U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo congratulated Venezuelan President Juan Guaidó and reaffirmed America’s commitment to helping the country defeat the socialist regime of Nicolás Maduro in a statement published Friday to commemorate the South American nation’s independence day.
Pompeo spoke to Guaidó on the phone this week prior to the celebration of July 5 in Venezuela and July 4, American Independence Day, in the United States.
Pompeo’s message was published on the same day that United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet delivered a speech before her commission condemning Maduro for gross human rights violations against his people. Bachelet visited Venezuela last month and met with both Maduro, who illegally controls the Venezuelan military and presidential palace, and Guaidó, the legitimate head of statement.
Maduro’s regime has refuted Bachelet’s findings and demanded an apology.
“Once again, the Venezuelan people are besieged by dictatorship, undesired foreign presence, and profiteers,” Pompeo said in remarks published by the State Department on Friday. “As in the time of [Venezuelan liberator Simón] Bolívar, Venezuela’s path to democracy is not easy, but you inspire the world with the strength of your voices and tremendous courage.We are with you in your struggle to reclaim your democratic self-governance and free it from those who have betrayed, oppressed, and robbed the Venezuelan people of the wealth of your great nation.”
Pompeo promised that Washington would be “unwavering in [its] commitment to realizing the restoration of your democratic future and the establishment of a government chosen by the Venezuelan people through free and fair elections.”
“You will have our support until then — and beyond as your recovery begins,” he vowed.
U.S. National Security Advisor John Bolton also extended his support to the Venezuelan people on Friday, stating that the Trump administration is “proud” to stand with Guaidó against Maduro.

Pompeo spoke to Guaidó on Tuesday. According to State Department spokesperson Morgan Ortagus, Pompeo used the occasion “to commemorate the anniversary of Venezuela’s independence on July 5th and express the United States’ unwavering support for Guaido, the National Assembly, and the Venezuelan people as they seek to regain their country’s freedom and prosperity.”
Guaidó issued his own Independence Day message on Thursday.
“We congratulate the U.S. on its Independence Day. Today, [July 4], the American people celebrate their freedom. This same freedom is what the Venezuelan people conquered over 200 years ago and we will recover it,” Guaidó wrote on Twitter.

In addition to verbal support, the Treasury Department took new measures this week to help keep money out of Maduro’s pocket, to prevent the socialist regime from being able to afford the weapons they need to torture and kill dissidents, which keeps them in power. On Wednesday, the U.S. Treasury designated Cubametales, the Cuban state-run oil company, for its ties to Venezuela and its work in keeping Maduro’s regime afloat amid sanctions on most of its industries. The designation blocks any property or interests the company has in the United States and ban Americans and American companies from doing business with Cubametales.
“Maduro is clinging to Cuba to stay in power, buying military and intelligence operatives in exchange for oil. Treasury’s sanctions on Cubametales will disrupt Maduro’s attempts to use Venezuela’s oil as a bargaining tool to help his supporters purchase protection from Cuba and other malign foreign actors,” Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin explained on Wednesday.
While America spearheads the international effort against Maduro, the U.N.’s human rights chief delivered a speech Friday to the Human Rights Council, which the Maduro regime belonged to until late 2018 (Maduro’s patron state, Cuba, is a member of the council). Bachelet, having returned recently from Caracas, found Venezuela is a dire state.
“Essential institutions and the rule of law in Venezuela have been profoundly eroded. The exercise of freedom of opinion, expression, association and assembly, and the right to participate in public life, entail a risk of reprisals and repression,” Bachelet told the council. “Our report notes attacks against actual or perceived opponents and human rights defenders, ranging from threats and smear campaigns to arbitrary detention, torture and ill-treatment, sexual violence, and killings and enforced disappearance.”
Bachelet added that her team ad “documented excessive use of force in the context of security operations by the Special Action Forces, with multiple killings, mainly of young men.” She noted that inflation in the country had “reached a dramatic 2,866,670 percent at the end of January 2019 – 2.8 million percent.”
“An assessment of humanitarian needs conducted by OCHA in March found that an estimated seven million people in Venezuela need humanitarian assistance: one quarter of the population,” she insisted.
The U.N. report on Venezuela, whose debut coincides with Bachelet’s address, is the result of hundreds of interviews with Venezuelan officials, members of the Maduro dictatorship, and Venezuelan civilians. It recommends immediate action to contain the problem but stops short of demanding a military overthrow of the Maduro regime, despite it not being legally in power.
The Maduro regime responded with a statement demanding an immediate “correction” of the report that would remove the references to the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the country and detail the alleged successes of socialism.
“We demand the correction of [the report’s] content and insist on thoughtful and respectful action from your office,” Maduro’s Vice Minister for International Communication William Castillo said, according to Maduro state media. The report, Castillo claimed, “ignores almost completely the information provided by the State [the Maduro regime] and only takes into account that obtained by spokesmen of the opposition and media sources.”
Castillo demanded that the report condemn the United States’ “multifaceted aggression” against Venezuela for the humanitarian disaster in the country, but also insisted that no such disaster exists.
“Castillo dismissed the notion that a ‘humanitarian crisis’ exists in the country, as the economic problems that Venezuela endures, like those of many nations, are associated with different factors,” Maduro media reported. Castillo also reported claimed that Maduro faces “serious risks to national security, plans for coups d’etat that offer a bloodbath among the civilian population, and even foreign military intervention, which President Trump has threatened us with.”
Donald Trump’s super power is now on full display. As I’ve mentioned before, the president has an uncanny ability to make other people destroy themselves. And what he has done to countless individuals, he is now doing to the left en masse.
I first noticed this super ability of Trump’s way back during the 2016 Republican primaries. Reacting to Trump, Marco Rubio descended to Trump’s level of grotesque personal insult — and basically ended his campaign. Reacting to Trump, Jeb! Bush tried to appear forceful and dynamic and rendered himself ridiculous — and he was done. Even the brilliant Ted Cruz, reacting to Trump, was lured into an attempt to out-strategize “my friend Donald,” and only managed to get himself devoured last. Trump didn’t beat them, he simply magicked them into beating themselves. It really is a remarkable kind of Jedi mind trick.
And now, after two and a half years of the left trying to strike Trump down, he has only become more powerful than they could possibly have imagined!
Who couldn’t see the extraordinary Trump Effect playing itself out in the Democrat debates, as candidate after candidate promised to destroy our borders, give free health care to millions of illegals, and immolate whole job sectors on the altar of climate hysteria? Even sympathetic left-wing commentators were covering their eyes at the self-engineered train wreck: the latest exercise of the Trump super power.
And it didn’t stop there. In the course of a single week, signs that Trump had amped his Jedi game to Melee Level were everywhere. Antifas fascists nearly murdered a journalist — and leftists made excuses for them. The Fourth of July approached — and leftists declared the American flag a symbol of white nationalism. Our border forces struggled valiantly to handle a crisis the left had repeatedly claimed was imaginary — and leftists condemned them as dangerous thugs running concentration camps.
Finally, Trump organized a delightfully Trumpian Fourth of July extravaganza on the National Mall — and the leftist commentators flocked to cable to proclaim the celebration the act of an evil dictator.
When the Fourth arrived, we had a split screen America. Take your choice.
In Trump World, thousands of smiling patriots of every race and religion were waving flags, enjoying a parade, and listening to a stirring non-partisan speech by their president.
In Left World? Protestors burned flags. They chanted “America was never great.” Leftist commentators, politicians and celebrities expressed a vision of this unique and blessed country best encapsulated in an hysterical tweet from filmmaker Joss Whedon: “We have a racist, fascist president who’s using armed thugs in law enforcement & illegal militias to keep us cowed & hopeless & he’ll take the 2020 election by armed force & blatant, treasonous criminality & that’s us now, we’re the country with concentration camps so happy 4th.”
Which world do you want to live in? Do you want to celebrate and enjoy a country that has brought more freedom and prosperity to more people than any nation ever in the history of the earth? Do you want to revel and thrive in this era of prosperity and peace? Or do you want to suffer in some imaginary dictatorship that exists only in the minds of a deranged and joyless minority raving in the dungeon of their own hate-filled delusions?
Trump has created this clarity of choice. His super power has created it. He has turned the left into the worst version of themselves and allowed us to see the crazy logic of their philosophy played out to its true conclusions.
He isn’t destroying them. But he has magicked them to the brink of destroying themselves.
I don’t know how the man does it. But I hope he keeps right on doing it.
He’s a former Trump administration official. He loves basketball, speaks fluent Spanish, and at 32 years old, Nick Bell is running a one-man campaign to replace one of one of the Virginia state legislature’s key abortion proponents.
It’s one of the hottest days of the sweltering, humid Northern Virginia summer as Bell sits down at a sandwich shop with me just a few minutes from his home in the Washington, D.C., suburb of Annandale. Over his roast beef and cheddar sandwich, Bell says that he’s running a pro-life insurgency campaign for the Virginia House of Delegates to help make his home state into “something that people can be proud of” again after the commonwealth’s infanticide fiasco earlier this year.
Bell isn’t running against the lead sponsor of Virginia’s now-infamous infanticide bill, Democratic lawmaker Kathy Tran; instead, his district (the 39th) is located right next to Tran’s, where he’s running against Tran’s fellow abortion supporter Democratic delegate Vivian Watts.
“I always say Vivian Watts makes Kathy Tran look like an angel,” Bell explains. “She has this long history of being very pro-abortion.”
Watts supported Tran’s infanticide bill in the subcommittee that voted to move forward on the bill. In the past, Bell says, Watts also opposed “many versions” of the state’s 1997 partial birth abortion ban and and also voted against “every single version” of a 2003 Virginia abortion law that prohibits doctors from making an “outright act” to kill a child who survives an abortion, but doesn’t prohibit them from letting them die.
That loophole, Bell explains, is what informed Virginia Governor Ralph Northam’s January comments about keeping infants “comfortable” while deciding whether or not to let them die.
“So one of my positions is we need to put a bill forward like the [federal Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act] to say, ‘Okay, we have to provide medical care to babies who survive a failed abortion,’” Bell explains.
Bell also realizes that because he’s running in deep-blue Northern Virginia against a longtime state legislator, the odds are stacked heavily against him. However, he says that he’s banking on hopes that the infanticide fiasco went too far, even for those who call themselves “pro-choice.”
“I think people are horrified of what [pro-abortion Democrats] are doing,” Bell says of the “extreme position” of the state’s infanticide bill. “Obviously my district is majority pro-choice, but we’re not talking about abortion in the first trimester; we’re talking about killing babies who are born or are one, two, three days before birth.”
Bell also says that he plans to get his message out to the people of his district with good old-fashioned door-knocking, reaching out to churches, and sending out mailers informing voters of his and his opponent’s position on the life issue “because people actually don’t know what’s going on” or the extent of Virginia’s current abortion laws, which allow for “abortion up until the moment of birth,” or that “Democrats are trying to make it available for any reason whatsoever.”
“Face-to-face contact is so big,” Bell adds while discussing door-knocking. “You can get a lot of mailers, but if you don’t see the person face to face, that’s extremely important.”
That’s also going to be quite a task, given that Bell says his campaign is currently a one-man show.
“Right now, it’s only me, so I am just doing this all myself,” Bell informs me. He adds with a smile, “How many nonprofits or campaigns can say 100 percent of their dollars go directly to the voter contact? I can say that.”
Bell, a lifelong Virginian except for the three years he spent teaching English and moonlighting in semi-professional basketball in Spain, said that when he first heard about the abortion bill, he was “shocked, horrified.”
“I couldn’t believe that my state would allow that,” he recalled. He also notes that, following the infanticide fiasco, “Virginia was called out as being an embarrassment to the whole nation,” which he says was a “huge part” of motivating his campaign. “I want to change Virginia from being a point of embarrassment and shame into something that people can be proud of,” Bell says. “And killing babies after they’re born or right before they’re born is not what I want Virginia to be known for.”
Nick Bell is the son of former Republican Senate candidate and Reagan administration official Jeffrey Bell, one of the key proponents behind supply-side “Reaganomics.” Nick himself has also worked in a Republican presidential administration, having previously served as a special assistant to the assistant secretary for policy at the Trump Labor Department.
But the young Republican also knows that he can’t run a successful campaign on a single issue alone; another big area where he plans to focus his messaging, he says, is on Northern Virginia’s tolls and traffic, especially for those who have to drive to Washington, D.C., or Maryland for work.
He says he wants to eliminate “all the toll lanes” on the area’s highways and “convert them to regular lanes so everyone can use it.” Now, he adds, people “can’t get back to their family because they see these huge lanes with no one on them and they’re stuck in this insane traffic.”
When he’s not trying to add a pro-life voice to the Old Dominion’s legislature, Bell says that he likes to blow off steam by playing basketball.”I love basketball,” Bell explains. “I love to get out there and shoot around outside in my neighborhood.” The multiple basketballs sitting in the back seat of his stick-shift four-door sedan out in the parking lot prove he isn’t kidding around about that.
Overall, despite the hard few months ahead of him, Bell says that he feels “super optimistic and energized” about his campaign.
Bell continues to say that a big part of his optimism at this stage is his view that “the Democrats are so apart from the people,” because he’s “never thought of another issue where the voting populace is farther from a certain political party” than on the issue of late-term abortion and infanticide.
“I think if you went outside and asked 100 people, ‘Do you support killing babies after they’re born?’” Bell concludes, “it would be 99.9 to one, no way.”
Two independent Canadian theater owners received death threats ahead of screenings for the pro-life movie “Unplanned,” reports LifeSiteNews.
“Police are investigating death threats sent to two Canadian independent theatre owners because they are screening the pro-life movie Unplanned on July 12,” the outlet reported. “As a safety measure, the movie’s producers have now removed from their website the comprehensive July 12 listing of 46 Canadian theatres — independents, Cineplex and Landmark locations — that will be showing Unplanned.”
“Unplanned” tells the story of famed Planned Parenthood defector Abby Johnson, who left the organization to become a pro-life activist after witnessing an abortion while working at the Bryan, Texas, Planned Parenthood clinic in 2009. Released in March, the movie arguably became one of the most successful independent movies of 2019 thus far by raking in $18 million in the box office on a $6 million budget.
“Unplanned” producer Chuck Konzelman told LifeSiteNews that they removed theater listings from the movie’s website at the request of B.J. McKelvie, president of Fredericton-based Cinedicon, the Canadian distributor of the film.
“McKelvie confirmed to LifeSiteNews that two Canadian independent cinema owners contacted police after receiving death threats they perceived as credible, and that they are ‘fearful for their families,'” the report continued. “Another Canadian independent theatre owner ‘has been harrassed to the extreme.’ One of the two owners who contacted the police has cancelled the Unplanned screening, but all the rest ‘are holding their ground,’ McKelvie said.”
McKelvie noted that the death threats were largely targeted at independent theater chains because “they didn’t get anywhere with Cineplex, or they didn’t get anywhere with Landmark” – the two largest theater chains in the country.
“It’s unfortunate it’s come to that,” McKelvie told the outlet. “It’s just a movie. The topic is certainly a hot topic. However, it is just a movie. I find it ironic, they talk about choice, pro-choice, pro-choice, pro-choice, but they’re not giving people a choice to go see the movie.”
The death threats come shortly after “Unplanned” producers began entering into negotiations with Canadian distribution companies after they allegedly blackballed the film from screening in some of the top theater chains. After severe backlash from the Canadian pro-life community, the distributors changed their minds. Co-director Cary Solomon said in a news conference in late May that the movie would be screened in up to 10 to 20 Canadian cities and thanked the Canadian pro-life community for helping to bring the companies to the table.
“This all emanated out of the pro-lifers who came out of Canada, so I think you should be really proud of yourselves,” Solomon said at the news conference. “All of this heroic stuff that you’re doing in Canada is being seen by the rest of the world. I think in the final analysis it may be Canada that will get the credit for ending this abortion nightmare.”
After the Canadian pro-life community vowed to boycott theaters, a screening of the film in Edmonton packed in 3,000 people, which undoubtedly pushed the top distribution companies to negotiate. Over 5,000 people signed onto the boycott’s online campaign.
