Franklin Graham Sees Possible ‘Demonic’ Activity in Play in Ferocity of Opposition to Trump

Evangelist Franklin Graham suggested the resistance President Donald Trump has faced since taking office could be “demonic” in origin.

Graham made the assertion while appearing as a guest on “The Eric Metaxas Radio Show” in a segment posted online on Thursday.

“It’s a very bizarre situation to be living in a country where some people seem to exist to undermine the president of the United States,” Metaxas said. “It’s just a bizarre time for most Americans.”

“Well, I believe it’s almost a demonic power that is trying–” Graham began to respond when Metaxas interjected, “I would disagree.”

“It’s not almost demonic. You know and I know that at the heart it’s a spiritual battle,” the talk show host said.

TRENDING: 2nd Schiff Committee Staffer Linked to Think Tank Funded by Burisma: Report

Graham went on to list some of the positive things currently happening in the United States, seeming to suggest, based on the facts alone, that Trump shouldn’t be facing such hostility.

“If you look at what the president has done, just for our country, regardless of whether you’re a Republican or a Democrat, the unemployment is at the lowest in 70 years,” Graham said.

“More African-Americans are working, more Latinos are working, more Asians are working, more everybody is working. We have an economy that is just screaming forward. It’s incredible,” he added.

Do you think some of the resistance to Trump has been demonic?

Metaxas agreed, saying the U.S. economy was “dead in the water” before Trump was elected. “That’s a fact. That’s not our opinion.”

Graham explained how the church and the cause of advancing the gospel of Jesus Christ benefit when people are working and able to tithe and help fund mission work around the world.

“All of this is because Donald Trump said he was going to turn things around and make America great again,” the evangelist said, arguing Trump the businessman was just what the country needed.

Responding to Graham, Metaxas undercut the notion that Trump does not deserve support because he’s not Christian enough.

“It’s just a fascinating thing because people seem to devolve to a kind of moralistic Pharisaism,” the bestselling author said.

RELATED: Nikki Haley: God Has Brought ‘Lessons’ and ‘Change’ Through Trump’s Presidency

“Then they go on to cite how he’s the least Christian, and they go on and on and on,” Metaxas said. “And I think these people don’t even have a biblical view when it comes to that. If somebody doesn’t hold to our theology, that doesn’t mean they can’t be a great pilot, or a great doctor or dentist.”

Graham, who prayed at Trump’s inaugural ceremony in January 2017, responded, “I believe that Donald Trump believes in God. He believes in Jesus Christ.”

The Christian leader then suggested that the president’s theological understanding may not be too deep, saying Trump did not get “a whole lot of teaching” while living in New York City.

“He knows there’s two testaments, right?” Metaxas joked.

Graham and Metaxas received some blowback from media personalities for stating that Trump is facing demonic opposition.

Conservative blogger Erick Erickson — who was among the Never Trump ranks in 2016, but has stated he will vote for the president in 2020 — tweeted on Saturday, “If your Christianity requires a President to protect you and those who oppose that President are demonic, you aren’t actually practicing Christianity. You’re worshiping idols.”

Metaxas responded, “No one called the people opposing Trump ‘demonic’. There can be spiritual forces involved w/o the people themselves being ‘demonic’! And you can like a prez w/o agreeing w/everything he ever said or did. That’s hardly ‘worshiping’ him as an idol. This is getting icky. #chillpill.”

In a piece for The Atlantic, Peter Wehner, a senior fellow with the Ethics and Public Policy Center, berated Metaxas and Graham as “theologically distorted and confused.”

“Just ask yourself where this game ends. Do demonic powers explain opposition to all politicians supported by Graham and Metaxas, or to Trump alone? Would they argue that all Christians (and non-Christians) who oppose Trump are under the influence of Satan?” Wehner asked.

Perhaps in response to the whole controversy, Graham tweeted a well-known scriptural passage regarding the spiritual battle Christians face.

“‘Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm.’ (Ephesians 6:13),” Graham wrote.

In an interview with The Western Journal this summer, Graham gave Trump high marks for his handling of the presidency to date.

“I think he has honored his commitments to the faith-based community,” Graham said. “He is pro-life, [the] first president really in my lifetime that has been this vocal about life. I certainly appreciate that about him.”

“He’s fulfilled his promise as it relates to conservative judges,” he said. “He’s put two Supreme Court justices so far on the bench that are conservative. He’s appointed a number at lower courts.”

The Christian leader also cited Trump’s economic record and destruction of the ISIS caliphate.

“All this he has done without a fully supportive Republican majority. He, of course, has been able to do it with the relentless attacks of the Democrats,” Graham said. “He may go down in history as one of the best presidents we’ve had.”

Donald Trump Donates Third-Quarter Salary to Help Fight Opioid Crisis

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump is donating his third-quarter salary to help tackle the nation’s opioid epidemic.

A White House official says Trump has given the $100,000 he would be paid in the quarter to the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Health, which oversees federal public health offices and programs, including the surgeon general’s office.

The White House says the funds are being earmarked “to continue the ongoing fight against the opioid crisis.”

Trump has made tackling the misuse of opioids an administration priority. More than 70,000 Americans died in 2017 from drug overdoses, the bulk of them involving opioids.

Trump is required to be paid, but he has pledged to donate his salary while in office to worthy causes. Trump donated his second-quarter salary to the surgeon general’s office.

Video of 6-Foot-2, 220-Pound Transgender Crushing Female Athletes Shows How Unfair Trans Movement Is to Women

More than familiar with controversy, the animated adult comedy “South Park” is catching heavy flak once again this season — this time for the airing of an episode poking fun at the transgender movement.

Playing on the absurdity of a recent cultural push to include transgender women — better known as men — into women’s athletics, creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone pulled out all the stops with their comically outlandish depiction of a hulking, Randy Savage-esque transgender woman’s attempt to “kick some f—ing a–” in a women’s strength competition.

WARNING: The following video contains vulgar language that some viewers may find offensive.

The proverbial salting of open wounds did not stop there, however, with the episode also happening to coincide with the first day of “Transgender Awareness Week,” according to LGBT athletics blog Outsports.

Yet, despite the expectedly ridiculous nature of the episode, and the incessant whining of the LGBT community in response, “South Park” seems to have accomplished the goal of any good satire: to make people reflect on the culture.

TRENDING: Video Captures Rashida Tlaib Asking Police Chief To Only Hire African-Americans for a Particular Job

This episode has done just that, effectively bringing an overwhelming amount of social media attention to an undeniable trend that has seen hulking transgender women dominating women’s sporting events in recent years.

And this trend finds no better example than that of Hannah Mouncey — whose story made waves for the second time in just over a year in light of “South Park’s” supposedly “transphobic” romp.

Another male athlete claiming female “gender identity,” Mouncey made international headlines last fall when he withdrew his professional draft nomination for the women’s Australian Football League because of perceived discrimination, according to The Independent.

Standing 6 feet 2 inches tall and weighing in at approximately 220 pounds, Mouncey, who had competed on the men’s national team for handball in 2016, was crowned a hero by the LGBT community for attacking the AFL’s “Gender Diversity Policy” — a policy he claimed was too restrictive.

Apparently, it’s just too much to ask that a man who wants to beat up on women athletically at least demonstrate two years of balanced female hormone levels.

Who could imagine a restriction so draconian?

It isn’t as though the scientific literature has shown time and again that even after hormone replacement therapy, transgender women still have a significant athletic advantage over biological women as a result of their bone and muscle structure.

Oh, wait. Yes, it has.

RELATED: Report of Trans Teen’s ‘Frankenstein Hack Job’ Should Be Required Reading Before Surgery

But in all seriousness folks, just watch Mouncey’s tale of the tape.

The video above just about says it all.

This “woman” towers over each and every girl on the court.

Does this look fair to you?

Clip after clip shows Mouncey absolutely manhandling his competition, easily pushing them out of the way and, at times, outright steamrolling over them.

It doesn’t take an expert in anatomy and physiology to recognize that no matter how much estrogen you pump into a post-pubic male — no matter how much a man “feels like” a woman — there are simple biological realities that we cannot ignore.

But maybe it does take a visual explanation.

Maybe headline after headline demonstrating the dominance of transgenders in women’s weightlifting, track and field, mixed martial arts and cycling simply wasn’t going to cut it.

Maybe what people needed was a demonstrably farcical cartoon representation to recognize that the reality of the subject is just as laughably absurd.

Because the truth is, the move to include transgenders in women’s sports is already a caricature of itself.

WATCH: After No Teams Call Him, Kaepernick Posts Defiant Message To League

It’s been over a week since Colin Kaepernick decided to ditch a special tryout put on by the NFL to give the former 49ers quarterback his best shot yet at getting back in the league and, unsurprisingly, none of the 32 teams have reached out to him. Kaepernick, meanwhile, is using footage taken by his team from his far less-attended, self-conducted “tryout” at an Atlanta high school to declare that he’s still “ready” and accuse the league of “denying” him.

On Monday, the quarterback-turned-social justice activist posted some highlights from his unofficial re-audition for the league and insisted that — despite having failed to show up at the NFL-organized workout, blaming a waiver and lack of media access, and defiantly accusing the league of “running” from him — he remains “ready” to jump back in.

“A huge thank you to all the people that made this happen in ATL,” Kaepernick tweeted along with the self-promotional video. “From our receivers , , , — my trainer Josh Hidalgo, the educators at Charles Drew HS & so many more. Can’t thank everyone enough. We stay ready.”

“I’ve been ready for three years. I’ve been denied for three years,” Kaepernick says in the self-promo video.

As reported by CBS News, the NFL’s special workout for Kaepernick on Nov. 16 was originally set to begin at 3 p.m. at the Atlanta Falcons’ practice facility in Flowery Branch, but “at 2:30, representatives for the free agent quarterback informed the league that Kaepernick would instead be conducting the workout at 4 p.m. at Drew High School in Riverdale, Georgia.”

The NFL event Kaepernick skipped reportedly included representatives from some 25 of the league’s 32 teams waiting to watch him perform. At the high school event, which drew far fewer scouts, Kaepernick initially wore a shirt invoking slavery and ended the pseudo-tryout by accusing the league of “running” from him.

“I’ve been ready for three years. I’ve been denied for three years,” Kaepernick declared. “We all know why I came out here today and showed it today in front of everybody. We have nothing to hide, so we’re waiting for the 32 owners, 32 teams, Roger Goodell, all of them to stop running. To stop running from the truth. To stop running from the people.”

Kaepernick and his supporters have attempted to blame the NFL for the debacle, accusing the league of presenting him with a waiver that was somehow “unacceptable.” But ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith, who supported Kaepernick until this latest stunt, pointed out on his show last week that a close examination of the original waiver Kaepernick signed for the league back in 2011 and the one the league asked him to sign for the event had only two minor differences that didn’t warrant refusal to participate in the workout.

Smith has been one of the most vocal of the critics of Kaepernick’s tryout stunt, stating that Kaepernick has now revealed that he wants to play “martyr” more than he wants to play in the league.

“Colin Kaepernick wants to change the venue; Colin Kaepernick wants his own receivers; Colin Kaepernick wants to video things himself; Colin Kaepernick wants the media,” said Smith shortly after the workout fiasco. “This Colin Kaepernick, media can’t find him! He ain’t done no interviews; he ain’t talked to nobody; media can’t find him – but he wants the media available now. You see? You see? He don’t want to play; he wants to be a martyr. But guess what? It ain’t working this time.”

Broadcast Networks Refuse to Cover Record-High Stock Market

Apparently ABC, CBS, and NBC are so reluctant to give President Trump a win that they’re scared of reporting good news that only vaguely involves him — like the stock market reaching a record high. On Monday, none of the three broadcast networks spared even a second of airtime to mention this development in their evening newscasts.

REPORT: DNC Hack Chalupa Who Is Caught Up in Ukraine-Gate – Worked with US Hackers who Interfered in 2016 Election

Guest post by Lee Stranahan

The involvement of Democratic National Committee operative Alexandra Chalupa working with the Obama administration and unknown “American hackers” to interfere in the 2016 election appears to be confirmed.

Chalupa can thank  her sister, a Democratic activist Andrea Chalupa, for a number of tweets following the election that confirm Alexandra’s involvement with the nefarious hackers.

As Gateway Pundit reported exclusively last week, DNC operative Alexandra Chalupa made a stunning admission the day after the 2016 election where the American people chose Donald Trump as their next President.  Chalupa wrote a Facebook post confessing that she was part of part of the operation by the Obama DOJ and DHS working with unknown “hackers.” Alexandra Chalupa admitted:

Homeland Security / DOJ teamed up with a group that is part of Anonymous based in Washington, DC called “The Protectors.“

As Gateway Pundit also reported, Alexandra’s Democrat activist sister Andrea Chalupa repeated the claim that that “hackers” were “protecting” voters from Russia, posting a tweet that said:

My sister led Trump/Russia research at DNC. US hackers protecting voting systems believe Russia hacked vote tallies .

That tweet was part of a multi-day post election rant by Andrea Chalupa that would set the tone for the next two years: that Donald Trump had won due to “Russians.”

The Chalupa sisters allegations that Russian hackers had handed the election to President Trump seem especially bizarre given that the multi-million dollar Mueller probe flop didn’t even attempt to claim that Russians had hacked voting systems.

However, a look at other tweets posted by Andrea Chalupa around the same time period reveal that she repeatedly made claims that an “Anonymous” connected hacking group were working directly with the Obama administration.

If Alexandra and Andrea Chalupa’s claims are in any way true, they raise serious national security and election integrity concerns.

Not only do the Chalupa admissions raise obvious questions about who the “hackers” are that were working with the DOJ, but they require asking why the DOJ would be working with unknown and potentially criminal outsiders?

Additionally, if such an operation took place, why were these hackers working with the DOJ and DHS and telling partisan Democrats about it in real time?

And why did those Democrats talk openly about that operation, with apparent no fear of the legal consequences?

Add to that, Alexandra’s connection to CIA analyst Eric Ciaramella, who many believe is the fake “whistleblower” that helped set the Ukraine-Gate hoax into action and you have the makings of a serious scandal that in sane world would be investigated immediately.

At about 8:30 pm Eastern Time on November 10th, 2016 Andrea Chalupa states very clearly that hackers from Anonymous were not only inexplicably working with Obama’s Department of Justice on Election Day, but that these hackers were in contact with her sister Alexandra Chalupa, a longtime DNC operative.

Andrea wrote:

.@inthehands @slavapestov All election day Anonymous hackers working w/DOJ updated my sister: they were at war w/RU hackers in our systems

However, even Andrea Chalupa’s mob of crazed anti-Trump followers found her claims impossible to believe. A number of them pushed back on how completely implausible her claims of Trump winning the election because of Russian hacking were.

Undeterred by evidence or logic, further in the same thread Andrea quotes “American hackers” who she says were promoting the now-debunked conspiracy theory about Russians hacking the election, tweeting:

.@inthehands @slavapestov Russian hackers entered US voting systems in summer.US hackers believe they downloaded malware to influence count.

Later the same night, responding to a Twitter comment by pollster Frank, Andrea Chalupa appears to be quoting information she got from the ”Anonymous hackers” she says are working with the DOJ:

Anonymous hackers protecting state systems w/DOJ from Russian hackers believe vote tallies falsified by malware. Reason why exit polls off:

In a tweet also posted on November 10th, Andrea Chalupa repeated the claim that Anonymous was working with Obama’s Department of Justice, saying:

.@ZaidJilani According to Anonymous hackers working w/DOJ to protect voting systems,Russian hackers planted malware across states months ago

These repeated admissions by the Chalupa sisters that the Obama administration was working with an unknown group of “hackers” who were informing Hillary Clinton campaign operatives of their progress, represent a story that both the mainstream media and their comrades in the Democrat party have buried…so far.

However, as the name Chalupa is becoming known to the public and Congress as key figures in the Democrats 2016 election interference, here’s hoping that their confessions will be investigated by Congress and the Trump Department of Justice.

Over 60 Doctors Urgently Petition UK Home Secretary Over Julian Assange’s Physical Health, Warn He May Die

Over 60 medical doctors have issued an open letter to UK Home Secretary Priti Patel calling for urgent action to protect the life of imprisoned WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.

The doctors fear that he may not survive unless he is moved from Belmarsh Prison to an actual hospital where he can receive proper treatment.

“Were such urgent assessment and treatment not to take place, we have real concerns, on the evidence currently available, that Mr. Assange could die in prison. The medical situation is thereby urgent. There is no time to lose,” the letter states.

Australian doctor Lissa Johnson PhD, Clinical Psychologist, warned that the possibility that he could die is very grave.

“Given the rapid decline of his health in Belmarsh Prison, Julian Assange must immediately be transferred to a university teaching hospital for appropriate and specialized medical care. If the UK Government fails to heed doctors’ advice by urgently arranging such a transfer on medical grounds, there is a very real possibility that Mr. Assange may die,” Johnson said in a statement provided to the Gateway Pundit. “As it stands, serious questions surround not only the health impacts of Mr. Assange’s detention conditions but his medical fitness to stand trial and prepare his defense. Independent specialist medical assessment is therefore needed to determine whether Julian Assange is medically fit for any of his pending legal proceedings.”

“Consistent with its commitment to human rights and rule of law, the UK Government must heed the urgent warning of medical professionals from around the world, and transfer Julian Assange to an appropriately specialized and expert hospital setting, before it’s too late,” she continued. “Due to the climate of intimidation and fear surrounding Julian Assange, a number of doctors have insisted on anonymity before examining Julian Assange over the years, fearful of negative consequences to their reputations and careers.”

“The signatories to this open letter refuse to be silenced and are standing openly alongside the numerous medical and human rights authorities who have called, repeatedly and urgently, for the dangerous medical neglect of Julian Assange to end.”

Assange is currently being held in Belmarsh Prison awaiting an extradition trial. The United States has an 18-count indictment against him in the Eastern District of Virginia. They accuse him of soliciting and publishing classified information and conspiring with former Army intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning to crack a Defense Department computer password.

Prior to his arrest, Assange spent nearly seven years in the Ecuadorian Embassy in London, unable to receive proper medical treatment, and the lack of sunshine and fresh air taking a toll on his system. Doctors who visited him there wrote an article for the Guardian pleading for him to be allowed to go to the hospital for treatment, headlining their account “We examined Julian Assange, and he badly needs care — but he can’t get it.”

The doctors wrote, “experience tells us that the prolonged uncertainty of indefinite detention inflicts profound psychological and physical trauma above and beyond the expected stressors of incarceration. These can include severe anxiety, pathological levels of stress, dissociation, depression, suicidal thoughts, post-traumatic stress disorder and chronic pain, among others.”

In June, the UN issued a scathing report in which Nils Melzer, the UN Special Rapporteur on torture said that Assange has been exposed to psychological torture and warned that the award-winning publisher could face the death penalty if he is extradited to the United States.

Melzer visited Assange along with two medical experts who specialize in examining potential torture victims on May 9.

“I am particularly alarmed at the recent announcement by the US Department of Justice of 17 new charges against Mr. Assange under the Espionage Act, which currently carry up to 175 years in prison. This may well result in a life sentence without parole, or possibly even the death penalty, if further charges were to be added in the future,” Melzer continued.

Melzer also wrote that “there has been a relentless and unrestrained campaign of public mobbing, intimidation and defamation against Mr. Assange, not only in the United States, but also in the United Kingdom, Sweden and, more recently, Ecuador.”

“In the course of the past nine years, Mr. Assange has been exposed to persistent, progressively severe abuse ranging from systematic judicial persecution and arbitrary confinement in the Ecuadorian embassy, to his oppressive isolation, harassment and surveillance inside the embassy, and from deliberate collective ridicule, insults and humiliation, to open instigation of violence and even repeated calls for his assassination.”

Speaking about the visit that he and the medical professionals had with Assange earlier that month, Melzer said that it was obvious that his health had been seriously impacted by the “extremely hostile and arbitrary environment he has been exposed to for many years.”

“Most importantly, in addition to physical ailments, Mr. Assange showed all symptoms typical for prolonged exposure to psychological torture, including extreme stress, chronic anxiety and intense psychological trauma,” the UN report said.

“The evidence is overwhelming and clear,” the findings continued “Mr. Assange has been deliberately exposed, for a period of several years, to progressively severe forms of cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment, the cumulative effects of which can only be described as psychological torture.”

The report concluded with a condemnation of the actions of these governments in working to deliberately abuse him.

“In 20 years of work with victims of war, violence and political persecution I have never seen a group of democratic States ganging up to deliberately isolate, demonise and abuse a single individual for such a long time and with so little regard for human dignity and the rule of law,” Melzer said. “The collective persecution of Julian Assange must end here and now!”

Prior to the release of the UN report, the publisher’s mother, Christine Assange tweeted that the “UK Gov is unlawfully slowly killing my son!”

“They made him very ill by refusing him ANY access to life sustaining fresh air, exercise, sun/VitD or proper medical care for 6 YEARS of illegal Embassy detention,” she tweeted at the United Nations Twitter account. “Then against ALL medical advice threw him into a prison cell.”

Not one single NFL team has reached out to quarterback Colin Kapernick in the week since his much-publicized workout in Georgia, according to a new report.

The report by Adam Schefter of ESPN cites “league sources” as saying “no teams have reached out to work him out, visit with him or sign him.”

Kaepernick held the workout Nov. 16 to show his fitness to return to the NFL. However, it became fodder for more controversy. The workout was originally scheduled at an Atlanta Falcons practice facility, then moved to a high school an hour away from the initial site only half an hour before it was to begin, according to Sports Illustrated.

The change was cited as a reason that instead of 25 teams expected to send representatives to the workout, far fewer showed up. The Detroit Lions, Kansas City Chiefs, New York Jets, Philadelphia Eagles, San Francisco 49ers, Tennessee Titans and Washington Redskins sent representatives, according to CBS.

To remedy that, Kaepernick’s team sent a video of the workout to the teams that did not attend, ESPN reported.

But, as Schefter wrote, “nothing has materialized, and nothing is expected to at this time.” He later added that “the chances are bleak that a team will step forward and sign him.”

Earlier in the week, Mark Geragos, Kaepernick’s attorney, had hinted that something might be stirring for Kaepernick, who last played in the 2016 season, according to the New York Post.

Speaking on The Adam Carolla Podcast, Geragos said two teams had shown interest.

“One who is legitimately in need of a quarterback who had a very poor showing on Sunday and has got an owner that I don’t think gives a sh-t,” he said.

Kaepernick has claimed that he is being frozen out by the NFL for his national anthem protests.

In a commentary piece in The New York Times, writer Ta-Nehisi Coates supported the former quarterback and indicted everyone from President Donald Trump to the NFL owners for the fact that no one will sign the 32-year-old Kaepernick.

“The NFL is revered in this country as a paragon of patriotism and chivalry, a sacred trust controlled by some of the wealthiest men and women in America. For the past three years, this sacred trust has executed, with brutal efficiency, the cancellation of Colin Kaepernick. This is curious given the NFL.’s moral libertinism; the league has, at various points, been a home for domestic abusers, child abusers and open racists,” Coates wrote.

Coates then criticized Trump, who was an outspoken critic of NFL players’ refusal to stand for the national anthem.

RELATED: Report: Nike To Roll Out Signature Kaepernick Shoe Soon

Coates compared Trump’s criticism to the president’s attacks on Hillary Clinton and Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota.

“Perhaps it is shocking for some to see the president of the United States endorse the cancellation of a pro football player, like he endorsed the cancellation of Hillary Clinton (‘Lock her up’), and of Ilhan Omar (‘Send her back’). But it is precisely this kind of capricious and biased use of institutional power that has birthed the cancel culture practiced by campus protesters and online. But whereas the wrongdoing of elite institutions was once hidden from public view, in the era of Donald Trump it is all there to be seen,” he wrote.

Coates wrote that the controversy of Kaepernick’s workout “helped obscure this central fact — a multibillion-dollar monopoly is, at this very hour, denying a worker the right to ply his trade and lying about doing so.”

Trump Flips Another Federal Court to Majority GOP Appointees

As House Democrats continued their impeachment push, President Donald Trump scored yet another victory toward reshaping the federal judiciary—flipping a third appeals court to a majority of Republican-president nominees.

Moreover, as the House engaged in partisan bickering, the Senate voted to confirm Barbara Lagoa to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit in Atlanta on a bipartisan vote of 80-to-15 on Wednesday. The circuit—which handles cases out of Alabama, Florida, and Georgia—now has a 7-to-5 majority of Republican appointees.

Trump nominated Lagoa, then a Florida Supreme Court justice, in September.

Since taking office in January 2017, Trump also has been able to change the makeup of the Manhattan, New York-based U.S. Court of Appeals for the 2nd Circuit to a 7-to-6 Republican-appointee majority and the Philadelphia-based U.S. Court of Appeals for the 3rd Circuit to an 8-to-6 majority of appointees of Republican presidents.

“With the confirmation of Judge Barbara Lagoa to the [11th] Circuit, President Trump has now transformed three of the nation’s federal appellate courts from Democrat-appointed majorities to Republican-appointed majorities. This is a major achievement for his presidency,” Carrie Severino, chief counsel and policy director for the Judicial Crisis Network, tweeted after the confirmation.

Trump has won 46 appeals court confirmations by the Senate, according to The Heritage Foundation Judicial Tracker, in just under three years in office. That’s double that of his predecessor, President Barack Obama, who had 23 appeals court judges confirmed during his eight years in office.

Since appeals courts decide the overwhelming majority of court cases, because the Supreme Court can only handle a limited number of cases each year, these confirmations are highly important.

“This success—along with the record number of federal appellate judges President Trump has appointed to date—is a testament to the tangible impact the president has had in reshaping the federal judiciary with constitutionalist judges who are committed to the rule of law,” Severino added.

That’s no guarantee of outcomes in cases, but Democratic presidents’ judicial appointees tend to make more liberal decisions, while Republican presidents’ court picks tend to make more conservative legal rulings.

Though Trump has been prolific in securing judicial nominees, federal appeals courts are still lopsided in favor of Democratic appointees. When Trump took office, only four of the 13 appeals courts had a majority of Republican appointees. Now seven have majority-Republican appointees.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis named Lagoa to the state’s high court after she previously served as a state appeals court judge and before that as an assistant U.S. attorney. She was also the chairwoman of the Florida Judicial Ethics Advisory Committee from 2015 to 2016.

The judge also has a personal story that impresses Severino.

“Lagoa’s parents fled Castro’s Cuba, and their experience gave her a deep and abiding respect for the rule of law,” Severino tweeted. “The first Cuban-American woman to sit on the [11th] Circuit, Judge Lagoa will solidify the follow-the-law jurisprudence exemplified by the court’s new majority.”

Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., also a Cuban-American, praised the confirmation.

“I thank Justice Lagoa for her years of service in both the federal and Florida state justice systems, including as a justice on the Supreme Court of Florida,” Rubio said in a statement. “I am confident Justice Lagoa’s experience will serve her well as she begins the next chapter of her service to our nation as a U.S. circuit judge for the [11th] Circuit.”

5 Things to Know About Rep. Elise Stefanik as GOP Lawmaker Fights Democrats on Impeachment

Few would have predicted that one of President Donald Trump’s strongest defenders in the House impeachment hearings would be a Republican congresswoman who on occasion has been critical of him.

Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., has attracted public attention for her spirited defense of the president and her status as the only GOP woman on the House Intelligence Committee.

Those attributes came to the fore during the impeachment inquiry as Stefanik asked questions of Marie Yovanovich, a former ambassador to Ukraine. Skirting procedural rules, the committee’s ranking member, Rep. Devin Nunes, R-Calif., tried to yield a portion of his time for asking questions to Stefanik.

When the committee’s chairman, Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif.,  repeatedly interrupted Stefanik and cut her off, Trump’s defenders could claim that sexist Democrats in the hearing had silenced a woman and prevented Republicans from asking questions.

Here are five things to know about Stefanik:

1. When elected to Congress, she was the youngest woman ever to win.

In a landslide victory over Democratic candidate Aaron Woolf in 2014, Stefanik became, at age 30, the youngest woman ever elected to Congress, as well as the first Republican candidate to win her district in 21 years. She won 53 percent of the vote to 32.5 percent for Woolf and 10.6 percent for a Green Party candidate. (Another New Yorker, Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, in November 2018 broke Stefanik’s record when she was elected at age 29.)

In her 2014 campaign, Stefanik worked hard to win the trust and confidence of voters, driving more than 100,000 miles through upstate New York’s 21st Congressional District. The district covers 12 counties, stretching north to the Canadian border and east to the border with Vermont.

She said that voters told her she was too young to run for office, but she won the election despite their doubts.

Even then, her troubles weren’t over. Stefanik was so much younger than the average member of Congress that the Capitol Police initially stopped her when she tried to enter the building. They didn’t believe she was a member of Congress.

2. She has voted against Trump and conservatives in the past.

Now 35 and in her third term, Stefanik has not shied away from asking questions that helped Trump in the impeachment hearings, but she also voted against one of his most important legislative priorities.

She was one of only 12 House Republicans to vote against the president’s Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. Four of the others who voted against it also were from New York. The measure became law without their support.

According to Albany, New York’s Times Union newspaper, Stefanik voted against the act because limitations on a federal tax deduction for high state and local taxes meant 13% of New Yorkers would face a tax hike.

She also was one of just eight Republicans who voted in May in favor of the Equality Act, which would extend Civil Rights Act protections on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity. The Equality Act’s provisions would harm women by dismantling sex-specific sports and locker rooms, among other negative effects, according to The Heritage Foundation. It passed the Democrat-controlled House, but is unlikely to get a vote in the Republican-controlled Senate.

According to The Hill, Stefanik supports the act because it ensures protections in “employment, housing, credit access, education, public spaces and services, federally funded programs and jury service” for gays and transgender individuals.

3. Her parents run a successful plywood business.

Stefanik’s parents own and operate Premium Plywood Products in Guilderland Center, New York. After working on Mitt Romney’s 2012 Republican presidential campaign, she worked for her parents’ business in sales and marketing.

In 2014, she pivoted from plywood to politics in her campaign for Congress.

4. A graduate of Harvard, she wrote op-eds for The Harvard Crimson.

At Harvard, Stefanik gained valuable political experience, serving as vice president of Harvard’s Institute of Politics before graduating with a degree in government.

While at Harvard, Stefanik wrote eight articles for The Harvard Crimson, the college’s famed newspaper. By senior year, she was in charge of editing the editorial pieces. Her editorial topics ranged from criticizing leftists for disrupting a panel discussion on careers in counterterrorism to commenting on love’s “capriciousness and involuntary nature.”

Stefanik’s understanding of love seems to have served her well. She married her husband, Matthew Manda, in August 2017 in Saratoga, New York. With appropriate capriciousness, he proposed to her using a ring secured in its box with dental floss, Stefanik told the Glens Falls Chronicle. Manda’s father is a dentist.

5. She opposed a proposed New York City ban on flavored milk.

Not cowed by New York Mayor Bill de Blasio’s proposed ban on flavored milk in the city’s public schools, she signed an open letter saying she “strongly opposed” it.

She attacked the proposed ban on chocolate milk as “a serious disservice to North Country dairy farmers” that was “reckless and irresponsible.”
