Acid Attack ‘No Go Zones’ in London, Admits Labour MP

Acid Attack ‘No Go Zones’ in London, Admits Labour MP

The frequency of acid attacks in London has turned parts of the British capital into “no go zones”, a former Labour minister has said.

The United Kingdom has “the highest rate of attacks per capita” in the world, claimed Stephen Timms, Labour MP for East Ham, in comments to fellow MPs reported by the Daily Mail.

Figures show the number of acid attacks in Britain shot up between 2012 and 2016 by more than 500 per cent. There were just 73 recorded attacks in 2012 but a massive 469 in 2016.

“The UK now has one of the highest rates of recorded acid and corrosive substance attacks per capita in the world and this number appears to be rising,” admitted Assistant Chief Constable Rachel Kearton, the National Police Chiefs Council (NPCC) lead on acid attacks, earlier this month.

Some left-wingers have argued that No Go Zones are an invention of the right, however, they have been written about extensively by journalists who have investigated the issue and visited them.

Politicians had been debating the UK’s problem with acid attacks on Wednesday, and Mr. Timms demanded the government take “significant action”.

He said: “I’ve had a number of discussions with representatives of moped delivery drivers and they say there are now parts of London where their drivers are not willing to go because of the danger of attack.

“I think all of us would regard it as unacceptable that there are no go areas in parts of London and parts of the UK. I think it requires some significant action to deal with the problem.”

Crime across England and Wales surged by 13 per cent in the year ending in June this year, with violent crime shooting up even more steeply. Offences of violence against the person, for example, increased by 19 per cent on the previous year.

Labour MP for West Ham Lyn Brown joined Mr. Timms in his calls for action during the debate, demanding much tighter regulation.

She claimed that initial steps to counter acid attacks “had been positive”, adding: “changes were made to the law in 2015 as part of the Deregulation Act, the red tape bonfire.

“The Act scrapped the obligation on sellers of dangerous substances, including acids, to be registered with their local council.

“This was despite opposing advice from the medical experts as well as the Government’s own advisory board on dangerous substances. I fear that these changes are partly responsible for the rise in acid attacks.”

In August, London police said they had identified “emerging links” between violent gang crime in the city and the surge in acid and moped attacks across the London area.

Gangs and organised crime groups were increasingly deploying corrosive liquids as a weapon, London’s Metropolitan force said.

Breitbart London editor-in-chief Raheem Kassam has written a book on No Go Zones, which can be found here.

Christmas Sidelined at German School After Muslim Complains Over Carols

Christmas Sidelined at German School After Muslim Complains Over Carols

A 600-year-old school in Germany has ditched Christmas celebrations during class time after a Muslim pupil said that carols were incompatible with Islam.

After a stir in local media over reports that the Johanneum Gymnasium in Lüneburg had “cancelled” Christmas following a Muslim girl’s complaint that the songs conflicted with her religion, the school’s headmaster said that the school was taking “a sensitive approach” to the festive season.

Headmaster Friedrich Suhr confirmed that the complaint had taken place, but denied it was behind the decision of management at the school — one of the oldest in northern Germany — to postpone and make voluntary its annual Christmas party.

The headmaster also explained that that music lessons at the school would no longer include songs with religiously-themed lyrics, pointing to regional education board rules which require teachers show consideration to pupils from minority faiths.

A spokesman for the local authority appeared to dispute this interpretation of the rules, noting that while it is up to individual schools to decide how to conform to regulations, the Education Act in no way demands a ban on Christian songs.

Bianca Schöneich warned, however, that “religious content in schools should be done in moderation”, and added that “a Christmas party should not have the character of a church service”.

A number of church figures have hit out at the school for taking an overly sensitive approach, with Catholic Bureau of Lower Saxony prelate Felix Bernard pointing out that religious music in Germany “is part of our cultural heritage”.

“The singing of Christmas carols constitutes neither a religious confession nor a service”, he told Hannoversche Allgemeine Zeitung.

Auxiliary Bishop Nikolaus Schwerdtfeger added it should go without saying that Christmas carols would be sung at Christmas celebrations in a Christian country.

“The fact that a school Christmas party can not take place during class time, I find a pity and also a bit absurd,” he said.

Norddeutscher Rundfunk reported that the issue has caused “heated debate” among pupils at Johanneum Gymnasium, with one lamenting to the public broadcaster: “Something that was never a problem before is now being made into one.”

On the other hand, pupil spokesman Thurka Parathaman backed the move to marginalise Christmas at the school, stating that it would not be right to have an event “for Christians that excludes other religions”.

The Guardian: Trump’s Election Awakened Big Tech to the ‘Horror’ of Its Own Inventions

The Guardian: Trump’s Election Awakened Big Tech to the ‘Horror’ of Its Own Inventions

Julia Carrie Wong writes at The Guardian that the election of Donald Trump has shocked the tech industry into taking a more critical look at their effect on the world:

Tech’s nascent moment of reckoning is welcome – if somewhat belated. Victor Frankenstein recognized that his creation was a “miserable monster” on the very same “dreary night of November” that he created it. It appears to have taken a full decade and a different dreary November night to awaken the new class of tech agonistes to the horror of their inventions.

The election of Donald Trump was “a big slap in the face” for people at Facebook, said Antonio Garcia-Martinez, a former Facebook product manager. To most Facebook employees, Garcia-Martinez said, “Trump is the incarnation of Satan. The fact that they helped Satan get elected does dog a lot of people.”

Ev Williams, one of the co-founders of Twitter, told the New York Times this spring that Twitter’s role in Donald Trump’s rise to the presidency was “a very bad thing”, adding: “If it’s true that he wouldn’t be president if it weren’t for Twitter, then yeah, I’m sorry.”

Report: Forced Abortions Continue in China Under ‘Two-Child Policy’

The Congressional Executive Commission on China has released its 2017 Report, which contains documentation of continued forced abortion under China’s Two-Child Policy.

“Chinese authorities continue to actively promote and implement coercive population planning policies that violate international standards,” the Congressional Report declares in its section titled “Population Control.”

The two-child policy regulations “include provisions that require couples to be married to have children and limit them to bearing two children,” with coercive population control at the heart of enforcement of the new regulations, it states.

“Officials continue to enforce compliance with population planning targets using methods including heavy fines, job termination, arbitrary detention, and coerced abortion,” the report states.

Some provincial-level Chinese population planning rules continue to explicitly instruct officials to carry out abortions, often referred to as ‘remedial measures’ for ‘out-of-plan’ [illegal] pregnancies, with some provinces urging functionaries to “use all means necessary” in enforcing the regulations.

When China announced that it was “abandoning” its draconian one-child policy in 2015, the claim was met with skepticism among critics, who contended that the move substantially changed nothing, since the communist government still asserts absolute control over families and will continue to enforce its will with coercion.

Critics such as Reggie Littlejohn, founder and president of Women’s Rights Without Frontiers, have said that the new Congressional Report vindicates their warnings at the time. Littlejohn told Breitbart News: “Under the Two-Child Policy, single women are still forcibly aborted, as are third children.”

Back in 2015, Littlejohn remarked that any mention of human rights was “noticeably absent” from the Communist party’s announcement. “Even though it will now allow all couples to have a second child, China has not promised to end forced abortion, forced sterilization, or forced contraception,” she said.

The news media at the time bought into the story that China had “abandoned” or “scrapped” its One-Child Policy, a depiction that Littlejohn called “demonstrably false.”

The new report also states that the sex ratio at birth reported by the Chinese government themselves indicates that the selective abortion of baby girls continues unabated under the new policy.

Although Chinese authorities continue to officially frown on sex-selective abortion, “some people reportedly continue the practice in response to government imposed birth limits and in keeping with a traditional cultural preference for sons,” the report declares.

According to a National Bureau of Statistics Report, the sex ratio at birth in 2015 was 113.5 males born for every 100 females born, a disproportion that could only be achieved through sex-selective abortion.  Years of such sex-selective favoring of boys has resulted in an estimated 33 to 37 million more males living in China than females. This imbalance is fueling sex trafficking from multiple nations into China “for forced marriage or commercial sexual exploitation” to help fill the gender gap.

“China’s Two-Child Policy continues the human rights abuses and gender-based violence of the One-Child Policy,” Littlejohn stated, while noting that “China remains firmly on the path to demographic disaster” due to its dangerously low birthrate.

China “should be offering incentives for couples to have babies, not forcibly aborting ‘illegal’ pregnancies,” Littlejohn added.

Donald Trump: Democrats Want Government Shutdown for Christmas

Donald Trump: Democrats Want Government Shutdown for Christmas

President Donald Trump challenged Democrats over rumors of a government shutdown, suggesting that they might fail to pass a continuing resolution to fund the government.

“House Democrats want a SHUTDOWN for the holidays in order to distract from the very popular, just passed, Tax Cuts,” Trump wrote on Twitter. “House Republicans, don’t let this happen. Pass the C.R. TODAY and keep our Government OPEN!”

Republicans do not have a firm solution to prevent a shutdown, despite promises from leaders that it will not occur.

“I don’t see a shutdown happening,” Freedom Caucus chairman Mark Meadows said in an interview on CNN. “We were negotiating into the late hours to make sure that we at least have 218 votes on the House side and send it over to the Senate hopefully as early as today.”

Funding for the government ends on Friday after Congress passed a short continuing resolution in September which was a plan favored by House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and agreed to by Trump.

On December 7th, Congress passed a two-week extension to keep the government open until December 22.

The latest plan from House leaders proposes a new funding extension that will fund the government through January 19.

Survey Finds Students Do Not Support Academic Boycotts of Israel

A survey found the majority of students at four American universities do not support boycott, divestment, and sanctions (BDS) of Israel, despite the student government at one of the schools studied passing a BDS resolution this semester.

Non-Jewish and Jewish students alike at Brandeis University, Harvard University, the University of Pennsylvania, and the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor were overwhelmingly against a boycott of Israeli academic institutions and scholars, according to a study released this month by the Steinhardt Social Research Institute at Brandeis.

At Brandeis, 10 percent of non-Jewish students expressed support for an academic boycott of Israel, and less than 70 percent of their Jewish peers said they “strongly disagree” with boycotts, according to the report.

At the time the surveys were conducted, during the 2015 to 2017 academic years, none of the four institutions had seen a BDS vote and student support for such a motion “appeared limited.”

Michigan-Ann Arbor last month passed its first ever anti-Israel resolution in a blind vote by the student government. The process has been criticized as non-transparent, and supporters of the motion—which was rejected by the university and the regents—were caught making disparaging comments about Jews.

Leonard Saxe, director of both Steinhardt and the Cohen Center for Modern Jewish Studies, who co-wrote the study, said he believes the report’s results hold true even after that vote.

“Despite a small number of people in student government being able to manipulate the situation to get a yes vote, it doesn’t mean all or even majority or academics or of students are in favor,” he said.

He added that he thought the question, which asked only about one specific form of BDS—academic boycott—would have been understood “broadly enough” by students to make it possible for searchers to extrapolate a conclusion about BDS feeling at those schools writ large.

“This study puts it into perspective: BDS is not a major problem,” said Saxe. “BDS doesn’t represent the views of a large proportion of people, and certainly not of Jews.”

Max Samarov, executive director of research and campus strategy at Israel education non-profit StandWithUs, said, “The phrasing of the question certainly made the chances of finding many who would support it [BDS] lower. Academic boycotts, specifically, are wildly unpopular.”

Samarov added that the he did not believe responses favorable to a general BDS move would be “substantially higher,” but that a bump would be expected.

Saxe said a BDS vote could “mobilize apathetic students to learn and care about Israel.”

Saxe said his team intends to release deep dive reports on other schools by the end of the academic year.

Obama Aide Wishes For Pence, McConnell, Ryan Death — Steve Scalise Shuts Him Down Hard

Ben Rhodes, a former Obama deputy national security adviser to Barack Obama, wasn’t too happy with the GOP tax-cut passed by Congress this week.

So, like some liberals, he simply decided to call for the death of his political opponents.

First, Dan Pfieffer, who was Obama’s White House communications director, decided to communicate his own smug little wish.

Hahahahahaha! Oh, they look so silly! And it’s four white people! (Congressional leadership for the Democrats, four white people. But never mind that!)

Then Rhodes chimed in.

Oh, that is truly hilarious! See, ‘cuz they’d be dead, the House Speaker, the Senate leader, the vice president.

Enter GOP Rep. Steve Scalise of Louisiana, who was nearly killed in a shooting in June during a Congressional baseball practice. The bullet traveled across his pelvis, shattered his femur and broke other bones, injured internal organs, and caused severe bleeding. He’s undergone numerous surgeries as doctors tried to put him back together, as he said “like rebuilding Humpty Dumpty.”

And that, folks, is that. We’ll just leave this here.

Haley at U.N.: The U.S. Will Remember This Day When It Was ‘Singled Out and Attacked’

U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley on Thursday spoke ahead of a U.N. General Assembly vote to condemn the U.S. decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, and said the U.S. will remember those who vote against it.

"I’ve often wondered why, in the face of such hostility, Israel has chosen to remain a member of this body, and then I remember that Israel has chosen to remain in this institution because it’s important to stand up for yourself," Haley said.

Egypt called for a vote at the U.N. General Assembly after the United States vetoed a resolution put to the Security Council rejecting Washington’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and its intention to relocate the U.S. embassy there, CNN reported. The U.S. cannot veto General Assembly motions, which are non-binding.

Haley accused the U.N. of disrespecting the United States by attacking its Jerusalem decision.

"We’ll be honest with you, when we make generous contributions to the U.N., we also have a legitimate expectation that our goodwill is recognized and respected," Haley said.

Haley argued that the United States "is being asked to pay for the privilege of being disrespected," and threatened to cut off funding to the U.N.

"We have an obligation to acknowledge when our political and financial capital is being poorly spent. We have an obligation to demand more for our investment. If our investment fails, we have an obligation to spend our resources in more productive ways," Haley said.

Critics of the embassy decision say it will hurt peace efforts, a view Haley dismissed. She said it’s within America’s rights to choose the location of its embassy.

"The United States will remember this day in which it was singled out for attack in the General Assembly for the very act of exercising our right as a sovereign nation," Haley said.

"This vote will make a difference on how Americans look at the UN and on how we look at countries who disrespect us in the UN and this vote will be remembered," she added.

Prior to Thursday’s address, Haley referenced her upcoming speech Wednesday on Twitter, quoting President Donald Trump’s view on those who criticize the U.S. decision on Jerusalem.

"We’re watching those votes," Trump said Wednesday. "Let them vote against us, we’ll save a lot. We don’t care. But this isn’t like it used to be where they could vote against you and then you pay them hundreds of millions of dollars and nobody knows what they’re doing."

Major Companies to Invest in Workers, Charity After Tax Reform Passage

Several large companies announced that they will increase their philanthropic activity and invest more in their workers—in the form of bonuses, higher wages, or additional hiring—after Congress passed sweeping tax reform legislation on Wednesday.

Telecommunications giant AT&T said that it will give $1,000 special bonuses to more than 200,000 employees and invest an additional $1 billion in the U.S. shortly after both the House and Senate passed the Republican tax plan, which, among other measures, lowers the corporate tax rate permanently to 21 percent from 35 percent, as of Jan. 1, 2018.

"Congress, working closely with the president, took a monumental step to bring taxes paid by U.S. businesses in line with the rest of the industrialized world," said Randall Stephenson, chairman and CEO of AT&T. "This tax reform will drive economic growth and create good-paying jobs. In fact, we will increase our U.S. investment and pay a special bonus to our U.S. employees."

Aerospace company Boeing announced that, as a result of tax reform legislation passing, it will commit $300 million to "employee-related and charitable investment."

The courier delivery services company FedEx, which projects that the legislation will boost annual profits by $1.3 billion, may hire additional employees and make other capital investments because of the tax overhaul.

"U.S. GDP could increase materially next year as a result of U.S. tax reform," chief financial officer Alan Graf said, according to the Washington Post. "If this occurs, we would likely increase capital expenditures and hiring to accommodate the additional volumes triggered from this incremental GDP growth."

Graf added that FedEx anticipates at least $5.9 billion in capital spending in 2018.

Banks are also announcing plans to benefit their employees with the passage of tax reform.

Wells Fargo said that it will raise its minimum wage for American employees to $15 an hour and increase its philanthropic giving by 40 percent in 2018 to $400 million.

Fifth Third will also raise its minimum wage to $15 an hour for employees and give bonuses of $1,000 to more than 13,500 employees.

"We want to invest in our most important asset—our people," said Greg Carmichael, president and CEO of Fifth Third. "Our employees drive our reputation, our business, and our success."

Telecommunications company Comcast, which owns NBC, announced that it will give bonuses of $1,000 to more than 100,000 employees because of the passage of tax reform. The bonuses will all go to non-executive employees.

U.S. Sanctions Top Burmese General, 51 Others for Human Rights Abuses

BY:

The Trump administration has leveled sanctions on 52 individuals from Burma, Russia, Uzbekistan, Pakistan, Nicaragua, and elsewhere under a new law designed to punish serious human rights abusers and corruption.

Trump issued the executive order Thursday imposing the sanctions and declared “a national emergency with respect to serious human rights abuse and corruption around the world.”

The list includes a former Burmese Army commander who oversaw military operations in the Rakhine State responsible for widespread human rights abuses against the Rohingya, a Muslim minority ethnic group in the country.

The sanctions also target Gulnara Karimova, the eldest daughter of the late longtime Uzbek president Islam Karimov, who headed a powerful organized crime syndicate, and Artem Chayka, the son of Russian official Yury Chayka. Artem Chayka is accused of using his father’s position and power to unfairly award state-owned assets and contracts.

The list includes Sergei Kusiuk, commander of an elite Ukrainian special police force, who is accused of leading an attack on peaceful protesters in 2013 and then ordering the destruction of papers documenting the events.

The administration imposed the sanctions under the Global Magnitsky Human Rights Accountability Act, which Congress passed last year. The law expanded the power of the original Magnitsky act, which only targets Russian individuals for the same type of alleged abuses.

Treasury announced on Wednesday new sanctions on five Russian individuals under the Magnitsky act, including Ramzan Kadyrov, the leader of the Chechnya region. The U.S. government accused Kadyrov of torture and “extra-judicial” killings.

“Today, the United States is taking a strong stand against human rights abuse and corruption globally by shutting these bad actors out of the U.S. financial system,” Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin said in a statement.

The Treasury Department froze the individuals’ assets and publicly denounced “the egregious acts they’ve committed, sending a message that there is a steep price to pay for their misdeeds,” Mnuchin added.

U.S. citizens and residents also are generally prohibited from engaging in transactions with the sanctioned individuals.

The list includes Roberto Jose Rivas Reyes, the president of Nicaragua’s electoral council, which is responsible for organizing elections in the country, for engaging in electoral fraud, and amassing a fortune—including multiple properties, jets, luxury vehicles, and a yacht—while receiving a modest government salary.

A bipartisan coalition of members of Congress, late last month, called on Trump to impose the sanctions on Reyes, as well as another Nicaraguan official, for a wide variety of “well-documented” human-rights abuses, corruption, and illicit activity in support of President Daniel Ortega’s regime.

The new sanctions also target Mukhtar Hamid Shah, a Pakistani surgeon specializing in kidney transplants who Pakistani police believe is involved in the trafficking of human organs.

Dan Gertler, an international businessman and billionaire accused of hundreds of millions of dollars in corrupt mining deals in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, also made the list, along with Yahya Jammeh, the former president of the Gambia who stepped down earlier this year, for a long history of engaging in human rights abuses and corruption, including creating and supporting the Junglers, a terror and assassination squad that answered directly to him.

Sergei Magnitsky was a Russian lawyer who was instrumental in exposing corruption at the Kremlin. Congress passed the original Magnitsky Act in 2012 to blacklist several officials linked to his murder.

Russian officials have decried the law and barred U.S. citizens from adopting Russian children in response.
