For an organization known as the American Civl Liberties Union, these clowns sure don’t know jack about our civil rights or the Constitution that guarantees them. They believe that the 2nd Amendment right to keep and bear arms is a collective right that guarantees the government’s right to have guns and not an individual right of personal gun ownership. Equally as wrong, they think the Constitution forbids a local police chief from expressing his Christian faith and are threatening a lawsuit.
KSWO reports that the Chief of police in Mounds, OK has been posting Bible verses to the department’s Facebook page for about a year now. By all accounts these posts have been well received by the community.
“It’s nothing about trying to put any other faith down, but it’s just more one of just trying to be encouraging to others, prayer to me is universal,” Chief Antonio Porter said.
If there is one thing that the ACLU hates as much as guns it’s Christianity and this innocent act that offended no one has caused the organization to freak the hell out. ACLU legal director Brady Henderson fired off this angry response:
Both the First Amendment of the United States Constitution and provisions of the Oklahoma Constitution protect against government officials establishing a state religion. The exclusive, pervasive promotion of the Christian faith by the Mounds Police Department represents a clear violation of those legal mandates. By promoting one specific religion on its official Facebook page, the Mounds Police Department has established clear preference for that faith above other faiths and above no religious faith at all. This kind of government interference with our religious freedom is simply not permissible under United States or Oklahoma law.
It’s interesting that the ACLU thinks forcing a man to stop expressing his Christian faith is protecting freedom of religion. This is just more proof that liberals have entirely different definitions for words and concepts.
The ACLU then goes off the deep end and accuses the Mounds Police Department of refusing to protect non-Christians in its jurisdiction.
In addition to the clear violation of one of the central tenets of American government, freedom of religion, the actions of the Mounds Police Department call into question whether or not the department can be trusted to adequately protect all those living under its jurisdiction, including members of minority faiths and those of no religious faith at all. By establishing a preference for the Christian faith, the department undermines confidence in their ability to perform their duties in a manner consistent with our understanding of one of our most basic and cherished liberties.
Let’s take a look at the facts here. This is the entire 1st Amendment, which guarantees our right to freedom of religion: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. (my emphasis)
It says that Congress shall make no law establishing a state religion. Is the police chief of a small Oklahoma town Congress? Is posting something on Facebook making a law? Does posting bible verses establish a state religion? It’s a big “no” on all of those questions. There is nothing about what this police chief is doing that is even remotely related to the 1st Amendment, other than he does have a right to express himself.
When liberals like the ACLU talk about the “separation of church and state” they act as if this is something that is in the Constitution, but it is not. The only thing the Constitution has to say on the matter is that Congress cannot force a religion on the people or stop people from expressing their religion.
There isn’t even a Supreme Court decision to support the ACLU’s twisted interpretation of the 1st Amendment, though there is one that affirms that gun ownership is an individual right. Yet somehow this “civil liberties” group thinks people aren’t allowed to own guns and individuals aren’t able to express their religious beliefs.
It’s this same bad read on religious freedom that has the ACLU threatening and suing schools for throwing Christmas pageants. Would they ever sue a Muslim elected official for quoting the Koran? Hell no, that would be racist or Islamaphobic or something.
Clearly the ACLU needs to change it’s name because they are not concerned with American civil liberties. In fact, the Federal Trade Commission should sue them for false advertising. If all they cover is shit that pisses liberals off, they can’t claim to protect all civil liberties for all people.
