2 Senators Call For Investigation Into Big Tech’s Censorship

Two of the country’s staunchest big tech critics are asking the Federal Trade Commission to investigate social media companies’ perceived censorship practices.

Facebook, Google, and Twitter exercise lots of influence on Americans and they also use their tools to censor some content while amplifying others, Sens. Ted Cruz of Texas and Josh Hawley of Missouri wrote in a letter Monday to the Federal Trade Commission. They are asking the agency to open a public probe into the impact such policies have on people.

“Companies that are this big and that have the potential to threaten democracy this much should not be allowed to curate content entirely without any transparency,” they wrote. “These companies can greatly influence democratic outcomes, yet they have not accountability to voters.”

They added: “They are not even accountable to their own customers because nobody knows how these companies curate content.” Cruz and Hawley are two of the biggest Republican critics of Google and Facebook, both of which are consistently accused of discriminating against conservative content.

Hawley, for his part, introduced the Ending Support for Internet Censorship Act in June that aims to amend Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, which gives online companies immunity only if they can show they are politically neutral. Section 230 was passed in 1996, when the internet was in its infancy.

Other Republicans are taking a more critical stance against big tech companies as well. Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, for one, is dinging Google for not doing enough to protect children.

“Things would change tomorrow if you could get sued,” Graham said during a congressional hearing on July 9 dealing with online dangers to kids. YouTube is under pressure to turn off its recommendation systems for videos featuring kids after reports showed potential predators were abusing the feature.

Donald Trump Triples Down: ‘If You’re Not Happy Here, Then You Can Leave’

President Donald Trump is not backing down from calling on progressive Congresswomen critical of the U.S. to move out of the country, saying in a speech Monday, “If you’re not happy here, then you can leave.”

“If you’re not happy here, then you can leave,” President Trump said, prompting cheers from the audience. “As far as I’m concerned, if you hate our country, if you’re not happy here, you can leave.”

“And that’s what I say all the time, that’s what I said in a tweet, which I guess, some people think is controversial,” the president continued. “A lot of people love it, by the way.”

“But if you’re happy in the U.S., if you’re complaining all the time, very simply you can leave, you can leave right now. Come back if you want, don’t come back, that’s okay too. But if you’re not happy, you can leave,” he added.
The president appears to have been once again referencing Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), Ilhan Omar (D-MN), Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) and Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-MA).

Two Former Senior Government Officials Chose To Believe A Wild Conspiracy Theory Before Agreeing Iran Bombed Oil Tankers

Occam’s razor is the principle that the simplest explanation is usually the correct one. A common example states that if you hear hoof beats in the wild, think horses, not zebras (unless you live in Africa, obviously).

But Trump Derangement Syndrome, or former President Barack Obama’s insistence that America’s enemies were not actually enemies and its friends were not actually its friends, seems to be crushing the judgment of some who know better.

At Politico, two former national security officials – who each worked under Democrat presidents – admit that after learning oil tankers in the Persian Gulf were bombed a couple weeks ago, they decided to believe wild conspiracy theories rather than the simple, evidence-based answer: That Iran did it.

Former State Department counterterrorism coordinator (during Obama’s first term) Daniel Benjamin and former National Security senior director Steven Simon (who served under President Bill Clinton and Obama) wrote the following opening when discussing the future of war:

Who really bombed the oil tankers in the Persian Gulf two weeks ago? Was it Iran, as the Trump administration assured us? Or was it Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates or Israel—or some combination of the three?

Here’s a confession from two former senior government officials: For days after the attacks, we weren’t sure. Both of us believed in all sincerity there was a good chance these actions were part of a false flag operation, an effort by outsiders to trigger a war between the United States and Iran. Even the film of Iranians hauling in an unexploded limpet mine from near the side of tanker, we reasoned, might be a fabrication—deep fake footage just like the clip of Nancy Pelosi staggering around drunk.

So, instead of listening to the U.S. government’s intelligence or accepting the video evidence, these two concocted a wild theory that this was an Alex Jones-style false flag conspiracy and that the video was faked to accuse Iran. They bring up the video of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) appearing to sound drunk as an example of a “deep fake.”

It’s not. Someone simply slowed down her speech and altered her voice levels to give the impression she was drunk or ill. A “deep fake” requires much more than simple manipulation (that has been available for decades). A deep fake video requires much more, as this phony Obama video shows.

Benjamin and Simon embarrass themselves further by pointing out their “30 years of government service and almost 20 more as think tankers” right after admitting their willful ignorance. They even acknowledge they went to Alex Jones levels of conspiracy. Later in the article, they make it clear they went out of their way to absolve Iran because they are anti-Trump:

All of this would be challenging enough in the best of times. What makes the current situation so ominous is that the technology of confusion is being augmented by the human-generated falsehoods of Donald Trump. The relentless dishonesty of the commander-in-chief is bound to undercut belief in the “official version” coming out of Washington—as we found out with the tanker attacks—and it also has a disorienting effect. Even for people who are well grounded in reality and not susceptible to conspiracy thinking, it is increasingly difficult to find one’s way toward a reasonable understanding of current events.

As if Obama never lied. Sure, the fact checkers mostly ignored his lies, but if they had focused on him with as much hostility as they do Trump, things would have been different.

Could war be started with deep-fake videos? Maybe in the future, but we’re not there yet. But that’s not enough for the people who worked in an administration that supported Iran over our actual allies in the Middle East.

Nike ‘Betsy Ross’ Shoes Garner $15,200 Bid on eBay

Nike’s Betsy Ross-themed athletic shoes, which the company pulled before their Fourth of July debut, have garnered a $15,200 bid on eBay.

The sports giant decided not to sell the shoes after former NFL player Colin Kaepernick objected because he said they were offensive, symbolizing a time when slavery existed in the United States.

“While the company’s decision sparked a cultural discussion about the significance of the flag and the history of the country, buyers rushed to purchase the shoes, and the price quickly ticked upward,” Newsweek reported. “A pair of the ‘Betsy Ross’ sneakers reportedly sold for $2,500 on e-commerce website StockX after Nike announced that it would be pulling the shoe.”

The eBay website showed on Saturday 101 bids with a $15,200 top offer posted.

“I have never seen so many watchers or views, and it has to be the hottest item on eBay right now,” Isaiah Miller, the man selling the shoes, said in an email to Newsweek. “Call it patriotism, the need to have something you have been told you can’t have, or just a desire for shoe or antique collectors (these could be historical one day), they are paying amazing amounts.”  

Miller, 21, told Newsweek he is an entrepreneur and said that his primary business effort is auctioning goods on eBay. 

He said he bought the pair of shoes from a woman because the “seller was getting a lot of harassment and threats, and so she decided to just sell them to me.”

The StockX website said it had halted the resale on its website because it “does not align with our value system,” Newsweek reported.

Ross, who ran a flag-making and upholstery business in the 1700s, is credited with producing the iconic American flag with red and white stripes and 13 stars for the 13 colonies.

Democrat Congresswoman Secretly Sending Staff to Mexico to Coach Migrants on How to Exploit Asylum Loopholes

The Democrats are doing everything they can to secure the illegal alien vote.

Rep. Veronica Escobar (D-TX) is secretly sending staff to Mexico to coach asylum-seekers on how to exploit loopholes under the “remain in Mexico” policy by telling the migrants to pretend that they can’t speak Spanish.

According to a Customs and Border Protection agent, Rep. Escobar’s team has attempted to conduct interviews with 6,000 migrants who were returned last month from El Paso to Mexico.

Under the “remain in Mexico” asylum policy, anyone returned must be fluent in Spanish because they have to live in Mexico for up to 5 years until a US judge makes a decision on their asylum claim.

“What we’re hearing from management is that they’re attempting to return people, and the story was changed in Mexico, where a person who understood Spanish before now doesn’t understand — where a person who didn’t have any health issues before now has health issues,” the union representative said, according to the Washington Examiner.

The Washington Examiner reported:

A Democratic congresswoman is sending staff to Mexico’s northern border town of Ciudad Juárez to find migrants returned from El Paso, Texas, under the “remain in Mexico” policy, then coaching them to pretend they cannot speak Spanish to exploit a loophole letting them to return to the U.S.

The National Border Patrol Council’s El Paso chapter and several Customs and Border Protection personnel told the Washington Examiner aides to Rep. Veronica Escobar, who took over 2020 Democratic presidential candidate Beto O’Rourke’s district, and the local Catholic diocese have interviewed thousands of migrants in Juarez over the past few weeks to find cases where Department of Homeland Security officials may have wrongly returned people.

“What we believe is happening is Veronica Escobar’s office is going … to basically second-guess and obstruct work already done by the Border Patrol,” said one senior union official, who shared evidence with the Washington Examiner from concerned CBP managers and rank-and-file members. Those documents have been held to protect identities.

Democrat lawmakers no longer work for American taxpayers. Their first and only priority is to make sure illegal aliens are taken care because they want their votes.
