Post report reveals that number is incorrect. According to the Post, the accurate number is between 1,000 and 2,000, with a recent internal estimate putting at about 1,200 devices, and in a statement, the FBI responded: “The FBI’s initial assessment is that programming errors resulted in significant over-counting of mobile devices reported.”

The official excuse is that errors caused by multiple databases resulted in devices being counted more than once, but the issue has been an FBI and DOJ pursuit of backdoor access to locked phones. Then-director James Comey cited the inflated figure during a debate over the San Bernardino shooters’ locked iPhone, and it has come up again in relation to similar incidents. Without being provided any backdoor by Apple, law enforcement gained access to that device anyway, and as we’ve recently learned, there are tools it can use for newer phones.

In effect, what the FBI described as a big problem in recovering data from mobile devices belonging to criminals is hardly a problem at all. The pressure law enforcement was putting on cell phone makers and other technology companies to give them the keys to open any cell phone was apparently a ruse.

The government has repeatedly referred to “Going Dark” as a major problem it faces in investigations, suggesting tech companies are enabling criminals by strengthening privacy protections that they can’t get around. But privacy advocates have long thought the agency was pumping up its numbers, and now it’s case has taken a significant hit.

There will always be tension between the right to privacy and the ability of law enforcement agencies to protect us. This is inevitable given our fundamental rights and the real world needs of police.

But when a federal agency basically lies about a problem in order to force companies to give them a workaround, this is unacceptable.

For the FBI, it’s just one more indication of how its credibility is now in tatters as a result of its overreach on any number of issues, not the least of which is the Russian collusion investigation.

Donald Trump Mocks Deep State ‘Spygate’ — ‘What Goes Around, Comes Around!’

President Donald J. Trump ridiculed the purveyors of the ongoing Russian investigation Wednesday, mocking them on Twitter for getting “caught” in a scandal.

“Look how things have turned around on the Criminal Deep State,” he wrote on Twitter. “They go after Phony Collusion with Russia, a made up Scam, and end up getting caught in a major SPY scandal the likes of which this country may never have seen before! What goes around, comes around!”

Trump quoted Judge Andrew Napolitano of Fox News who said that it was “clear” that the FBI had “eyes and ears all over the Trump campaign.”

The president put pressure on intelligence agencies who suddenly had to explain their actions with his campaign during the presidential election.

“SPYGATE could be one of the biggest political scandals in history!” he wrote.

Trump argued that FBI informant Stefan Halper, who met with members of his campaign, was a spy because of the payments he received from the government.

“If the person placed very early into my campaign wasn’t a SPY put there by the previous Administration for political purposes, how come such a seemingly massive amount of money was paid for services rendered – many times higher than normal,” he asked on Tuesday night. “Follow the money! The spy was there early in the campaign and yet never reported Collusion with Russia, because there was no Collusion.”

Halper received a total of $1,058,161 from the Department of Defense through the Office of Net Assessment between 2012 and 2018, including payments during the presidential election in 2016.
Trump suggested that Deep State intelligence agents used Halper to spy on his campaign, accusing them of doing the same thing to Senator Bernie Sanders’ presidential campaign.

“He was only there to spy for political reasons and to help Crooked Hillary win – just like they did to Bernie Sanders, who got duped!” he concluded.

Numbers Don’t Lie, Billboard: Entertainers Politick, Award Shows Tank

Hate to say we told ya so … no, actually it’s kind of fun to say we told you so. According to Variety, the May 20 Billboard Music Awards earned a “2.4 rating in adults 18-49.” It suffered “a decrease of approximately 8% in the demo and 9% in total viewers compared to the 2017 ceremony.” And the 2017 Awards show was it’s a new low.

How can this be? Pop music is no worse than it’s ever been. There were performances by pop royalty. Technology is fostering ever slicker show productions.

It may be a head-scratcher to Billboard and Variety, but not to Newsbusters. We reported in March on the results of a McLaughlin & Associates/Media Research Center national poll of likely 1,000 voters on the intrusion of politics into entertainment. A quick rundown of key results:

75% agree with the statement, “When I watch live sports or entertainment shows on television I am trying to get away from politics and do not want to be bombarded with partisan political messages.”

44% said they have been less likely to watch live sports and entertainment shows because they have become too political.

Among people who didn’t watch the Oscars this year, the top reason cited for not watching was that they were “tired of these shows being full of political statements.

About half (47%) of the respondents who did NOT watch the Oscars this year said their reason for not watching the show was EITHER “I’m tired of these shows being full of political statements” or “I would have watched but knew some of the presenters and winners would use the time to share their political agenda.”

So it’s a pretty good chance Billboard’s numbers were down again because people know they’re going to be bombarded with celebrity political opinion. And sure enough, gun control took center stage for part of Sunday’s ceremony. There was also someone named Luis Fonsi who, in accepting an award said, “This one goes out to all my Latino brothers. All my immigrants,” he said. “All my dreamers.”

Admittedly, that’s pretty tame stuff compared the Streep Screeching, Oprahfying and inclusiveness clausing of other events. But people decide to watch — or not — in advance. Given the choice between sitting through pop tarts lecturing about immigration policy and a good book, the numbers say the book wins.

Trump And The Woman Who Hates Him The Most Come To The Defense Of Tomi Lahren

In a moment the folks over at Twitchy dubbed “Peak 2018,” the heinous treatment of Tomi Lahren by customers at a Minneapolis restaurant briefly united two mortal enemies in a moment of unlikely solidarity: President Donald Trump and the woman who once infamously held his severed head in her hand, Kathy Griffin.

As the Daily Wire’s Amanda Prestigiacomo reported Tuesday, while having brunch at a Minneapolis restaurant with her parents over the weekend, Lahren was verbally and physically attacked by classless patrons, who pelted her with insults, including “racist,” “b****” and “c***.” One of them even threw a drink at her.

“F*** that b****. F*** this h**. Racist ass b****. Why you even out here? Get this b**** out of here. F*** that b****,” one man yelled at her, his friends cheering him on.

Multiple videos of the ugly incident were posted online and celebrated by followers. “Whoever the guy is that cussed her out, I hope you’re having an amazing day,” one woman captioned one of the videos. “Whoever threw this drink at Tomi Lahren, thank you,” she wrote under another video.

In response, many have came to Lahren’s defense, including President Trump:

So did the woman who has focused her act almost entirely around her hatred of Trump:

While the initial viral posts of the despicable treatment of Lahren have been blocked, here’s some footage of the incident that remains:

After videos of the incident went viral, Lahren appeared on Fox News to discuss it. “At the end of the day, I’m a person too, and I do get humiliated and embarrassed, just like anyone else,” she told “Fox & Friends” Wednesday morning. “But I’m tough; my family’s tough. We can handle it.” Looking back, the people who are really going to be embarrassed by their actions, she said, are the ones who shamelessly attacked her. Video below via Fox News Insider:

PERSECUTION: Four Churches Attacked In Nepal By Extremists

The Christian community in Nepal was rocked earlier this month when three churches were burned down and another was bombed. Though no one was injured, the property damage was catastrophic for all four congregations.

Morning Star News reports:

The Hebron Church building in the eastern hilly region was set on fire on May 9, Emmanuel Church’s building in western Nepal’s Doti District was burned on May 10, and the Kanchanpur Emmanuel Church building in the midwest hilly region was set ablaze on May 11. Before midnight on May 12, the Mahima Church building in Dhangadhi, in western Nepal, was bombed.

Thousands of dollars of equipment, furniture, windows, and infrastructure were damaged.

Pastor Dhirendra Rana, senior pastor of Kanchanpur Emmanuel Church said in an interview, “The miscreants broke the lock of the church and formed a heap of all the stuff present in the building, including the records of the church, 300 kilograms of grain and electric appliances, and they set everything ablaze.”

The local police released tepid statements stating that the Biplab Group, a communist political party in Nepal, is under suspicion. The Christian community, however, is suspicious that a group of extremist Hindus are behind it. They cite recent social media posts with the hashtag “Esai Karan ke Virudh Hindu Jagaran Abhiyaan,” translated as “Hindu Awakening Against Conversion” as evidence.

The communities affected by the attacks have expressed disapproval at the slow speed of the investigation. Though authorities have met with and taken statements from the church leadership and congregants, the investigation is seemingly stalled. No suspects have been identified and no arrests have been made.

Chair of the Religious Liberty Forum Nepal Tanka Subedi is convinced that the government has been slow-walking the investigation.

“They have not made any arrests yet, as it seems that they have been clearly notified to not carry out arrests in these cases,” he told Morning Star News.

Will The International Agency For Research On Cancer Clean Up Its Act?

The France-based International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), a semi-autonomous offshoot of the World Health Organization, is expected to appoint its new director on May 17th for a five-year term. The new appointee will take over a number of challenges from outgoing director, Chris Wild, who has led the agency through a difficult period that has seen the organization backtrack on several of its assessments, and dragged before a U.S. Congressional committee to answer for its “shoddy work” on others.

With Congress threating to pull funding due to a “record of controversy, retractions, and inconsistencies” the agency’s credibility is standing in the balance. What is particularly troubling, however, is that the IARC’s assessments continues to be highly influential, with real and often significant consequences for both businesses and policymakers.

Take for example, Johnson & Johnson, a mega corporation currently facing more than 6,000 lawsuits from women claiming that the company’s widely used Baby Powder caused their ovarian cancer, but only after IARC classified talc as carcinogenic to humans. The lawyers attacking Johnson & Johnson are not only hoping for a big payout (with one woman being awarded a staggering $417 million in damages) but they’re also pushing for talc powder to carry warning labels asserting that the substance is carcinogenic.

This kind of warning label has oversaturated California for years, leading commentators to scoff that in the Golden State, “everything causes cancer.” IARC determining that a chemical might “possibly [be] carcinogenic to humans” is enough to land the substance on California’s infamous Proposition 65 list. The substances in Prop 65’s catalog are slapped with an intimidating warning label reading, “WARNING: This product contains a chemical known to the State of California to cause cancer.” This in turn causes each substance to become fodder for an extensive network of bounty hunters that have sprung up to fleece businesses for not complying with Prop 65’s stringent requirements.

Since IARC’s assessments hold such influence, their scientific rigor should be beyond reproach—and yet nothing is further from the truth. IARC’s determination in 2015 that the popular herbicide glyphosate was a “probable carcinogen” immediately raised eyebrows, particularly because IARC’s conclusion deviated sharply from all other institutions which had evaluated the chemical and found that it was unlikely to cause cancer.

Concerns about IARC’s classification of glyphosate increased dramatically. However, Reuters published two exposés indicating that IARC left out a critical study of their assessment and that the agency had even edited out scientific evidence that disagreed with its desired conclusion.

The glyphosate saga is likely only the tip of the iceberg of IARC’s dubious science, as some of its other assessments have recently come under scrutiny. In February 2018, it became public that the IARC had omitted essential findings in its review of benzene, drastically underestimating the average human exposure to the dangerous chemical. What was more troubling than IARC’s scientific errors in its benzene assessment was the agency’s attitude when Melvyn Kopstein, the chemical engineer who discovered the mistakes, pointed them out. IARC staff admitted that the agency’s evaluation was “limited” and had “tried to cover too much.” They nevertheless stated unequivocally that they had no plans to correct their assessment. Kopstein was left stunned and troubled by the agency’s apathetic response to the serious concerns he had raised to many of the senior IARC officials, including Director Chris Wild.

The passing of the baton to a new director is a valuable opportunity for IARC to revisit its policies and methods, and shake off the cloud of doubt which now overshadows the organization. Unfortunately, some of the candidates reported to be on the short-list have had their own share of controversy.

Chris Portier, for example, has drawn flak for advising the IARC’s glyphosate review panel without disclosing the fact that he was involved with the anti-pesticide Environmental Defense Fund while collecting $160,000 from law firms suing the glyphosate manufacturers. These potential conflicts of interest were highlighted by the Congressional Committee on Science, Space, and Technology in a November 2017 article on Chris Wild, where Portier’s scientific testimony in a court case was described as “shaky” by federal judge Vince Chhabria.

Another rumored candidate for the new IARC director, Joachim Schüz, has headed the group’s section on Environment and Radiation since 2010. He has been accused of drastically underestimating the human health risks presented by mobile phones and systematically suppressing data he disagreed with. Schüz also allegedly accepted funding from major telecommunications companies, raising concerns about a potential conflict of interest.

That Portier and Schüz are supposedly in contention to head IARC is a worrying sign that the organization’s new director won’t usher in a fresh era of credibility and scientific accuracy, but rather will continue the same patterns which have landed the agency in Congress’ crosshairs.

Labour Allows Bearded Man to Stand For Woman-Only Role Because He ‘Identifies’ as Female Once a Week

A middle-aged man with a beard has been accepted to stand for a woman-only position in a local Labour Party branch because he “identifies” as female for a few hours a day once a week.

The Basingstoke Labour Party accepted David Lewis, 45, as an official candidate for their “women’s officer” role, where he will be responsible for representing women’s issues and recruiting more females.

“I self-identify as a woman on Wednesdays, between 6.50 am when my alarm goes off and around midnight when I go to bed,” Mr. Lewis told the Spectator, explaining that he does not change his pronouns, clothes, appearance, or behaviour.

The Labour Party frequently discriminates and uses all-women positions and shortlists, and recently all-ethnic minority lists, to encourage “diversity” in their ranks.

However, earlier this year, they fully embraced transgender ideology allowing anyone to “self-identify” as a woman and apply for these positions.

Some feminists are opposed, claiming biological women will be disadvantaged and men may take advantage of the rules. They have tried to bring a legal challenge against the party, insisting men legally change gender before standing for female roles.

Mr. Lewis said he stood as a candidate to “inform the [Constituency Labour Party], and maybe some other people, about what this policy means, about what happens when you say that someone’s gender depends only on what they say and nothing else”.

Mocking the policy, he continued: “I’d say those people don’t have any right to criticise my gender-identity. If I say I am a woman on Wednesdays, then all they can do is accept that. After all, there are other people who only identify as women on some days of the week and not others, and they are accepted, not criticised.”

Adding: “Anyone else’s criticism or questions about my gender identity are just not relevant to the Labour Party at the moment, given the current policy. If I say I’m a woman, I’m a woman.”

He does not, however, expect to win, explaining: “I am hoping that my local party will be sensible.”

Mr. Lewis’s stunt comes as the government considers the recommendations of Parliament’s Women and Equalities committee which demanded legal “self-identification” to be the norm in all areas of British life.

The committee, led by Tory MP Maria Miller, said anyone should be able to be “quickly” declared a woman, with no checks or assessment, and access all-female services including changing rooms and rape crisis clinics.

“We need to be able to debate this, we need to be able to talk about this without being told we are transphobic and to shut up,” Mr. Lewis says, explaining his motivation.

Unions Give $1.3 Billion in Member Dues to Left-Wing Groups

A new study reveals that from 2010 to 2017, labor unions sent some $1.3 billion in member dues to progressive groups aligned with the Democratic Party without obtaining the approval of their members.

According to the Center for Union Facts (CUF) groups that received union member dues include the Clinton Foundation, Planned Parenthood, Center for American Progress, Democracy Alliance, and the Democratic Governors Association.

The data indicate that America Votes received $15.1 million from union member dues, while the Democratic Governors Association was the recipient of $14.5 million. Abortion vendor Planned Parenthood received nearly $1.2 million from union members through their union dues.

As the Washington Post reported following the 2016 presidential election, some 40 percent of union household members vote Republican, and likely would not approve of their union dues being donated by union leadership to left-wing groups.

CUF observes that, under current federal law, union officials are permitted to spend their members’ dues money on political advocacy without their “opt-in” consent.

In addition:

The Employee Rights Act (ERA), which is now co-sponsored by more than 180 senators and House members, would protect employees’ paychecks by requiring union leadership to obtain prior approval before spending member dues on political advocacy. Roughly 80 percent of Americans—including those in union households—support paycheck protection and other ERA reforms.

“For years, labor unions have hijacked member dues to fund Planned Parenthood, Emily’s List, and other pro-abortion groups,” said Luka Ladan, communications director for the Center for Union Facts, as reported by the Daily Caller News Foundation. “Yet many union members oppose the abortion lobby. The Employee Rights Act would require union officials to obtain permission before spending dues dollars on left-wing political advocacy.”

The entire list of groups that receive donations of union members’ dues can be viewed here.

MD Governor race: Even Democrats admit Democrats are the problem

Governor Larry Hogan is up for reelection this year in Maryland and there’s a crowded field of Democratic hopefuls looking to replace him. There are nine challengers on the ballot and eight of them showed up for the first televised debate of the primary this weekend. They all took shots at Governor Hogan, but in typical fashion, they quickly broke down and began going after each other. The biggest subjects were taxes and Baltimore’s staggering crime rates. (Baltimore Sun)

The Democrats largely agree that Maryland needs to spend more on education and mass transit, and to put fewer people in jail. But the on-air forum also let them demonstrate the different personalities and experience they would bring to the job.

They attacked the governor for canceling Baltimore’s Red Line, for not investing more in education, for not engaging enough to help the city deal with its third consecutive year of more than 300 murders, and for the state’s business climate.

The Maryland Republican Party preemptively hit back in Hogan’s defense, releasing a video spoof calling the Democratic field “uninspiring” and warning the debates “should come with a viewer warning message; ‘Be advised prolonged exposure will result in extreme boredom and likely deep sleep.’ ”

The crime discussion quickly devolved into two camps, with some candidates calling for a return to former Governor Martin O’Malley’s tough-on-crime policies and the rest saying “we’re locking too many people up.” But the real entertainment came on the subject of taxes. Maryland is already one of the highest taxed states in the nation, but one candidate, former NAACP chief Ben Jealous, said that he would “tax the 1% more.” Another, Baltimore lawyer Jim Shea, said he didn’t want to raise taxes but was willing to promise not to lower them either.

The star of the evening from my vantage point was Krish Vignarajah, who just happens to be a former advisor to Michelle Obama. Unlike the rest of the people on the stage, Vignarajah was the only one admitting that Maryland was bleeding successful businesses and individuals because of the high tax rates. Reporter Erin Cox, covering the event for the Sun, captured the key quotes on Twitter.

“We are a high tax state, and people are leaving. We end up paying for our problems rather than investing .. in solutions.”

The problem with talking about high taxes being the reason that businesses and residents flee the state is that it’s the Democrats who have been raising those taxes for years. And their cheering section really doesn’t want to hear about how they are the cause of many of the problems that the candidates are promising to solve.

Here’s the video of the debate. Vignarajah first comes in around the 9:45 mark if you want to skip ahead.

Unfortunately for both Vignarajah and all the people of Maryland, talking about locking up more gang members who commit gun crimes and lowering taxes to try to bring more business back to the state is probably an immediate ticket out of the primary race for Democrats. They want to hear about fewer people in jail and raising taxes on the rich. Of course, the eventual winner of the primary (probably from the higher taxes and less jail time camp) is going to have one other significant problem facing them. Republican Governor Larry Hogan’s approval rating is currently at 69%, a number only dreamed of by most politicians. Good luck trying to boot him out.

Democrat Candidate for Reparations to Blacks and Free College for All Wins Georgia Primary for Governor

Democrat Candidate for Reparations to Blacks and Free College for All Wins Georgia Primary for Governor

Georgia Democrat Stacey Abrams became the first black female candidate to win a major party primary for governor on Tuesday.

Of course, the liberal media is gaga for Democrat Abrams.

But they won’t tell you this…
Stacey Abrams was the guest of honor at the Democrat “Way to Win: 2022 Victory Party” at the party’s annual spring conference.
Abrams and fellow Democrats want reparations for blacks and free college for all kids.

It’s the socialist dream.

They want to turn America into Venezuela.

The Washington Free Beacon reported:

A wealthy Democratic donor club plotting the future of the liberal movement hopes to be fighting for reparations by 2022, according to a document obtained by the Washington Free Beacon from the Democracy Alliance’s spring conference this week in Atlanta.

The desire was stated in the invitation for a Monday reception during the annual spring gathering, which was attended by top Democratic Party officials such as DNC chairman Tom Perez, former Virginia governor Terry McAuliffe, and Reps. Raul Grijalva (Ariz.) and Mark Pocan (Wis.).

The reception, “Way to Win: 2022 Victory Party,” was presented as a look forward at what’s possible if Democrats can be effective in coming elections.

“It’s 2022 and we are celebrating policy victories across the nation: Medicare for All and Free College, and next on the agenda is Reparations,” the group projected, according to an invitation to the event.
