Why Your Sons Refuse to Read

A few years back, my friend Mike McMullen and I were driving to Oklahoma for a seriously incorrect weekend of eating, drinking, and shooting, when Mike posed a question. He asked if I had time to take a look at a novel he was working on.

An engineer by profession and an outdoorsman by inclination, Mike did not strike me as a would-be novelist.

“What’s it about?” I asked. “We’ve got another hour so. We can just talk it through.”

“Well,” said Mike shyly, “it’s about this concealed-carry expert. One night he’s out walking his dog, and he runs into a . . . uh . . . uh . . . he runs into a . . . Martian.”

“A Martian!” I laughed. “Stop right there. Don’t send me your book. In fact, don’t tell me another word. Start the novel over.”

“What should my guy run into then?” Mike asked defensively.

“How about a Muslim terrorist,” I suggested. And so was born The Hunt, a political thriller from Permuted Press available December 10 wherever you buy books. Or, for a collector’s item signed by both Mike and me, check out TheHuntBook.com.

What prompted me to embark on a novel was the research I had recently been doing on the increasing failure of young males in academic settings. I cite Kansas as an example here only because the Kansas State Department of Education (KSDE) does a good job of testing its students and making test results available.

Last year, in the best performing public high school in Kansas, 45 percent of the school’s tenth graders tested not proficient in the English Language Arts. In the worst performing school, an incredible 97 percent of the tenth graders tested not proficient. In the average suburban high school, inevitably considered “excellent” by town boosters, 60 to 80 percent of the students failed to reach the low bar of proficiency in language arts.

The KSDE does not break the scores out by gender, but if it did, the boys would be the ones pulling the numbers down. They pull the language numbers down wherever tested.

High school failures lead to underperformance in college. In 2018, for instance, females earned nearly 59 percent of all the academic degrees awarded in the United States. The Department of Education expects the trend to continue. By 2027 women are projected earn 151 college degrees for every 100 degrees earned by men.

One major reason for male failure is the effete dreck boys are assigned to read in schools. A recommended high school reading list from the library in Montgomery County, Maryland, an affluent Washington suburb, speaks to the problem everywhere. Some samples:

In Will Grayson, Will Grayson, two teens with the same name, one gay and one straight, accidentally meet. Hilarity ensues.

In The Wee Free Men. A young witch meets up with six-inch-high blue men and the Queen of Fairyland.  The author, a self-described British “humanist,” is an associate of the “National Secular Society,” an organization “explicitly created for those who reject the supernatural.”

Struts & Frets is the first book by Jon Skovron. His second book, Misfit, is described by Kirkus as “a diabolically delightful paranormal about a teen girl discovering her inner strength and power — and her potential for darkness.”

Nine of the twelve books on the Montgomery County list were written by women. Eight of them have female protagonists. None of the three books written by male authors offers boys anything like guidance on how to become men, and all three serve up something to offend any kid who takes his faith seriously. It is no wonder that girls today are an incredible ten times more likely to read a book on their own than boys.

It doesn’t have to be like this. When I enrolled in high school, I was assigned a reading list for the summer before class began. I still remember many of the books I was assigned— Call of the Wild, Annapurna, Kon-Tiki, Red Badge of Courage, Mutiny on the Bounty, Men Against the Sea, Huckleberry Finn.

Not only did the books hold our attention, but they also instructed us boys in the virtues needed to become men. We saw examples of courage, of resourcefulness, of perseverance, of teamwork. True, I had the advantage of attending an all-boys high school, but even in co-ed schools there is no good reason to shield boys from reading books they might actually profit from reading.

One reason I rejected the man vs. Martian scenario is because kids today are saturated with fantasy scenarios. Another, of course, was the financial underperformance of Cowboys vs. Aliens, a movie whose very title condemned it to failure.

Good male fiction hinges on plausibility. For that reason I recruited Mike into the writing project. I may be an Eagle Scout, but Mike goes elk hunting in Colorado, where the novel is set. To work, male fiction has to be technically perfect. An author cannot Google his way to credibility.

Mike also has two sons, now both U.S. Marines. In the Hunt, we tell the story of a recently widowed father, a veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan, who takes his adolescent sons on an elk hunt only to discover they are the ones being hunted. The hunters are not Martians. They are Muslim terrorists in league with Mexican drug cartels. Political correctness, of the sort in which movies now abound, subverts real story telling.

We submitted the book for early review to people who knew their way around the wilderness. Said one retired U.S. Army colonel, “The Hunt is an all-to-plausible action-packed story of perseverance, fatherhood, duty, self-sacrifice and redemption. Real-life application of military skills learned the hard way. Mike and Jack have winner of a tale that keeps the pages turnin’!”

Virtue does not come naturally. It is learned. And a novel can still be a good place to learn it.

‘Huge deal’: Levin discusses news report raising questions about Adam Schiff and the alleged whistleblower

Tuesday night on the radio, LevinTV host Mark Levin discussed a news report that raises even more questions about the House of Representatives’ current impeachment efforts against President Donald Trump.

“The greatest threat we face today … is not from the Russians, although they are a grave threat … but from the Democrat Party and the media,” Levin began. “They have done more to undermine this president and try and thwart his ability to be commander in chief than any foreign power can.”

Levin read from a story published earlier that day at the Washington Examiner, which found that a former coworker of the alleged CIA whistleblower was hired to staff the House Intelligence Committee — chaired by Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif. — the day after the July phone call between President Donald Trump and his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky.

The story is a “big deal,” Levin explained, because it “shows you the conspiracy and the coordination that was taking place” in the lead-up to the Democrats’ impeachment probe.

“You can see why Schiff is protecting these individuals,” Levin added. “It could be that his staffer — I don’t know; I’d like to question him under oath — it could be that his staffer was one of the individuals feeding the so-called whistleblower.”

The host went on to say that though the story is a “huge deal,” it will “be ignored by the vast majority of television newsrooms, so-called.”

Levin said that when the matter goes to the Senate, Majority Leader Mitch McConnell “damn well better get to the bottom of this, or folks in Kentucky, throw his a** out.”

NYT Begs SCOTUS: Throw out Case Instead of Ruling Against Gun Control

The New York Times editorial board is asking the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) to toss out a challenge against New York City gun control rather than rule against the controls at the center of the challenge.

Breitbart News reported that SCOTUS was hearing a challenge to the NYC gun control on Monday, December 1, 2019. The gun control prohibited licensed firearm owners from transporting their firearms to all but seven city-approved gun ranges.

On December 2, 2019, the NYT editorial board begged SCOTUS to discard the case, pointing to the fact that NYC repealed their gun control when it became evident that SCOTUS would take the case. The editorial board contends “sanity and common sense” now compel the dismissal of the case altogether.

At the same time, they argue that the DC. v. Heller (2008) decision allowed room for municipal gun controls. They say, “Lower courts have read the Heller opinion as permitting all manner of gun-control measures, including bans on assault rifles and high-capacity magazines.”

The editorial board’s argument ignores the McDonald v. Chicago (2010) decision, which struck down a city-wide gun ban on the basis that Second Amendment rights are incorporated. Such incorporation prohibits city and state governments from infringing on gun rights just as it prohibits the federal government from infringing as well.

Teen Drama Preaches Tolerance for Gays, Sings About Slitting Wrists on ‘Your Holy Bible’

We all know the saying, “Do as I say, not as I do.” And when it comes to the left’s virtue signaling with “tolerance,” we also know well that their tolerance only extends to those who agree with their politics and policies. That couldn’t have been more clear on Monday night’s episode of The CW’s teen drama All American, which featured a song that preached tolerance for gays being “who they are” while subtly showing disdain for God and the Bible.

Transgender Who Sued Over ‘Bikini Wax Access’ Now Targeting Gynecologists

Moving on from suing female estheticians for refusing to wax male genitals, the world of gynecology is the next brave frontier for transgender woman and self-styled “LGBTQIA+ advocate” Jessica Yaniv.

According to Yaniv, transgender “rights” not only include female salon workers being forced to wax male genitals, even when they don’t offer the service, but also gynecologists being forced to take on transgender patients who do not have female reproductive organs.

On Monday night, the activist ranted via Twitter about allegedly being discriminated against and turned away from a gynecology office because Yaniv is transgender.

“Ok so [Fraser Health] needs to stop hiring employees who are discriminatory towards the #LGBTQ and use their bulls*** excuses on why they can’t see you even though you have a referral from the emergency department and live in the Fraser Health area!!” Yaniv posted to Twitter. “I want help and can’t get it!!”

In follow-up tweets, Yaniv elaborated: “So a gynaecologist office that I got referred to literally told me today that ‘we don’t serve transgender patients.’ And me, being me, I’m shocked.. and confused… and hurt.”

“Are they allowed to do that, legally?” Yaniv asked, signaling prospective legal action, particularly since the activist has shown to be extremely litigious in the past. “Isn’t that against the college practices?”

Yaniv, a biological male, does not have a uterus or ovaries and it’s unclear if the activist has had what is often dubbed in the trans world as “bottom surgery.” In other words, it’s unclear how a standard gynecologist could provide care to the activist. Also, it remains unclear if Yaniv actually was turned away and for what reason.

“Gynaecologists form a part of the multidisciplinary team who engage with transgender and non‐binary patients, either as part of the transition stage performing surgery or managing pre‐ or post‐transition gynaecological problems,” the activist added.

Yaniv made headlines earlier this year when the activist filed at least 15 human rights complaints against female estheticians in Canada for refusing to wax his male genitals, as noted by The Daily Wire.

However, in October, the Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms, a group that represented five of the women being targeted by Yaniv, announced that the activist’s cases against their clients had been tossed by the British Columbia Human Rights Tribunal. Moreover, Yaniv was instructed to pay $2,000 each to at least three of the women.

“The Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms (JCCF) is pleased to announce that the BC Human Rights Tribunal has ruled in favour of home estheticians’ right to refuse to handle male genitalia against their will,” a press release from JCCF said, as highlighted by The Post Millennial.

“According to the group, the tribunal’s decision said that ‘human rights legislation does not require a service provider to wax a type of genitals they are not trained for and have not consented to wax,’” The Daily Wire noted. “Moreover, it was noted that Yaniv ‘engaged in improper conduct’ and ‘filed complaints for improper purposes.’ The activist’s testimony, according to the ruling, was ‘disingenuous and self-serving,’ and Yaniv was ‘evasive and argumentative and contradicted herself.’”

“Wax My Balls” Trans Activist Jessica Yaniv Angry After Gynecologist Refuses to Treat Him Because He’s a Biological Male

First “Jessica” was on a mission to force female estheticians to wax his balls, now he’s furious that a gynecologist refused to treat him because he’s a biological male.

Jonathan “Jessica” Yaniv is a biological male so he does not have female reproductive organs, but he took to Twitter to express how “shocked, confused and hurt” he was that a gynecologist refused to treat him.

“So a gynaecologist office that I got referred to literally told me today that ‘we don’t serve transgender patients,’” Yaniv writes on Twitter. “And me, being me, I’m shocked.. and confused… and hurt. Are they allowed to do that, legally? Isn’t that against the college practices?” Yaniv said in a tweet Monday.

Yaniv kept complaining…

“Gynaecologists form a part of the multidisciplinary team who engage with transgender and non‐binary patients, either as part of the transition stage performing surgery or managing pre‐ or post‐transition gynaecological problems.”

The responses on Twitter were hilarious.

Yaniv, a Canadian, previously sued female estheticians who refused to give him a Brazilian wax on his balls — he lost the lawsuits so now he’s onto the next attention seeking mission.

Yaniv, a biological male was also caught sending sexually explicit messages to underage teenagers and even expressed how he would assist 10-year-old girls who needed help with their menstrual cycles.

He also applied for a permit to throw a topless pool party for underage girls and said the parents would be barred from attending.

Why is this perverted creep still walking around freely in society?

Report: Enough Guns Sold on Black Friday to Arm Every Marine

Americans underwent over 200,000 National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) background checks, portending the purchase of enough guns to arm every active duty Marine.

On December 1, Breitbart News reported that Black Friday 2019 witnessed the second-highest single day total for background checks since such checks became law in 1998.

USA Today reports a total of 202,465 background checks were performed November 29, 2019, a figure bested only by the 203,086 background checks performed on Black Friday 2017.

The Tribunist reports that there are just over 182,000 Marines on active duty or roughly 20,000 fewer Marines than background checks performed on Black Friday. They opine, “Americans bought enough guns on Black Friday to arm the Marine Corps.”

The catch with counting background checks as gun sales is that some of those checks could have been performed on concealed carry permit holders, as part of regular state-level oversight. This means 202,465 background checks may not translate into 202,465 gun sales.

On the other hand, background checks are performed on the buyer not the gun. And once the buy has passed a check he can buy multiple guns. Therefore, 202,465 background checks could actually represent 220,000 (or more) guns sold.

Alyssa Milano ‘F***ing’ Upset That Trump’s ‘Inappropriate,’ A Bad Role Model For Kids. Here’s Some ‘Inappropriate’ Stuff She’s Said.

On Monday, actress Alyssa Milano decided to weigh in on the outrage from the Left over President Trump’s speech in which he imitated former FBI lawyer Lisa Page during her affair with colleague Peter Strzok. Trump was speaking at a rally in October in Minneapolis when he mocked Page and Strzok, prompting Page to respond over the weekend in an interview and Trump to fire back on Twitter, “When Lisa Page, the lover of Peter Strzok, talks about being “crushed”, and how innocent she is, ask her to read Peter’s “Insurance Policy” text, to her, just in case Hillary loses. Also, why were the lovers text messages scrubbed after he left Mueller. Where are they Lisa?”

Milano tweeted, “It’s f***ing upsetting that I can’t allow my son to listen to our President because our President is inappropriate, misogynistic and unpresidential. So unfair to parents.”

Milano’s concern for other adults’ behavior affecting her child might carry more weight if she herself hadn’t exhibited some rather un-adult behavior. Some history:

September 2017: President Trump marked National Prayer Day by tweeting, “Remember, Sunday is National Prayer Day (by Presidential Proclamation)!”

Milano responded, “Remember, Sunday is National Asshole Day (by Presidential Proclamation)!”

September 2018, during the hearings for Justice Brett Kavanaugh, as The Daily Wire reported, “Milano paraded around a mob of anti-Kavanaugh activists on Wednesday and began pounding on the door of Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-MS) while shouting, ‘open the door, hear the stories!’ about women who survived sexual assault.”

November 2018: After border patrol agents were forced to fire tear gas to disperse a crowd of hundreds of migrants, President Trump tweeted, “Would be very SMART if Mexico would stop the Caravans long before they get to our Southern Border, or if originating countries would not let them form (it is a way they get certain people out of their country and dump in U.S. No longer). Dems created this problem. No crossing.”

Milano then issued her foul-mouthed response on Twitter, writing, “You tear-gassed women and children, asswipe! And on Thanksgiving weekend, you piece of shit, asshole, motherfucking, evil-creature-person!!”

And of course, there was Milano’s retelling of how she felt about two abortions she had before she had her children, enthusing on her podcast “Sorry Not Sorry,” “Fifteen years after that first love had fizzled, my life would be completely lacking all its great joys. I would never had been free to be myself — and that’s what this fight is all about: freedom.” She continued by asserting her reasons for having abortions were “real,” just as other women’s were, adding,  “They are ours — and they’re none of your f***ing business.”

Some comments on social media included Derek Hunter of The Daily Caller: You just dropped a “f***ing,” so I can’t imagine your son would be bothered by the fake outrage here that only started in the last couple of days even though it’s months old. Also, threaten to abort your son like you did your other kids, you’ll scare him out of the room.”

David Harsanyi of National Review: “Why not just turn the imaginary channel in this imaginary scenario?”

Actor-director Nick Searcy: “Does your eight year old stay in the room when his Mom types ‘fucking’ in a tweet?”
