If the GOP repeals the adoption tax credit the party should disband

Does the leadership of this party have actual, diagnosable brain damage? Of all the places in the tax code they could try to find some extra revenue, the supposedly pro-life GOP decides to squeeze … middle-class adoptive families?

While funding Planned Parenthood in their budget?

While our billionaire president is grumbling privately to Democrats that they should repeal the estate tax, which only bites the mega-rich?

We’re past the point of wondering whether the GOP wants to lose. The question now is whether they deserve to lose. Judging from this account by Haley Byrd of the IJR, all signs point to yes:

The adoption tax credit only costs $300 million per year. It’s not even pocket change for Uncle Sam. For the GOP, allegedly the party of social conservatives, to nuke it over a pittance of savings feels like almost deliberate sabotage of adoptive families. What the hell are they thinking?

But it gets worse. As John McCormack points out, in the long run the adoption tax credit pays for itself, in both tangible and intangible terms:

“What they don’t factor in is the total cost to society with a child in foster care,” Johnson tells THE WEEKLY STANDARD. The costs to taxpayers of keeping a child in foster care—health care, food, housing, social workers, and administrators—are far greater than the one-time tax credit adoptive families may receive.

“Comparing the per-child cost of subsidized adoption from foster care with the cost of maintaining a child in foster care, one concludes that the child adopted from foster care costs the public only 40 percent as much as the child who remains in foster care,” according to a report from the National Council for Adoption. “The difference in cost per child per year amounts to $15,480.”

Paul Ryan had the balls earlier today to shrug off complaints about repealing the adoption tax credit by noting that it primarily benefits the upper class. Meanwhile, notes McCormack, the GOP bill would reduce revenue from the estate tax — which only benefits the very uppermost of the upper class — by $172 billion over the next 10 years. Eliminating the adoption tax credit, by comparison, would save the government just $3.8 billion. Ryan’s willing to lose 50 times the amount of revenue that would be lost by saving the adoption tax credit in the name of letting mega-millionaires pass more money on to their kids. Bananas.

Even his point about the credit mainly benefiting higher-income individuals is misleading. It’s true that upper-middle-class families tend to claim the credit but that’s because adoption is so fantastically expensive that only upper-middle-class families can afford to do it. Forget the day-to-day costs of caring for an adopted infant; the adoption process itself can cost $35,000 or more. This Twitter thread by a Google engineer laying out the hardships of adoption went viral a few days ago because of how shocking the sums were. He claims to have spent $50,000 on adopting his first child, which includes fees for the adoption agency, lawyers, travel, hotels, medical care, and other miscellaneous expenses. The only reason he was able to afford it, he notes, was because he had Google stock to sell and even then he was stretched. Some adoptive families take out second mortgages, borrow from relatives, and so on. The tax credit gives them back $13,000 to help defray that. And even that comes with strings: David French, an adoptive dad himself, notes that the IRS audited nearly 70 percent of the families that received the credit recently to check for fraud. It found none.

The only principled argument for ending the adoption tax credit is if you believe the government shouldn’t redistribute taxpayer money via credits of any sort. That’s a fine libertarian view but it ain’t the GOP’s view; in fact, their tax reform plan proposes expanding the child tax credit modestly. If you’re going to have credits in the code, a robust one for adoptive families is a no-brainer. If anything, the mismatch between the current value of the credit and the reality of much more exorbitant adoption fees means Republicans should seize the opportunity to expand the credit. Shave $50 billion off those estate-tax cuts for the mega-rich and apply it to adoption so that more than just Google engineers and lawyers can afford to adopt. If you’re going to be a “pro-family” party, be pro-family.

Trump Skips Out on “Fancy Lunch” in Order to Sit Down and Eat With the Troops

President Donald Trump chose to forgo a fancy lunch on Tuesday so he could sit down and enjoy a meal with U.S. and South Korean troops.

Trump and South Korean President Moon Jae-in joined 108 servicemen and women, including over a dozen South Koreans, for Taco Tuesday at Camp Humphreys during his visit to South Korea, according to Stars and Stripes.

“I had a choice of having a beautiful, very fancy lunch and I said no, I want to eat with the troops and we ate with the troops,” Trump said, according to a statement from the White House.

Pvt. Merion Holmes, 21, of Georgetown, South Carolina, said he was honored to see Trump.

“He said he’d rather eat with the troops than at a fancy restaurant,” Holmes told Stars and Stripes after the meal. “It made me feel like he cared.”

Before the meal, Sgt. Jerrell Knight of Atlanta said he was nervous when he found out he would be seated next to the president.

“I get to meet my commander in chief, my boss. It’s pretty overwhelming to be right next to the president,” Knight said, as reported by Stars and Stripes.

Knight said the president spoke about the U.S.-South Korean alliance and the need for a solution to the North Korean problem. He said Trump thanked him for his service and shook his hand.

In a video posted to Twitter, the president told the troops he was honored to be with them.

Trump reportedly had to decide where to eat: with the troops or while visiting the DMZ.

A senior administration official told reporters Tuesday that there wasn’t enough time to visit both Camp Humphreys and the DMZ. He said it made sense for Trump to visit the DMZ since no U.S. president has ever visited there before, the U.K. Guardian reported.

U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis visited the DMZ last week and Vice President Mike Pence and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson have also recently visited the area.

“It’s becoming a little bit of a cliché, frankly. And that’s why he’s going to be down at Humphreys,” the official said, as reported by the Guardian.

Trump’s decision to skip out on a “fancy lunch” and eat with troops says a lot about his character.

We can only wonder if former President Barack Obama would have made a similar choice.

2016 Election Night Flashback — Top 14 Media Meltdowns

On Election Night 2016, I was about 60 to 65 percent sure Hillary would win,  and therefore emotionally preparing myself for all the hideous things that would come with such a thing — fascist Obamacare enshrined, further bake-the-cake mandates strangling my Christian faith, a more empowered central government, corruption galore, and a whole lot of Benghazis.

The one great hope I clung to was Michigan.

Something worth paying attention to had happened in that key state during the Democrat primary. The polls in Michigan were not just wrong, they were as wrong as wrong can be.

By the time Election Night rolled around, the Real Clear Politics poll of polls showed a Clinton lead of a whopping 21.4 percent over Bernie Sanders.

By the time it was all over, though, Sanders won Michigan by 1.5 percent.

In Indiana, Bernie was down seven points, he ended up winning by five. Though there was not much up-to-date polling (because Hillary was certain to win by a wide margin), Bernie won a huge upset in Minnesota. Clinton won Pennsylvania, but Bernie did better than expected. Same with West Virginia and North Carolina.

In key states, media polling was, again and again, underestimating Bernie’s support. This was not as true for Trump during the Republican primaries, so the Bernie results were not completely comforting. But there did seem to be a Trumpian portion of the Democrat electorate that polling was not picking up on.

Early on the evening of November 8, I was graciously invited to appear on the anti-Trump Daily Wire Election Night podcast and, of course, asked to make a prediction. With Bernie’s polling on my mind, I gave my 60 to 65 percent  prediction of a Hillary victory with this qualifier…

“Watch North Carolina,” I said. “North Carolina is all tied up. If North Carolina looks comfortable for Trump, then all the other state polling is probably wrong, which means Trump has a chance.”

Trump went on to win my home state by almost four points, and the rest is history.

Watching the media realize just how utterly wrong they were, watching the media realize that they no longer had the power to influence public opinion, watching everyday people rise up and give our corrupt media the all-American middle-finger… There is no way to describe just how joyful that was.

Back in 2004, when George W. Bush beat the media and won re-election, it seemed impossible that anything could be better than that. Those 12 long years were more than worth the wait.

So here they are, as many as I could round up… The glorious meltdowns of the smuggest, nastiest, most sanctimonious, self-righteous and dishonest people in America.

Watching terrible people get their comeuppance never gets old.

Ever.

  1. At around the 50 second mark, ABC’s Martha Raddatz literally breaks down and cries … like a girl … and it is glorious:

  1. The Young Turks’ Ana Kasparian tells female Trump voters they are “f**king dumb” … and it is glorious.

  1. Those Young Turks again… You can watch the full 26 minute meltdown here, but here is THE moment … and it is glorious.

  1. CNN’s Jake Tapper is so discombobulated by Trump’s inevitable victory his poise completely falls apart as he accidentally admits he and Hillary are one with the word “we.” Wolf glancing over at the camera is almost as priceless.

  1. Tapper’s voice is still shaky here, but here it is… The glorious moment Trump-hating CNN learned Donald J. Trump would beat them all and won the presidency:

  1. MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow melted down for two minutes … and it was glorious:

  1. Bitter CNN 9/11 Truther Van Jones blames Trump’s victory on a “whitelash.”

  1. Fully expecting Hillary to win, left-wing Stephen Colbert made the mistake of doing a live Election Night Showtime program … and at right around the 7 minute mark … it was glorious:

  1. Chris Matthews fact checks Rachel Maddow’s spin … and it was glorious:

  1. All those sad faces at CBS News are … glorious. Look at Charlie Rose with his shattered face is all squinched up like Popeye as he stares at the nothingness that is his credibility.

  1. Katie Couric and her online panel are shattered … and it’s glorious:

  1. James Carville on MSNBC is … glorious. Even more glorious? The guy who put up the YouTube video laughing uncontrollably at all the MSNBC anguish:

  1. Watch the hideous Morning Joe crew attempt to recover from misleading their viewers for months .. glorious:

  1. Finally, here is an exquisite montage of our awful elites, who are not only shattered by their own personal election loss, but by the realization that they no longer matter, that all their moral authority was a fabricated mirage that only fooled them:

When the media is in emotional pain, that can only mean good things for America and Americans.

Very Fake News: CNN Selectively Edits Trump Quote on Japanese Auto Production in U.S.

Left-wing CNN has been caught red-handed selectively-editing a Donald Trump quote as a means to make the president look foolish during his overseas trip to Japan.

In its second piece of very fake news launched against Trump Monday morning (here is the first), CNN’s snarky and dishonest headline reads, “Trump asks Japan to build cars in the U.S. It already does.” In order to justify its misleading headline, CNN lies through omission by deliberately publishing only part of Trump’s statement during a meeting with Japanese automakers on Monday:

“Try building your cars in the United States instead of shipping them over. Is that possible to ask? That’s not rude. Is that rude? I don’t think so,” is the only part of what Trump said that CNN bothers to quote.

CNN then points and laughs at Trump’s ignorance with this deceptive fact check: “Japanese automakers, however, already have huge factories in the U.S. that churn out millions of cars each year.”

But in order to mock the president, the fake news factory that is CNN misleads its readers by not quoting Trump in full, a quote which very clearly shows the president is not only fully aware of that fact that Japanese automakers make cars in America, but that he is grateful to them for doing so:

And we love it when you build cars — if you’re a Japanese firm, we love it — try building your cars in the United States instead of shipping them over.  Is that possible to ask?  That’s not rude.  Is that rude?  I don’t think so.  (Laughter.)  If you could build them. But I must say, Toyota and Mazda — where are you?  Are you here, anybody?  Toyota?  Mazda?  I thought so.  Oh, I thought that was you.  That’s big stuff.  Congratulations.  Come on, let me shake your hand.  (Applause.)  They’re going to invest $1.6 billion in building a new manufacturing plant, which will create as many as 4,000 new jobs in the United States.  Thank you very much.  Appreciate it.  (Applause.)

Hours later, after being shamed on social media, CNN updated the piece to include Trump’s full quote but, as if to once again prove the truth means nothing to them, the utterly dishonest headline remained the same.

This has been another terrible week for CNN.

Earlier Monday, the network was busted publishing misleading video to invent a Trump blunder during a photo-op with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

In the fake video, the last-place cable news network focused in only on Trump as he emptied a box of fish food into a koi pond. What CNN did not want its Twitter followers to know is that Trump was following the prime minister’s lead in doing so. CNN’s misleading video was meant to make Trump look foolish and impatient as he dumped out the box.

Adding to CNN’s ongoing ratings and reputation woes was Jake Tapper’s misleading and wildly inappropriate interpretation of “Allahu Akbar” late last week in the immediate aftermath of a deadly Islamic terror attack in New York City.

To make matters worse, Tapper, whose dual reputation and ratings crises have become an embarrassment to CNN, suffered a humiliating public meltdown in reaction to the criticism.

CNN’s crusade to destroy President Trump has only blown back on the banana network, which was once in second place behind only Fox News, but is now not only in dead last place but national joke.

Obama Slithers Out to Exploit Cold-Blooded Murder of Christians to Push Gun Control

Democrats and the media wasted no time in exploiting the murder of 26 Christians as they attended worship services to push their gun control agenda.

26-year-old atheist Devin Patrick Kelley – a dishonorably discharged Air Force veteran – opened fire at a Texas Baptist church Sunday on a planned mission of massacre that became the deadliest church shooting in US history. His victims included at least a dozen children, another 20 people were injured.

Rather than hold their tongues out of respect for the dead, the relentlessly anti-Christian, anti-Second Amendment left started in on gun control before the bodies had even cooled off.

And one of the buzzards circling the corpses was none other than former President Barack Obama. Never a man to pass up a chance to play politics, Barry waded in.

Via The Hill “Obama: May God grant us the wisdom for how to prevent gun violence”:

Former President Obama called for action on gun violence after the deadly mass shooting at a church in Texas on Sunday.

“We grieve with all the families in Sutherland Springs harmed by this act of hatred, and we’ll stand with the survivors as they recover,” Obama tweeted Sunday.

“May God also grant all of us the wisdom to ask what concrete steps we can take to reduce the violence and weaponry in our midst.”

At least 26 people were killed after a gunman opened fire at a church in Sutherland Springs, Texas. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) said it was the deadliest mass shooting in the state’s history, and it came a little more than a month after the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history, in Las Vegas.

Obama pushed to pass new gun laws following deadly mass shootings during his administration, most notably after the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in 2012.

The words “decency” and “Obama” will never collide in the same sentence.

There is also the New York Times with an obscene gimmick of a clock ticking off the time before a “debate” on how to best disarm law-abiding Americans can begin.

And of course Trump hating, anti-gun zealot and Democrat Senator Chris Murphy.

Jimmy Kimmel will no doubt shed fake tears again during tonight’s monologue.

The callous manner in how quickly that the left has exploited this horrific slaughter of innocents is beyond the pale but par for the course.

Networks Skip This Key Detail: Rand Paul’s Assailant Is a ‘Liberal’ ‘Socialist’

Imagine if lefty Senator Elizabeth Warren had been violently assaulted by an arch-conservative. Think journalists would mention that point? Well, they didn’t when the situation was reversed and Rand Paul was attacked over the weekend by a “liberal” “socialist.” Only ABC even bothered to compare this latest incident to the attempted murder of Republican congressmen in the summer.  The total coverage on ABC, CBS and NBC of this latest violent act is 3 minutes and 7 seconds

On Monday, CBS This Morning co-host Norah O’Donnell offered the bare details in a 36 second news brief: “Republican Senator Paul Rand is recovering from five broken ribs after he was assaulted at his home. The Kentucky lawmaker was attacked Friday in Bowling Green. His next-door neighbor Rene Boucher was arrested for the assault.” She added, “No information on the motive or why he was attacked.”

Well, we DO have an idea why Boucher didn’t like Paul. In a story on the attack, The Washington Post —  after 17 paragraphs —  revealed this:

Jeff Jones, a registered nurse who worked with Boucher at the Bowling Green Medical Center, described Boucher’s politics as “liberal.”

“He was active on social media and said some negative things about the Republican agenda,” Jones said.

“I think it was unfortunate that they lived so close together,” he added.

New York magazine explained that Boucher is also a socialist:

Boucher’s motive is unclear. Jim Bullington, a former member of the city commission, who knows both men, described Boucher as a socialist and said he’d been known to get into “heated discussions” with the libertarian senator about health care.

Neither ABC’s Good Morning America nor NBC’s Today covered the shooting at all on Monday.

On Sunday, only GMA’s Kenneth Moton linked, in a broader sense, this assault to the attempted slaughter in June of Republicans at a softball practice: “There have been a number of security concerns for members of Congress. Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle reporting threats in the wake of that shooting at the GOP congressional baseball practice a few months ago.”

Moton at least hinted that the attack on Paul could have an ideological motivation: “Rand Paul, outspoken, a fierce critic of the Affordable Care Act and recently a defender of President Trump’s policies.” But there was no mention of Boucher’s politics.

Ideology may have something to do with the attack on Paul. It may not. This may simply revolve around two neighbors who just didn’t like each other. But the fact that this man hated Rand Paul’s beliefs should be mentioned. It would be if the situation was reversed. In fact, journalists don’t even check the facts when there’s an opportunity to smear conservatives. In 2012, ABC falsely connected a mass murder in a Colorado movie theater to the Tea Party.

(For more on the Rand Paul assault, see NewsBusters.)

NORAH O’DONNELL: Republican Senator Paul Rand is recovering from five broken ribs after he was assaulted at his home. The Kentucky lawmaker was attacked Friday in Bowling Green. His next-door neighbor Rene Boucher was arrested for the assault. A senior adviser to the Senator said it’s unclear when he’ll go back to work since he’s in considerable pain. His broken ribs include three displaced fractures. In a tweet yesterday, Paul said, quote, “Kelly and I appreciate the overwhelming support after Friday’s unfortunate event. Thank you for the thoughts and prayers.” No information on the motive or why he was attacked.
