FCC Officially Repeals Obama-Era Net Neutrality Order

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) officially repealed the agency’s Obama-era 2015 net neutrality order on Monday.

In December, the FCC passed the “Restoring Internet Freedom Order,” which repealed the agency’s Obama-era net neutrality regulation. The FCC published the regulation in the Federal Register in February, which started a 60-day timeline for the rule to take effect on Monday.

Net neutrality passed under former Democrat FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler in 2015. The rule, known as the Open Internet Order, reclassified the internet as a public monopoly. Critics chided the rule, stating that it would diminish the freedom of the Internet. Proponents argue that the regulations prevent Internet service providers (ISPs) from discriminating against content providers.

The Restoring Internet Freedom Order will reclassify the Internet as an “information service” and will require that Internet service providers (ISPs) such as Comcast or Verizonto release transparency reports detailing their practices on blocking, throttling, and data prioritization for consumers and businesses.

The FCC’s net neutrality repeal order will also restore the Federal Trade Commission’s (FTC) traditional authority and expertise to regulate and litigate unfair, deceptive, and anti-competitive telecommunications practices without onerous regulations and increased cost.

Robert McChesney, a founder of Free Press, once said, “In the end, there is no real answer but to remove brick by brick the capitalist system itself, rebuilding the entire society on socialist principles.” McChesney was cited 46 times in the net neutrality order.

FCC Chairman Pai observed the internet prospered before the FCC enacted net neutrality in 2015. Pai said, “The Internet is the greatest free-market success in American history.”

The publication of the Internet Freedom Order sets a significant milestone in the battle over net neutrality. Twenty-one states, led by California, can now sue the FCC to try to block the FCC’s implementation of the Restoring Internet Freedom Order.

Senate Democrats will also try to use the Congressional Review Act (CRA) to pass a resolution in Congress’ upper chamber to keep the FCC’s net neutrality rules.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) claimed in January that they have a 50-vote majority in the Senate to override the FCC’s recent repeal of the Obama-era net neutrality order. Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) signaled in January that she will side with the Democrats to vote for the CRA resolution to keep net neutrality.

Annie Clark, Collins’ spokeswoman, told the Hill in January, “Senator Collins does not support the FCC’s recent decision to repeal net neutrality rules, and she will support Senator Markey’s legislation that would overturn the FCC’s vote.”

Penn State Officials Shut Down Outdoors Club Because Nature Isn’t ‘Safe’

Penn State Officials Shut Down Outdoors Club Because Nature Isn’t ‘Safe’

Penn State has closed the doors on its 98-year-old Outing Club on the grounds that it threatens “student safety.”

The Penn State Outing has offered students the opportunity to engage in hiking, canoeing, kayaking, trail building and other activities of the sort for almost a century. Now, it has closing its doors after university administrators decided that these activities are too dangerous for students.

“This is a result of an assessment of risk management by the university that determined that the types of activities in which PSOC engages are above the university’s threshold of acceptable risk for recognized student organizations,” the announcement about the group’s closure reads.

Two similar Penn State clubs were also forced to shut down. The Nittany Grotto Caving Club and the Nittany Divers SCUBA Club were also victims of the administration’s recent risk assessment evaluation.

In a comment to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the president of the Outing Club, student Richard Waltz, said that Penn State officials made the decision unilaterally. “Safety is a legitimate concern, but it wasn’t an open dialogue. What’s happening to the club is a shame and negatively impacts the student experience,” Waltz said.

In a conversation on Penn State’s Reddit page, members of the community blasted the university for shutting down the club. “They should just go a step further and ban students from stepping outside because there are squirrels and rabbits out and it would be too risky,” one user wrote.

Other users chided the university, accusing it of hypocrisy for propping up the university’s popular football program while shutting down the Outing Club.

“In other news, football which leads to a ton of concussions and brain damage is A-OK because it makes the University a metric butt-ton of money. I’m done donating to this University, it’s not the one I fell in love with,” another user wrote.

Following Jesus, or Following Trump?

“No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other.” (Matthew 6:24)

The verse refers to money, but in light of today’s debate about the unaccountable devotion many Christian leaders have for President Trump it is not a stretch to apply it to their relationship with him.

Last week at Wheaton College in Illinois a number of Christian pastors and leaders gathered to discuss the future of “evangelicalism” in the Trump era. Some who were not there claimed it was a forum for Trump-bashing, some who were in attendance disagreed.

There is a conceit among some conservative Christians that God is only at work when a person they voted for is elected and that the rest of the time He must be attending to other countries. “God showed up,” said Franklin Graham following Trump’s election. Scripture states that all authority comes from God and that “The king’s heart is in the hand of the Lord like channels of water; he turns it wherever he wants.”(Proverbs 21:1)

That means that God also must have “shown up” when Barack Obama and Bill Clinton and every other president was elected. The Almighty does, in fact, have a different agenda than us earthlings and sometimes He puts up leaders to judge people for their wicked behavior.

Long ago I stopped answering people’s questions about my denominational background for at least two reasons. The first is that I don’t want to be defined by a label, the meaning of which can mean different things to different people. The second reason is that I don’t want to be aligned with various causes and movements (spare me from movements) that have little or nothing to do with the God in whom I believe.

Which brings me to today’s “evangelicals.” If you do not identify as one, or if you are secular, can you define the term without a Google search? Probably not, but the word has invaded the culture much like “born again” (usually in quotes in newspaper stories) in the ’70s when Jimmy Carter publicly pronounced his second birth.

Evangelicals mostly voted for the church-going Carter in 1976, though not in 1980, preferring instead the non-church-going Ronald Reagan. I understand. It was more about policy than piety.

That brings me back to the debate within evangelical circles as to whether President Trump deserves the support, even adulation, even fawning, of some in their tribe.

I will leave that for now to those debating the issue and ask a more important question. What would happen in our culture and especially in our politics if all of those who call themselves evangelicals began obeying the commands of Jesus of Nazareth?

As I read the Scriptures, which evangelicals believe are infallible and inerrant, both Testaments place obedience as a top priority for believers.

If God is supreme and Jesus is Savior, doesn’t it follow that their commands and teachings should be paramount?

There is no expectation, much less any command, for believers to prop up a fallen world through government. It’s quite the opposite. What would be the world’s perception of evangelicals if they started obeying the commands of their true leader? Those commands are to love your enemies, pray for those who persecute you, feed the hungry (that’s personal, not government), clothe the naked, visit those in prison and care for widows and orphans.

Yes, some do these things, but not enough. Today, “evangelicals” are perceived by many as one more interest group attached to the Republican Party and especially President Trump. Its members need to make a choice as to which one is their true “master.” They can’t serve both.

PEAK WOKE: White Actress Turns Down Role In West Side Story To Make Room For Latinas

Actress and singer Sierra Boggess, who originated the role of Ariel in “The Little Mermaid” on Broadway, announced this week that she would not perform as Maria in a concert version of West Side Story at Royal Albert Hall for the BBC Proms in London because it “would once again deny Latinas the opportunity to sing this score.” Boggess had been criticized for accepting the role.

Fresno State prof: Damn right I stand by my celebration of Barbara Bush’s death

Nowadays, when embroiled in controversy, it usually makes sense to double down. If you apologize your allies will resent you. And (most of) your enemies won’t forgive.

It’s one of the many incentives in modern life to behave like a dipsh*t and be proud of it.

Randa Jarrar, the Fresno State teacher who cheered the death of Barbara Bush and then taunted her critics by claiming she could never be fired, has learned her lesson about controversy well.

In spite of all the backlash, Jarrar told the Cut she “absolutely” stands by her comments.

“I felt compelled to speak up because I want people to remember history. I want people to know that our country’s actions don’t just disappear; they have real, negative consequences,” she said in an email. “If we want a better future, we have to confront our past.” Jarrar elaborated on her criticism of the former First Lady, citing the Bush family legacy in Iraq and Barbara’s comments about Anita Hill (whose claims she doubted) and Katrina victims (she once said evacuees were “underprivileged anyway” and better off in the Astrodome). “The Bush family — including Barbara Bush — supported policies that harmed and destroyed the lives of millions,” she said.

Jarrar is of Egyptian, Greek, and Palestinian heritage and her writing — including her semi-autobiographical novel, A Map of Home, and her short story collection, Him, Me, Muhammad Ali — often touches upon Arab-American and Muslim-American themes. When asked if she believes she received more abuse because of her ethnic background, Jarrar said she does. “I am not the only person who has stated the belief that Barbara Bush was a racist,” she explained. “But women of color routinely have their tone policed, their justified anger painted as hatred, and their criticism of injustice framed as racism toward white people.”

Admittedly, some of the backlash has been … excessive:

Jarrar claims she hasn’t gotten any notice from Fresno State that she’s being investigated. She probably won’t either. Her case has already become a minor cause celebre among free-speech advocates, likely because it’s a rare moment when the interests of liberal and conservative intellectuals overlap. For righties, this is a chance to show the left how conservative speakers feel when universities allow the heckler’s veto to shut them down. For lefties, it’s a chance to preserve the academic’s sacred right to condemn prominent right-wingers in the most acidic terms. Various civil-liberty groups, including FIRE and the ACLU, sent a letter to Fresno State’s president a few days ago laying out the relevant First Amendment analysis in Jarrar’s case and arguing that her speech is clearly protected. The school’s president may have given away the game when he stressed in a statement after her original tweets about Bush that she was speaking in a private capacity, not on behalf of the school. That’s good PR, but once you admit that she was exercising her rights as a private citizen on a matter of public concern, any attempt to oust her is all but dead legally.

The one wrinkle: Jarrar posted the number of an Arizona State student crisis hotline after her Bush tweets, passing it off as her own number and inviting her critics to call. They did — a lot. The hotline, which typically gets five calls a week, was getting 50-70 an hour the next day. The administrators assured people that they don’t think any students seeking help were deterred by the phone logjam, but if Fresno State’s looking for a reason to discipline Jarrar, that’s a more fruitful angle than the fact that she was “disrespectful.” Being nasty to a political enemy who just died is ugly but not unusual. Pranking your critics by getting them to jam up a mental-health hotline is deeply weird and dangerous.

Lefty Michelle Goldberg, writing in the Times a few days ago, made a fair point about Jarrar. What about Roger Stone? Stone is the Republican political dirty trickster turned Trump crony who pops up in Russiagate stories from time to time about maybe having kibitzed with Wikileaks during the 2016 campaign. He’s not “mainstream,” exactly, but as a friend of the president’s and a guy frequently quoted in stories about him, he’s not not mainstream either. When Barbara Bush died, he chimed in with this:

“Barbara Bush was a nasty drunk. When it came to drinking she made Betty Ford look like Carrie Nation #blottoBabs,” said Stone. “Barbara Bush drank so much booze, if they cremated her … her body would burn for three days.”…

“She said far worse things about me,” Stone told TheWrap. “Barbara Bush was a vindictive, entitled, mean spirited woman. May she rest in peace.”

He repeated the claim on Alex Jones’s show afterward, emphasizing that Bush was presently “ascending” into hell. Is Stone persona non grata on the right now for sharing Randa Jarrar’s general sentiment? I doubt he’s persona non grata to Trump or to populists, both of whom also hold the Bushes in deep disdain but who (for the most part) were at least too tactful to remind everyone of that while Mrs. Bush was on her deathbed. Not Stone. He’s “politically incorrect” to the very bitter end.

State Refuses To Let Parents Get Treatment: Baby Alfie’s Dad Giving Him Mouth-To-Mouth In Hospital To ‘Keep Him Alive’

Via Daily Wire:

The horror out of the U.K. concerning sick 23-month-old baby Alfie Evans continues. Earlier on Tuesday, Alfie was effectively sentenced to death yet again by the U.K. court system after a judge denied the the parents’ request to travel to Italy to seek further treatment.

Now, with the child off of life-support since Monday evening and battling for his life, the baby’s parents have been forced to give Alfie mouth-to-mouth while sitting in a hospital.

“Evans’ parents are giving him mouth-to-mouth resuscitation in a desperate bid to keep him alive after a court ruled he cannot be flown to Italy for treatment,” reported The Sun on Tuesday evening. “Tom Evans tonight said he and Alfie’s mum Kate are trying to help Alfie’s breathing after ‘his lips turned blue.’”

Italy has even threatened them with a murder charge to try to save Alfie. But they don’t care.

Sen. Bernie Sanders to Unveil Plan to Give Every American a Guaranteed Government Job

Sen. Bernie Sanders to Unveil Plan to Give Every American a Guaranteed Government Job

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) is set to unveil a plan that would give American workers who want or need jobs guaranteed government jobs that pay at least $15 per hour and have health benefits.

The progressive Vermont senator’s guaranteed jobs plan would entitle any American a job or job training in U.S.-funded projects in infrastructure, the environment, caregiving, and education, but he did not provide a cost-estimate or plan to fund the proposal, the Washington Post reported.

A representative from Sanders’ office said no funding estimate was available for the project because staffers were still crafting the proposal.

Two other potential 2020 presidential candidates—Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ) and Sen. Kristen Gillibrand (D-NY)—have expressed interest in crafting similar proposals.

“The goal is to eliminate working poverty and involuntary unemployment altogether,” said Darrick Hamilton, an economist at The New School who expressed support for a guaranteed jobs program. “This is an opportunity for something transformative, beyond the tinkering we’ve been doing for the last 40 years, where all the productivity gains have gone to the elite of society.”

Critics of the plan have said guaranteed jobs proposals would not be sustainable or affordable, and would cause massive job losses in the private sector.

Studies have shown that states and cities which choose to enact a $15 per hour minimum wage trigger job losses. A December 2017 study found that once California’s minimum wage hike takes effect in 2022, the state would lose 400,000 jobs.

“It completely undercuts a lot of industries and companies,” Brian Riedl, a senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute who opposes the program, told the Post. “There will be pressure to introduce a higher wage or certain benefits that the private sector doesn’t offer.”

The proposal is unlikely to gain favor with Republicans in control of Congress, and even most Democrats have slammed similar plans as unrealistic.

“It would be extremely expensive, and I wonder if this is the best, most targeted use of the amount of money it would cost,” said Ernie Tedeschi, an economist who worked for the Treasury during the Obama administration.

The Vermont senator’s proposal comes days after he declared President Trump’s agenda “dead” if the Democratic Party wins the majority in the House or Senate.

MRC Senior Fellow LTC Allen B. West (USA, Ret) Responds to Facebook’s Takedown Policies

RESTON, VA – Media Research Center (MRC) Senior Fellow LTC Allen B. West (USA, Ret) issued the following statement Tuesday concerning Facebook’s community guidelines publicly released earlier today. LTC West serves as MRC’s primary spokesperson for its Censorship Project.

According to NewsBusters, the newly published content removal policies may classify “vocalizing not liking a particular protected group” as hate speech and include protections for “immigration status.” The community standards also address how Facebook is combating fake news. While Facebook states it does not remove “false news,” the guidelines say it is “reducing the distribution of content rated as false by independent third-party fact-checkers.” Facebook has offered little transparency regarding which “independent fact-checkers” it partners with, as well as outside individuals and organizations it works with.

Statement by MRC Senior Fellow LTC Allen B. West (USA, Ret):

Facebook has made very little clear today. The takedown policies outlined are vague and could easily be abused to censor those that Facebook simply disagrees with. By their definition, my belief in traditional marriage could be spun as ‘hate speech.’ Their unnamed ‘fact-checkers’ could suppress conservative media, labeling it as ‘false news.’ When the liberal, progressive left felt they did not have a fair playing field on talk radio, they sought to impose a ‘fairness doctrine.’ The left pretends to love the word fairness until it is applied to them.

As extensive as these community standards are, Facebook has neglected to address what it is doing to ensure conservative and liberal political and cultural expression have equal footing on its website. If Facebook is truly a ‘platform for all ideas,’ as CEO Mark Zuckerberg says, it must take steps to guarantee these rules are not used to further silence and suppress conservative voices.

Here Is Why Conservatives Should Worry About Facebook’s Newly Published Guidelines

Conservatives have good reason to be worried about Facebook. Newly published information about the site’s Community Standards, which guide what content is allowed and what is prohibited, shows it has vague restrictions on what it deems to be “hate speech” and “hate organizations.” It also discusses how the site will handle “false news” and raises concerns about the groups that it partners with.

But the hate speech guidelines are the big issue. Facebook has designated “protected characteristics” including: “race, ethnicity, national origin, religious affiliation, sexual orientation, sex, gender, gender identity, and serious disability or disease.” It also includes “some protections for immigration status.”
